This essay compares Judith Butler's and Erving Goffman's theoretical contributions to performance and performativity with the goal of bridging their approaches, usually seen as mutually incompatible. Using eighteenth-century women's politeness as a case study, it argues that politeness is a practice that is essentially both performed and performative; analysing it as such offers us valuable new information on eighteenth-century subjectivities. The essay suggests that combining performance and performativity can be used to reconceptualize agency and find a way out of the Butlerian impasse of the impossibility of resistance. Performance thus has the potential to confound the paralyzing non-agency of performativity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Man's well-being depended on having a companion who could come to his aid in time of need and unite with him in doing God's will in the world. God told the woman that the result of her sin was that her desire would be to conquer her husband, but he would continue to rule over her, resulting in conflict, anger, and bitter estrangement.

The article discusses African American modeling agencies and charm schools in the U.S. following World War II. The negative depiction of African American women before the war is examined. The influence of charm school owners Ophelia DeVore and Barbara Watson is talked about. The author argues that the charm schools reinforced middle class expectations of social behavior and white aesthetic beauty standards. DeVore's opinions concerning racist characterizations of African Americans are mentioned. Race discrimination within the U.S. fashion and advertising industry is also addressed.

Research on women who have achieved eminence in a variety of domains illustrates that no one path results in success. Some eminent women marry and have children while others do not. Some work and live with energy and passion and speed; others move more calmly through the world and achieve at similar or even higher levels. The current chapter draws from two decades of research pertaining to the lives of women who have successfully overcome challenges and obstacles that have been found to interrupt or derail high achievement in women. In this chapter, a new theory of female talent development is offered and other issues are explored, including the spheres in which women express their talents, factors that may promote or inhibit the development of gifts, and gender differences in experiences that contribute to the unique nature of female achievement. The goal of this project is to explore why, given United States women's historical struggle to gain legal and social acceptance of nontraditional naming forms, the overwhelming majority of women continue to follow tradition and adopt their husbands' names upon marriage. To begin to explain this phenomenon, this study focused on Catholic women, who changed their names between 1940 and 1998. This article illustrates the role tradition plays in participants' worldview and how tradition influences their behavior and attitudes toward naming practices. The naming behaviors and attitudes of the women in this study are then analyzed within a larger sociocultural and political context. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

El artículo discute el tema de la libre expresión sexual de las mujeres en el libro "Pisagua," del escritor boliviano Alcides Arguedas. Aunque el libro se trata de esta manifestación sexual, también revela cómo esta actitud no cambia la estructura tradicional social de la mujer y forma una caída femenina. Además, el artículo habla del tema de la necesidad de fabricar una solidaridad masculina capaz de encarar la modernidad. Arguedas y otros intelectuales de su época apoyaron este asunto.

The article investigates the culturally inappropriate behaviour of young women in all-female coffee shops in Saudi Arabia. These women use shops to escape from examination and take part in corrupt behavior such as smoking, dressing immodestly and laughing out loud. Sociologist Amal Al-Ju'eid attributed this to the family disintegration in Saudi Arabia. The sociologists suggest the inclusion of increased policing by the Commission for Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice's female staff.

The article cites the contribution of Ella Flagg Young, superintendent of schools in Chicago, Illinois, to the education of girls in the city. Young emphasized the need to impart social grace to school girls. She emphasized that learning how to be socially correct and graceful is as distinctly an education accomplishment as to learning how to solve mathematical problems. In this context, Young has implemented a social hour for girls in the schools.

The article reports on the appointment of the teacher, Shizuko Takeda, to study modern methods of women's education by the Empress of the Japanese Imperial Household Department in Japan. Takeda was the former teacher of the Empress, and she will be leaving for Europe and U.S. for advanced education to be applied for the girls in Japan. She will be spending one year in the U.S. and one year in Europe as part of her advanced educational training.

The article relates the experiences of the authors. One author recalls that when she told a story, which did not reflect upon woman's chastity, at the club dinner table, the men listening to the narration were laughing at her. The other author, on the other hand, refers his experience when he attended his second football game in a lighted field and asserted how the lights affected his eyes the next day.
