Abstract

The strength distributions of the Isoscalar Giant Monopole Resonance (ISGMR) and Isoscalar Giant Quadrupole Resonance (ISGQR) in 142,146-150Nd have been determined via inelastic alpha-particle scattering with the Grand Raiden (GR) Spectrometer at the Research Center for Nuclear Physics (RCNP), Japan. In the deformed nuclei 146-150Nd, the ISGMR strength distributions exhibit a splitting into two components, while the nearly spherical nucleus 142Nd displays a single peak in the ISGMR strength distribution. A noteworthy achievement in this study is the first-time detection of overtones in the Isoscalar Giant Quadrupole Resonance (ISGQR) strength distributions within Nd isotopes at an excitation energy around 25 MeV obtained through Multipole Decomposition Analysis (MDA)., Comment: Accepted for publication in Physics Letters B

Abstract

The ability to efficiently control charge and spin in the cuprate high-temperature superconductors is crucial for fundamental research and underpins technological development. Here, we explore the tunability of magnetism, superconductivity and crystal structure in the stripe phase of the cuprate La_2-xBa_xCuO_4, with x = 0.115 and 0.135, by employing temperature-dependent (down to 400 mK) muon-spin rotation and AC susceptibility, as well as X-ray scattering experiments under compressive uniaxial stress in the CuO_2 plane. A sixfold increase of the 3-dimensional (3D) superconducting critical temperature T_c and a full recovery of the 3D phase coherence is observed in both samples with the application of extremely low uniaxial stress of 0.1 GPa. This finding demonstrates the removal of the well-known 1/8-anomaly of cuprates by uniaxial stress. On the other hand, the spin-stripe order temperature as well as the magnetic fraction at 400 mK show only a modest decrease under stress. Moreover, the onset temperatures of 3D superconductivity and spin-stripe order are very similar in the large stress regime. However, a substantial decrease of the magnetic volume fraction and a full suppression of the low-temperature tetragonal structure is found at elevated temperatures, which is a necessary condition for the development of the 3D superconducting phase with optimal T_c. Our results evidence a remarkable cooperation between the long-range static spin-stripe order and the underlying crystalline order with the three-dimensional fully coherent superconductivity. Abstract

Agriculture plays a key role in the overall economic and social wellbeing in Africa. Now, Africa appears to emerge as a key player in food production because there exists enormous unused land for cultivation. On the basis of availability of data, this study aims at investigating the impact of the climate change on rice production in the twenty-five African countries from 2002 to 2014 following a static panel data approach using World Bank and Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) data. Considering [CO.sub.2] (Carbon Di Oxide) emissions as average precipitation in depth and temperature change as climate change indicators along with other control variables such as fertilizer consumption and use of pesticides, this study observes that these climate indicators have significant adverse impact in explaining variations in spatial and temporal change in rice production in African countries. It may be demonstrated from the empirical analysis that those climate variables like [CO.sub.2] emissions, pesticide use and temperature change are statistically significant at a 5 %, 10 % and 5 % levels, respectively. All the indicators have negative effects on rice production in African countries. The coefficients associated with these indicators are negative and statistically significant indicating that higher [CO.sub.2] emissions adversely affect rice production in Africa. Moreover, pesticides used per kg in production have an inverse relation with rice production in this continent. Further, temperature harms rice production in African countries. Temperature changes negatively affect rice production as indicated by its coefficient value being -199958.10. The results also demonstrate that adaptation of new rice seed varieties that are more tolerant to higher temperature will be more effective in response to climate change. The study suggests that there is need for enormous development in the agriculture sector, to reach the ultimate goal. In particular, development of irrigation system and large-scale funding by the government in African countries is required. Abstract

Background: The genotype x environment interaction greatly influences the success of breeding and in multi-location trials complicates the identification of superior genotypes for a single location, due to magnitude of genotype by location interaction are often greater than genotype by year interaction. This necessitates genotype evaluation in multi environments trials in the advanced stages of selection. Methods: Nine elite pigeonpea genotypes of mid-early duration were evaluated in six diverse locations in randomized complete block design with three replications during kharif, 2019 to ascertain the stable genotypes, environments discrimination and genotype by environment crossovers using AMMI and GGE biplot stability models. Result: The results in the present investigation revealed that first two principal components explained 73.4% of variation interaction, while, 80.50% in GGE biplot. Both the models identified WRGE-126 (G6) as stable performer with high yield (1733 kg ha-1) and among the locations Tandur (E1) measured as the ideal environment. Whereas, the environments, Adilabad (E3) and Warangal (E4) were observed representative with better discriminating ability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
