This article is about the multidisciplinary Community of Practice (CoP) initiative that was implemented in the summer of 2020- summer of the pivot- at a Canadian post-secondary institution to prepare faculty, staff, and students for remote teaching and learning while navigating pandemic conditions created by COVID-19. The CoP as a case study using Critical Theory as a theoretical framework examines the experiences of a collective group of faculty and staff from different disciplines leading a multidisciplinary university-wide initiative and the implications of the approach for promoting effective pedagogies for teaching and learning remotely. Findings based on feedback from workshop attendees, reflections from the CoP facilitators, and comments forwarded to senior administrators about the impact and the effectiveness of the program indicate positive results. It is recommended that although the CoP initiative was originally conceived as a response to the summer of the pivot, it should become an integral approach to promoting dialogue and innovative strategies to advance equitable practices in higher education by cultivating community networks. The findings serve to continue constructive dialogues and discussions about how universities can transition, pivot, and mobilize innovatively and creatively to prioritize equitable teaching and learning conditions that challenge the status quo. This requires a long-term commitment by higher education institutions to break away from historically normalized practices and invest in innovative ways to identify and meet the needs of various stakeholders.

As the demand for sustainable and environmentally conscious practices continues to grow, recycled plastics have become increasingly popular for plastics manufacturers. However, reprocessing these materials can result in inconsistencies in both process and product quality, leading to a loss in mechanical properties. To address this issue, this work investigates the injection molding of recycled and virgin polypropylene (PP). Using a multi-cavity hot runner mold, correlations between processing parameters, such as melt temperature, mold temperature, pack pressure, soak time, and mechanical properties, were systematically investigated. A multivariate analysis approach was used to model the variables for each material. Results indicated significant correlations between processing, mechanical properties, and morphology. In particular, for the PP, the melt temperature affected the formation of [beta]-crystals and their transition to [alpha]-crystals upon tensile testing. Different morphology was observed for the recycled polypropylene (rPP), in which crystallization was affected by polyethylene (PE) contamination. The results discuss the injection molding polymer, structure, and properties, relationship providing an approach to understanding and optimizing the mechanical properties of rPP. Scottish teachers interested in working with film frequently find themselves faced with a significant challenge in acquiring the confidence and experience to work with this medium in the classroom. Film education does not yet form any significant part of Scottish teacher training programmes and, as such, incorporating film in a medium-specific manner into curricular teaching can be a challenge. This article explores the perspectives of two secondary school teachers at John Paul Academy in Glasgow, who, with the support of UK-based film education charity Into Film, have begun to explore concrete, long-term ways of integrating film education into the school curriculum.

Mn2+ coordinated by orthophosphate (Pi), metabolites, or peptides acts as a superoxide dismutase (SOD), and these Mn antioxidant complexes are universally accumulated in extremely radiation-resistant cell types across the tree of life. This behavior prompted design of decapeptide DP1 (DEHGTAVMLK) as a Mn2+ ligand, and development of a highly potent Mn2+-antioxidant (MDP) containing [Pi] = 25 mM, and [DP1] = 3 mM, the ratio found in the radioresistant bacterium Deinococcus radiodurans, with [Mn2+] = 1 mM. MDP is an exceptional antioxidant, both in vitro and in vivo, and has reinvigorated the development of radiation-inactivated whole-cell vaccines. This study investigates the nature of the active Mn2+ complex in MDP. We measure the affinity of DP1 for the substitutionally labile Mn2+ ion using isothermal-titration calorimetry (ITC) and use changes in the Mn2+ solution EPR spectrum to determine affinities of Mn2+ for DP1 and for Pi, and to monitor Mn2+ ligation while titrated with the fixed Pi/DP1 ratio of MDP, 25/3, using ENDOR/ESEEM to characterize DP1 ligation to Mn2+. In parallel, 1H NMR of DP1 was