Neurodegenerative ocular disorders mostly develop with aging and present great complications in the quality of life. Glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration (ARMD) rank as the third and fourth leading causes of blindness and low vision. Oxidative stress is one factor in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative eye disease. In addition, ocular ischemia and neuroinflammation play an important role. It can be hypothesized that the influence of antioxidants through diet or oral supplementation can counteract the harmful effects of reactive oxygen species accumulated secondary to oxidative stress, ischemia, and inflammation. A range of studies has been published over the past decades focusing on the possible adjuvant effect of antioxidants in ARMD, while there were fewer reports on the potential role of antioxidants in glaucoma. Although certain reports demonstrated positive results, others were discouraging. As there is a controversy between the studies favoring and disfavoring supplementation with different types of antioxidants, it is important to revise the existing evidence on the role of antioxidants in neurodegenerative ocular disorders with a special focus on glaucoma and ARMD. A disease is a distinct abnormal state that significantly affects the functioning of all or part of an individual and is not caused by external harm. Diseases are frequently understood as medical conditions connected with distinct indications and symptoms. According to a fairly wide categorization, diseases can also be categorized as mental disorders, deficient diseases, genetic diseases, degenerative diseases, self-inflicted diseases, infectious diseases, non-infectious diseases, social diseases, and physical diseases. Prevention of the diseases is of multiple instances. Primary prevention seeks to prevent illness or harm before it ever happens. Secondary prevention tries to lessen the effect of an illness or damage that has already happened. This is done through diagnosing and treating illness or injury as soon as feasible to stop or delay its course, supporting personal ways to avoid recurrence or reinjury, and implementing programs to restore individuals to their previous health and function to prevent long-term difficulties. Tertiary prevention tries to lessen the impact of a continuing sickness or injury that has enduring repercussions. Diagnosis of the disease at an earlier stage is important for the treatment of the disease. Hence, in this study, deep learning algorithms, such as VGG16, EfficientNetB4, and ResNet, are utilized to diagnose various diseases, such as Alzheimer's, brain tumors, skin diseases, and lung diseases. Chest X-rays, MRI scans, CT scans, and skin lesions are used to diagnose the mentioned diseases. Transfer learning algorithms, such as VGG16, VGG19, ResNet, InceptionV3, and EfficientNetB4, are utilized to categorize various diseases. EfficientNetB4 with the learning rate annealing, having obtained an accuracy of 94.04% on the test dataset, is observed. Purpose: The identification of patients with chronic hypoparathyroidism who are adequately (AC) or not adequately controlled (NAC) has clinical interest, since poor disease control is related to complications and mortality. We aimed to assess the prevalence of NAC patients in a cohort of subjects with postsurgical hypoparathyroidism. Methods: We performed a multicenter, retrospective, cohort study including patients from 16 Spanish hospitals with chronic hypoparathyroidism lasting =3 years. We analyzed disease control including biochemical profile and clinical wellness. For biochemical assessment we considered three criteria: criterion 1, normal serum calcium, phosphorus and calcium x phosphorus product; criterion 2, the above plus estimated glomerular filtration rate =60 ml/min/1.73 m²; and criterion 3, the above plus normal 24-hour urinary calcium excretion. A patient was considered AC if he or she met the biochemical criteria and was clinically well. Results: We included 337 patients with postsurgical hypoparathyroidism (84.3% women, median age 45[36-56] years, median time of follow-up 8.9[6.0-13.0] years). The proportions of NAC patients with criteria 1, 2 and 3 were, respectively, 45.9%, 49.2% and 63.1%. Patients who had dyslipidemia at the time of diagnosis presented a significantly higher risk of NAC disease (criterion 3; OR 7.05[1.44-34.45]; P=0.016). NAC patients (criterion 2) had a higher proportion of subjects with incident chronic kidney disease and eye disorders, and NAC patients (criterion 3) had a higher proportion of incident chronic kidney disease, nephrolithiasis and dyslipidemia than AC patients. Conclusion: The present study shows a strikingly high prevalence of NAC patients in the clinical practice of Spanish endocrinologists. Ocular strabismus, a common condition in the present generation is an absolute risk factor for amblyopia and blinding premorbid visual loss. Despite the availability of new optometry tools with eye-tracking data, the issues persist in attaining accuracy and reliability in diagnosing strabismus. These two concerns are specifically accommodated in this study by the proposed novel approach that involves CNNs with eye-tracking datasets from subjects. The presented work aims to improve the accuracy of diagnostics in ophthalmology utilizing the integration of the further proposed algorithms into an automatic strabismus detection system. For this purpose, the proposed FedCNN model combines the CNN with eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) and uses the Gaze deviation (GaDe) images to capture dynamic eye movements. This method tries to make the feature extraction as accurate as possible in its best working state to enhance the diagnosis precision. The model proves to be accurate, reaching 95.2%, which is even more prominent because of the more or less detailed connection layer of the CNN, which is used for the selection of features designated for such tasks of strabismus recognition. Keratoconus (KC) is an irreversible blinding eye disease; therefore, early screening of KC suspects (KCS) is crucial for protecting patients' quality of life. Scheimpflug imaging is a commonly used screening device in clinical practice. We aimed to evaluate the diagnostic ability of a Scheimpflug imaging device (Scansys) for KC and KCS and compared it with other Scheimpflug-based devices (Pentacam and Corvis ST). This prospective case-control study included 107 normal eyes, 72 KCS, and 57 KC. Scansys screening index Keratoconus probability (KCP) showed excellent performance in diagnosing KC at a cutoff value of 16.4 (area under the receiver operating characteristic [AUROC] = 1.000), with 100% sensitivity and 98.11% specificity. KCP had a better KCS diagnostic ability at a cutoff value of 8.9 (AUROC = 0.813) than Corvis biomechanical index (CBI, AUROC = 0.764), reaching 67.61% sensitivity and 85.85% specificity. Pentacam screening index Belin/Ambrósio enhanced ectasia display deviation (BAD-D) showed the best performance with 92.96% sensitivity and 89.62% specificity at a cutoff value of 1.525 (AUROC = 0.970) in diagnosing KCS. Background: The clinical approach to inherited eye diseases has evolved due to advances in genetic testing methods and treatment opportunities. However, no data are available on the current practices of ophthalmologists in countries, such as Turkey, with higher rates of consanguinity and inherited eye diseases. The aim of this study was to evaluate the current practices, knowledge, and needs of ophthalmologists in Turkey regarding inherited eye diseases. Methods: A 29-item self-administered survey with a branching algorithm was developed through Google Forms. The survey link was sent to 2983 ophthalmologists in Turkey. The survey assessed respondents' occupational characteristics, current practices, knowledge about available diagnostic and therapeutic options, and opinions on improving continuing education and healthcare services. Results: Responses from 414 ophthalmologists (20.8%) were analyzed. The responses suggested that ophthalmologists mainly collaborate with medical geneticists in respect of inherited eye diseases. The majority of ophthalmologists reported a lack of knowledge about genetic diagnostic tests, and approximately 90% of the ophthalmologists thought training after residency was inadequate for inherited eye diseases. Conclusion: This is the most