Abstract Tor putitora is an endangered cyprinid fish constrained to cold water and is also considered an indicator of a healthy aquatic ecosystem. The present study aimed to examine the haplotypic diversity, genetic variation and population structure of T. putitora isolates using COI and Cyt b gene sequences submitted in GenBank. Bioinformatic analysis was carried out using 106 COI and 183 Cyt b gene sequences as well as 2 reference genome sequences. Analysis of COI and Cyt b gene reveals 18 and 85 haplotypes respectively. Mutation was observed at 44 different sites in COI and 173 in Cyt b gene sequences. Haplotype 4 and haplotype 37 were considered ancestral in COI and Cyt b respectively. Analysis of COI gene reveals moderate haplotype diversity (0.630) and low Nucleotide diversity (0.00662) whereas Cyt b has higher haplotype diversity (0.804) and low Nucleotide diversity (0.00582). Moreover, the neutrality test such as Tajima’s D, and Fu’s Fs showed negative values in both gene sequences, suggesting population expansion attributed to habitat destruction. So, comprehending the genetic variability within and among the T. putitora population is crucial for conserving and managing this species. Integration of genetic diversity into conservation planning can enhance the effectiveness of breeding programs and habitat restoration efforts.

Aims and method We conducted a cross-sectional survey to examine how undergraduate psychiatry is taught and assessed across medical schools in the UK that have at least one cohort of graduated students. Results In total, 27 medical schools completed the survey. Curriculum coverage of common mental disorders, assessment skills and mental health law was broadly consistent, although exposure to psychiatric subspecialties varied. Significant variation existed regarding the duration of psychiatry placements and availability of enrichment activities. Small-group teaching, lectures and e-learning were the most frequent teaching modalities and various professionals and lived experience educators (patient and/or carers) contributed to teaching. Objective structured clinical examinations and multiple-choice questions dominated assessments. Clinical implications Medical schools should consider increasing students’ exposure to different psychiatric subspecialties and integrating physical and mental health training to address comorbidity and promote holistic care. Future research should explore whether specific undergraduate experiences promote greater career interest and skills in psychiatry.

Abstract Background Equitable access to healthcare for rural, tribal, and underprivileged people has been an emerging area of interest for researchers, academicians, and policymakers worldwide. Improving equitable access to healthcare requires innovative interventions. This calls for clarifying which operational model of a service innovation needs to be strengthened to achieve transformative change and bring sustainability to public health interventions. The current study aimed to identify the components of an operational model of mobile medical units (MMUs) as an innovative intervention to provide equitable access to healthcare. Methods The study empirically examined the impact of scalability, affordability, replicability (SAR), and immunization performance on the sustainability of MMUs to develop a framework for primary healthcare in the future. Data were collected via a survey answered by 207 healthcare professionals from six states in India. Partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) was conducted to empirically determine the interrelationships among various constructs. Results The standardized path coefficients revealed that three factors (SAR) significantly influenced immunization performance as independent variables. Comparing the three hypothesized relationships demonstrates that replicability has the most substantial impact, followed by scalability and affordability. Immunization performance was found to have a significant direct effect on sustainability. For evaluating sustainability, MMUs constitute an essential component and an enabler of a sustainable healthcare system and universal health coverage. Conclusion This study equips policymakers and public health professionals with the critical components of the MMU operational model leading toward sustainability. The research framework provides reliable grounds for examining the impact of scalability, affordability, and replicability on immunization coverage as the primary public healthcare outcome.

Abstract The genetic factors of stroke in South Asians are largely unexplored. Exome-wide sequencing and association analysis (ExWAS) in 75 K Pakistanis identified NM_000435.3(NOTCH3):c.3691 C > T, encoding the missense amino acid substitution p.Arg1231Cys, enriched in South Asians (alternate allele frequency = 0.58% compared to 0.019% in Western Europeans), and associated with subcortical hemorrhagic stroke [odds ratio (OR) = 3.39, 95% confidence interval (CI) = [2.26, 5.10], p = 3.87 × 10−9), and all strokes (OR [CI] = 2.30 [1.77, 3.01], p = 7.79 × 10−10). NOTCH3 p.Arg231Cys was strongly associated with white matter hyperintensity on MRI in United Kingdom Biobank (UKB) participants (effect [95% CI] in SD units = 1.1 [0.61, 1.5], p = 3.0 × 10−6). The variant is attributable for approximately 2.0% of hemorrhagic strokes and 1.1% of all strokes in South Asians. These findings highlight the value of diversity in genetic studies and have major implications for genomic medicine and therapeutic development in South Asian populations.

IntroductionThe extensive network of community health workers in rural Bangladesh has the potential to deliver maternal and child nutrition services, while promoting linkages with healthcare facilities. A strategy for strengthening community-based nutrition services was developed and tested.MethodsThe three-phased strategy included review of existing community-based systems, co-designing service package with multi-sector government representatives, and testing implementation feasibility. Integrated health and nutrition service delivery, supportive supervision, and increased accountability of local government were core components of the service package being implemented in selected geographies since March 2023. The assessment followed a mixed-method design with household survey of 1,166 pregnant women, mothers of children under-6 months and 6–23 months, and observations of 965 service delivery points along with qualitative study.ResultsA higher proportion of children received growth monitoring and promotion (GMP) services through expanded program on immunization (EPI) sessions, with better compliance to service delivery protocol in intervention areas compared with controls. Maternal nutrition services of gestational weight gain monitoring and distribution of supplements were better available in intervention areas. However, minimum dietary diversity among pregnant women (69% intervention, 72% control), early initiation of breastfeeding (55% intervention, 51% control), and complementary feeding practices were comparable in intervention and control areas. Nutrition services were successfully integrated in supervision which earlier covered EPI and family planning. The local government contributed to strengthening nutrition services but at a small scale.DiscussionThere is potential to scale-up GMP services through EPI and merging antenatal clinics with GMP and EPI such that all maternal and childcare services are available at the same place and same time. A coordinated investment and oversight from multiple national government departments is needed. At district and sub-district levels, scale-up requires joint annual planning of nutrition and EPI services, strengthened management of nutrition services, bridging health worker vacancies, introducing volunteers in sites with high EPI case load, capacity building, and supportive supervision. Replacement of multiple health and nutrition records with a single mother and child health and nutrition card is also feasible. However, behavior change interventions through home visits and courtyard meetings need more testing before recommending scale-up.

Background: This research was conducted retrospectively, with a focus on description and analysis, spanning from July 2022 to June 2023. Materials and Methods: The research included all pregnant women who were hospitalized to the department and delivered with a gestational age of more than 22 weeks and had severe preeclampsia. Results: The total number of deliveries was 22,180, out of which 63 cases were diagnosed with severe pre-eclampsia. Upon admission, ultrasound assessment of pregnant women revealed intrauterine growth limitation in 17 instances, accounting for 26.98% of the total. Conclusion: Increasing awareness among pregnant women during antenatal care (ANC) about the dangers of pre-eclampsia, providing additional training for healthcare workers, closely and promptly monitoring women at high risk, and managing the condition in a multidisciplinary environment may improve the prognosis for both the mother and the fetus.

