1. Organizing Activities for Students of Chemistry Pedagogy to Research According to the CDIO Approach in Vietnam

Abstract

A comprehensive educational framework is provided by the Conceive-Design-Implement-Operate (CDIO) which is particularly relevant to engineering and applied sciences. This paper investigates the application of the CDIO approach in the field of chemistry pedagogy in Vietnam focusing on its adaptability to the current educational demands and its potential to enhance the competency of future teachers. The CDIO approach develops training curricula and outputstandards based on input from teachers,students, alumni and recruitment firms. This study uses the CDIO approach extensively with professional knowledge, social awareness and creative tendencies. The study involved a survey of 240 chemistry teachers and 242 students from various universities across Vietnam. Data were collected through online surveys using Google Forms and processed using SPSS software for statistical analysis. The research analyzed the alignment of practical teaching activities with CDIO standards and developed a framework for experimental practice competency. Findings indicated a robust implementation of the CDIO approach in chemistry pedagogy. In laboratory safety, experimental planning, execution and competence were high. The study shows that the CDIO strategy enhances professional competence and practical abilities in Vietnamese chemistry pedagogy students. It promotes collaboration and personal growth to meet changing educational needs. The CDIO approach could transform chemistry pedagogy in Vietnam suggesting science education reforms and capacity building.

2. The Impact of the Curriculum on Pre-Service Physics Teachers' Nature of Science Conceptions

Abstract

To be able to form and develop competencies with regard to the nature of science (NOS) for students, the teachers must have appropriate conceptions about NOS. Therefore, this study explored levels of conceptions about the nature of science of future physics teachers who have experienced two different physics teachers-education curricula using the survey research methodology. The findings indicated that both curricula have developed positive conceptions of the nature of science for pre-service physics teachers, especially for elements related to creativity in science, subjectivity in science (theory-ladenness), and the tentative nature of scientific knowledge. However, besides good conceptions, naive views could be found in some other elements, such as the purpose of the experiment and the validity of observationally based theories and discipline. Finally, students did not express enough conceptions of the function of scientific theories and the logic of testing them. When differences among generations were investigated, the new generation, who has been experiencing a new curriculum established in 2019, was found to have better conceptions when it came to the scientific definition of science, laws, and theories, as well as scientific methods. However, they hold more inadequate conceptions of the elements of the social and cultural embeddedness of scientific knowledge. These differences were suggested and discussed to be mainly stemmed from the appearance of a course called "Introduction to Natural Science and Technology" in the new curriculum. This paper discusses the implications of this study for investigating NOS conceptions and developing physics teachers-education curricula.

Abstract

(abridged) Together with gravity, turbulence, and stellar feedback, magnetic fields (B-fields) are thought to play a critical role in the evolution of molecular clouds and star formation processes. We aim to map the morphology and measure the strength of B-fields of the nearby molecular cloud, rho Ophiuchus-A ($\rho$ Oph-A), and then to understand the role of B-fields in regulating star formation and shaping the cloud. We have analyzed the far-infrared (FIR) polarization of thermal dust emission observed by SOFIA/HAWC$+$ at 89 and 154 $\mu$m toward the densest part of $\rho$ Oph-A, which is irradiated by the nearby B3/4 star, Oph-S1. The cloud exhibits well-ordered B-fields with magnetic orientations mainly perpendicular to the ridge of the cloud toward the densest region and B-field strengths are in the range of 0.2-2.5 mG, using the Davis-Chandrasekhar-Fermi method. The B-fields are strongest at the densest part of the cloud, which is associated with the starless core SM1, and decreases toward the outskirts of the cloud. By calculating the map of the mass-to-flux ratio, Alfv\'en Mach number, and plasma $\beta$ parameter in $\rho$ Oph-A, we find that the cloud is predominantly magnetically sub-critical, sub-Alfv\'enic, which implies that the cloud is supported by strong B-fields that dominate over gravity, turbulence, and thermal gas energy. Measured B-field strengths at two densest subregions using other methods that account for the compressible mode are relatively lower than that measured with the DCF method but do not significantly change our conclusions on the roles of B-fields relative to gravity and turbulence on star formation. A virial analysis suggests that the cloud is gravitationally unbound. 7. Scaffolding Student Engagement with Written Corrective Feedback: Transforming Feedback Sessions into Learning Affordances

Abstract

This study proposed a three-step writing conference in which foreign/second language (L2) students, under the guidance of their writing instructor, first fastened their attentional focus on a form-related error, analysed a collection of standard L2 samples to deduce the underlying knowledge, and then planned for their error correction as well as future learning of this knowledge. The ultimate goal of this formative assessment practice was to scaffold student engagement with written corrective feedback (WCF). Using a between-group experiment design, the present study compared the effects on the success rate of error correction and L2 uptake of the above writing conference (n = 14) against those brought about by a typical Teacher-Student (n = 12) and a typical Student-Student one (n = 12). Research participants were 38 intermediate learners of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) recruited from three intact classes at a language-learning center in Vietnam. The suggested writing conference was indeed found to yield better error correction and L2 uptake than the other counterparts. A closer look at the students' mental engagement with WCF revealed that such engagement was moderately correlated with their L2 uptake. These findings altogether suggest that student engagement with WCF should not be taken for granted or, in other words, this engagement should be contingently supported by the writing instructor in order to foster learning from WCF.

8. Coherent Risk Measure on $L^0$: NA Condition, Pricing and Dual Representation

Abstract

The NA condition is one of the pillars supporting the classical theory of financial mathematics. We revisit this condition for financial market models where a dynamic risk-measure defined on $L^0$ is fixed to characterize the family of acceptable wealths that play the role of non negative financial positions. We provide in this setting a new version of the fundamental theorem of asset pricing and we deduce a dual characterization of the super-hedging prices (called risk-hedging prices) of a European option. Moreover, we show that the set of all risk-hedging prices is closed under NA. At last, we provide a dual representation of the risk-measure on $L^0$ under some conditions.

Abstract

How to compute (super) hedging costs in rather general fi- nancial market models with transaction costs in discrete-time ? Despite the huge literature on this topic, most of results are characterizations of the super-hedging prices while it remains difficult to deduce numerical procedure to estimate them. We establish here a dynamic programming principle and we prove that it is possible to implement it under some conditions on the conditional supports of the price and volume processes for a large class of market models including convex costs such as order books but also non convex costs, e.g. fixed cost models.

Abstract

We propose and demonstrate a modulation transfer protocol to increase the detection sensitivity of a Rydberg RF receiver to fields out of resonance from the transition between Rydberg levels. This protocol is based on a phase modulation of the control field used to create the Electromagnetically Induced Transparency (EIT) signal. The nonlinear wave-mixing of the multi-component coupling laser and the probe laser transfers the modulation to the probe laser, which is used for RF-field detection. The measurements compare well with semi-classical simulations of atom-light interaction and show an improvement in the RF bandwidth of the sensor and an improved sensitivity of the response to weak fields.