extensive survey exploring ophthalmologists' practice patterns and needs in a setting without specialists or specialized centers in ophthalmic genetics. Purpose: To describe the frequency of uveitis recurrences in patients with non-infectious uveitis treated with the biosimilar infliximab-dyyb. Design: Retrospective case series. Methods: Records of uveitis patients treated with the biosimilar infliximab-dyyb between 2016 and 2022 at two institutions were reviewed. Data extracted included patient demographics, diagnosis, previous originator infliximab use, additional immunosuppression medications, infliximab-dyyb use, reason for switch, disease activity, and follow-up time. Results: A total of 14 patients were identified. Seven patients were switched from originator infliximab to a biosimilar for nonmedical/non-ocular reasons (insurance prompted the switch). One patient was started directly on infliximab-dyyb due to active joint disease despite well-controlled uveitis. None of these eight patients developed inflammation after the switch. Six patients were started directly on infliximab-dyyb due to poorly controlled uveitis. Of these, five patients achieved disease quiescence during follow-up. The mean dose of originator was 1.79 mg/kg/week, with a median dosing schedule of 4 weeks prior to therapy with infliximab-dyyb. The mean final infliximab-dyyb dosage was 1.81 mg/kg/week, with a median dosing schedule of 4 weeks. The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate eye illnesses in para athletes in the winter and summer settings. A search was conducted using PubMed-Medline, EbscoHost, and Web of Science for full-text original research articles published anytime until November 2022. Studies that reported quantitative data on eye illness in highly active individuals and para athletes, at any level of performance (elite/nonelite/ recreational), aged 15–75 yrs were included. Of the eight studies included, two reported eye pathologies in athletes with visual impairment only, and six studies reported specific factors associated with eye illnesses in various impairments. Illnesses in the eye and adnexa were more prevalent in winter (incidence: 1.6–2.2/1000 athlete days) compared to summer (incidence: 0.3–0.5/1000 athlete days) settings. Eye illnesses were reported in athletes with limb deficiency (33.5%), spinal cord injury (29.4%), visual impairment (10.6%), and central neurologic impairment (15.2%). The findings of this review indicate that: (1) eye illness in para athletes is an understudied area; and (2) eye illnesses are present in athletes with impairments other than visual impairment. There is a need for further research on eye illness, particularly in winter sports settings to understand the types and nature of eye illness affecting para athletes during competition and training settings. • Prenatal ultrasound diagnosis of complete cryptophthalmos, aphakia, and corneal vascularization. • Fetal ocular malformations are often associated with malformations of other organs. • This case provides a new basis for prenatal diagnosis of this rare eye disease. Complete cryptophthalmos, congenital aphakia, and corneal vascularization are relatively uncommon congenital eye malformations during the fetal period. Herein, we report a case of a fetus with complete cryptophthalmos, congenital aphakia, and corneal vascularization in both eyes and review previous prenatal reports of related cases. The patient was a 27-year-old pregnant woman, gravida 2, para 1, who was referred to our hospital for consultation at 23 weeks of gestation due to a diagnosis of fetal right renal agenesis at an external hospital. The ultrasound system of our hospital diagnosed the fetus with complete cryptophthalmos, congenital aphakia, and corneal vascularization, which was verified under the postnatal water basin test, anatomical and pathological sections. Fetal ocular malformations are often associated with malformations of other organs, and if ultrasound findings are associated with such malformations, attention should be paid to the ocular examination to avoid missing the diagnosis. To update the Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) simplified severity scale for risk of late age-related macular degeneration (AMD), including incorporation of reticular pseudodrusen (RPD), and to perform external validation on the Age-Related Eye Disease Study 2 (AREDS2). Post hoc analysis of 2 clinical trial cohorts: AREDS and AREDS2. Participants with no late AMD in either eye at baseline in AREDS (n = 2719) and AREDS2 (n = 1472). Five-year rates of progression to late AMD were calculated according to levels 0 to 4 on the simplified severity scale after 2 updates: (1) noncentral geographic atrophy (GA) considered part of the outcome, rather than a risk feature, and (2) scale separation according to RPD status (determined by validated deep learning grading of color fundus photographs). Five-year rate of progression to late AMD (defined as neovascular AMD or any GA). In the AREDS, after the first scale update, the 5-year rates of progression to late AMD for levels 0 to 4 were 0.3%, 4.5%, 12.9%, 32.2%, and 55.6%, respectively. As the final simplified severity scale, the 5-year progression rates for levels 0 to 4 were 0.3%, 4.3%, 11.6%, 26.7%, and 50.0%, respectively, for participants without RPD at baseline and 2.8%, 8.0%, 29.0%, 58.7%, and 72.2%, respectively, for participants with RPD at baseline. In external validation on the AREDS2, for levels 2 to 4, the progression rates were similar: 15.0%, 27.7%, and 45.7% (RPD absent) and 26.2%, 46.0%, and 73.0% (RPD present), respectively. The AREDS AMD simplified severity scale has been modernized with 2 important updates. The new scale for individuals without RPD has 5-year progression rates of approximately 0.5%, 4%, 12%, 25%, and 50%, such that the rates on the original scale remain accurate. The new scale for individuals with RPD has 5-year progression rates of approximately 3%, 8%, 30%, 60%, and 70%, that is, approximately double for most levels. This scale fits updated definitions of late AMD, has increased prognostic accuracy, seems generalizable to similar populations, but remains simple for broad risk categorization. Objective: The relationship between smoking and onset of glaucoma has been inconsistent. However, there is a gap in understanding whether tobacco smoking is linked to a worse visual impairment in different glaucoma subtypes. The objective of this study was to examine the association between smoking behavior and vision-related disability in people who have different glaucoma subtypes. Methods: A total of 283 people with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG), primary angle closure glaucoma (PACG), normal tension glaucoma (NTG), and pseudo-exfoliative (PEX) were included in this cross-sectional study. The recruitment of study participants was organized in one of two tertiary centers for eye diseases in Belgrade, Serbia, during their regular eye checks. Information about the duration and quantity of smoking was self-reported. Vision-related impairment was quantified using a validated Glaucoma Quality of Life-15 (GQL-15) questionnaire. Results: A series of multiple linear regression models adjusted for age, gender, severity of glaucoma, lifestyle, and mobility, intraocular pressure level, visual parameters, previous and current therapy, and chronic illnesses suggested that a higher quantity of cigarettes smoked per day was associated with poorer vision-related quality of life only among people with NTG subtypes. This association was absent when smoking duration was tested in the adjusted linear regression model. Conclusion: A higher number of cigarettes smoked daily was associated with poorer vision-related impairment among people who have NTG, but not other glaucoma subtypes. Background: To clarify the risk of adverse ocular events following influenza vaccination. Methods: This self-controlled case series study used a claims database linked to vaccination records of a large city in Japan between April 2014 and September 2021. Individuals aged ≥ 65 years who developed adverse ocular events during the follow-up period were included. The exposure was influenza vaccination. The primary outcome was defined as the occurrence of at least one of the following five eye diseases: uveitis, scleritis, retinal vein occlusion, retinal artery occlusion, or optic