A variety of Tacrine-modified Schiff base analogues were developed via solvent free (green) method and structurally elucidated using 1HNMR, FTIR and UV–Vis analysis. High product yield was obtained from the synthesised molecules, which were produced efficiently at room temperature without the need of a solvent. The developed molecules were subsequently assessed for their potential to inhibit acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE). These molecules revealed effective inhibition of AChE and BChE enzymes with IC50 values varying from 0.1 ± 0.02 to 0.3 ± 0.03 μM and 0.065 ± 0.01 to 0.3 ± 0.03 μM respectively. Compared to the standard Tacrine which has IC50 values of 0.35 ± 0.02 μM for AChE and 0.1 ± 0.01 μM for BChE. Notably, compound 3f showed strong inhibition among others for both the enzymes. The structure–activity relationship of derivatives synthesized were verified and established through molecular docking studies. Theoretical ADME studies also predicted excellent drug-likeness for all the synthesized molecules. Antioxidant activities were also assessed because elevated oxidative stress levels are linked with cognitive loss in Alzheimer's disease (AD). These findings suggest that the lead compound is potentially an effective inhibitor for the therapeutic management of AD.

Abstract The purpose of this study is to understand the impact of community mobilization initiatives on citizens’ health-seeking behavior through the lens of COVID-19 vaccination in the state of Madhya Pradesh, India. This study follows a case study approach to understand community mobilization initiatives that led to increased COVID-19 vaccination uptake. The study delineates the process to increase community mobilization to improve the uptake of COVID-19 vaccination. It highlights the key components of community mobilization that were adopted: the involvement of local leadership (at district, block, and village level), support of vaccination/mobilizer team, the role of in-person communication, involvement of influential community heads and social workers, localized strategies and IEC materials, and support from the state administration. Additionally, the key communication themes that played a crucial role in increasing COVID-19 vaccination coverage are identified. The findings of this study will help the policymakers and practitioners in the domains of Health and Medical Humanities, Health Policy and Services, and Social Sciences to clarify the roles of community mobilization activities and initiatives in increasing vaccination coverage. Furthermore, the study provides evidence for the adaptation, integration, and enhancement of these activities based on the four case studies discussed.

Abstract Background Poor intrapartum care in India contributes to high maternal and newborn mortality. India’s Labor Room Quality Improvement Initiative (LaQshya) launched in 2017, aims to improve intrapartum care by minimizing complications, enforcing protocols, and promoting respectful maternity care (RMC). However, limited studies pose a challenge to fully examine its potential to assess quality of maternal and newborn care. This study aims to bridge this knowledge gap and reviews LaQshya’s ability to assess maternal and newborn care quality. Findings will guide modifications for enhancing LaQshya’s effectiveness. Methods We reviewed LaQshya’s ability to assess the quality of care through a two-step approach: a comprehensive descriptive analysis using document reviews to highlight program attributes, enablers, and challenges affecting LaQshya’s quality assessment capability, and a comparison of its measurement parameters with the 352 quality measures outlined in the WHO Standards for Maternal and Newborn Care. Comparing LaQshya with WHO standards offers insights into how its measurement criteria align with global standards for assessing maternity and newborn care quality. Results LaQshya utilizes several proven catalysts to enhance and measure quality- institutional structures, empirical measures, external validation, certification, and performance incentives for high-quality care. The program also embodies contemporary methods like quality circles, rapid improvement cycles, ongoing facility training, and plan-do-check, and act (PDCA) strategies for sustained quality enhancement. Key drivers of LaQshya’s assessment are- leadership, staff mentoring, digital infrastructure and stakeholder engagement from certified facilities. However, governance issues, understaffing, unclear directives, competency gaps, staff reluctance towards new quality improvement approaches inhibit the program, and its capacity to enhance quality of care. LaQshya addresses 76% of WHO’s 352 quality measures for maternal and newborn care but lacks comprehensive assessment of crucial elements: harmful labor practices, mistreatment of mothers or newborns, childbirth support, and effective clinical leadership and supervision. Conclusion LaQshya is a powerful model for evaluating quality of care, surpassing other global assessment tools. To achieve its maximum potential, we suggest strengthening district governance structures and offering tailored training programs for RMC and other new quality processes. Furthermore, expanding its quality measurement metrics to effectively assess provider accountability, patient outcomes, rights, staff supervision, and health facility leadership will increase its ability to assess quality improvements.

Data has been collected via semi-structured in-depth interviews with 103 healthcare professionals from six states representing India's Tier I, Tier II, and Tier III regions. A thematic analysis was performed to examine emergent salient themes. Results: The study identified and examined scalability, affordability, replicability, and sustainability as the four critical components of the operational model of MMUs. The findings of the study indicated that MMUs with these four components played a vital role in COVID-19 immunization, especially in resource-limited settings. The study found that MMUs are a cost-effective and scalable healthcare delivery model that can be easily replicated in primary healthcare service delivery. Conclusion: The findings underscore the significant role of MMUs in addressing healthcare disparities, particularly in resource-limited settings. The adaptability and cost-effectiveness of MMUs make them an ideal solution for primary healthcare delivery, especially in Tier I, II, and III regions of India. It lays a foundation for future research and policy-making, emphasizing the need for innovative, equitable, and sustainable healthcare delivery models like MMUs to transform and strengthen healthcare systems globally.

Chronic wounds remain an unresolved medical issue because of major social and therapeutic repercussions that require extensive focus. Recent related theragnostic focuses only on wound management and is not effectively promoting chronic wound healing. The rising number of patients with either under-healing or over-healing wounds highlights the ineffectiveness of current wound-healing treatments, and thus, there is an unmet need to focus on alternative treatments. To cover this gap, extracellular vesicles (EVs), for targeted delivery of therapeutics, are emerging as a potential therapy to treat both acute and persistent wounds. To address these issues, we explore the core biology of EVs, associated pharmacology, comprehension of immunogenic outcomes, and potential for long-term wound treatment with improved effectiveness and their nonacceptable side effects. Additionally, the therapeutic role of EVs in severe wound infections through biogenetic moderation, in combination with biomaterials (functional in nature), as well as drug carriers that can offer opportunities for the development of new treatments for this long-term condition, are also carefully elaborated, with an emphasis on biomaterial-based drug delivery systems. It is observed that exploring difficulties and potential outcomes of clinical translation of EV-based therapeutics for wound management has the potential to be adopted as a future therapy.

