Abstract Blood flow is translated into biochemical inflammatory or anti-inflammatory signals based onshear stress type, by means of sensitive endothelial receptors. Recognition of the phenomenon is of paramount importance for enhanced insights into the pathophysiological processes of vascular remodeling. The endothelial glycocalyx is a pericellular matrix, identified in both arteries and veins, acting collectively as a sensor responsive to blood flow changes. Venous and lymphatic physiology is interconnected; however, to our knowledge, a lymphatic glycocalyx structure has never been identified in humans. The objective of this investigation is to identify glycocalyx structures from ex vivo lymphatic human samples. Lower limb vein and lymphatic vessels were harvested. The samples were analyzed by transmission electron microscopy. The specimens were also examined by immunohistochemistry. Transmission electron microscopy identified a glycocalyx structure in human venous and lymphatic samples. Immunohistochemistry for podoplanin, glypican-1, mucin-2, agrin and brevican characterized lymphatic and venous glycocalyx-like structures. To our knowledge, the present work reports the first identification of a glycocalyx-like structure in human lymphatic tissue. The vasculoprotective action of the glycocalyx could become an investigational target in the lymphatic system as well, with clinical implications for the many patients affected by lymphatic disorders.

Introduction Choroid plexus (CP) is a physiological barrier, producing cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), neurotrophic, and inflammatory factors. It’s also involved in the neuro-immune axis, facilitating the interplay between central and peripheral inflammation, allowing trafficking of immune cells. Coherently, CP enlargement has been found in psychiatric diseases characterized by inflammatory signature. Although CP volume correlates with central microglia activation in major depressive disorder (MDD), it’s never been directly associated with peripheral markers in mood disorders. Objectives Examine CP volume in mood disorders and healthy controls (HC) in relation to clinical features and peripheral inflammatory markers. Methods CP volume was extracted with FreeSurfer in 72 HC and 152 age- and sex-matched depressed patients: 79 BD and 73 MDD. Plasma analytes in patients were collected through immunoassay technology (Bioplex). We tested for the effect of age by group on CP volume. Then we focused on the interaction between illness duration and diagnosis in predicting CP volume. After testing the effect of specific analytes by diagnosis, we calculated moderated moderation models (SPSS, PROCESS) setting each analyte as independent variable, CP volume as predicted variable and illness duration and diagnosis as moderators. We get the effects’ significance with the likelihood ratio statistic, always controlling for age, sex, and intracranial volume. Results Patients were comparable in illness duration and severity. To relate the alterations occurring in neurodegenerations with Ca2+ homeostasis dysregulation, we analyzed the functional properties of the Ca2+-dependent calpain/calpastatin system in neuronal cells of transgenic mice overexpressing human mutated -G93A(+) SOD1. Motor cortex and spinal cord lower segments from transgenic mice show a very large increase in free Ca2+ ions and evident calpain activation, identified onthe basis of its consumption and substrates digestion. Changes in calpastatin intracellular localization and calpain conformation state further support these observations. Moreover, calpastatin is significantly expressed, counteracting its calpain-mediated degradation. Thus, the calpain /calpastatin system may be a target for new therapeutic approaches to neurodegenerative diseases.

Reportamos el caso de un espiroadenoma ecrino en una paciente de 90 años de edad, que empezó un año antes de la consulta con una lesión en el párpado. Se trata de un tumor benigno de la glándulas sudoríparas que es raro en el párpado. Al principio pensamos en otro tumor, como el carcinoma sebáceo, por su rápido crecimiento. La posibilidad de un tumor de glándulas sudoríparas debiera considerarse en el diagnóstico de tumores palpebrales.We report a case of an eccrine spiradenoma in a 90 years old woman, who began a year before with the lesion on the eyelid. It is a begin sweat gland tumor, that is rare on the eyelid. At the beginning we thougth in an other tumor, like sebaceous carcinoma for its quick growth. The possibility of sweat gland tumor should be kept in mind in the diagnosis of eyelid tumours.

El objetivo de esta publicación es mostrar un caso de mastocitoma solitario en la vejez, debido a la rareza de su aparición en tal etapa. Sus diagnósticos diferenciales y la involución total de la lesión con el uso de apósitos hidrocoloides, son comentados.We present a case of a solitary mastocytoma in a man 86 years old who developped the lesion on the inferior lip. The interest of the case is the rarity of the presentation in an adult, which presents others differential diagnostics, and the success of the treatment with hidrocolloid dressings.