neuritis. Conditional Poisson regression was used to estimate the within-subject incidence rate ratio of ocular adverse events during the risk period (0–56 days after vaccination) compared to the control period. Results: A total of 4,527 cases were eligible for the study (median age, 74 years; male, 42%). The incidence rate ratio for the outcome during the risk period was 0.99 (95% confidence interval, 0.87 to 1.14). No increased risk was observed for individual components of the outcome either; the incidence rate ratio was 0.94 (0.78 to 1.13) for uveitis, 1.17 (0.86 to 1.59) for scleritis, 0.98 (0.76 to 1.27) for retinal vein occlusion, 0.89 (0.42 to 1.87) for retinal artery occlusion, and 0.87 (0.44 to 1.70) for optic neuritis. Conclusions: This self-controlled case series showed no apparent increase in the risk of adverse ocular events after influenza vaccination among older adults. These results mitigate the concerns of older adults who may hesitate to receive influenza vaccination for fear of adverse ocular events. The segmentation of retinal vessels is vital for timely diagnosis. and treatment of various eye diseases. However, due to inherent characteristics of retinal vessels in fundus images such as changes in thickness, direction, and complexity of vessels, as well as imbalanced contrast between background and vessels, segmenting retinal vessels continues to pose significant challenges. Also, despite advancements in CNNbased methods, challenges such as insufficient extraction of structural information, complexity, overfitting, preference for local information, and poor performance in noisy conditions persist. To address these drawbacks, in this paper we proposed a novel modified U-Net named DABT-U-Net. Our method enhances discriminative capability by introducing Hierarchical Dilated Convolution (HDC), Dual Attentive BConvLSTM, and Multi-Head Self-Attention (MHSA) blocks. Additionally, we adopt a collaborative patch-based training approach to mitigate data scarcity and overfitting. Evaluation on the DRIVE and STARE datasets shows that DABT-U-Net achieves superior accuracy, sensitivity, and F1 score compared to existing methods, demonstrating its effectiveness in retinal vessel segmentation. Specifically, our proposed method demonstrates improvements in accuracy, sensitivity, and F1 score by 0.32%, 0.61%, and 0.14%, respectively, on the DRIVE dataset, and by 0.07%, 0.83%, and 0.14% on the STARE dataset compared to a less effective approach. The escalating global prevalence of blindness remains a pressing concern, with eye diseases representing the primary culprits behind this issue. Vision is integral to various aspects of human life, underscoring the significance of effective eye disease detection. Presently, disease detection relies largely on manual methods, which are susceptible to misdiagnosis. However, the advent of technology has paved the way for disease detection through the application of deep learning methodologies. Deep learning exhibits substantial potential in disease detection, particularly when applied to image data, as attested by its accuracy in algorithmic assessments. This research introduces a novel approach to disease detection, specifically transfer learning-based deep learning. The study seeks to evaluate and compare the performance of various models, including EfficientNetB3, DenseNet-121, VGG-16, and ResNet-152, in identifying three prevalent eye diseases: cataract, diabetic retinopathy, and glaucoma, utilizing retinal fundus image data. Extensive experimentation reveals that the DenseNet-121 model achieves the highest accuracy levels, boasting precision, recall, F1-score, and accuracy values of 96.5%, 96%, 96.25%, and 96.20%, respectively. Glaucoma is an eye disease that damages the optic nerve (or retina) and impairs vision. This disease can be prevented with regular checkups, but this increases the workload for professionals and the time it takes to get results. So an automated method using deep learning would be helpful for detection of disease. In order to shorten the diagnosis time for glaucoma, this paper proposed a deep learning based method for automatic glaucoma detection. The experiments are conducted on glaucoma datasets available on Kaggle. This paper used transfer learning based pretrained models namely DenseNet169, MobileNet, InceptionV3, Xception, ReseNet152V2,and VGG19. Among all models DenseNet169 gives best result with accuracy 0.993590 and precision and recall of 0.993671 and 0.9935895 respectively. Background Methods Results Conclusion Neurovascular interfaces, specifically the blood–brain barrier (BBB) and blood–retinal barrier (BRB), play pivotal roles in maintaining the homeostasis of the central nervous system (CNS). For a long time, these structures were seen only as a way of protection, but we currently know that they have a critical role in CNS (dys)function. Several studies have identified neurovascular alterations in early stages of brain and eye diseases, contributing to the pathophysiology of such conditions. More recently, interesting data have also highlighted the importance of neurovasculature in psychiatric disorders.Using the PubMed database, we brought together the evidence concerning the changes in BBB and BRB under psychiatric conditions, with a focus on anxiety, major depressive disorder (MDD), attention‐deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and drug abuse, specifically related with methamphetamine (METH) and cocaine consumption.We summarized the main findings obtained from in vitro and animal studies, as well as clinical research that has been undertaken to identify neurovascular abnormalities upon such neuropsychiatric disorders. The drivers of barrier alterations were examined, namely the role of neuroinflammation, while reporting putative barrier‐associated biomarkers of these disorders.This review underscores the critical need for a deeper understanding of BBB and BRB function in neuropsychiatric conditions and their potential as therapeutic targets while elucidating the key players involved. The innovative approaches to managing these complex disorders are also addressed while bridging the gap concerning what is currently known regarding the association between neuropsychiatric conditions and their vascular implications. Simple Summary: Conjunctival melanoma (Co-M) is a rare and aggressive eye surface cancer. It is often misdiagnosed or overlooked, leading to late diagnosis. Co-M can cause sight loss and even eye loss, impacting quality-of-life. The numbers of new cases globally are rising at alarming rates. There is no standard treatment for Co-M and management varies between eye cancer centres. In ~25% of cases the cancer spreads elsewhere in the body, which can lead to death. The aim of this review is to concisely present what is currently known about Co-M presentation, its development and progression, clinical management and outcomes, and finally summarise future directions for research into novel therapies. Conjunctival melanoma (Co-M) is an aggressive, invasive eye and eyelid cancer. Its global incidence of ~1 in a million is increasing at a rate ratio of ~1.4, but this rises sharply in over 65-year-olds. Although rare, Co-M has a devastating impact on the lives of those who develop it. Co-M is often misdiagnosed or overlooked, leading to vision loss either from the destructive effects of the tumour or side effects of therapy, facial disfigurement from radical surgery, and death from metastases. Due to its rarity, there is limited evidence for diagnosis and management; hence, there is no standardised treatment and not all cases are referred to a specialised ocular oncology centre. Recent progress in cancer immunology and genetics have revolutionised the treatment of cutaneous melanomas, which share some similarities to Co-M. Importantly, a better understanding of Co-M and its precursor lesions is urgently needed to lead to the development of novel targeted and immunotherapies both for local tumour control and disseminated disease. This review aims to provide a comprehensive clinical overview of the current knowledge regarding Co-M, its epidemiology, pathogenesis, presentation, diagnosis and recent changes in the classification of its precursor lesions, management, and recent advances in novel biological therapies for personalised treatment of this disease. Dry eye disease (DED) is a common eye disease in clinical