Mental health is indispensable for effective daily functioning and stress management. Facial expressions may provide vital clues about the mental state of a person as they are universally consistent across cultures. This study intends to detect the emotional variances through facial micro-expressions using facial action units (AUs) to identify probable mental health issues. In addition, convolutional neural networks (CNN) were used to detect and classify the micro-expressions. Further, combinations of AUs were identified for the segmentation of micro-expressions classes using K-means square. Two benchmarked datasets CASME II and SAMM were employed for the training and evaluation of the model. The model achieved an accuracy of 95.62% on CASME II and 93.21% on the SAMM dataset, respectively. Subsequently, a case analysis was done to identify depressive patients using the proposed framework and it attained an accuracy of 92.99%. This experiment revealed the fact that emotions like disgust, sadness, anger, and surprise are the prominent emotions experienced by depressive patients during communication. The findings suggest that leveraging facial action units for micro-expression detection offers a promising approach to mental health diagnostics.

This study investigates the frequency of a clinically reported variant in PMS2, NM_000535.7:c.2523G>A p.(W841∗), from next-generation sequencing studies in 2 racially diverse cohorts. We identified clinical reports of the PMS2 c.2523G>A p.(W841∗) variant in the National Precision Oncology Program’s somatic testing database (n = 25,168). We determined frequency of the variant in germline exome sequencing from the Penn Medicine BioBank (n = 44,256) and in gnomAD. The PMS2 c.2523G>A p.(W841∗) was identified as a homozygous variant on tumor testing in an adult patient of self-identified Black race/ethnicity with no evidence of constitutional mismatch repair deficiency. The variant was clinically reported on 35 total tumor and liquid biopsy tests (0.1%), and all individuals with the variant were of self-identified Black race/ethnicity (0.6% of n = 5787). In individuals of African genetic ancestry (AFR), the variant's germline frequency was reported to be 0.2% and 1.3% in the Penn Medicine BioBank (PMBB) and gnomAD, respectively. The variant cannot be found in any individuals of European genetic ancestry (EUR) from either of the databases. The variant is found in a region of PMS2 with 100% homology to the PMS2CL pseudogene. PMS2 c.2523G>A p.(W841∗), when identified, is typically an African-ancestry-specific PMS2CL pseudogene variant, which should be recognized to prevent misdiagnosis of Lynch syndrome in Blacks.

The conjugated polydiacetylene (PDA) polymers have garnered significant attention due to their potential use as a thermochromic indicator. The color transition at low-temperature ranges makes them suitable for monitoring frozen foods and medicinal products. This study presents the synthesis and characterization of a novel thermochromic molecule that experiences a low-temperature irreversible color transition. The synthesis of modified monomeric dye involves an esterification (Steglich) reaction between 10,12-Pentacosadiynoic acid (PCDA) and phenol. The formation of the ester moiety in the dye derivative was confirmed using FTIR and NMR spectroscopy. The composite film was fabricated by mixing modified monomer dye with the polymer polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), which, upon UV light exposure, undergoes topochemical polymerization, forming PDA via 1,4-addition reaction between the respective diacetylene monomeric units. Thermochromic studies of this dye showed a low-temperature irreversible color transition above 15 °C, contrasting the reversible color transition of pristine dye above 45 °C and characterized with absorption and Raman spectroscopy. Consequently, the results may uncover the potential applications of the conjugated PDA-based irreversible thermochromic dye as a warning indicator for frozen packaged food and pharmaceutical items.

Social media is a powerful communication tool and a reflection of our digital environment. Social media acted as an augmenter and influencer during and after COVID-19. Many of the people sharing social media posts were not actually aware of their mental health status. This situation warrants to automate the detection of mental disorders. This paper presents a methodology for the detection of mental disorders using micro facial expressions. Micro-expressions are momentary, involuntary facial expressions that can be indicative of deeper feelings and mental states. Nevertheless, manually detecting and interpreting micro-expressions can be rather challenging. A deep learning HybridMicroNet model, based on convolution neural networks, is proposed for emotion recognition from micro-expressions. Further, a case study for the detection of mental health has been undertaken. The findings demonstrated that the proposed model achieved a high accuracy when attempting to diagnose mental health disorders based on micro-expressions. The attained accuracy on the CASME dataset was 99.08%, whereas the accuracy that was achieved on SAMM dataset was 97.62%. Based on these findings, deep learning may prove to be an effective method for diagnosing mental health conditions by analyzing micro-expressions.

Magnetic hyperthermia cancer therapy has emerged as a promising approach for targeted and localized treatment of cancer. This innovative technique utilizes magnetic nanoparticles to generate localized heat within tumor cells, leading to their selective destruction. This study explores the hyperthermic potential of Lanthanum Strontium Manganite (LSMO), which are rare earth metal-based magnetic nanoparticles, for their application in magnetic hyperthermia cancer therapy. A modified citrate sol-gel technique was utilized to create LSMO (La0·7Sr0·3MnO3) nanoparticles, which were then modified by coating with silica. Comprehensive physical characterization of the nanoparticles was performed, and their hyperthermic potential was evaluated in vitro. The biocompatibility and selective cytotoxicity of LSMO nanoparticles were investigated, and the results demonstrated promising outcomes. With its controlled and localized heat generation and enhanced biocompatibility, LSMO offers an encouraging avenue for advancing targeted and effective cancer treatments. Future research in this field may pave the way for transformative improvements in cancer therapy outcomes.

Introduction: The nutcracker phenomenon (NCP) (or the left renal vein [LRV] entrapment) focuses on the constriction of the LRV. It occurs commonly between the abdominal aorta (AA) and the superior mesenteric artery. The resulting clinical manifestation of this phenomenon is known as the nutcracker syndrome (NCS). Three types of this phenomenon have been reported: anterior, posterior, and mixed. NCP is a rare finding as reported by various authors. The aim of this study is to know the prevalence of NCP in the population of Uttarakhand, India. Methodology: The study was conducted to understand the tributaries of the renal veins and any variations in their pattern via 160-slice computed tomography (CT) angiography. CT angiographies were retrospectively studied to study the renal vasculature. A total of 14 renal veins which included four accessory renal veins (aRVs) (one left and three right) were analyzed from cadaveric dissection and 44 CT films were included (36 males and eight females) with 98 renal veins which included 10 aRVs (three left and seven right). Results: The current study was done on 49 cases (five cadavers and 44 CT angiography), in which a 10.2% prevalence of NCP was recorded. All were variants of mixed types of NCP. Conclusion: Although the NCP and NCS are rare occurrences, it has been determined that it was possibly underdiagnosed due to a lack of the proper advanced imaging and diagnostic modalities. Hence, it led to the undertreatment of the same. With recent development in diagnostic modalities such as multidetector CT, CT angiography, magnetic resonance angiography, etc., there has been a rise in diagnosis of NCP and NCS, thus resulting in increased prevalence.

