Structured Abstract: Background and aims: Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is characterized by lifelong exposure to high LDL-c concentrations and premature atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease; nevertheless, disease severity can be heterogeneous.We aimed at evaluating if the immune-inflammatory system could modulate atherosclerosis burden in FH. Methods: From a cohort of subjects with confirmed FH (Dutch Lipid Clinic Network and genotype), 92 patients receiving high-intensity lipid-lowering therapy (statin ± ezetimibe) were included. The extension and severity of coronary atherosclerosis was assessed by standardized reporting systems (CAD-RADS) for coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) and coronary artery calcium (CAC) scores. Lipids, apolipoproteins, anti-oxLDL and anti-apolipoprotein B-D peptide (anti-ApoB-D) autoantibodies (IgM and IgG), lymphocytes subtypes, platelet, monocyte and endothelial microparticles (MP), IgM levels (circulating or produced by B1 cells) and cytokines in the supernatant of cultured cells were determined. Multiple linear regression models evaluated associations of these biomarkers with CAC and CAD-RADS scores. Results: In univariate analysis CAC correlated with age, systolic blood pressure, TCD4+ cells, and titers of IgM anti-ApoB-D. In multiple linear regression [ANOVA F = 2.976; p = 0.024; R2 = 0.082), CD4+T lymphocytes (B = 35.289; beta = 0.277; p = 0.010; 95%CI for B 8.727 to 61.851), was independently associated with CAC. CAD-RADS correlated with age, systolic blood pressure, titers of IgM anti-ApoB-D, and endothelial MP in univariate analysis. In multiple linear regression, [ANOVA F = 2.790; p = 0.032; R2 = 0.119), only age (B = 0.027; beta = 0.234; p = 0.049; 95% CI for B 0.000 to 0.053) was independent predictor. Conclusions: In subjects with FH, under high-intensity lipid-lowering therapy, age and CD4+T cells were associated to atherosclerosis burden.

Resumo Fundamento A estratégia farmacoinvasiva é uma alternativa na inviabilidade da intervenção coronária percutânea primária (ICP). Objetivos Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar os efeitos da estratégia farmacoinvasiva precoce sobre o tamanho da área infartada e a fração de ejeção ventricular esquerda em pacientes idosos e não idosos. O papel dos marcadores inflamatórios também foi avaliado. Métodos Pacientes (n=223) com infarto do miocárdio com elevação do segmento ST (IAMCSST) foram prospectivamente incluídos e submetidos à trombólise medicamentosa nas primeiras seis horas, e à angiografia coronariana e à ICP, quando necessária, nas primeiras 24 horas. The renin angiotensin system is composed of several enzymes and substrates on which angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) 1 and renin act to produce angiotensin II. ACE1 and its substrates control blood pressure, affect cardiovascular and renal function, hematopoiesis, reproduction, and immunity. The increased expression of ACE1 has been observed in human monocytes during congestive heart failure and abdominal aortic aneurysm. Moreover, T lymphocytes from individuals with hypertension presented increased expression of ACE1 after in vitro stimulation with angiotensin II (ATII) with the highest ACE1 expression observed in individuals with hypertension with low-grade inflammation. Our group and others have shown that aging is associated with comorbidities, chronic inflammation, and immunosenescence, but there is a lack of data about ACE1 expression on immune cells during the aging process. Therefore, our aim was to evaluate the levels of ACE1 expression in nonlymphoid cells compared to lymphoid that in cells in association with the immunosenescence profile in adults older than 60 years. Cryopreserved peripheral blood mononuclear cells obtained from blood samples were used. Cells were stained with monoclonal antibodies and evaluated via flow cytometry. We found that ACE1 was expressed in 56.9% of nonlymphocytes and in more than 90% of lymphocytes (all phenotypes). All donors exhibited characteristics of immunosenescence, as evaluated by low frequencies of naïve CD4+ and CD8+ T cells, high frequencies of effector memory re-expressing CD45RA CD8+ T cells, and double-negative memory B cells. These findings, in addition to the increased C-reactive protein levels, are intriguing questions for the study of ACE1, inflammaging, immunosenescence, and perspectives for drug development or repurposing (Reviewed by the Plan P #PeerRef Community).

Resumo Fundamento Pacientes com infarto agudo do miocárdio podem apresentar uma grande área infartada e disfunção ventricular mesmo com trombólise e revascularização precoces. Objetivo Investigar o comportamento das citocinas circulantes em pacientes com infarto agudo do miocárdio com supradesnivelamento do segmento ST (IAMCSST) e a relação delas com a função ventricular. Métodos No estudo BATTLE-AMI (Avaliação dos Linfócitos Tipos B e T no Infarto Agudo do Miocárdio), os pacientes com IAMCSST foram tratados com uma estratégia farmacoinvasiva. Os níveis de citocinas (IL-1β, IL-4, IL-6, IL-10 e IL-18) no plasma foram testados através de ensaio de imunoadsorção enzimática (ELISA) no início do estudo e após 30 dias. A massa infartada e a fração de ejeção ventricular esquerda (FEVE) foram examinadas por ressonância magnética cardíaca 3-T. Valores de p menores que 0,05 foram considerados significativos. Resultados Na comparação com o início do estudo, níveis mais baixos foram detectados para IL-1β (p = 0,028) e IL-18 (p < 0,0001) após 30 dias do IAMCSST, enquanto níveis mais altos foram observados para IL-4 (p = 0,001) e IL-10 (p < 0,0001) no mesmo momento. Em contrapartida, nenhuma mudança foi detectada nos níveis de IL-6 (p = 0,63). Os níveis da proteína C-reativa de alta sensibilidade e de IL-6 se correlacionaram no início do estudo (rho = 0,45, p < 0,0001) e 30 dias após o IAMCSST (rho = 0,29, p = 0,009). No início do estudo, a correlação entre os níveis de IL-6 e FEVE também foi observada (rho = -0,50, p = 0,004). Conclusões Durante o primeiro mês pós-infarto agudo do miocárdio, observamos uma melhora significativa no balanço das citocinas pró e anti-inflamatórias, exceto da IL-6. Nanotechnology-based strategies have played a pivotal role in innovative products in different technological fields, including medicine, agriculture, and engineering. The redesign of the nanometric scale has improved drug targeting and delivery, diagnosis, water treatment, and analytical methods. Although efficiency brings benefits, toxicity in organisms and the environment is a concern, particularly in light of global climate change and plastic disposal in the environment. Therefore, to measure such effects, alternative models enable the assessment of impacts on both functional properties and toxicity. Caenorhabditis elegans is a nematode model that poses valuable advantages such as transparency, sensibility in responding to exogenous compounds, fast response to perturbations besides the possibility to replicate human disease through transgenics. Herein, we discuss the applications of C. elegans to nanomaterial safety and efficacy evaluations from one health perspective. We also highlight the directions for developing appropriate techniques to safely adopt magnetic and organic nanoparticles, and carbon nanosystems. A description was given of the specifics of targeting and treatment, especially for health purposes. Finally, we discuss C. elegans potential for studying the impacts caused by nanopesticides and nanoplastics as emerging contaminants, pointing out gaps in environmental studies related to toxicity, analytical methods, and future directions.

