Recent observations on the HL-2A tokamak give new experimental evidence of resonant tearing modes (r-TMs) caused by the redistribution of energetic ions (EIs) due to sawtooth collapses in neutral beam injection plasmas. The $m/n = 2/1$ ( m and n are the poloidal and toroidal mode numbers) r-TMs with frequencies chirping down rapidly are found after strong bursts of fishbone modes and closely followed strong sawtooth collapses. The frequencies of fishbone modes and r-TMs chirp down from 10 to 7 kHz and 5 to 2 kHz rapidly, higher and lower than the 4–6 kHz existing weak resistive TMs. The fishbone modes propagate in ion diamagnetic drift directions in poloidal. In contrast, r-TMs propagate in the electron diamagnetic drift direction, though r-TMs are excited by EIs. It is suggested that counter-passing EIs, which originated from redistribution of EIs due to fishbone modes and combined with sawtooth collapses, excite r-TMs. Simulation results from the M3D-K code reveal that the counter-passing EIs play an important role in the excitation of r-TMs. The results can help broaden understanding of the interaction mechanisms between energetic particles and TMs, and open up a new perspective on the excitation mechanism of r-TMs.

Since the first plasma realized in 2020, a series of key systems on HL-3 (known as HL-2M before) tokamak have been equipped/upgraded, including in-vessel components (the first wall, lower divertor, and toroidal cryogenic/water-cooling/baking/glow discharge systems, etc.), auxiliary heating system of 11 MW, and 28 diagnostic systems (to measure the plasma density, electron temperature, radiation, magnetic field, etc.). Magnet field systems were commissioned firstly for divertor plasma discharges. During the 2nd experimental campaign of HL-3 tokamak, several great progresses have been achieved. Firstly, the successful operation with plasma current larger than 1 MA was achieved under a divertor configuration. Secondly, the advanced divertor concept with two distinct snowflake configurations was realized. It is found that the distribution of ion saturation current and heat flux on bottom plate becomes wide due to magnetic surface expansion, demonstrating the advantage of such configuration in the heat flux mitigation. In addition, using the combination of NBI, ECRH and LHCD, the standard sawtoothing high confinement mode of megampere plasma was firstly accessed on the HL-3. The successful commissioning of HL-3 is beneficial for the initial operation of ITER.

Reduction of both the plasma density and toroidal flow speed, due to application of the predominantly n = 1 ( n is the toroidal mode number) resonant magnetic perturbation (RMP) for controlling the edge localized mode in the HL-2A tokamak, is numerically investigated utilizing the quasi-linear initial-value code MARS-Q (Liu et al 2013 Phys. Plasmas 20 042503). Simulation results reveal that the neoclassical toroidal viscosity (NTV) due to three dimensional fields plays the key role in modifying the plasma momentum and particle transport in the HL-2A discharge. By comparing the modeling results with the measured density pump-out in the experiment, the electron NTV particle flux model, in combination with the free-boundary condition for the axisymmetric change of the density at the plasma edge, is found to yield the best agreement in terms of both the pump-out level and the overall time scale. Further sensitivity studies show that the simulated density pump-out level is reasonably robust against variations in the model assumptions, including the particle diffusion model and the non-ambipolar versus ambipolar NTV particle flux. The latter however affects the time scale for reaching the steady state solution. Finally, it is found that the plasma edge-peeling response, the NTV torque, as well as the plasma momentum and particle transport, all are sensitive to the toroidal phase difference between the upper and lower rows of the RMP coil currents in HL-2A, with the 30 ^∘ coil phasing producing the minimal side effects on the plasma.

Improved energy confinement mode (I-mode) has been observed on the HL-2A tokamak. The I-mode features an edge transport barrier (ETB) in electron temperature and a low confinement mode like edge density. A weakly coherent mode (WCM) is observed in the edge region with the frequency of $f\sim 60{-}160$ kHz and the poloidal wavenumber of ${k_\theta }\sim 0.5{-}2.5{\text{cm}}{^{ - 1}}$ . The maximum of WCM amplitude is located near the top of electron temperature pedestal. A critical value of $E \times B$ velocity shear for triggering the L–I transition has been found, and is much lower than that for triggering the L–H transition. Additionally, ion internal transport barrier (ITB) has been observed in the I-mode. The formation of ion ITB is due to the increase of $E \times B$ velocity shear, leading to the suppression of turbulence. Transport analysis further confirms the existence of electron ETB and ion ITB. The coexistence of electron ETB and ion ITB leads to an improved plasma confinement, which is comparable to that in the high confinement mode, suggesting that I-mode with ITB regimes could be an interesting operation scenario for future fusion devices.