practice. The crucial pathogenesis of DED is that hyperosmolarity activates oxidative stress signaling pathways in corneal epithelial and immune cells and, thus, produces inflammatory molecules. The complex pathological changes in the dry eye still need to be elucidated to facilitate treatment. In this study, we found that astaxanthin (AST) can protect against DED through the SLC7A11/GPX4 pathway. After treatment with AST, the SLC7A11/GPX4 pathway was positively activated in DED both in vivo and in vitro, accompanied by enhanced autophagy and decreased ferroptosis. In hyperosmolarity-induced DED corneal epithelial cells, AST increased the expression of ferritin to promote iron storage and reduce Fe2+ overload. It increased glutathione (GSH) and GPX4, scavenged reactive oxygen species (ROS) and lipid peroxide, and rescued the mitochondrial structure to prevent ferroptosis. Furthermore, inhibition of ferroptosis by ferrostatin-1 (Fer-1), iron chelator deferoxamine mesylate (DFO), or AST could activate healthy autophagic flux. In addition, in a dry eye mouse model, AST upregulated SLC7A11 and GPX4 and inhibited ferroptosis. To summarize, we found that AST can ameliorate DED by reinforcing the SLC7A11/GPX4 pathway, which mainly affects oxidative stress, autophagy, and ferroptosis processes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In today's globalized society, ophthalmologists can examine people of different ethnicities regardless of where they live. The frequency of disease-causing genes varies according to a patient's ethnic background. We explain genetic findings for Japanese patients with inherited eye diseases. Ocular genetics has made great advances over the past 30 years. For example, detecting mutations at nucleotide position 11778 in mitochondrial DNA was useful in the genetic diagnosis of Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON). I evaluated the genotype-phenotype relationship in cases of corneal dystrophy and inherited retinal dystrophy (IRD). I identified the entire exon sequence of the eyes shut homolog (EYS) gene in patients with autosomal recessive retinitis pigmentosa (RP). EYS gene mutations are the most frequent cause of autosomal recessive RP. RPGRIP1 may be a common causative gene with early-onset severe retinal dystrophy, including Leber congenital amaurosis. However, some genes have complex structures that are difficult to analyze, including the OPN1LW/OPN1MW gene cluster in blue cone monochromacy and the IKBKG/NEMO genes in incontinentia pigmenti. This review will also present two cases with uniparental disomy, a case of IRD with double mutations, and a case with RP complicated with LHON-like neuropathy. Precise understanding of the effects of genetic variants may reveal differences in the clinical characteristics of patients with the same variant. When starting genome medicine, accurately diagnosing the patient, making accurate prediction, determining the genetic pattern, and providing genetic counseling are important. Key Clinical Message: It is important to recognize and manage gastrointestinal symptoms in patients with BD, as they are linked to high rates of mortality and morbidity. BD can affect any part of the gastrointestinal tract, and prompt diagnosis and appropriate treatment are essential to prevent complications. Additionally, the diagnosis of BD is primarily based on clinical factors due to the lack of pathognomonic laboratory tests. Behçet's disease (BD) is an idiopathic, chronic, and relapsing multi‐systemic vasculitis characterized by recurrent skin lesions and eye disease. There is no pathognomonic laboratory testing; the diagnosis is made mainly on clinical factors. BD symptoms affecting the gastrointestinal (GI) system are particularly important as they are linked to high rates of mortality and morbidity. Although ileocecal involvement is most frequently mentioned, BD can affect any part of the GI tract. There are techniques for keeping track of disease activity during treatment, but they are not ideal. We present a case of a 38‐year‐old male patient admitted to the ICU with a history of black tarry stools of 1‐month duration, fresh blood per rectum 5 to 7 times a day associated with fever, chills, and back and nonspecific joint pain for five days. The aim of the research was to examine the state of stereoscopic visual acuity in children with different degrees of visual impairment. The study included 240 respondents, ranging in age from 3 to 18 years old. All respondents were examined in at the orthoptic-pleoptic department of the Clinic for Eye Diseases at the University Clinical Center in Tuzla. The respondents were divided into three age groups, from 3 to 6 years old, from 7 to 14 years old and third group from 15 to 18 years old. Groups were equal in terms of number of respondents, age and gender. For data processing, SPSS 17.0 for Windows was used, applying descriptive statistics, Mann-Whitney test, p-value and χ² test. After data analysis, considering results of the research, it can be concluded that, for the degree of visual impairment variable, there is statistical significance across all age groups. The research emphasizes the importance of timely educational and rehabilitative treatment in the rehabilitation process of children with stereovision dysfunction at various degrees of visual impairment. Objectives: The present study was to evaluate the prevalence of dry eye disease in patients with different type of allergic conjunctivitis. Methods: A detailed history of demographic characteristics, onset, duration, and progression of ocular symptoms, past and personal history, treatment history and clinical findings were taken to all allergic conjunctivitis patients. The patients of AC were divided into SAC (seasonal allergic conjunctivitis), PAC (perennial allergic conjunctivitis), and VKC (vernal keratoconjunctivitis). Diagnosis of dry eye diseases (DED) in all the diagnosed cases of AC was made based on Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) questionnaire, TFBUT, and Schirmer’s test. Results: A total of 100 diagnosed cases of AC was enrolled. Mean age of male and female cases were 29.76 ± 18.56 years and 17.87 ± 12.32 years respectively. (55%) patients had Seasonal Allergic Conjunctivitis (SAC). 24% patients had Perennial Allergic Conjunctivitis (PAC). And 21% cases had Vernal Keratoconjunctivitis (VKC). Mild, moderate, and severe cases of allergic conjunctivitis were 24%, 18% and 29% respectively. Mean of OSDI score of PAC cases (27.28±13.45) was higher as compared to SAC (24.76± 11.98) and VKC cases (12.56±7.42). Similarly, mean of TFBUT score was higher in SAC cases (16.12± 6.54) as compared to PAC (14.45±7.21) and VKC cases (13.87±5.67). And the mean of Schirmers score as much more higher in VKC cases (23.12±12.76) as compared to PAC (15.54±9.76) and SAC cases (11.86± 6.47). Conclusions: Male population were preponderance to allergic conjunctivitis. Prevalence of dry eye disease is more associated with PAC than SAC and VKC. Purpose: To examine age‐related macular degeneration (AMD) and retinal pigment epithelium (RPE)–Bruch's membrane (BrM) complex volume associations in monozygotic twin pairs. Methods: In this study, 106 elderly twins (53 twin pairs) from the Finnish Twin Cohort study were recruited. Each participant underwent dilated 35‐degree digital colour fundus photography (CFP), and spectral domain optical coherence tomography (OCT) and replied to a structured study questionnaire. The CFPs were graded according to the Age‐Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) classification. The OCT images were segmented and volumetric data of the RPE‐BrM complex volume was calculated with the Orion™ software. The worse eye according to AREDS classification was used for the analysis. Results: Twenty‐nine (55%) of the twin pairs were discordant with regard to AREDS classification. Fourteen (26%) pairs were discordant with one twin participant having AMD (AREDS 2–4) and the other being unaffected (AREDS 1). Four (8%) pairs had one twin participant with intermediate or late AMD (AREDS 3–4) versus the other being unaffected (AREDS 1). The within‐pair polychoric correlation for AREDS was 0.605 (95% confidence interval 0.418–0.792). In multivariate analysis intermediate and late AMD as well as age associated with RPE‐BrM complex volume. RPE‐BrM complex volume showed a within twin pair correlation, r = 0.430 (95% confidence