Congenital toxoplasmosis has a high impact on human disease worldwide, inducing serious consequences from fetus to adulthood. Despite this, there are currently no human vaccines available to prevent this infection. Most vaccination studies against Toxoplasma gondii infection used animal models in which the infection was established by exogenous inoculation. Here, we review recent research on potential T. gondii vaccines using animal models in which infection was congenitally established. Endeavors in this field have so far revealed that live or subunit vaccines previously found to confer protection against extrinsically established infections can also protect, at least partially, from vertically transmitted infection. Nevertheless, there is no consensus on the more adequate immune response to protect the host and the fetus in congenital infection. Most of the vaccination studies rely on the assessment of maternal systemic immune responses, quantification of parasitic loads in the fetuses, and survival indexes and/or brain parasitic burden in the neonates. More research must be carried out not only to explore new vaccines but also to further study the nature of the elicited immune protection at the maternal-fetal interface. Particularly, the cellular and molecular effector mechanisms at the maternal-fetal interface induced by immunization remain poorly characterized. Deeper knowledge on the immune response at this specific location will certainly help to refine the vaccine-induced immunity and, consequently, to provide the most effective and safest protection against T. gondii vertical infection.

Com a pandemia do novo coronavírus, surge a necessidade de disseminar informações confiáveis sobre a COVID-19 e suas implicações aos profissionais da saúde. Nessa perspectiva, os docentes e acadêmicos do curso de Medicina da Universidade Federal da Fronteira Sul elaboraram vídeos informativos sobre a COVID-19 para profissionais que atuam no enfrentamento da pandemia na Atenção Primária dos municípios pertencentes a 6ª Coordenadoria Regional de Saúde do Rio Grande do Sul. Os vídeos foram baseados em materiais disponibilizados pela Fundação Oswaldo Cruz e Ministério da Saúde. Percebeu-se que levar essas informações foi de extrema importância, pois facilitou o acesso rápido e confiável, contribuindo para a boa prática de saúde mental e atualizações a respeito do Protocolo de Manejo Clínico do Coronavírus na Atenção Primária à Saúde. O sucesso do enfrentamento à COVID-19, o futuro do Sistema Único de Saúde e a saúde dos brasileiros também dependem dessas ações.

The palladacycle complex DPPE 1.2 was previously shown to inhibit Leishmania (Leishmania) amazonensis infection in vitro and in vivo. The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of DPPE 1.2 associated with a recombinant cysteine proteinase, rLdccys1, and the adjuvant Propionibacterium acnes on L. (L.) amazonensis infection in two mouse strains, BALB/c, and C57BL/6. Treatment with this association potentiated the leishmanicidal effect of DPPE 1.2 resulting in a reduction of parasite load in both strains of mice which was higher compared to that found in groups treated with either DPPE 1.2 alone or associated with P. acnes or rLdccys1. The reduction of parasite load in both mice strains was followed by immunomodulation mediated by an increase of memory CD4+ and CD8+ T lymphocytes, IFN-γ levels and reduction of active TGF-β in treated animals. No infection relapse was observed 1 month after the end of treatment in mice which received DPPE 1.2 associated with rLdccys1 or rLdccys1 plus P. acnes in comparison to that exhibited by animals treated with DPPE 1.2 alone. Evaluation of serum levels of AST, ALT, urea, and creatinine showed no alterations among treated groups, indicating that this treatment schedule did not induce hepato or nephrotoxicity. These data indicate the potential use of this association as a therapeutic alternative for cutaneous leishmaniasis caused by L. (L) amazonensis.

Este artigo examina a conversação psicanalítica e seu lugar no Outro contemporâneo a partir da experiência de um projeto de pesquisa e extensão com grupos de adolescentes em escolas. Apresenta-se um extrato de conversação a fim de demonstrar a instalação de um espaço de transmissão de narrativas que produz efeitos subjetivos nos participantes. Investiga-se como esse dispositivo opera num mundo em que as faculdades de narrar e de escutar estão enfraquecidas. Nesse sentido, propõe-se um diálogo da psicanálise de orientação lacaniana com o pensamento filosófico de Walter Benjamin e suas considerações sobre a transmissão da experiência e também com outros autores da filosofia e das ciências sociais que abordam as mutações discursivas desde a modernidade à hipermodernidade.

Abstract Purpose To investigate the binding affinity, stability, and sterility of aflibercept and ziv-aflibercept to vascular endothelial growth factor (Holash et al. in Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 99(17):11393–11398, 2002. https://doi.org/10.1073/pnas.172398299) after compounding and storage for up to 28 days at 4 °C and − 8 °C. Methods Tuberculin-type 1-mL syringes were prepared containing aflibercept (40 mg/mL) and ziv-aflibercept (25 mg/mL). Samples were stored at 4 °C and − 8 °C for 0, 14, and 28 days and evaluated for the binding affinity of anti-VEGF to VEGF and stability using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. The evaluation of sample sterility was performed. Results Laboratory trials with aflibercept and ziv-aflibercept showed preservation of the drug-binding capability to recombinant VEGF when stored in plastic syringes for up to 28 days at 4 °C and − 8 °C. No significant decrease in mass or concentration were observed. Microbiologic evaluations did not detect contamination in the syringes. Conclusions The current study corroborates that compounded anti-VEGF drugs aflibercept and ziv-aflibercept do not loose stability or binding affinity and do not become contaminated if prepared under sterile conditions and stored at 4 °C or − 8 °C for 14 or 28 days.