Abstract Objective: To summarise available evidence on the nutritional status of school-age children and adolescents (5–19 years) from seven global regions and on interventions implemented to improve malnutrition in this population. Setting: Global. Design: Findings were compiled from seven scoping literature reviews, including data from low- and middle-income countries within the following UNICEF-defined global regions: East Asia and Pacific; Europe and Central Asia; South Asia; West and Central Africa; Eastern and Southern Africa; Middle East and North Africa and Latin America and the Caribbean. Results: A double burden of malnutrition was evident across the world regions reviewed: stunting, thinness, anaemia and other micronutrient deficiencies persisted, alongside rising overweight and obesity prevalence. Transitions towards diets increasingly high in energy-dense, processed and micronutrient-poor foods were observed. Evidence from intervention studies was limited, but suggested that providing multiple micronutrient-fortified foods or beverages at school may effectively target micronutrient deficiencies and facilitate weight gain in undernourished populations. Interventions to prevent or manage overweight and obesity were even more limited. There was minimal evidence of using novel technological approaches to engage school-age children and adolescents, or of involving them in designing interventions. Conclusion: The limited data available on nutrition of school-age children and adolescents are neither standardised nor comparable. Consensus on methods for assessing nutritional status and its determinants for this age group is urgently needed to set targets and monitor progress. Additionally, strategies are required to ensure that nutritious, safe and sustainable diets are available, affordable and appealing.

The research experiment was conducted during the June to August of 2018 under green-house condition at the Experimental farm, Department of Plant Pathology, Dr YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni Solan, Himachal Pradesh, India. Mass culture of the pathogenic fungus, Fusarium oxysporum prepared on the corn sand meal medium were inoculated into the sterilized soil (7 cm diameter) in controlled conditions. Sterilized distilled water was sprinkled onto the inoculated soil followed by covering them pots with polythene sheet for about one week for build-up of inoculum. Different moisture and temperature regimes were tested for disease development. Results obtained from the experiments revealed that maximum disease incidence was observed at a soil moisture level of 45% however, no disease was observed at 15% soil moisture regime. Disease development was observed at all the temperature regimes tested except at 15oC where no disease progression was observed even after 21 days of inoculation. Maximum disease incidence (%) was recorded at 25oC temperature. Thus, the present studies indicated that extreme temperature and moisture levels were not found to be favourable for the development of the Fusarium wilt disease in cucumber as disease was observed at optimum environmental conditions of the Fusarium wilt disease in cucumber as disease was observed at optimum environmental conditions.

The Marburg virus (MV), identified in 1967, has caused deadly outbreaks worldwide, the mortality rate of Marburg virus disease (MVD) varies depending on the outbreak and virus strain, but the average case fatality rate is around 50%. However, case fatality rates have varied from 24 to 88% in past outbreaks depending on virus strain and case management. Designated a priority pathogen by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), MV induces hemorrhagic fever, organ failure, and coagulation issues in both humans and non-human primates. This review presents an extensive exploration of MVD outbreak evolution, virus structure, and genome, as well as the sources and transmission routes of MV, including human-to-human spread and involvement of natural hosts such as the Egyptian fruit bat (Rousettus aegyptiacus) and other Chiroptera species. The disease progression involves early viral replication impacting immune cells like monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells, followed by damage to the spleen, liver, and secondary lymphoid organs. Subsequent spread occurs to hepatocytes, endothelial cells, fibroblasts, and epithelial cells. MV can evade host immune response by inhibiting interferon type I (IFN-1) synthesis. This comprehensive investigation aims to enhance understanding of pathophysiology, cellular tropism, and injury sites in the host, aiding insights into MVD causes. Clinical data and treatments are discussed, albeit current methods to halt MVD outbreaks remain elusive. By elucidating MV infection’s history and mechanisms, this review seeks to advance MV disease treatment, drug development, and vaccine creation. The World Health Organization (WHO) considers MV a high-concern filovirus causing severe and fatal hemorrhagic fever, with a death rate ranging from 24 to 88%. The virus often spreads through contact with infected individuals, originating from animals. Visitors to bat habitats like caves or mines face higher risk. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are natural products of mitochondrial oxidative metabolism and oxidative protein folding. ROS levels must be well controlled, since elevated ROS has been shown to have deleterious effects on osteoblasts. Moreover, excessive ROS is thought to underlie many of the skeletal phenotypes associated with aging and sex steroid deficiency in mice and humans. The mechanisms by which osteoblasts regulate ROS and how ROS inhibits osteoblasts are not well understood. Here, we demonstrate that de novo glutathione (GSH) biosynthesis is essential in neutralizing ROS and establish a proosteogenic reduction and oxidation reaction (REDOX) environment. Using a multifaceted approach, we demonstrate that reducing GSH biosynthesis led to acute degradation of RUNX2, impaired osteoblast differentiation, and reduced bone formation. Conversely, reducing ROS using catalase enhanced RUNX2 stability and promoted osteoblast differentiation and bone formation when GSH biosynthesis was limited. Highlighting the therapeutic implications of these findings, in utero antioxidant therapy stabilized RUNX2 and improved bone development in the Runx2+/– haplo-insufficient mouse model of human cleidocranial dysplasia. Thus, our data establish RUNX2 as a molecular sensor of the osteoblast REDOX environment and mechanistically clarify how ROS negatively impacts osteoblast differentiation and bone formation.

Background: Cortical branches of the anterior cerebral artery (ACA) supply the medial surface and superior border of the cerebral hemisphere. Names of distinct cortical branches are according to the regions of the brain supplied by that particular branch. There can be variations in the number, origin, and distribution of these branches. There can also be variations of the ACA like azygous, bi hemispheric, median, aplasia, and fenestration of the ACA. This study aimed to evaluate the anatomical variation of the ACA and its cortical branches taking into consideration their number and site of origin. Methodology: Retrospective cross-sectional analysis of magnetic resonance angigraphs of 80 subjects (42 males and 38 females) without cerebrovascular diseases who was undertaken in the department of radiodiagnosis from July 2021 to August 2022. Results: The cortical branches were seen either being completely absent or present singly or in duplication. The callosomarginal artery (CmA) branch was found to be most commonly absent (51.25% on the right side), paracentral lobule artery most commonly duplicated (10% of cases on the right). CmA gave origin to the maximum number of cortical branches as compared to other cortical branches. The abnormal origin of anterior cortical branches was found to be more than posterior cortical branches. A few rare cases of variations (1.25% cases each) like azygous, bihemispheric, aplastic, and median ACA. Conclusion: In the present study different variations were observed in the cortical branches of ACA. These variations may also result in higher incidence of ischemic stroke in territory of ACA, involving the superior medial part of the parietal lobe and midline of the frontal lobe. Therefore, this study can be of clinical importance to neurosurgeons during cerebral surgeries.