interval 0.172–0.688, p < 0.01). Conclusion: A substantial proportion of monozygotic twin pairs are discordant with regard to age‐related macular degeneration phenotype. Treatment of ocular diseases presents unique challenges and opportunities for the clinician and for the clinical pharmacologist. Ophthalmic pharmaceuticals, typically given as liquids, require consideration of solubility, physiological pH, and osmolarity, as well as sterility and stability, which in turn requires optimal pharmaceutics. Ocular tissue levels are challenging to obtain in humans, and the clinical pharmacokinetics is typically blood levels, which are primarily related to safety, rather than efficacy. The eye is a closed compartment with multiple physiological barriers with esterases and transporters, but relatively little cytochrome oxidases. Delivery routes include topical, intravitreal, and systemic. Patient dosing involves not only adherence issues common to all chronic diseases, but also performance requirements on eye drop instillation. Therapeutically, ocular diseases and their pharmacological treatments include both those analogous to systemic diseases (e.g., inflammation, infection, and neuronal degeneration) and those unique to the eye (e.g., cataract and myopia). Keyhole aqueduct syndrome is a rare progressive neurodegenerative disorder describing a unique set of neuro-ophthalmologic, neuroimaging, and histopathological findings on autopsy. A midline mesencephalic cleft communicating with the cerebral aqueduct resembling syrinx is seen on imaging and histopathology. There are 9 cases published in the literature. We encountered a patient with vertical nystagmus, internuclear ophthalmoplegia, and progressive ataxia who has a midline cleft connecting the cerebral aqueduct with the interpeduncular cistern highlighting a distinguishing feature of this syndrome. Purpose: To determine the misclassification rate of the keratoconus percentage (KISA%) index efficacy in eyes with progressive keratoconus. Methods: This was a retrospective case-control study of consecutive patients with confirmed progressive keratoconus and a contemporaneous normal control group with 1.00 diopters or greater regular astigmatism. Scheimpflug imaging (Pentacam HR) was obtained for all patients. KISA% index and inferior-superior (IS) values were obtained from the Pentacam topometric/keratoconus staging map. Receiver operating characteristic curves were generated to determine the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC), sensitivity, and specificity values. Results: There were 160 eyes from 160 patients evaluated, including 80 eyes from 80 patients with progressive keratoconus and 80 eyes from 80 control patients. There were 20 eyes (25%) with progressive keratoconus misclassified by the KISA% index, with 16 eyes (20%) of the progressive keratoconus cohort classified as normal (ie, KISA% < 60). There were 4 eyes (5%) with progressive keratoconus that would classify as having "normal topography" using the published criteria for very asymmetric ectasia with normal topography of KISA% less than 60 and IS value less than 1.45. All controls had a KISA% index value of less than 15. The optimal cut-off value to distinguish cohorts was 15.31 (AUROC = 0.972, 93.75% sensitivity). KISA% index values of 60 and 100 achieved low sensitivity (80% and 73.75%, respectively). Conclusions: The KISA% index misclassified a significant proportion of eyes with progressive keratoconus as normal. Although highly specific for clinical keratoconus, the KISA% index lacks sensitivity, does not effectively discriminate between normal and abnormal topography, and thus should not be used in large data analysis or artificial intelligence–based modeling. The aim of this study is to comprehensively evaluate the effect of smartphone use on the eye. Twenty-two children, aged 8-16 years, participated in this study. A self-administered questionnaire about smartphone usage time, outdoor activities, and sleep time to obtain dry eye was applied to the child and parents. An ocular surface disease index (OSDI), tear break-up time (TBUT), blink time, autorefractometer, optical biometry, accommodation, contrast sensitivity, and optical coherence tomography tests were applied before a 5-min video watching, and during the video session we counted the complete -incomplete blinks. After video watching, we did the tests. After the tests, we again applied a 5-min video watching and after the video we tested all the parameters again, and finally, following a 5-min resting period, we tested the parameters again. We found no difference between the groups in terms of OSDI scores. Children with punctate epithelial erosions and time spent on the phone have a statistical relation. TBUT also differs statistically before and after test periods (p =.014), since complete blinks did not differ but incomplete blinks differed before and after video watching. The nearpoint of convergence also differs after video watching (p =.008) and anterior chamber depth (ACD) decreases even after the short-time video watching period. On the contrary, we did not find any effect of short-time smartphone watching on auto-keratometer values and retinal-choroidal thickness. This is the first comprehensive study on the short-term effects of smartphone on the paediatric age group. Even 10 min of smartphone can have an effect on TBUT, incomplete blinks, nearpoint of convergence break-recovery, and ACD. Dry eye disease is a multifactorial condition characterised by tear film instability, hyperosmolarity and ocular surface inflammation. Understanding the epidemiology of dry eye disease and recognising both modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors can assist eye care practitioners in assessing, treating, and managing patients with the condition. This review considers current knowledge surrounding its incidence and prevalence, as well as associated demographic, systemic, ocular, and iatrogenic, and lifestyle-related modifiable risk factors. Population-based prevalence estimates vary according to the diagnostic criteria used to define dry eye disease, as well as severity and demographic characteristics of the population. Considering recent data and variable population demographics, conservative prevalence estimates suggest that 10–20% of the population over 40 years of age report moderate to severe symptoms and/or seek treatment for dry eye disease. Individuals with specific non-modifiable demographic risk factors may be at increased risk of developing dry eye disease. Advanced age, female sex and East Asian ethnicity have been identified as key non-modifiable demographic features predisposing individuals to dry eye disease. Systemic conditions that have been associated with an increased risk of dry eye disease include migraine, Sjögren syndrome, connective tissue disorders, mental health disorders, diabetes mellitus and androgen deficiency. Medications that may contribute to this risk include antidepressants, antihistamines, and hormone replacement therapy. Ocular and iatrogenic risk factors of dry eye disease include blepharitis, Demodex infestation, ocular surgery, blink completeness, contact lens wear, and topical ophthalmic medications. A range of modifiable lifestyle factors that can increase the risk of dry eye disease have also been identified, including low humidity environments, digital screen use, quality of sleep, diet, and eye cosmetic wear. Dry eye is a common disease affecting millions globally. Eye diseases are defined as disorders or diseases that damage the tissue and related parts of the eyes. They appear in various types and can be either minor, meaning that they do not last long, or permanent blindness. Cataracts, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy are all eye illnesses that can cause vision loss if not discovered and treated early on. Automated classification of these diseases from fundus images can empower quicker diagnoses and interventions. Our research aims to create a robust model, BayeSVM500, for eye disease classification to enhance medical technology and improve patient outcomes. In this study, we develop models to classify images accurately. We start by preprocessing fundus images using contrast enhancement, normalization, and resizing. We then leverage several state-of-the-art deep convolutional neural network pre-trained models, including