Beekeeping is an ancient activity that is gaining interest among practitioners and society in general. It is as an activity with positive impacts in the environmental, social and economic spheres, with the potential to reconnect these dimensions and contribute to sustainable development. Thus, it is important to determine the profiles of beekeepers across the world, and to understand the main social, economic or ecological drivers that shape their activities. Hofstede cross-cultural dimensions were used to better explain differences between countries. A survey was undertaken of beekeepers in different countries (Croatia, Estonia, Finland, Italy, Norway, Portugal, and Spain) in the native language of each nation. A total of 313 questionnaires, using an online platform or in paper form, was delivered face-to-face during training or dissemination events in 2019. Norway and Finland were the countries with the highest percentage of respondents with a university degree (>80%), while Spain (42%) and Croatia (48%) presented the lowest percentages. Most participants were experienced beekeepers (59% had more than five years of experience) with more than 50 colonies. With the exception of Italy, beekeeping appears to be a hobby or an additional professional activity. The main beekeeping products for these beekeepers were honey, wax, colonies and propolis, with an average honey production per season of 24.5 kg/hive. Crossing socio-demographic characteristics and Hofstede cross-cultural dimensions showed a relation among countries with higher Power Distance Index (PDI; this value expresses how society accepts and expects a certain inequality of power) and lower annual income and educational level (Croatia, Portugal, and Spain). A strong correlation appeared between Masculinity Femininity Index (MFI; this value refers to gender effects in society, with feminine societies meaning that the dominant values are caring for others and quality of life, as opposed to masculine societies, which are driven by competition, achievement and success) and age, income and education, with Norway presenting the most feminine society, with more educated and older beekeepers. The Uncertainty Aversion Index (UAI; this value explains how members of a society feel when dealing with unknown situations) was strongly associated with education. The results showed that increasing beekeepers’ income will contribute to balancing the distribution of power among members of society, and that this might be achieved by training, especially in Croatia, Portugal, Spain, and Italy.

Abstract Background Outbreaks of infections caused by rapidly growing mycobacteria have been reported worldwide generally associated with medical procedures. Mycobacterium abscessus subsp. massiliense CRM0019 was obtained during an epidemic of postsurgical infections and was characterized by increased persistence in vivo. To better understand the successful survival strategies of this microorganism, we evaluated its infectivity and proliferation in macrophages (RAW and BMDM) and alveolar epithelial cells (A549). For that, we assessed the following parameters, for both M. abscessus CRM0019 as well as the reference strain M. abscessus ATCC 19977: internalization, intracellular survival for up 3 days, competence to subvert lysosome fusion and the intracellular survival after cell reinfection. Results CRM0019 and ATCC 19977 strains showed the same internalization rate (approximately 30% after 6 h infection), in both A549 and RAW cells. However, colony forming units data showed that CRM0019 survived better in A549 cells than the ATCC 19977 strain. Phagosomal characteristics of CRM0019 showed the bacteria inside tight phagosomes in A549 cells, contrasting to the loosely phagosomal membrane in macrophages. This observation holds for the ATCC 19977 strain in both cell types. The competence to subvert lysosome fusion was assessed by acidification and acquisition of lysosomal protein. For M. abscessus strains the phagosomes were acidified in all cell lines; nevertheless, the acquisition of lysosomal protein was reduced by CRM0019 compared to the ATCC 19977 strain, in A549 cells. Conversely, in macrophages, both M. abscessus strains were located in mature phagosomes, however without bacterial death. Once recovered from macrophages M. abscessus could establish a new intracellular infection. Nevertheless, only CRM0019 showed a higher growth rate in A549, increasing nearly 10-fold after 48 and 72 h. Conclusion M. abscessus CRM0019 creates a protective and replicative niche in alveolar epithelial cells mainly by avoiding phagosome maturation. Once recovered from infected macrophages, CRM0019 remains infective and displays greater intracellular growth in A549 cells compared to the ATCC 19977 strain. This evasion strategy in alveolar epithelial cells may contribute to the long survival of the CRM0019 strain in the host and thus to the inefficacy of in vivo treatment.

Resumo Os adolescentes estão cada vez mais conectados às redes sociais, especialmente com o surgimento dos dispositivos digitais móveis. O uso intenso desses aparelhos pelos jovens tem gerado preocupação nos pais, familiares e educadores. Orientadas pela psicanálise, compreendemos a adolescência como um tempo lógico de elaboração simbólica do real da puberdade, trabalho psíquico que requer o desligamento da autoridade dos pais e a inserção no laço social. Nas sociedades tradicionais, a passagem da vida infantil para a vida adulta conta com marcadores sociais estabelecidos, como os ritos de passagem, que auxiliam a inclusão do jovem na comunidade. Nas sociedades ocidentais contemporâneas, a rarefação dos referentes simbólicos dificulta essa transição do espaço familiar para o grupo social mais amplo. Assim, buscamos, neste artigo, empreender uma discussão teórica relacionando os riscos na internet com os ritos de passagem no tempo lógico da adolescência. Como apoio para esta reflexão, utilizamos fragmentos de conversação realizada com adolescentes. Consideramos que, na atualidade, os impasses dessa operação de passagem se exprimem pela profusão de atos de caráter sacrificial que a juventude apresenta, contando com o papel decisivo da visibilidade proporcionada pelas tecnologias digitais.

Justificativa e objetivos: O estresse ocupacional pode estar relacionado ao surgimento de doenças físicas e psíquicas. Objetiva-se avaliar a associação dos aspectos psicossociais do trabalho, de acordo com o Modelo Demanda-Controle, com a ocorrência de transtornos mentais entre os trabalhadores das Estratégias de Saúde da Família em Santa Cruz do Sul, RS. Métodos: estudo com abordagem epidemiológica, de corte transversal e quantitativo. A população alvo do estudo foi constituída por 89 profissionais, entre médicos, enfermeiros, técnicos/auxiliares de enfermagem (TE) e agentes comunitários de saúde, pertencentes às equipes das 11 Estratégias de Saúde da Família do município de Santa Cruz do Sul. Utilizou-se um questionário contendo questões sociodemográficas, ocupacionais e outras pertencentes à Job Stress Scale e ao Self Reporting Questionnaire. Resultados: Constatou-se que 30,1% dos profissionais apresentavam alta demanda e baixo controle sobre o trabalho, resultando em alta exposição ao desenvolvimento de estresse ocupacional. A prevalência de transtorno mental comum nos profissionais submetidos ao trabalho de alta exigência foi de 38%. Conclusão: Frente a esses resultados preocupantes faz-se necessário que se tomem atitudes visando a prevenção ou redução do estresse laboral e do adoecimento no trabalho. O objetivo geral deste artigo consiste em analisar a composição de produto, demanda, rendimento e das interligações setoriais da agropecuária de Mato Grosso do Sul. Utilizou-se, para tanto, o método quantitativo de pesquisa, a partir da matriz insumo-produto e das noções das óticas do produto, demanda e rendimento do PIB. Dentre os principais resultados auferidos estão às compras e vendas concentradas, principalmente, no próprio setor e no setor de alimentos e bebidas. Quanto às óticas do PIB, essa atividade se posicionou entre as cinco primeiras em produto. Pela ótica do rendimento, as tributações e salários da agropecuária atingiram pequenas proporções sobre a economia. Por fim pela demanda, o destaque coube à participação das exportações destinadas ao restante do Brasil. Esses resultados demonstraram com isso, o funcionamento da agropecuária na economia de Mato Grosso do Sul, fornecendo subsídios a tomada de decisões do próprio setor e do governo.