PurposeA lack of data, intervention studies, policies, and targets for nutrition in school-age children (SAC) and adolescents (5-19 years) is hampering progress towards tackling malnutrition. To stimulate and guide further research, this study generated a list of research priorities.MethodsUsing the Child Health and Nutrition Research Initiative (CHNRI) method, a list of 48 research questions was compiled and questions were scored against defined criteria using a stakeholder survey. Questions covered all forms of malnutrition, including micronutrient deficiencies, thinness, stunting, overweight/obesity, and suboptimal dietary quality. The context was defined as research focused on SAC and adolescents, 5 to 19 years old, in low-and middle-income countries, that could achieve measurable results in reducing the prevalence of malnutrition in the next 10 years.ResultsBetween 85 and 101 stakeholders responded per question. Respondents covered a broad geographical distribution across 38 countries, with the largest proportion focusing on work in East and Southern Africa. Of the research questions ranked in the top ten, half focused on delivery strategies for reaching adolescents and half on improving existing interventions. There were few differences in the ranked order of questions between age groups but those related to in-school children and adolescents had higher expert agreement than those for out-of-school adolescents. The top ranked research question focused on tailoring antenatal and postnatal care for pregnant adolescent girls.ConclusionNutrition programmes should incorporate implementation research to inform delivery of effective interventions to this age group, starting in schools. Academic research on the development and tailoring of existing nutrition interventions is also needed; specifically, on how to package multisectoral programmes and how to better reach vulnerable and underserved sub- groups, including those out of school.

Indian mustard is an economic and highly important industrial oilseed crop. In this study, genetic diversity among 135 Indian mustard germplasm accessions was evaluated using 11 agro-morphological descriptors and 227 SSRs. Morphological characterization of Indian mustard germplasm accessions exhibited a broad range of variation for characters including biological yield (CV = 25.63%), seed yield (CV = 23.23% and 1000-seed weight (CV = 23.14%); whereas traits such as days to maturity (CV = 2.91%) showed lowest degree of variation. Out of 227 SSR markers evaluated, a total of 159 (70.04%) SSRs produced polymorphic products and 68 (29.96%) SSRs resulted into monomorphic amplicons. The polymorphic markers amplified 575 alleles and the number of alleles ranged from 2-7 with 3.61 average number of alleles per locus. SSR markers BRMS-030, Ra2-E11, Ra2-G05, Ni4-G10 and Ol10B11 generated the highest number of alleles (7). SSR marker Ra2-G05 was having the highest allele frequency (0.84), while BRMS-002 was having the lowest major allele frequency (0.33). Polymorphism information content (PIC) values ranged from 0.24-0.61 with an average value of 0.39 per primer pair. Unweighted pair group method with arithmetic mean (UPGMA) cluster analysis based on morphological traits grouped Indian mustard genotypes into three clusters, while two clusters were obtained based on SSR based clustering. Population structure analysis provided a better estimate of genetic diversity and divided all the genotypes into five subpopulations. Genetically diverse accessions identified may be used for hybridization in Indian mustard crop improvement programs in future.

Candida species are considered as common flora of the healthy human mycobiome and occur on skin, mucosal surfaces of gastrointestinal and genitourinary tracks. Pathogenic Candida spp., reported to cause skin, vaginal and oral infections. Extensive use of antifungal agents has increased the drug resistance among pathogenic strains of Candida. To this effect, recently naturally occurring AMPs and synthetically modified peptides, are effectively being used as promising antifungal agents. Short peptides display better permeability to cross the yeast membrane, thus short antifungal peptide were designed using sequences from APD database. Natural peptides are potential source of antifungal agents. Considering above facts, we studied anticandidal potential of synthetic and natural peptides.

The experiment was carried out in Department of Plant Pathology, Dr Yashwant Singh Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni, Solan, Himachal Pradesh, India during cropping season of May to August in year 2018–2019 to study the efficacy of fungal and bacterial bio-control agents in managing the Fusarium wilt of cucumber. Different fungal and bacterial bio-control agents were thus tested under laboratory conditions for their efficacy in inhibiting the mycelial growth of Fusarium oxysporum by using dual culture technique and streak plate method, respectively. Among fungal bio-control agents, Trichoderma harzianum was found most effective with 61.08% inhibition of mycelial growth of F. oxysporum followed by Trichoderma virens with 57.51% mycelial inhibition whereas, among bacterial bio-control agents, maximum mycelial inhibition of 45.69% was observed in Pseudomonas fluorescens. During the cropping season, seed, and soil treatment with effective fungal and bacterial bioagents was carried out under field conditions. Seed treatment and soil application of Trichoderma harzianum was found effective with disease control of 48.25% followed by Trichoderma virens which is proved to be efficacious with 42% disease control against Fusarium wilt of cucumber.

Abstract Our work focuses on the development of simpler and effective production of nanofluidic devices for high-throughput charged single nanoparticle trapping in an aqueous environment. Single nanoparticle confinement using electrostatic trapping has been an effective approach to study the fundamental properties of charged molecules under a controlled aqueous environment. Conventionally, geometry-induced electrostatic trapping devices are fabricated using SiOx-based substrates and comprise nanochannels imbedded with nanoindentations such as nanopockets, nanoslits and nanogrids. These geometry-induced electrostatic trapping devices can only trap negatively charged particles, and therefore, to trap positively charged particles, modification of the device surface is required. However, the surface modification process of a nanofluidic device is cumbersome and time consuming. Therefore, here, we present a novel approach for the development of surface-modified geometry-induced electrostatic trapping devices that reduces the surface modification time from nearly 5 days to just a few hours. We utilized polydimethylsiloxane for the development of a surface-modified geometry-induced electrostatic trapping device. To demonstrate the device efficiency and success of the surface modification procedure, a comparison study between a PDMS-based geometry-induced electrostatic trapping device and the surface-modified polydimethylsiloxane-based device was performed. The device surface was modified with two layers of polyelectrolytes (1: poly(ethyleneimine) and 2: poly(styrenesulfonate)), which led to an overall negatively charged surface. Our experiments revealed the presence of a homogeneous surface charge density inside the fluidic devices and equivalent trapping strengths for the surface-modified and native polydimethylsiloxane-based geometry-induced electrostatic trapping devices. This work paves the way towards broader use of geometry-induced electrostatic trapping devices in the fields of biosensing, disease diagnosis, molecular analysis, fluid quality control and pathogen detection.

During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, numerous factors determined the performance of COVID-19 vaccination coverage. The purpose of this study is to examine the influence of factors such as government stewardship, planning and implementation, and community participation on COVID-19 vaccination coverage. This study applied partial least square structured equation modeling (PLS-SEM) by analyzing 187 responses from the stakeholders involved in vaccination programs in four select states of India. This study empirically validates a framework for improving vaccination coverage by confirming the significant impact of planning and implementation on vaccination coverage followed by government stewardship and community participation. Additionally, this study highlights the individual impact of each factor on vaccination coverage. Based on the findings, strategic recommendations were proposed that can be utilized for formulating policy-level actions to facilitate the vaccination program.

