21. Psychiatric neuroimaging at a crossroads: Insights from psychiatric genetics.

Abstract

Thanks to methodological advances, large-scale data collections, and longitudinal designs, psychiatric neuroimaging is better equipped than ever to identify the neurobiological underpinnings of youth mental health problems. However, the complexity of such endeavors has become increasingly evident, as the field has been confronted by limited clinical relevance, inconsistent results, and small effect sizes. Some of these challenges parallel those historically encountered by psychiatric genetics. In past genetic research, robust findings were historically undermined by oversimplified biological hypotheses, mistaken assumptions about expectable effect sizes, replication problems, confounding by population structure, and shared biological patterns across disorders. Overcoming these challenges has contributed to current successes in the field. Drawing parallels across psychiatric genetics and neuroimaging, we identify key shared challenges as well as pinpoint relevant insights that could be gained in psychiatric neuroimaging from the transition that occurred from the candidate gene to (post) genome-wide "eras" of psychiatric genetics. Finally, we discuss the prominent developmental component of psychiatric neuroimaging and how that might be informed by epidemiological and omics approaches. The evolution of psychiatric genetic research offers valuable insights that may expedite the resolution of key challenges in psychiatric neuroimaging, thus potentially moving our understanding of psychiatric pathophysiology forward. • There are several challenges shared by psychiatric genetics and neuroimaging. • Challenges include distributed, small effects, replicability, and oversimplified hypotheses. • Insights from psychiatric genetics' history can inform psychiatric neuroimaging. 41. What Can Psychoanalysis Learn From Neuroscience? A Theoretical Basis For The Emergence Of a Neuropsychoanalytic Model.

Abstract

Psychoanalysis prioritizes the subjective experience of the mind. Neuroscience studies the objective aspects of the brain. These different focuses are the advantage—and the difficulty—of a dialogue between the two fields. Some argue that the emergence of "neuropsychoanalysis" reduces the mind to meaningless biological correlates. However, dialogue with neuroscience differs from reduction to objective explanation. Rather, through theoretical exchange, neuropsychoanalysis opens avenues for new possibilities of meaning. A dialogue with neuroscience can elucidate new relationships between different subjective phenomena, such as the vicissitudes of basic motivational systems. Whereas the opponents of neuropsychoanalysis argue that drives and affects are irreducible to biology—implying that they are the limit of neuroscience—this article argues that these concepts are instead the critical juncture of this dialogue. From such an intersection, a neuropsychoanalytic model of levels of the mind is proposed, where the unconscious is reframed as a dynamic effect of disjunctures between levels of consciousness. 42. Body weight of individuals with obesity decreases after a 6-month high pasta or low pasta Mediterranean diet weight-loss intervention.

Abstract

Background& Aims: The effect of pasta consumption within a low-energy Mediterranean diet on body weight regulation has been scarcely explored. This paper investigates the effect of two Mediterranean diets, which differed for lower or higher pasta intake, on body weight change in individuals with obesity.Methods& Results: Forty-nine volunteers finished a quasi-experimental 6-month two-parallel group dietary intervention. Participants were assigned to a low-energy high pasta (HP) or to a low-energy low Pasta (LP) group on the basis of their pasta intake (HP ≥ 5 or LP ≤ 3 times/week). Anthropometrics, blood pressure and heart rate were measured every month. Weight maintenance was checked at month 12. Body composition (bioelectrical impedance analysis, BIA), food intake (24-h recall plus a 7-day carbohydrate record) and the perceived quality of life (36-item short-form health survey, SF-36) were assessed at baseline, 3 and 6 months. Blood samples were collected at baseline and month 6 to assess glucose and lipid metabolism. After 6-month intervention, body weight reduction was -10 ± 8% and -7 ± 4% in HP and LP diet, respectively, and it remained similar at month 12. Both dietary interventions improved anthropometric parameters, body composition, glucose and lipid metabolism, but no significant differences were observed between treatment groups. No differences were observed for blood pressure and heart rate between treatments and among times. HP diet significantly improved perception of quality of life for the physical component.Conclusions: Independent of pasta consumption frequency, low-energy Mediterranean diets were successful in improving anthropometrics, physiological parameters and dietary habits after a 6-month weight-loss intervention.