VGG16, VGG19, ResNet50, EfficientNet, and DenseNet, to extract deep features. To reduce feature dimensionality, we employ techniques such as principal component analysis, feature agglomeration, correlation analysis, variance thresholding, and feature importance rankings. Using these refined features, we train various traditional machine learning models as well as ensemble methods. Our best model, named BayeSVM500, is a Support Vector Machine classifier trained on EfficientNet features reduced to 500 dimensions via PCA, achieving 93.65 ± 1.05% accuracy. Bayesian hyperparameter optimization further improved performance to 95.33 ± 0.60%. Through comprehensive feature engineering and model optimization, we demonstrate highly accurate eye disease classification from fundus images, comparable to or superior to previous benchmarks. Background: Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a connective tissue disorder in which the Type 1 collagen is defective. The eye is a structure rich in collagen Type 1 and is heavily impacted by the disease. Many vision-threatening eye diseases have been associated with OI. The onset of these diseases also tend to occur at an earlier age in individuals with OI. Despite the research on these risks, appropriate ophthalmological screening or care guidelines for individuals with OI remain unknown. As such, the purpose of this scoping review was to explore and describe existing ophthalmological screening and care guidelines to orient OI patient care. Main body: A scoping review based on the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) methodology was conducted. A search of databases (PubMed and Medline) was completed in consultation with a research librarian. A total of 256 studies were imported for screening. Primary sources matching the inclusion and exclusion criteria were screened, extracted, and analyzed using Covidence. Conclusion: A total of 12 primary articles met inclusion and exclusion criteria, containing case reports, case series and cohort studies. Despite the risk of blindness associated with the consequences of OI on the eye, the primary literature fails to provide detailed screening and care guidelines aimed at identifying disease early. We provide general recommendations based on the review findings to guide the ophthalmological care of patients with OI and call upon the experts to convene globally to create screening guidelines. Further investigations of ophthalmological screening are warranted to limit these vision-threatening risks with early detection and treatment. Background: Over 80% of blindness in Kenya is due to curable or preventable causes and 7.5 m Kenyans currently need eye services. Embedding sociodemographic data collection into screening programmes could help identify the groups facing systematic barriers to care. We aimed to determine the sociodemographic characteristics that were associated with access among patients diagnosed with an eye problem and referred for treatment in the Vision Impact Programme, currently operating in Meru County. Method: We used an embedded, pragmatic, cross-sectional design. A list of sociodemographic questions was developed with input from key stakeholders. The final question set included the following domains: age, gender, religion, marital status, disability, education, occupation, income, housing, assets, and health insurance. These were integrated into an app that is used to screen, refer, and check-in (register) participants within a major eye screening programme. We gathered data from 4,240 people who screened positive and were referred to their local outreach treatment clinic. We used logistic regression to identify which groups were facing the greatest barriers to accessing care. Results: A quarter of those screened between April – July 2023 were found to have an eye problem and were referred, however only 46% of these people were able to access care. In our fully adjusted model, at the 0.05 level there were no statistically significant differences in the odds of attendance within the domains of disability, health insurance, housing, income, or religion. Strong evidence (p < 0.001) was found of an association between access and age, gender, and occupation; with males, younger adults, and those working in sales, services and manual jobs the least likely to receive care. Conclusions: Access to essential eye services is low and unequal in Meru, with less than a third of those aged 18–44 receiving the care they need. 1. The objective of the present study was to examine the effect of lighting programs and light colour on ocular health variables as welfare indicators in Ross 308 broilers.2. A total of 384, male, one-d-old broiler chickens (Ross 308) were placed in a completely randomised design with a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of lighting program (continuous or intermittent) and light colour (white and green LED light). Ross 308 broilers under restricted lighting had 18 h of light (18 L:6D), while those under intermittent lighting had cycles of 17 L:3D:1 L:3D throughout the experimental period, which lasted 42 d.3. At the end of the experiment, all eyes of birds (n = 96 birds) underwent a complete ophthalmic examination, which included the Schirmer tear test I, intraocular pressure and eye dimensions. In addition, 32 broilers (eight birds per trial groups) aged 42 d underwent ophthalmic examination to include assessment of ocular ultrasound biometry.4. Light colour had a significant influence on the mean intraocular pressure (p < 0.001). The Ross 308 broilers kept with intermittent lighting had lower eye weights (2.29 g; p < 0.05), palpebral fissure length (14.39 mm; p < 0.01), eye dorsoventral diameter (17.46 mm; p < 0.05), anteroposterior size (13.70 mm; p < 0.01) and corneal dorsoventral diameter (7.81 mm; p < 0.05) compared to those reared under restricted lighting.5. In conclusion, these values for Ross 308 broilers may be applied in poultry ophthalmology to detect early eye disease symptoms and to help the diagnosis of tear disorders that could cause economic losses and welfare issues. Diabetic eye detection has become a major concern across the globe, which could be effectively addressed by automated detection using a deep convolutional neural network (DCNN). CNN models have better detection and classification accuracy than other state-of-theart models. In this paper, a differential evolution (DE)-optimized CNN has been proposed for the single-step classification of diabetic retinopathy (DR) and glaucoma images. DE has been used to find out the optimized values of four hyper-parameters of CNN, i.e., the number of filters in the first layer, the filter size, the number. of convolution layers, and the number of strides. Simulation has been done using three publicly available datasets, and the accuracy obtained is 87.8%, 92.3%, and 88.7%, respectively, which outperforms other models. No other state-of-the-art model has used DE for hyper-parameter tuning in CNN models. Also, no other additional segmentation approach or handcrafted features have been used. Glaucoma is an eye disease that often has no symptoms until it is advanced. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), after cataracts, glaucoma is the second-leading cause of permanent blindness globally and is expected to affect 111.8 million patients by 2040. Early detection of glaucoma is important to reduce the risk of permanent blindness. Detection is achieved by structural measurement of early thinning of the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL). The RNFL is the portion of the retina located outside the optic nerve head (ONH) and can be observed in fundus images of the retina. Analysis of retinal fundus images can be performed with computer assistance using machine learning, especially deep learning. This study proposes a deep learning-based model, a convolutional neural network (CNN) using the EfficientNet architecture combined with long short-term memory (LSTM), for laucoma detection. Using ACRIMA, DRISHTI-GS, and RIM-ONE DL datasets with k-fold cross-validation, the model achieved high performance on the ACRIMA dataset: accuracy 0.9799, loss 0.0596, precision 0.9802, sensitivity 0.9799, specificity 0.9771, and F1score 0.9799. Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a common eye disease that results in vision loss by damaging the blood vessels. Diabetic patients are at high risk of developing DR owing to the damage of retinal lesions, thereby causing clots, injuries and bleeding. The disease leads to abnormal changes in the structure of the retina. Therefore, the timely detection and early treatment of eye diseases are essential for preventing people from vision loss. Ophthalmologists distinguish DR based on features such as exudes, microaneurysms, blood vessel area, hemorrhages, etc. An artificial intelligence (AI) method is proposed by ensembling a deep learning (DL) model with the explainable AI based Shapley additive (SHAP) method for DR image segmentation and classification. The proposed model uses fundus images to detect abnormalities in the eye. First, the DR images are collected from the Asia Pacific Tele-Ophthalmology Society 2019 blindness detection (APTOS 2019) dataset. Data augmentation is performed to artificially increase the size of a training dataset by generating new data samples from existing ones by rescaling, flipping, rotating, zooming, etc. In order to improve the quality and enhance specific features, pre-processing is performed. The pre-processed images are segmented using the improved U-Net model, where the severity of the disease gets predicted, and the fundus images are segmented using the trained model to attain precise abstraction of retinal blood vessels. Finally, the proposed study used the Shapley Additive Ensembled DenseNet-121 ResNet-50 (SAE-DR) model to detect DR disease based on the features. To improve the readability of the deep learning model, an explainable AI based Shapley additive method is proposed. Then, compare the results of the proposed model with existing state-of-the-art methods. The simulation results prove that the proposed model achieves superior detection performance with an accuracy of 98.69%, sensistivity of 86.23%, specificity of 97.54%, F-score of 90.26%, precision of 94.26% and processing time of 0.153 s. Globally, eye disorders have been a major issue, especially in developing nations where resources for technology and financing are limited. Due to its tremendous feature learning ability, CNN has obtained remarkable progress in the area of fundus images. Through appropriate analysis and examination of fundus images, computer-aided diagnosis may yield information with a standard value for experts in clinical diagnosis or screening. However, the majority of earlier investigations have focused on the identification of a particular fundus disease, and the accurate fast classification of multiple fundus diseases remains a major challenge. As a result, this research aims to propose a novel classification model for eye illnesses based on four major steps: (a) Pre-processing, (b) segmentation of blood vessels, (c) Extracting features and (d) Multi-classification of eye disease. In order to accurately classify the images, it is necessary to extract the essential informational characteristics from the segmented blood vessels. The categorization of eye diseases is carried out using a hybrid classifier that integrates the SqueezeNet and Long-Term Recurrent Convolutional Network (LRCN). We trained and validated our models using tenfold cross-validation tests on a database of fundus images including five categories: Normal, Retinitis Pigmentosa, Pathological Myopia, Maculopathy and Glaucoma. The efficacy of the presented approach is evaluated based on specificity, F1-score, recall, precision and accuracy of 98%, 97.8%, 97.6%, 98.4% and 98% respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Deep learning has enabled breakthroughs in automated diagnosis from medical imaging, with many successful applications in ophthalmology. However, standard medical image classification approaches only assess disease presence at the time of acquisition, neglecting the common clinical setting of longitudinal imaging. For slow, progressive eye diseases like age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG), patients undergo repeated imaging over time to track disease progression and forecasting the future risk of developing a disease is critical to properly plan treatment. Our proposed Longitudinal Transformer for Survival Analysis (LTSA) enables dynamic disease prognosis from longitudinal medical imaging, modeling the time to disease from sequences of fundus photography images captured over long, irregular time periods. Using longitudinal imaging data from the Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) and Ocular Hypertension Treatment Study (OHTS), LTSA significantly outperformed a single-image baseline in 19/20 head-to-head comparisons on late AMD prognosis and 18/20 comparisons on POAG prognosis. Background: Reversible Cerebral Vasoconstriction Syndrome (RCVS) involves cerebral vasculature constriction and dilation. While the exact pathophysiology of RCVS is still not fully understood, there are multiple etiological factors suggested to be implicated in triggering RCVS. We report two RCVS cases potentially linked to teprotumumab. Case 1: A 59-year-old female with Graves' eye disease (GED) developed leg weakness and headache after initiating teprotumumab, and neuroimaging studies revealed multifocal cerebral vasospasm (CVS). Verapamil mitigated vasospasm and the patient overall improved. Case 2: A 71-year-old female with GED developed thunderclap headache two months after starting teprotumumab, with subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) and CVS revealed on neuroimaging studies. The patient improved on verapamil and was discharged without deficits. Conclusions: The temporal correlation between teprotumumab initiation and RCVS's symptom onset raises concern for the potential involvement of teprotumumab in triggering RCVS via disrupting cerebrovascular modulation. Eye fundus diseases, such as retinal degenerative diseases, which lead to blindness in ≈12% of individuals aged >65 years, cause permanent damage to retinal cells. The antioxidant quercetin (QC) is promising for the effective treatment of eye fundus diseases; however, its poor solubility and low retention rate often limit its clinical application. Herein, an in situ ophthalmic tethered gold yarnball (GY) that doubles as an ocular retention agent and QC reservoir to overcome low fundus drug retention is developed. After intravitreal injection, QC@GYs enhance retinal cell leakage and internal limiting membrane permeability, facilitating the partial penetration of QC@GYs into the intraretinal tissue. The combination of retina‐tethered QC@GY and first‐level sustained release reduces macular degeneration in vivo by effectively regulating oxidative stress. Furthermore, the sustained release of QC preserves the viability of retinal pigment epithelium cells, reduces apoptosis, and suppresses drusen formation. This preservation of retinal morphology and function maximizes the therapeutic impact while minimizing the need for frequent intraocular administration. Purpose: Lubricant eye drops are the main therapeutic resource for dry eye disease (DED), with each drop representing the equivalent of ocular surface disease treatment. Thus, any reduction in the frequency of eye drop application reflects a degree of therapeutic success. Considering also the socioeconomic burden of DED, we investigated eye drop application frequency (DF) as a parameter to potentially track the success of therapy in severe DED. Hyaluronan (HA)‐containing eye drops have become the first choice for tear substitution in many countries, and recent data indicate that the average molecular weight (Mw) of HA determines the therapeutic efficacy of such eye drops. This post‐hoc subgroup analysis of a previously published multicentre prospective randomized open‐label study, HYLAN M, is set out to compare the effects of very high Mw HA (hylan A) eye drops to comparator eye drops, containing lower Mw HA (control). Methods: Patients with severe DED (n = 47), recruited as part of the larger HYLAN M prospective, multicentre, open‐label study, were randomized into two groups: hylan A and control group. In the hylan A group, 24 patients replaced their HA‐containing eye drops with eye drops containing 0.15% hylan A, whereas the 23 control patients continued to use comparator HA eye drops. The DF was recorded daily by all participants over 8 weeks, and other subjective and objective parameters of DED were assessed at the time of inclusion (baseline), as well as at week 4 and 8. Results: There was a significant decrease in