Hypertrophic chondrocytes give rise to osteoblasts during skeletal development; however, the process by which these non-mitotic cells make this transition is not well understood. Prior studies have also suggested that skeletal stem and progenitor cells (SSPCs) localize to the surrounding periosteum and serve as a major source of marrow-associated SSPCs, osteoblasts, osteocytes, and adipocytes during skeletal development. To further understand the cell transition process by which hypertrophic chondrocytes contribute to osteoblasts or other marrow associated cells, we utilized inducible and constitutive hypertrophic chondrocyte lineage tracing and reporter mouse models (Col10a1CreERT2; Rosa26fs-tdTomato and Col10a1Cre; Rosa26fs-tdTomato) in combination with a PDGFRaH2B-GFP transgenic line, single-cell RNA-sequencing, bulk RNA-sequencing, immunofluorescence staining, and cell transplantation assays. Our data demonstrate that hypertrophic chondrocytes undergo a process of dedifferentiation to generate marrow-associated SSPCs that serve as a primary source of osteoblasts during skeletal development. These hypertrophic chondrocyte-derived SSPCs commit to a CXCL12-abundant reticular (CAR) cell phenotype during skeletal development and demonstrate unique abilities to recruit vasculature and promote bone marrow establishment, while also contributing to the adipogenic lineage.

Sonic Hedgehog/GLI3 signaling is critical in regulating digit number, such that Gli3-deficiency results in polydactyly and Shh-deficiency leads to digit number reductions. SHH/GLI3 signaling regulates cell cycle factors controlling mesenchymal cell proliferation, while simultaneously regulating Grem1 to coordinate BMP-induced chondrogenesis. SHH/GLI3 signaling also coordinates the expression of additional genes, however their importance in digit formation remain unknown. Utilizing genetic and molecular approaches, we identified HES1 as a downstream modifier of the SHH/GLI signaling axis capable of inducing preaxial polydactyly (PPD), required for Gli3-deficient PPD, and capable of overcoming digit number constraints of Shh-deficiency. Our data indicate that HES1, a direct SHH/GLI signaling target, induces mesenchymal cell proliferation via suppression of Cdkn1b, while inhibiting chondrogenic genes and the anterior autopod boundary regulator, Pax9. These findings establish HES1 as a critical downstream effector of SHH/GLI3 signaling in the development of PPD.

Electrospinning is one of the best ways to fabricate nanofibers and membranes that are very thin and one of the best ways to fabricate continuous nanomaterials with a wide range of biological, chemical, and physical properties. This review paper concludes with a summary of the electrospinning (applied electric field, needle-to-collector distance, and flow rate), solution (solvent, polymer concentration, viscosity, and solution conductivity), and environmental (humidity and temperature) factors that affect the production of nanofibers and the use of bio-based natural and synthetic electrospun scaffolds in wound healing.

Cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) wilt is an important disease caused by Fusarium oxysporum. The disease is prevalent in most of the countries of the world with yield losses ranging from 40–70%. Characteristic symptoms of the disease include pre and post-emergence damping-off, stunting, chlorosis, necrosis and finally wilting of the older leaves with brown vascular discoloration. Two formae speciales of F. oxysporum have been described in cucumber. The fungus grows profusely on the culture media and produces macroconidia which are tapered with a slight hook, microconidia oval in shape and terminal or intercalary chlamydospores. The disease prevails under the conditions having abundant soil moisture and soil temperature ranging from 24–27oC and no growth of the fungus was observed above 37oC. The pathogen is host-specific to cucumber with muskmelon and watermelon being slightly sensitive. Due to environment and health concerns associated with large scale use of chemicals, the application of resistant germplasm, bio-control agents, and bio formulations is more reliable. This review describes the use of resistant germplasm, bio-control agents, bio-formulations and fungicides to control Fusarium wilt of cucumber.

Accession numbers for whole-genome sequence of Brevibacillus sp. strain GI9 and SKDU10 are CAGD01000001 to CAGD01000061 and LSSO00000000, respectively. Members of the genus Brevibacillus have been demonstrated to produce a variety of bioactive compounds including polyketides, lipopeptides and bacteriocins. Lipopeptides are non-ribosomally synthesized surface-active compounds with antimicrobial, antitumor, and immune-stimulatory activities. They usually exhibit strong antifungal and antibacterial activities and are considered as promising compounds in controlling fungal diseases. In this study, we have characterized two lipopeptides from Brevibacillus sp. strains GI9 and SKDU10. The corresponding lipopeptides were purified by reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography. Mass analysis and characterization by MALDI-TOF-MS (Matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry) analysis revealed production of an iturin-like lipopeptide by strain GI9 and bogorol-like lipopeptide by strain SKDU10. Both lipopeptides exhibited broad spectrum antibacterial activity and inhibited the growth of various fungi. They showed minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values between 90 and 300 μg/ml against indicator strains of bacteria and drug-resistant Candida indicator strains. The lipopeptides did not show phytotoxic effect in seed germination experiments but caused hemolysis. Further, both lipopeptides inhibited the growth of fungi on fruits and vegetables in in vitro experiments, thereby exhibited potential use in biotechnological industry as effective biocontrol agents.

Osteoblast differentiation is sequentially characterized by high rates of proliferation followed by increased protein and matrix synthesis, processes that require substantial amino acid acquisition and production. How osteoblasts obtain or maintain intracellular amino acid production is poorly understood. Here, we identify SLC1A5 as a critical amino acid transporter during bone development. Using a genetic and metabolomic approach, we show SLC1A5 acts cell autonomously to regulate protein synthesis and osteoblast differentiation. SLC1A5 provides both glutamine and asparagine which are essential for osteoblast differentiation. Mechanistically, glutamine and to a lesser extent asparagine support amino acid biosynthesis. Thus, osteoblasts depend on Slc1a5 to provide glutamine and asparagine, which are subsequently used to produce non-essential amino acids and support osteoblast differentiation and bone development.

In Indian society, caste is assigned to us before birth. Caste positions individuals in a social, economic, and political hierarchy. This study explores the meaning of caste discrimination from the perspectives of individuals who experience it in their everyday lives. Many studies have focused on the causes and consequences of caste discrimination and the nature of caste discrimination in different settings. Still, very few have dealt with the "meaning" of caste discrimination and how that meaning-making occurs in the context of present-day academia.This paper adopts an ecological systems approach to explore individuals' interactions with different social settings. Grounded in the epistemological standpoint of social constructionism, the study explored the meaning of caste discrimination through semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions conducted with 22 students who belonged to reserved categories. Constructivist grounded theory was used for analysis to understand the process of meaning formation along with the meaning of caste discrimination. We found that students conceive caste discrimination as the maintenance of the social hierarchy, imposition of rigid identity, and invalidation of caste discriminatory practices. This conception of the meaning was influenced by multiple factors, such as interactions with peers, local cultural ideologies, and treatment received in the academia by teaching and non-teaching staff. The study's findings indicate the need for an integrative indigenous theory of caste discrimination to ensure equitable higher education.