Esophageal cancer (EC) is a common malignancy worldwide. The X-ray repair cross-complementing 1 gene (XRCC1) is one of the most important candidate genes for influencing susceptibility to EC. This study aimed to investigate the effect of XRCC1 genetic variants on susceptibility to EC. A total of 383 EC patients (males: 239, females: 144, mean age: 56.62) and 387 cancer-free controls (males: 251, females: 136, mean age: 58.23) were enrolled in this study. The c.910A>G genetic variant of the XRCC1 gene was determined by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism and DNA sequencing methods. The allele and genotype frequencies indicated statistical differences between EC patients and cancer-free controls. The c.910A>G genetic variant was statistically associated with increased susceptibility to EC [GG vs AA: odds ratio (OR)=1.79, 95% confidence interval (CI)=1.12-2.86, P=0.014; GG vs AG/AA: OR=1.76, 95%CI=1.13-2.75, P=0.013; G vs A: OR=1.25, 95%CI=1.01-1.55, P=0.041]. The allele G and genotype GG could contribute to the increased susceptibility to EC. Our findings suggest that the c.910A>G genetic variant is associated with susceptibility to EC in the Chinese Han population, and might be used as a molecular marker for detecting susceptibility to EC.

The resonant interaction between energetic-particles and tearing mode is an unresolved physics issue at present. It is found for the first time in tokamaks that an unstable tearing mode with slowly rotating m/n  =  2/1 helicity, where m/n represent poloidal/toroidal mode-numbers, interacts with energetic-ions and results in amplitude-bursting/frequency-chirping fishbone-like activities. Nonlinear hybrid kinetic-MHD simulations with M3D-K code prove that the co-passing energetic-ions are responsible for the drive of tearing modes, and the wave-particle resonance condition is satisfied at , where , and are the toroidal, poloidal angular frequencies of energetic-ions and the mode frequency respectively. These findings can help the understanding of tearing mode induced energetic-particle loss and particle acceleration during the tearing mode reconnection in laboratory and space plasmas. Research on beta induced Alfvén eigenmodes (BAEs) driven by energetic ions has been carried out on the HL-2A tokamak. The BAEs can be observed in the cases of being beyond or below unity. The mode frequencies are around 60–95 kHz. The radial mode structures have been detected by the multi-channel microwave reflectometer and soft x-ray arrays. The results suggest that the BAEs are highly localized at the normalized radius of –0.26. Theoretical analyses based on the general fishbone-like dispersion relation and Alfvén mode code support the experimental measurements in both mode frequencies and locations. The BAEs are found to be excited more easily in low electron density discharges. The coexistence of BAEs and reversed shear Alfvén eigenmodes enables the estimation of directly from experiments. A low-frequency electromagnetic mode (LF-mode) has been observed in a stellarator/heliotron device, Heliotron J. The LF-mode is observed only in neutral beam heated plasmas with a co-current, which increases the rotational transform. The observed LF-mode peaks at rho  =  0.86–0.91, where rho  =  r/a is the normalized minor radius. The LF-mode propagates in the ion diamagnetic drift direction, and the poloidal mode number is m ~ 6–8, determined with a combination of Mirnov coil arrays and 2D fast camera measurement. A high m number induces significant Doppler shift from the background ion flow. The frequency is corrected with both E  ×  B rotation and the ion diamagnetic flow. The corrected frequency is almost consistent with the beta-induced Alfvén eigenmode gap evaluated with the STELLGAP code, although very close to the accumulation point. Kinetic Alfvén and pressure gradient driven instabilities are very common in magnetized plasmas, both in space and the laboratory. These instabilities will be easily excited by energetic particles (EPs) and/or pressure gradients in present-day fusion and future burning plasmas. This will not only cause the loss and redistribution of the EPs, but also affect plasma confinement and transport. Alfvénic ion temperature gradient (AITG) instabilities with the frequency and the toroidal mode numbers are found to be unstable in NBI internal transport barrier plasmas with weak shear and low pressure gradients, where and are the frequencies of the beta- and toroidicity-induced Alfvén eigenmodes, respectively. The measured results are consistent with the general fishbone-like dispersion relation and kinetic ballooning mode equation, and the modes become more unstable the smaller the magnetic shear is in low pressure gradient regions. The interaction between AITG activity and EPs also needs to be investigated with greater attention in fusion plasmas, such as ITER (Tomabechi and The ITER Team 1991 Nucl. Effect of the pedestal deposited impurity on the edge-localized mode (ELM) behaviour has been observed and intensively investigated in the HL-2A tokamak. Impurities have been externally seeded by a newly developed laser blow-off (LBO) system. Both mitigation and suppression of ELMs have been realized by LBO-seeded impurity. Measurements have shown that the LBO-seeded impurity particles are mainly deposited in the pedestal region. During the ELM mitigation phase, the pedestal density fluctuation is significantly increased, indicating that the ELM mitigation may be achieved by the enhancement of the pedestal transport. The transition from ELM mitigation to ELM suppression was triggered when the number of the LBO-seeded impurity exceeds a threshold value. During the ELM suppression phase, a