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are an essential tool for regenerative medicine, which aims to develop new technologies to improve their effects to obtain useful transplantation results. MSC immunomodulatory role has been just demonstrated; however, how they react when they are stimulated by an adjuvant is poorly understood. Our group showed the adjuvant effect of killed Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) on hematopoietic stem cells. As these cells share the same MSCs bone marrow (BM) site and interact with each other, here we evaluated the P. acnes and its soluble polysaccharide (PS) effect on MSCs and their immunomodulatory role in a murine model of traumatic brain injury (TBI). The bacteria increased the absolute number of MSCs, including MSC subpopulations, and maintained MSC plasticity. P. acnes and PS enhanced MSC proliferation and improved their immunomodulatory effect. P. acnes-MSC and PS-MSC transplantation increased anti-inflammatory cytokine expression and diminished pro-inflammatory cytokine expression after injury. This effect seemed to be mediated via TLR2 since P. acnes-KOTLR2-MSC transplantation decreased TGF-β and IL-10 expression. Increasing in neural stem cells and neuroblasts after PS-MSC transplantation was also observed. The adjuvant effect of P. acnes is an alternative means of expanding MSCs and important to identify their subpopulations to know better their role under exogenous stimuli including inflammation resolution in an experimental model.

O presente artigo realiza uma investigação psicanalítica sobre adolescência e suicídio por meio de uma elaboração teórica e do exame de algumas canções brasileiras que apresentam essa temática. Com base na abordagem psicanalítica da adolescência, ressalta-se a concepção freudiana de trabalho psíquico. Este é necessário na operação de atualização subjetiva que viabiliza a passagem adolescente e tem semelhanças com o processo de elaboração do luto. Esse ponto de convergência é o suporte da aproximação que propomos entre adolescência, suicídio e suas narrativas ficcionais, entre elas as canções. Entendemos o alcance e os limites dessas formas sublimadas de discurso com as quais muitos adolescentes se identificam. De um lado, as canções podem constituir narrativas que dão um tratamento à angústia que irrompe com o despertar pubertário, possibilitando construções singulares por meio da palavra. De outro, a imersão do sujeito num discurso sobre a morte pode intensificar a angústia e ocasionar identificações soldadas por um gozo mortífero, precipitando o ato.

Resumo Este artigo propõe um exame da adolescência a partir de um debate entre a psicanálise e a etnologia. Considerando a variabilidade dessa passagem em diferentes sociedades, apresentamos alguns recortes extraídos de estudos etnológicos a fim de compreender o que garante essa operação em culturas não ocidentais. Com esse percurso, visamos contribuir para um melhor entendimento das coordenadas de Freud e de Lacan acerca da puberdade e seus desdobramentos no laço social, bem como vislumbrar novas leituras dos problemas da adolescência na contemporaneidade.

The present study focused on the activity of the palladacycle complex DPPE 1.1 on Leishmania (Leishmania) amazonensis. Promastigotes of L. (L.) amazonensis were destroyed in vitro by nanomolar concentrations of DPPE 1.1, whereas intracellular amastigotes were killed at drug concentrations fivefold less toxic than those harmful to macrophages. L. (L.) amazonensis-infected BALB/c mice were treated by intralesional injection of DPPE 1.1. Animals treated with 3.5 and 7.0 mg/kg of DPPE 1.1 showed a significant decrease of foot lesion sizes and a parasite load reduction of 93 and 99%, respectively, when compared to untreated controls. Furthermore, DPPE 1.1 was non-toxic to treated animals. The cathepsin B activity of L. (L.) amazonensis amastigotes was inhibited by DPPE 1.1 as demonstrated spectrofluorometrically by use of a specific fluorogenic substrate. Analysis of T-cells populations in mice treated with DPPE 1.1 and untreated controls was performed by fluorescence-activated cell sorter (FACS). IFN-γ was measured in supernatants of lymphocytes from popliteal and inguinal lymph nodes isolated from treated and untreated mice and stimulated with L. (L.) amazonensis amastigotes extract and active TGF-β was evaluated in supernatants of foot lesions; both dosages were carried out by means of a double-sandwich ELISA assay. A significant increase of TCD4+ and TCD8+ lymphocytes and IFN-γ secretion was displayed in mice treated with DPPE 1.1 compared to untreated animals, whereas a significant reduction of active TGF-β was observed in treated mice. These findings open perspectives for further investment in DPPE 1.1 as an alternative option for the chemotherapy of cutaneous leishmaniasis.

Justificativa e Objetivos: A tuberculose (TB), doença infectocontagiosa, é atualmente um problema de saúde pública no Brasil e no mundo, integrando a Lista Nacional de Agravos de Notificação Compulsória. Devido à alta incidência verificada, a cidade de Santa Cruz do Sul configura um dos municípios prioritários no controle de notificação da doença no estado do Rio Grande do Sul. Nesse contexto, as Estratégias de Saúde da Família (ESF) são contribuintes importantes do processo de notificação, por serem cada vez mais utilizadas como portas de entrada do sistema de saúde e como pontos de controle da doença. Este estudo tem como objetivo estabelecer a prevalência da notificação dos casos de TB nas ESF em Santa Cruz do Sul. Métodos: O estudo realizado foi observacional, de caráter transversal. Foram utilizados dados dos consolidados das famílias cadastradas em 11 ESF na cidade de Santa Cruz do Sul, referentes ao ano de 2013. Resultados: O total de casos notificados foi 17, sendo que todos possuíam 15 anos ou mais de idade. O documento não especificava o sexo dos indivíduos notificados. A prevalência de tuberculose, no total de ESF analisadas, foi de 0,51/1000 pessoas cadastradas. Conclusão: A taxa elevada de casos de TB no município pode estar relacionada a um aumento na qualidade da busca ativa dos pacientes, levando a um número elevado de notificações pelas ESF. Essa taxa elevada de notificações é relevante, uma vez que atenta para a importância das ESF na elaboração e adoção de medidas preventivas.

