10. Posing Unique and Urgent Challenges to Understandings of Quality: Elucidations through a Froebelian Lens

Abstract

This paper reports on findings from a small pilot study undertaken with early years practitioners in Scotland. The Scottish Government is currently implementing its key election promise of almost doubling the entitlement to publicly funded early learning and childcare (ELC) for all three and four-year old and eligible two-year old children. A key message from the Scottish Government during this period has been that "quality" is at the heart of the expansion initiative (Scottish Government, 2017b). However, "quality" can be a contested and an ill understood concept (Moss, 2019). This pilot study, therefore, explored the perspectives of practitioners in Scotland regarding what "quality" in early years provision entails, particularly in this time of change and expansion. The paper will make three key arguments based on the findings from the study. First, that although "quality" is a much-used term in Scottish ELC settings, understandings of the term can be subjective, yet powerful and can leave practitioners with more questions than answers. Second, we argue that Fröbelian principles could ameliorate some of the issues regarding "quality" in Scotland, particularly in terms of combatting discrimination. Finally, we argue that those principles must be accompanied by a social justice lens in which prejudice and stereotypes are recognized, named, and unpacked and action for change taken.

11. Long-Term Impact of Living and Learning at High Altitude: An Altitude Physiology Class for Undergraduate Students

Abstract

Alma College initiated an Altitude Physiology class in 1997 devoted to living and learning at high altitude (3440 m). The class incorporated several key elements of High-Impact Educational Practice including a strong student-research component and collaborative groups assignments. A retrospective survey was administered to alumni of the class to determine its long-term impact. Student responses ranged from "agree" to "strongly agree" with statements regarding the class's impact on positive learning outcomes such as critical thinking, knowledge acquisition, synthesis of knowledge, and understanding of research. Students generally favored non-traditional formats such as living at altitude for gaining understanding of environmental physiology.

13. Superheroes Social Skills Program: A Replication with Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder in Pakistan

Abstract

This study investigated the efficacy of the Superheroes Social Skills program in increasing social engagement of four elementary-aged children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in Pakistan, where English was spoken as a second language. The investigators implemented the first six lessons from the program in the classroom and assessed its efficacy through observations made during a recess period. Although the skills were trained in one context (i.e., the classroom), observations showed that the participants increased social engagement in a second environment (i.e., recess playground) in which the skills had not been taught. Social engagement effect sizes were in the moderate to large range with larger effect sizes for social responses than for social initiations. The authors discuss the implications and research needs for implementing social skills programs in diverse cultures.

24. Understanding Paths and Options for Youth Citizenship and Social Justice

Abstract

Youth-focused researchers and practitioners need conceptual models to consider paths for youth citizenship and social justice which are attenuated to the context, social support, visibility, and structure of engagement opportunities. This article will expand upon the initial conceptual model created by Brennan et al. in this special issue by examining how it can be useful for both research and practice. Specifically, this model can help researchers and practitioners to: (1) remain aware of contextual factors affecting youth engagement; (2) understand how different forms of youth engagement fit within the model; and (3) consider strategies and research to encourage more radical forms of youth engagement. The paper will provide support for the conceptual validity of the model by examining theories which align with it and contextual factors to consider during its application. The paper will then apply the model to differentiate between two forms of youth engagement and conclude with a summary of areas for future research and application.

Abstract

This study utilized secondary analyses of a randomized controlled trial and investigated the extent to which prestest word identification efficiency, reading fluency, and vocabulary knowledge moderated the effects of an intervention on reading comprehension outcomes for struggling readers in sixth through eighth grades. Given that the experimental intervention included components that targeted word reading, reading fluency, and vocabulary, we hypothesized that students with lower pretest performance in those skill domains would benefit more from the intervention compared to students with relatively stronger pretest performance or students who received school-implemented (business-as-usual) intervention. Results indicated that pretest word identification efficiency and vocabulary did not moderate the effects of the intervention; however, moderation effects were observed for pretest oral reading fluency such that reading comprehension gains of students with lower pretest fluency were greater in the experimental intervention compared to students with higher pretest fluency or in the comparison condition. Reasons for the moderation effect are discussed. Findings underscore the use of moderation analyses when evaluating multicomponent interventions.

Abstract

This study aimed to assess the influence of the physical-chemical factors (particle size, shake flask speed, starting pH, and pulp density) in bioleaching of Zambian chalcopyrite using a novel native isolated Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans strain DJN1 2021 from samples collected within mining area at Copper Nkana slag dump also known as the Black Mountain in Kitwe, Copperbelt Province in Zambia. The bacterium isolation was done using the modified 9 K selective media and was identified as A. ferrooxidans by using conventional procedures and 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The resulting sequences were analyzed by trimming and generating consensus sequences using Bio-edit software. Blasting results produced a significant alignment of 99.6% similarity with the corresponding sequences of A. ferrooxidans in GenBank. The phylogenetic analysis entails that the isolated strain was identified as A. ferrooxidans and named A. ferrooxidans strain DJN1 2021 with accession number MZ713091. Bioleaching of chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) by A. ferrooxidans (DJN1 2021) was conducted in shake flasks (100 ml) with a 9 K medium. The experiments were tested to optimize the initial pH, particle size, pulp density, and shake flask speed in the recovery of copper from its ore. The results revealed that all of the factors significantly influence the bioleaching process. When the initial pH was 1.8, copper was extracted at the rate of 30.6% within 30 bioleaching days. This was the maximum dissolution observed. The effect of revolution speed in the three different shake flask speeds (i.e. 50 rpm, 90 rpm, and 150 rpm) showed a significant difference in the rate of copper dissolution. A marked difference was observed between shake flask speeds of 50 rpm and 90 rpm with dissolutions of 29.4% and 30.0% respectively. 47. 'Why Am I in All of These Pictures?' from Learning Stories to Lived Stories: The Politics of Children's Participation Rights in Documentation Practices

Abstract

In this paper, we report on Phase One of a small action research project that examined how Learning Stories were put into practice at one Scottish nursery. Specifically, the paper looks at young children's participation rights and how they were enacted within the authorship of the stories. The project used an action research approach in which qualitative data about participants' current experiences with the stories was used to spark reflection, experimentation and change in documentation practices. Drawing on Phase One data from young children, parents and practitioners at the nursery, our findings illustrate the complex enactment of children's participation rights, including children's right to information, freedom of expression and their right to express their views and have those views taken into account. The paper concludes that more work needs to be done in the field of Learning stories to (a) acknowledge the complex political and material considerations at play in the creation of pedagogical documentation and (b) to accommodate children's own authorship, through flexible, non (or less) written methods.