DF in the hylan A users between the baseline and week 4 (p = 0.004), remaining stable until week 8. Indeed, in contrast to the baseline, the hylan A group had a significantly lower DF than the control group at weeks 4 (p = 0.018) and 8 (p = 0.008). Likewise, the ocular surface disease index (OSDI) improved significantly between the time of inclusion and week 4 (p < 0.001) in hylan A users, remaining stable until week 8. The OSDI was similar in both groups at the baseline but it was significantly lower in the hylan A group than in the control group at week 4 (p = 0.002), remaining lower at week 8. Such a decrease in the DF and OSDI was not witnessed in the control group at any time point. The objective parameters assessed did not differ significantly within or between the two groups. Conclusion: When treating severe DED, the DF can be significantly reduced by using very high Mw HA (3 MDa) lubricant eye drops, which better alleviate DED symptoms and decrease the OSDI scores. These drops not only provide an attractive and comfortable alternative for patients with severe DED but also offer the possibility of reducing the disease's socioeconomic burden, both for affected individuals and society as a whole. Purpose: Congenital aniridia is a serious eye disease characterized by absence of iris to various degrees. The aims of this study were to investigate health‐related quality of life (HRQoL) in adults with aniridia and assess the relationships between HRQoL, psychological status, ocular health and obesity. Methods: Twenty‐nine adults with congenital aniridia (48% male, aged 18–79 years) participated. HRQoL was measured with SF‐36 and the EQ visual analogue scale (VAS). The physical (PCS) and mental (MCS) component summaries of the SF‐36 were calculated with higher scores indicating better HRQoL. Symptoms of anxiety and depression were measured using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). Obesity was assessed with the Patient‐Reported Outcomes in Obesity (PROS). Sociodemographic characteristics, genetic variants and ocular and medical health variables were also analysed. Results: The participants scored significantly lower in the general health domain of the SF‐36 than the general population (65.2 vs. 75.3, p = 0.017). The EQ VAS score was also lower in the aniridia group (64.9 vs. 77.9, p = 0.021). Low PCS score was correlated with presence of ocular pain (p = 0.019), high HADS score (p = 0.017) and high PROS score (p = 0.009). Low MCS score was related to higher educational level (p = 0.038) and high HADS score (p < 0.001). High HADS and PROS scores were both related to low EQ VAS scores. Conclusion: Adults with congenital aniridia scored worse on certain measures of HRQoL than the general population. A bibliometric analysis is a quantitative study that utilises methods such as citation analysis to evaluate research performance. A bibliometric analysis could provide a valuable reference for ophthalmic researchers to understand the trends in epigenetics research. The number of studies on epigenetics in eye diseases has exceeded 5,000, but the progress and scope of epigenetic research on eye diseases remain unclear. The study aimed to bibliometrically analyse epigenetic research conducted in eye diseases. Studies concerning epigenetic research on eye diseases from 2000–2023 were searched using the Web of Science Core Collection. Following this, the included studies were analysed for citations, journals, keywords, authors, and countries, using the Bibliometrix package in R Studio. In total, 3758 studies were included in the analysis, including 3099 original articles, 599 reviews, 11 editorials, and 49 early access articles. Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science was the most published journal with 185 articles, and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America was the most cited journal, with 8727 citations. The journal with the highest h-index was Oncogene (h-index = 38).Renu A Kowluru from the Kresge Eye Institute, Wayne State University, Detroit, USA, had the most citations with 1,690 and the highest h-index (h-index = 23). China and the USA were the countries with the highest number of publications (1739) and total citations (40533), respectively. Furthermore, from 2000–2023, the top five frequent research topics were diabetic retinopathy, 522; microribonucleic acid, 469; retinoblastoma, 370; apoptosis, 268; and epigenetics, 206. The results of this bibliometric study provide the current status and trends of epigenetic research in eye diseases and will help researchers identify areas of current interest in the field, which should help highlight new research directions. Cystinosis is a rare autosomal recessive disease with an incidence 1 per 100,000–200,000 live births. It is caused by pathogenic variants of the cystinosin (CTNS) gene that lead to impaired cystine transport from lysosomes to cystosol, resulting in cystine accumulation in lysosomes and subsequent cellular dysfunction. The initial manifestation, cystine accumulation in proximal tubular cells (PTCs), causes renal Fanconi syndrome, which presents with proximal renal tubular acidosis and generalized dysfunction of the proximal tubule, including the presence of polyuria, glycosuria, phosphaturia, aminoaciduria, tubular proteinuria, growth retardation, and rickets. Eventually, glomerular involvement, glomerular proteinuria, focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS), and progression to kidney failure occur. Although the kidneys are the first organs affected, and play a key role in morbidity and mortality, extrarenal multiorgan involvement can occur in patients with cystinosis, which is seen not only in adults but in early ages in untreated patients, patients with insufficient treatment, and in those that don't comply with treatment. The treatment of cystinosis consists of supportive treatment for Fanconi syndrome, and specific lifelong cystine-depleting therapy using oral cysteamine. There is strong evidence that as early as possible, initiation and ongoing appropriate therapy with cysteamine are essential for delaying the progression to kidney failure, end-organ damage, and extrarenal involvement. Purpose: To analyze the radiological features of the lacrimal gland (LG) and extraocular muscle (EOM) in thyroid eye disease (TED) patients with severe subjective dry eye disease (DED) using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) measurements. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, mechanical ocular exposure, dry eye assessment and MRI data were collected. Patients were classified into non-severe subjective DED group with ocular surface disease index (OSDI) < 33 and severe subjective DED group with OSDI ≥ 33. Linear regression model was applied for comparing the OSDI < 33 and OSDI ≥ 33 group in TED patients. The predictive performance of MRI parameters and models was assessed by receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) analysis. Results: Consecutive 88 TED patients (176 eyes) were included in this study. In the OSDI < 33 group, 52 TED patients (104 eyes) with a mean clinical activity score (CAS) of 0.63 ± 0.75. In the OSDI ≥ 33 group, there are 36 TED patients (72 eyes), with a mean CAS of 1.50 ± 1.54. The age and sex of the patients were matched between the two groups. The OSDI ≥ 33 group had shorter tear break-up time, larger levator palpebrae superioris / superior rectus (LPS/SR), inferior rectus and lateral rectus, smaller LG, more inflammatory LPS/SR and inferior rectus than OSDI < 33 DED group (P < 0.05). In the linear regression analysis, compare to the OSDI < 33 DED group, the OSDI ≥ 33 group had larger medial rectus cross-sectional area (β = 0.06, 95%CI: (0.02, 0.10), P = 0.008), larger inferior rectus cross-sectional area (β = 0.06, 95%CI: (0.00, 0.12), P = 0.048), smaller LG cross-sectional area (β = -0.14, 95%CI: (-0.25, -0.04), P = 0.008). In the ROC analysis, the area under curve of medial rectus, inferior rectus, LG, and combined model are 0.625, 0.640, 0.661 and 0.716, respectively. Conclusion: Multiparametric MRI parameters of the LG and EOM in TED patients with severe subjective DED were significantly altered. Novel models combining the cross-sectional area of LG, medial rectus and inferior rectus showed good predictive performance in TED patients with severe subjective DED. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