Pondberry (Lindera melissifolia(Walter) Blume) is an endangered dioecious, clonal shrub that grows in periodically flooded forests of the southeastern United States. The probability of survival of dispersed pondberry seeds and new germinants is unknown, but few seedlings are noted in the forest. This study was undertaken to: (1) identify herbivores and predators of pondberry seeds and seedlings, (2) record the fate of pondberry seeds and seedlings after simulated dispersal in areas with lower and higher understory cover, and (3) calculate the probability of seed survival in the two cover types. The study was conducted in or near the Delta National Forest and the Delta Experimental Forest, MS. Pondberry seed and seedling plots were established at sites with high or low cover. Video cameras with infrared illumination were set up to monitor animal visitors to the plots. Image analysis indicated that swamp rabbits (Sylvilagus aquaticus (Bachman)) and wood rats (Neotoma floridana Ord) cut or ate seedlings, while other animals visited the plots without damaging seedlings. Numerous bird species and mammals visited the seed plots and some were filmed eating seeds. Pondberry seeds exposed in open habitats had a significantly higher survival rate than those exposed in habitats with more herbaceous and woody understory cover. The novelty and quality of the temporal data collected via video monitoring indicate the importance of this method in collecting data that are not otherwise available on endangered and rare species.

O presente artigo propõe uma reflexão sobre o tema da adolescência na Psicanálise a partir de um recorte que privilegia a articulação entre o saber, com suas múltiplas implicações, e a puberdade, como o real do corpo que irrompe nesse momento da vida. Apresentaremos pontos das obras de Freud e de Lacan que corroboram essa articulação, bem como algumas discussões de autores contemporâneos que tangenciam essa problemática.

Immunization of BALB/c mice with HIVBr18, a DNA vaccine containing 18 CD4+ T cell epitopes from human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), induced specific CD4+ and CD8+ T cell responses in a broad, polyfunctional and persistent manner. With the aim of increasing the immunogenicity of this vaccine, the effect of Propionibacterium acnes as an adjuvant was evaluated. The adjuvant effects of this bacterium have been extensively demonstrated in both experimental and clinical settings. Herein, administration of two doses of HIVBr18, in the presence of P. acnes, increased the proliferation of HIV-1-specific CD4+ and CD8+ T lymphocytes, the polyfunctional profile of CD4+ T cells, the production of IFN-γ, and the number of recognized vaccine-encoded peptides. One of the bacterial components responsible for most of the adjuvant effects observed was a soluble polysaccharide extracted from the P. acnes cell wall. Furthermore, within 10 weeks after immunization, the proliferation of specific T cells and production of IFN-γ were maintained when the whole bacterium was administered, demonstrating a greater effect on the longevity of the immune response by P. acnes. Even with fewer immunization doses, P. acnes was found to be a potent adjuvant capable of potentiating the effects of the HIVBr18 vaccine. Therefore, P. acnes may be a potential adjuvant to aid this vaccine in inducing immunity or for therapeutic use.

Hybrid vaccines have been investigated in clinical and experimental studies once expresses total antigens of a tumor cell combined with the ability of a dendritic cell (DC) to stimulate immune responses. However, the response triggered by these vaccines is often weak, requiring the use of adjuvants to increase vaccine immunogenicity. Killed Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) exerts immunomodulatory effects by increasing the phagocytic and tumoricidal activities of macrophages, promoting DC maturation, inducing pro-inflammatory cytokines production and increasing the humoral response to different antigens. Here, we evaluated the effect of P. acnes on a specific antitumor immune response elicited by a hybrid vaccine in a mouse melanoma model. Hybrid vaccine associated with P. acnes increased the absolute number of memory T cells, the IFN-γ secretion by these cells and the IgG-specific titers to B16F10 antigens, polarizing the immune response to a T helper 1 pattern. Furthermore, the addition of P. acnes to a hybrid vaccine increased the cytotoxic activity of splenocytes toward B16F10 in vitro and avoided late tumor progression in a pulmonary colonization model. These results revealed the adjuvant effect of a killed P. acnes suspension, as it improved specific humoral and cellular immune responses elicited by DC-tumor cell hybrid vaccines.

OBJECTIVES: Myeloid-derived suppressor cells contribute to the immunosuppressive microenvironment during tumor development and limit the efficacy of cancer immunotherapy. Identifying myeloid-derived suppressor cells and associated factors is the first step in creating strategies to reverse the suppressive effects of these cells on the immune system. METHODS: To induce lung cancer, we administered 2 doses of urethane to BALB/c mice and observed these animals for 120 days. After this period, we evaluated the percentage of myeloid-derived suppressor cells in the blood, lung and bone marrow. The expression of alpha-smooth muscle actin, transforming growth factor-β, Toll-like receptor 2, Toll-like receptor 4, and interleukin-6 was also determined in the lung tissue. RESULTS: Myeloid-derived suppressor cells were increased in all evaluated tissues after lung cancer development in association with increased Toll-like receptor 4 expression and decreased interleukin-6 expression in the lung. We observed alpha-smooth muscle actin and transforming growth factor-β expression in lung nodules. CONCLUSIONS: We believe that the early diagnosis of cancer through determining the blood levels of myeloid-derived suppressor cells followed by the depletion of these cells should be further investigated as a possible approach for cancer treatment.