Aim: Near-infrared (NIR)-based photothermal therapy (PTT) has been proposed as a prospective adjuvant to traditional chemotherapy. The present work aims to study the impact of silver-coated magnetic nanoparticles as a PTT agent against multiple cancer cell lines. Materials and Methods: Silver-coated magnetic nanoclusters (Ag-MNCs) were synthesized by a modified method and characterized using X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and ultraviolet–visible absorption spectra. Its effect as an agent for NIR-based PTT was assessed on four different human cell lines, namely glioblastoma cell line U-87 MG, osteosarcoma MG-63, lung carcinoma A549, and triple-negative breast cancer cell line MDA-MB-231 by irradiation with 750 nm NIR laser for 10 min. Cellular damage was assessed in terms of MTT and cell cycle analysis and visualized by confocal microscopy. Results: The Ag-MNCs were successfully generated and exhibited excellent hyperthermic rise when exposed to NIR laser. A reduction of more than 60% of the cells was observed in the MTT assay. Confocal microscopy also confirmed significant nuclear damage to cells exposed to PTT in the presence of Ag-MNCs. Conclusion: Our results confirm that the Ag-MNCs have an excellent hyperthermic profile and as the test results indicate that it can be utilized as an agent for NIR-based PTT against various types of cancer cells.

Abstract Heterocyclic 1,3-diazine nucleus is a valuable pharmacophore in the field of medicinal chemistry and exhibit a wide spectrum of biological activities. PharmMapper, a robust online tool used for establishing the target proteins based on reverse pharmacophore mapping. PharmMapper study is carried out to explore the pharmacological activity of 1,3-diazine derivatives using reverse docking program. PharmMapper, an open web server was used to recognize for all the feasible target proteins for the developed compounds through reverse pharmacophore mapping. The results were analyzed via molecular docking with maestro v11.5 (Schrodinger 2018-1) using GTPase HRas as possible target. The molecular docking studies displayed the binding behavior of 1,3-diazine within GTP binding pocket. From the docking study compounds s3 and s14 showed better docked score with anticancer potency against cancer cell line (HCT116). Hence, the GTPase HRas may be the possible target of 1,3-diazine derivatives for their anticancer activity where the retrieved information may be quite useful for developing rational drug designing. Furthermore the selected 1,3-diazine compounds were evaluated for their in vitro anticancer activity against murine macrophages cell line. 1,3-Diazine compounds exhibited good selectivity of the compounds towards the human colorectal carcinoma cell line instead of the murine macrophages. The toxicity study of the most active compounds was also performed on non cancerous HEK-293 cell line.

Abstract In order to overcome the challenges of microbial resistance as well as to improve the effectiveness and selectivity of chemotherapeutic agents against cancer, a novel series of 4-(4-bromophenyl)-thiazol-2-amine derivatives was synthesized and its molecular structures were confirmed by physicochemical and spectral characteristics. The synthesized compounds were further evaluated for their in vitro antimicrobial activity using turbidimetric method and anticancer activity against oestrogen receptor positive human breast adenocarcinoma cancer cell line (MCF7) by Sulforhodamine B (SRB) assay. The antimicrobial activity results revealed that compound p2, p3, p4 and p6 exhibited promising antimicrobial activity that are comparable to standard norfloxacin (antibacterial) and fluconazole (antifungal). Anticancer screening results demonstrated that compound p2 was found to be the most active one against cancer cell line when compared to the rest of the compounds and comparable to the standard drug (5-fluorouracil). The molecular docking study demonstrated that compounds, p2, p3, p4 and p6 displayed good docking score within binding pocket of the selected PDB ID (1JIJ, 4WMZ and 3ERT) and showed promising ADME properties.

Abstract To combat the antimicrobial and anticancer drug resistance by pathogens and cancerous cells, efforts has been made to study the pharmacological activities of newly synthesized N-(4-(4-bromophenyl)thiazol-2-yl)-2-chloroacetamide derivatives. The molecular structures of the synthesized derivatives were confirmed by their physicochemical properties and spectroanalytical data (NMR, IR and elemental). The synthesized compounds were evaluated for their in vitro antimicrobial activity against bacterial (Gram positive and Gram negative) and fungal species using turbidimetric method and anticancer activity against oestrogen receptor positive human breast adenocarcinoma cancer cell line (MCF7) by Sulforhodamine B (SRB) assay. Molecular docking studies were carried out to study the binding mode of active compounds with receptor using Schrodinger v11.5. The antimicrobial activity results revealed that compounds d1, d2 and d3 have promising antimicrobial activity. Anticancer screening results indicated that compounds d6 and d7 were found to be the most active ones against breast cancer cell line. Furthermore, the molecular docking study demonstrated that compounds d1, d2, d3, d6 and d7 displayed good docking score within binding pocket of the selected PDB ID (1JIJ, 4WMZ and 3ERT) and has the potential to be used as lead compounds for rational drug designing.

Women empowerment is a broader term which has been described in a variety of ways. It is a global issue, which has been accelerated in recent decades. The term women empowerment has also received much attention from researchers, government and other stakeholders. It is now widely accepted that gender equality and women empowerment are essential component for achieving development results. The present article is an attempt to develop conceptual clarity of the term women empowerment and its dimensions in agriculture. As per the existing literature it has been reviewed that women empowerment is a complex and multidimensional concept. Different dimensions of women empowerment resulting from various definitions are: input in productive decisions and autonomy in production, ownership of assets and access to and decisions on credit, control over use of income, workload and time allocation and education. It has also been analysed that access to these dimensions and women empowerment might lead toward sustainable development in terms of improved livelihood resulting in reducing food insecurity.

An antimicrobial substance producing strain designated as A52 was isolated from a marine sediment sample and identified as Bacillus sp., based on 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. The ANI and dDDH analysis of the genome sequence displayed high identity with two strains of B. subtilis sub sp. subtilis. Strain A52 yielded two antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) that differed in activity spectrum. MALDI mass spectrometry analysis of HPLC purified fractions revealed mass of peptides as 3881.6 and 1061.9 Da. The antiSMASH analysis of genome sequence unraveled presence of identical biosynthetic cluster involved in production of sublancin from B. subtilis sub sp. subtilis strain 168, which yielded peptide with identical mass. The low molecular weight peptide is found to be a cyclic lipopeptide containing C16 β-hydroxy fatty acid that resembled surfactin-like group of biosurfactants. However, it differed in fatty acid composition and antimicrobial spectrum in comparison to other surfactins produced by strains of B. subtilis. It exhibited broad spectrum antibacterial activity, inhibited growth of pathogenic strains of Candida and filamentous fungi. Further, it exhibited hemolytic activity, but did not show phytotoxic effect in seed germination experiment. The emulgel formulation of surfactin-like lipopeptide showed antimicrobial activity in vitro and did not show any irritation effects in animal studies using BALB/c mice. Moreover, surfactin-like lipopeptide displayed synergistic activity with fluconazole against Candida, indicating its potential for external therapeutic applications.