used to monitor binding interactions between Pi and DP1, and DP1 binding to the diamagnetic Ca2+. We report: i) DP1 forms an extremely weak, dynamic Mn2+ complex (Ka ≈ 40 M-1) ii) Mn2+ binds Pi much more strongly (Ka ≈ 390 M-1) as shown previously, but iii) DP1 and Pi jointly bind to Mn2+ in MDP to form a ternary Mn2+ (Pi) (DP1) complex with greater formation-constant than Pi alone (Ka app ≈ 670 M-1). Male infertility is a global health concern. The effectiveness of interventions developed to improve males' knowledge of fertility regulation and fertility-related risk factors remains unclear. This systematic review aimed to synthesize and evaluate the evidence for these interventions. Four databases were searched from inception to June 2023. Eligible studies examined interventions to increase fertility knowledge among presumed fertile males aged ≥16 years of age. Conference abstracts, protocols and studies without sex-disaggregated results for males were excluded. A narrative synthesis without meta-analysis was performed. A total of 4884 records were identified. Five studies (reported in six publications), all conducted in high-income countries, were included. Two were randomized control trials, and three were experimental studies. Interventions were delivered in person by a health professional (n = 3), online and via a mobile app. All studies showed a significant improvement in knowledge of fertility or fertility-related risk factors from baseline to follow-up. The largest improvement was observed for secondary and vocational students. A moderate, long-term retainment of knowledge was observed at two-year follow-up in one study. Available evidence suggests interventions to improve males' fertility knowledge are effective, particularly for younger, less educated males. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: This study aimed to examine the prospective association between psychological well‐being and overweight and obesity reversal. Methods: We analyzed data of UK children with overweight or obesity at ages 11 (n = 4556, baseline), 14 (n = 3791, baseline), and 17 years (follow‐up). Psychological well‐being‐related measures were characterized into indexes of caregiver‐reported child mental health and child‐reported psychosocial well‐being, with a higher score indicating better mental health or psychosocial well‐being. Weight changes were presented as reversal versus persistence of overweight or obesity and residualized‐change BMI z scores. Data were analyzed using regression analysis. Results: Better child mental health and psychosocial well‐being at age 11 years were independently associated with increased odds of reversal versus persistence (odds ratio [OR] = 1.16, 95% CI: 1.03 to 1.29; OR = 1.29, 95% CI: 1.15 to 1.44, respectively) and decreased BMI z scores (β = −0.08, 95% CI: −0.13 to −0.03; β = −0.07, 95% CI: −0.11 to −0.03, respectively) at age 17 years. However, neither of the indexes was associated with weight changes when measured at age 14 years. Analyses between psychological well‐being‐related measures and timing of measures indicated that psychological well‐being‐related measures were more likely to prospectively predict weight changes when measured at age 11 versus age 14 years. Conclusions: Better psychological well‐being at age 11 years is a prognostic factor that may be associated with an increased likelihood of reversing childhood overweight and obesity by age 17 years. Introduction: We examined the psychological burden associated with metabolic syndrome (MetSyn). Methods: We used comparable longitudinal data of older adults (≥50 years) from the UK (English Longitudinal Study of Aging) and the US (Health and Retirement Study). We defined MetSyn based on biomarker assessments (e.g., blood pressure, impaired glycemic control). Using regression models, we tested a range of individual psychological outcomes (e.g., depressive symptoms) associated with MetSyn. We also examined whether these psychological outcomes may explain or moderate the link between MetSyn and non‐communicable diseases (NCDs). Findings: MetSyn was associated cross‐sectionally with a range of psychological outcomes, including depression, anxiety, loneliness, hopelessness, cynical hostility, social strain, negative affect and decreased positive affect, social support and purpose in life. There was no convincing evidence that psychological factors interacted with or explained (mediated) the relationship between MetSyn and increased risk of developing NCD over 10‐year follow‐ups. Conclusions: MetSyn and the psychological burden outcomes examined may have independent effects on NCD risk. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