OBJECTIVES: Both renal function and immune system function decline with age. Although controversial, a significant number of studies have shown that the decline in kidney function is associated with the worsening of the immune system. These findings are reinforced by the increased susceptibility to infections and deficient immunization coverage after vaccination both in patients with chronic renal disease and in elderly individuals. Our objective was to evaluate a non-institutionalized elderly population from São Paulo City and correlate the estimated glomerular filtration rate with the percentage of lymphocytes in circulation. METHODS: A random population of 237 individuals (107 men and 130 women), ranging in age from 60 to 101 years, who were enrolled in the Health, Well-Being and Aging Study was evaluated for renal function (Modification on Diet in Renal Disease formula) and lymphocyte percentage (flow cytometry). RESULTS: Aging was associated with a decrease in the estimated glomerular filtration rate in both male and female individuals. We did not identify a significant correlation between the estimated glomerular filtration rate and either the percentage of CD4, CD8, and B cells or CD4/CD8 ratio. The median percentage of CD8+ T cells was significantly lower in individuals with an estimated glomerular filtration rate >60 mL/min/1.73 m². CONCLUSIONS: In this study, no statistical correlation was found between the estimated glomerular filtration rate and either the lymphocyte phenotype (CD4+,CD8+, and CD19+ cells) or the CD4/CD8 ratio in blood.

O objetivo deste artigo consistiu em analisar como o conceito de racionalidade limitada tem sido tratado nos manuais didáticos de Teoria Geral da Administração, com base em termos de qualidade e aprofundamento. Para tanto, foram utilizados três manuais didáticos disponibilizados pela Biblioteca Central da Universidade Federal Alfa, quais sejam: “Teoria Geral da Administração”, de autoria de Motta e Vasconcelos (Manual A); “Introdução à Administração”, de Chiavenato (Manual B); e “Administração: Teoria e Processos”, dos autores Caravantes, Caravantes e Kloeckener (Manual C). Esses foram observados com base na análise de conteúdo em quatro dimensões definidas a priori: delimitação da abordagem e qualidade das referências; dimensão histórico-concreta; dimensão das relações; e dimensão teórica. Os resultados evidenciaram que todos os manuais apresentaram considerações quanto ao pressuposto de racionalidade limitada e fizeram referência a Simon e Barnard, embora não tenham discutido as obras e suas contribuições de forma mais extensiva. O Manual A foi o mais completo nos eixos de análise aqui expostos. O Manual B se voltou a uma discussão teórica sumarizada e sintética. Já o Manual C definiu e conceituou a racionalidade limitada e foi o único a descrever os tipos de racionalidade apresentados por Simon.

O objetivo geral deste artigo consistiu em caracterizar as formas de governança da relação entre indústrias e suinocultores de Mato Grosso do Sul. Logo, foi utilizada a abordagem qualitativa de pesquisa, a partir de dados secundários e do método de abordagem rápida, advinda da aplicação de entrevistas face a face, sobre os gestores responsáveis pela relação com suinocultores, de duas indústrias, que apresentam mais de 90% da capacidade total de abate de suínos no Estado. Os resultados demonstraram a presença de formas plurais de governança, representadas pelas estruturas híbrida e hierárquica. A presença dessas formas plurais pode ser justificada, em partes, pela insuficiência da quantidade de leitões (ambiguidade) com determinado nível de especificidade e qualidade

Objetivo: Descrever os fatores sociodemográficos e ocupacionais e avaliar a prevalência de transtornos mentais comuns em trabalhadores das Estratégias de Saúde da Família (ESF) em Santa Cruz do Sul, RS. Métodos: Estudo com abordagem epidemiológica, de corte transversal e quantitativo, realizado no período de junho a agosto de 2013. Foram avaliados 83 trabalhadores, entre médicos, enfermeiros, técnicos/auxiliares de enfermagem e agentes comunitários de saúde, atuantes nas 11 unidades de saúde da família do município. O instrumento de pesquisa constituiu-se em um questionário autoaplicável, englobando aspectos sociodemográficos, ocupacionais e questões pertencentes ao Self-Reporting Questionnaire. Resultados: A idade média dos participantes foi de 37,1±8,9 anos, sendo a maioria agentes comunitários de saúde, do sexo feminino, casadas, com filhos, renda per capita de até 2 salários mínimos e ensino médio completo. A prevalência geral de transtorno mental comum foi de 19,7%, estando presente em todas as categorias profissionais, e mais frequente entre os enfermeiros (25%), porém sem diferenças estatísticas. Conclusão: O presente estudo, além de caracterizar a população de trabalhadores das ESF de Santa Cruz do Sul, RS, em seus aspectos sociodemográficos e ocupacionais, identificou que o sofrimento psíquico está presente, embora em graus variados, em todas as categorias profissionais avaliadas. Frente a esses achados relevantes, sugerem-se providências que visem à prevenção e promoção da saúde mental desses profissionais

BACKGROUND: Age-associated changes in the immune system cause decreased protection after vaccination and increased rates of infections and tumor development. METHODS: Lymphocyte percentages were compared by gender and age to establish differences between subtypes. Three mL blood samples were obtained from 218 randomly selected individuals (60-101 years old) who live in São Paulo city. Blood was lysed with Tris phosphate buffer and stained for 30 minutes with monoclonal antibodies (CD3PerCP, CD4FITC, CD8Pe, CD19Pe) for analysis by flow cytometry. Statistical analysis was by ANOVA. RESULTS: The percentage of CD4+ T cells (p-value = 0.005) and the CD4/CD8 ratio (p-value = 0.010) were lower in men, whereas the percentage of CD8+ T cells was lower (p-value = 0.002) in women; the percentage of B cells (CD19+ ) was similar between groups. Individuals grouped by gender and age range and compared showed a drop in CD4+ cells in 75 to 79-year-old men (female: 46.1% ± 8.1% and male: 38.8% ± 10.5%; p-value = 0.023). Also, the 80 to 84-year-old group of men had a higher percentage of CD8+ (female: 20.8% ± 8.2%, and male: 27.2% ± 8.2%; p-value = 0.032). Low percentages of B cells were detected in men in the 75 to 79-year-old (p-value = 0.003), 85 to 89-year-old (p-value = 0.020) and older than 90 year old (p-value = 0.002) age ranges. CONCLUSION: Elderly men present with more changes in lymphocyte subsets compared to elderly women. These findings could demonstrate impairment in the immune response since the lower CD4+ in men would provide less help to B cells (also lower in men) in terms of antibody production. In addition, the increase in CD8+ cells in this group could represent chronic inflammation observed during the aging process.