Background and Aims: Cholelithiasis is known to produce diverse histopathological changes in the gallbladder mucosa. In the present study, we aimed to find the correlation between various gallstone characteristics (i.e., number, size, and morphological type) with the type of mucosal response in gallbladder mucosa (i.e., inflammation, hyperplasia, metaplasia, and carcinoma). Methods: The present study was conducted prospectively on 100 patients undergoing cholecystectomy for symptomatic cholecystitis. Gallstones were assessed for various parameters, i.e., number, size, and morphological type. Gallbladder mucosa was subjected to histopathological examination. Sections were taken from body, fundus, and neck of gallbladder. Results: Of 100 cases, maximum type was of mixed stones (54%) and was multiple in number (46%). However, gallstone type and number are nonsignificant variables to produce precancerous lesions (i.e., hyperplasia and metaplasia). Statistically significant results were obtained while comparing the mucosal response with gallstone size (P = 0.012). Conclusion: As the gallstone size increases, the response in gallbladder mucosa changes from cholecystitis, hyperplasia, and metaplasia to carcinoma. Gallstone type and number are nonsignificant variables to produce precancerous lesions.

Controlling the magnetic properties of a nanoparticle efficiently via its particle size to achieve optimized heat under alternating magnetic field is the central point for magnetic hyperthermia-mediated cancer therapy (MHCT). Here, we have shown the successful use of stevioside (a natural plant-based glycoside) as a promising biosurfactant to control the magnetic properties of Fe3O4 nanoparticles by controlling the particle size. The biocompatibility and cellular uptake efficiency by rat C6 glioma cells and calorimetric magnetic hyperthermia profile of the nanoparticles were further examined. Our finding suggests superior properties of stevioside-coated magnetite nanoparticles in comparison to polysorbate-80 and oleic acid coated nanomagnets as far as particle size reduction, biocompatibility, hyperthermic effect, and cellular uptake by the glioblastoma cancer cells are concerned. The stevioside-coated nanomagnets exhibiting the maximum temperature rise were further investigated as heating agents in in vitro magnetic hyperthermia experiments (405 kHz, 168 Oe), showing their efficacy to induce cell death of rat C6 glioma cells after 30 min at a target temperature T = 43 °C.

Abstract Background Cancer is at present one of the leading causes of death in the world. It accounts for 13% of deaths occurred worldwide and is continuously rising, with an estimated million of deaths up to 2030. Due to poor availability of prevention, diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer, the rate of mortality is at alarming level globally. In women, hormone-dependent estrogen receptor positive (ER+) breast cancer making up approximately 75% of all breast cancers. Hence, it has drawn the extensive attention of researchers towards the development of effective drugs for the treatment of hormone-dependent breast cancer. Estrogen, a female sex hormone has a vital role in the initiation and progression of breast malignancy. Therefore, estrogen receptor is the central target for the treatment of breast cancer. Conclusion In this review, we have studied various classes of antiestrogens that have been designed and synthesized with selective binding for estrogen alpha receptor (ER). Since estrogen receptor α is mainly responsible for the breast cancer initiation and progression, therefore there is need of promising strategies for the design and synthesis of new therapeutic ligands which selectively bind to estrogen alpha receptor and inhibit estrogen dependent proliferative activity.

Hirudiniasis is the term coined to indicate leech invasion into a body orifice or cavity. Here we present a case of epistaxis due to hirudiniasis. Removal of the leech is difficult as it is slippery and firmly attached to nasal mucosa by its sucker. Various innovative techniques have been used to remove the leech as it has to be removed in total, because if a part of sucker is left behind it leads to persistent bleed and infection. This infestation is common in the tropics, Mediterranean countries, Africa and Asia. Clinicians in non leech areas might not be familiar with this condition. Advice should be given regarding lifestyle modification, particularly changes to how water is drunk, to prevent further infestation. This article is just a small attempt to familiarize doctors in the Indian subcontinent with this unique condition in cases of recurrent nasal bleed.

Anaemia is a public health problem in Ghana. We sought to identify factors associated with haemoglobin concentration (Hb) and anaemia among school-attending adolescents. We analysed data from 2948 adolescent girls and 609 boys (10–19 years) selected from 115 schools from regions of Ghana as a secondary analysis of baseline surveys conducted at two time-points. We measured Hb, malaria from capillary blood, anthropometry and used a modified food frequency questionnaire to assess diet. Multivariable linear and Poisson regression models were used to identify predictors of Hb and anaemia. The prevalence of anaemia, malaria and geophagy were 24, 25, and 24 %, respectively, among girls and 13, 27 and 6 %, respectively, among boys. Girls engaging in geophagy had a 53 % higher adjusted prevalence of anaemia and 0⋅39 g/dl lower Hb. There were similar results among those who tested positive for malaria (+52 % anaemia; −0⋅42 g/dl Hb). Among girls, lower anaemia prevalence and higher Hb were associated with consumption of foods rich in haeme iron (−22 %; +0⋅18 g/dl), consumption of iron-fortified cereal/beverages consumed with citrus (−50 %; +0⋅37 g/dl) and being overweight (−22 %; +0⋅22 g/dl). Age was positively associated with anaemia among girls, but negatively associated among boys. Boys who tested positive for malaria had 0⋅31 g/dl lower Hb. Boys who were overweight or had obesity and consumed flour products were also more likely to be anaemic (119 and 56 %, respectively). Factors associated with Hb and anaemia may inform anaemia reduction interventions among school-going adolescents and suggest the need to tailor them uniquely for boys and girls.

Wilt is the most common disease encountered in tomato crop. To devise an eco-friendly management module against F. oxysporum f. spp. solani, the causal organism, native isolates of Pseudomonas spp. were isolated from agricultural fields. The present experiment was conducted at SKUAST-Jammu between 2014-15. Biochemical screening of isolates revealed that antimicrobial compounds, viz. 2,4-DAPG and siderophore production were maximum in isolate PS 1 (217. 70 μg/ml and 32. 25 μg/ml) and HCN production was highest in isolate PS 6 (0. 11 μg/ml). Isolates PS 1 to PS 20 produced ferrate hydroxamate type siderophores whereas PS 21 to PS 30 produced catecholate type siderophores. Growth promoting substances, viz. IAA, GA and phosphorus solubilization were maximum in PS 7 (583. 63 μg/ml), PS 15 (652. 07 μg/ml) and PS 30 (358. 25 μg/ml) respectively. TLC of 2,4-DAPG extracted from various isolates showed Rf values in the range of 0. 7 to 0. 89, close to the relative mobilty (Rf) of phloroglucinol (0. 89). PS 1 reported highest seed germination (75%) with vigour index of 1275. Pot experiment revealed that isolate PS 4 increased plant height, plant growth parameters and further reduced wilt incidence (34. 25%) as compared to the seedling treated with Fusarium oxysporum (60%).