O presente artigo examina um recorte do percurso teórico de Lacan sobre o afeto da angústia. Nas obras analisadas, Lacan examina as principais hipóteses freudianas a respeito do surgimento da angústia e sua relação com um objeto, buscando esclarecer as lacunas e os impasses deixados por essas hipóteses. Essa releitura é de grande importância, visto que é a partir dela que Lacan constrói sua própria teoria acerca da angústia, teoria que se mostra essencial para a abordagem de questões de grande importância na psicanálise, como o problema do desejo e da constituição do sujeito. No entanto, é na formulação do conceito de objeto a que essa teorização demonstra ser o ponto nodal. Em vista disso, propõe-se a evidenciar elementos dessa teorização que permitam compreender como ela abre caminho para a concepção de objeto a e para toda a revisão que se dá sobre o estatuto do objeto. Para tanto, recorre-se a dois momentos da obra de Lacan – o seminário oito, A transferência (1960-1961), e o seminário 10, A angústia (1962-1963). Do seminário oito, é apresentado um capítulo que trata da relação da angústia com o desejo. No seminário 10, por sua vez, investiga-se os caminhos que o autor percorre para extrair o conceito singular de objeto a e para formular o estatuto desse objeto, estatuto que o estabelece como um conceito de fundamental importância para a práxis psicanalítica de orientação lacaniana. A macieira cultiva-se no nosso território desde tempos remotos. A sua expansão ter-se-á devido, em grande parte, ás ordens religiosas que, devido aos seus núcleos conventuais, permitiram a difusão das mais diversas variedades. O presente trabalho tem por base a instalação de um pomar de “novas variedades”, com cinco Grupos de variedades: Gala (Brookfield, Galaxy Evolution, Anaglo e Buckeye); Red Delicious (Itred e Jeromine); Golden Delicious (Reinders e Clone B); Fuji (Toshiro, Spike Spur, Kiku 8 e Raku Raku) e Rubens, tendo como objectivo o estudo do comportamento destas na região da Beira Alta. O campo de ensaio das “novas variedades” está situado na folha 3 Sul da Estação Agrária de Viseu, ocupando 2800 m2 do total da parcela. A plantação do pomar realizou-se entre os dias 13 e 15 de Março de 2006, com plantas de um ano de viveiro, provenientes de Itália. As observações e recolha de dados efectuaram-se durante o ano 2007. A colheita das maçãs teve início a 14 de Agosto e terminou a 10 de Outubro, sendo recolhidos dados para avaliação quantitativa e qualitativa da produção. Para a avaliação qualitativa da produção, realizaram-se medições de calibres, determinação de Dureza e Grau Brix, em todos os frutos colhidos. Podemos dizer que todas as variedades se adaptaram ao local onde foram instaladas, verificando-se, contudo que, para alguns dos parâmetros avaliados nas diferentes variedades, obtivemos diferenças significativas, enquanto que, noutros, essas diferenças foram menos relevantes. As variedades que obtiveram melhores resultados foram a Brookfield e a Anaglo, do Grupo Gala; a Itred, do Grupo Red Delicious; a Reinders, do Grupo Golden, e a Toshiro, do Grupo Fuji. A Rubens, que é uma maçã proveniente do cruzamento de Gala x Elstar, revelou-se como a variedade menos interessante. O Grupo Golden Delicious foi aquele que teve, relativamente aos parâmetros avaliados, um melhor comportamento, quando comparado com os restantes Grupos.

Enquadramento: Tratar de educação sexual, para além da atualidade do tema, prende-se, sobretudo, com a necessidade de uma abordagem que leve à adoção de atitudes favoráveis face à sexualidade e a comportamentos saudáveis por parte dos adolescentes. Objetivos: Identificar as preferências dos alunos na escolha dos interlocutores em assuntos de sexualidade, bem como analisar a relação com as atitudes face à sexualidade dos alunos do 3º ciclo do ensino básico. Métodos: O estudo realizado é de natureza quantitativa, descritivo-correlacional e transversal. Amostra não probabilística, por conveniência, de 545 alunos (262 rapazes e 283 raparigas), idade média de 13,95 anos (Dp= 1,25), maioritariamente residentes na aldeia (53,1%) e a frequentar o 3º ciclo do ensino básico nas escolas do Concelho de Tabuaço e Fundão. Foi aplicado um questionário visando a caracterização sociodemográfica da amostra, o conhecimento das suas vivências da sexualidade; foi, ainda, aplicada a Escala de atitudes face à sexualidade em adolescentes (Nelas, Fernandes, Ferreira, Duarte & Chaves, 2010). Resultados: Da amostra global de alunos, os principais interlocutores da sexualidade são os amigos (59,8%), seguido da mãe (40,9%), pai (16,1%), namorado/a (14,7%), irmãos (13,8%), professores (12,5%), e, por último, do médico/enfermeiro (4,6%). A mãe influencia significativamente e favoravelmente as atitudes face à sexualidade (p=0,006) e, no reverso, os irmãos influenciam de forma significativa e desfavoravelmente as atitudes face à sexualidade (p=0,050). Conclusão: Este estudo sugere que o papel da figura materna e dos irmãos está diretamente relacionado com as atitudes face à sexualidade dos alunos do 3ºciclo do ensino básico e que aqueles têm uma importância essencial na avaliação que estes fazem da sexualidade.

Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) is a gram-positive anaerobic bacillus present in normal human skin microbiota, which exerts important immunomodulatory effects, when used as heat- or phenol-killed suspensions. We previously demonstrated that heat-killed P. acnes or its soluble polysaccharide (PS), extracted from the bacterium cell wall, suppressed or potentiated the Th2 response to ovalbumin (OVA) in an immediate hypersensitivity model, depending on the treatment protocol. Herein, we investigated the mechanisms responsible for these effects, using the same model and focusing on the activation status of antigen-presenting cells (APCs). We verified that higher numbers of APCs expressing costimulatory molecules and higher expression levels of these molecules are probably related to potentiation of the Th2 response to OVA induced by P. acnes or PS, while higher expression of toll-like receptors (TLRs) seems to be related to Th2 suppression. In vitro cytokines production in cocultures of dendritic cells and T lymphocytes indicated that P. acnes and PS seem to perform their effects by acting directly on APCs. Our data suggest that P. acnes and PS directly act on APCs, modulating the expression of costimulatory molecules and TLRs, and these differently activated APCs drive distinct T helper patterns to OVA in our model.

A Púrpura de Henoch-Schonlein (PHS), também chamada de vasculite IgA, é a vasculite sistêmica mais comum na infância e ocorre geralmente entre 3 e 15 anos de idade, sendo 90% de todos os casos na faixa etária pediátrica.

A partir da hipótese de que a relação com o saber durante o período de latência e na passagem à puberdade tem um papel fundamental nas vicissitudes constitutivas do sujeito e no transcurso da adolescência, este trabalho se propõe a traçar um breve percurso na teoria psicanalítica no lastro das articulações entre latência, adolescência e saber, a fim de delinear uma linhainvestigativa, nas obras de Freud e de Lacan, sobre a problemática da puberdade. Com isso, almeja-se compreender melhoros impasses e embaraços que se apresentam na adolescência na contemporaneidade.

Objetivo: Identificar a prevalência de depressão em idosos atendidos pela Estratégia de Saúde da Família (ESF) e os fatores associados. Métodos: Estudo transversal com 151 idosos residentes em área adscrita à ESF de Passo Fundo/RS. Coletaram-se os dados utilizando questionário estruturado e Escala de Depressão Geriátrica GDS–15. Resultados: 33,1% são do sexo masculino, com faixa etária predominante entre 60-69 anos (50,3%), escolaridade média de 4,14 anos de estudo (DP: 2,63), 8,2% são analfabetos ou semianalfabetos, 21,9% declararam algum episódio depressivo e 2,6% outra doença psiquiátrica. Houve associação entre depressão e percepção de saúde, perda familiar, asma, ocorrência de fratura, insuficiência cardíaca e artrite (p

B-1 lymphocytes are the predominant cells in mouse peritoneal cavity. They express macrophage and lymphocyte markers and are divided into B-1a, B-1b and B-1c subtypes. The role of B-1 cells is not completely clear, but they are responsible for natural IgM production and seem to play a regulatory role. An enriched B-1b cell population can be obtained from non-adherent peritoneal cell cultures, and we have previously demonstrated that these cells undergo differentiation to acquire a mononuclear phagocyte phenotype upon attachment to the substrate in vitro. Nevertheless, the B-1 cell response to antigens or adjuvants has been poorly investigated. Because killed Propionibacterium acnes exhibits immunomodulatory effects on both macrophages and B-2 lymphocytes, we analyzed whether a killed bacterial suspension or its soluble polysaccharide (PS) could modulate the absolute number of peritoneal B-1 cells in BALB/c mice, the activation status of these cells and their ability to differentiate into phagocytes in vitro. In vivo, P. acnes treatment elevated the absolute number of all B-1 subsets, whereas PS only increased B-1c. Moreover, the bacterium increased the number of B-1b cells that were positive for MHC II, TLR2, TLR4, TLR9, IL-4, IL-5 and IL-12, in addition to up-regulating TLR9, CD80 and CD86 expression. PS increased B-1b cell expression of TLR4, TLR9, CD40 and CD86, as well as IL-10 and IL-12 synthesis. Both of the treatments decreased the absolute number of B-1b cells in vitro, suggesting their early differentiation into B-1 cell-derived phagocytes (B-1CDP). We also observed a higher phagocytic activity from the phagocytes that were derived from B-1b cells after P. acnes and PS treatment. The adjuvant effect that P. acnes has on B-1 cells, mainly the B-1b subtype, reinforces the importance of B-1 cells in the innate and adaptive immune responses.

Abstract Introduction: A report on the prevalence of glomerular disease diagnosed via renal biopsy in Salvador, BA, Brazil was published in 1973 and showed a predominance of membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis, which was frequently associated with hepatosplenic schistosomiasis. Objective: In this study, we investigate the potential changes in the distribution of glomerular diseases after a period of important epidemiological transition in Brazil. Methods: Pathology reports of all patients subjected to kidney biopsy from 2003 to 2015 in a referral nephrology service were reviewed. Clinical, laboratorial and pathological diagnoses were collected for analysis. Histological slides of the biopsies performed between 2003 and 2006 were reviewed to examine the accuracy of the estimates based on the pathology reports. Results: Among the biopsies performed during the time period, 1,312 met the inclusion criteria for the study. Focal and segmental glomerulosclerosis was the most prevalent diagnosis, followed by lupus nephritis. However, a trend toward a decrease in the prevalence of focal and segmental glomerulosclerosis was detected (p < 0.05), and an increase in lupus (p < 0.0001) and membranous glomerulonephritis (p < 0.005) was observed. Conclusion: The data presented herein suggest the occurrence of changes in the distribution of nephrological diseases in Salvador, Brazil. The disease that was most prevalent shifted from membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis to focal and segmental glomerulosclerosis from 1975 to 2006 and from focal and segmental glomerulosclerosis to lupus nephritis from 2006 to 2015.

Resumo Este artigo apresenta um exame da relação, apontada por Lacan, entre a maturação do objeto a na puberdade e a formação dos conceitos, com ênfase na interlocução entre esse psicanalista e Vygotsky. Na perspectiva vygotskiana, a entrada no pensamento conceitual só se efetua a partir da maturação pubertária, em virtude das novas funções psíquicas adquiridas nessa fase. Essa concepção corrobora a proposição lacaniana de que as transformações decorrentes do encontro com o objeto na puberdade - tempo lógico em que o sujeito tem que se haver com a falta de uma maneira inédita - proporcionam a assimilação dos conceitos. Considerando que se trata de um debate de fundo que não é evidente no contexto em que aparece na obra de Lacan, propõe-se investigar a finalidade dessa interlocução na elaboração lacaniana sobre a puberdade, que constitui uma importante contribuição à abordagem psicanalítica da adolescência.

Habitat loss, climate change, and other environmental degradations pose severe challenges to beekeepers. Therefore, this sector needs to rely on updated information so that the intervening actors can deal with the problems. In this context, and assuming that professional training can greatly help those acting in the beekeeping sector, this work intended to investigate the gaps in the updated knowledge of beekeepers and how these can be filled through lifelong learning. The research was conducted in seven European countries (Croatia, Estonia, Finland, Italy, Norway, Portugal, and Spain). The data were collected through a questionnaire survey translated into the native languages of all participating countries. The results revealed that the topics of highest interest are apiary health and pest control and the management of the colonies throughout the year. The beekeepers update their knowledge through family, complemented by professional training, with participants preferring in-person courses as well as, in the workplace or in internships. The learning methodologies they consider most useful are project-based learning and learning through gamification. The videos and paper books or manuals are particularly valued as learning materials, and practical exercises are considered the most helpful assessment format. Finally, considering the effect of sociodemographic variables on the learning experiences and preferences of beekeeping actors, it was observed that the country was the most influential of the variables under study. In conclusion, this work revealed valuable information that should be used to design professional training actions to help the professionals in the beekeeping sector enhance their competencies and be better prepared to manage their activities successfully.