harmonic coherent mode (HCM) is excited by the LBO-seeded impurity, and the pedestal density fluctuation is significantly decreased, the electron density is continuously increased, implying that HCM may reduce the pedestal turbulence, suppress ELMs, increase the pedestal pressure, thus extending the Peeling–Ballooning instability limit. The radial profiles of perpendicular flows in the presence of the magnetic island were firstly measured in the HL-2A tokamak by hopping the work frequency of the Doppler backward scattering reflectometer system along with a two-dimensional electron cyclotron emission imaging diagnostic identifying the island locations. It has been observed that across the O-point cut the perpendicular flow is quite small at the center of the island and strongly enhanced around the boundary of the island, resulting in a large increase of the flow shear in the outer half island, while across the X-point cut the flow is almost flat in the whole island region. Meanwhile it was found that the density fluctuations are generally weakened inside the island. The results indicate that both the perpendicular flow and the density fluctuation level are modulated by the naturally rotating tearing mode near the island boundary. The cross-correlation between the perpendicular flows and the oscillating electron temperature further reveals that the modulation of the perpendicular flow occurs mainly inside and in the vicinity of the island. We report an experimental result on the stabilization of the energetic–ion driven internal kink mode (ion fishbone) by electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH), observed for the first time in a toroidal plasma. The mode asserts itself a resistive branch close to the marginal stability point. The resulting fishbone mode depends not only on the injected power but also on the radial deposition location of ECRH, and the instability can be completely suppressed when the injected ECRH power exceeds certain threshold. Analysis by the fishbone dispersion relation, including the resistive effect, suggests that the magnetic Reynolds number plays a key role in the mode stabilization—it weakens the mode growth-rate and enhances the critical energetic–ion beta without changing the energetic–ion population. Multi-scale interactions have been observed recently in the HL-2A core NBI plasmas, including the synchronous coupling between kink mode and tearing mode, nonlinear couplings of TAE/BAE and TM near surface, AITG/KBM/BAE and kink mode near surface, and between kink mode and high-frequency turbulence. Experimental results suggest that several couplings can exist simultaneously, Alfvenic fluctuations have an important contribution to the high-frequency turbulence spectra, and the couplings reveal the electromagnetic character. New mesoscale electric fluctuations (MSEFs) are identified in the edge plasmas of the HL-2A tokamak using multiple Langmuir probe arrays. The MSEFs, resulting from the synchronization and having components of dominant geodesic acoustic mode (GAM) and m/n  =  6/2 potential fluctuations, are found at the same frequency as that of the magnetic fluctuations of m/n  =  6/2 (m and n are poloidal and toroidal mode numbers, respectively). The temporal evolutions of the MSEFs and the magnetic fluctuations clearly show the frequency entrainment and the phase lock between the GAM and the m/n  =  6/2 magnetic fluctuations. The results indicate that GAMs and magnetic fluctuations can transfer energy through nonlinear synchronization. The nonlinear coupling analyses show that the MSEFs couple to turbulence and low frequency zonal flows (LFZFs). This suggests that the MSEFs may contribute to the LFZF formation, reduction of turbulence level, and thus confinement regime transitions. The analysis of the envelope modulation demonstrates that both the MSEFs and the LFZFs modulate the turbulence while the MSEFs are modulated by the LFZFs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Edge localized mode (ELM) is successfully mitigated by helium and deuterium supersonic molecular beam injections (SMBIs) on HL-2A. During the ELM mitigation by SMBIs, gradients of ion temperature (Ti) and electron density are softened in the pedestal. It has been observed that the averaged gradient of the Ti decreases around 44% and the well depth of radial electric field (Er) is reduced by the SMBI during ELM mitigation. Furthermore, at least 20% decrements of Ti have to be attained to achieve a noticeable increase (decrease) of the ELM frequency (amplitude). In addition, the duration of ELM mitigation with helium SMBI is much longer than that with deuterium, likely due to the higher level of recycling neutral gas compared to that of deuterium; in the case of ELM mitigation by helium SMBI, the recovery duration of the density gradient is much shorter (10–20 ms) than that of Ti (up to 40 ms or longer), indicating the importance of the Ti in the ELM mitigation by SMBI. Finally, it has been observed that the Ti is reduced before the beginning of the ELM mitigation, suggesting that the mechanism of the ELM mitigation by SMBI is closely related to the cooling effect. Ion internal transport barriers (iITBs) are first observed in neutral beam injection (NBI) heated plasmas at the HL-2A tokamak. The position of the barrier foot, in the stationary state, coincides with the q  =  1 surface within its uncertainty of measurement. iITBs can develop more easily at the beginning of NBI heating. Also, iITBs are unstable for the sawtooth plasma. Simulations reveal that the thermal diffusivity of ions (χi) inside the barrier can be as low as the neoclassical level. It is observed that the flow shear in the stationary iITB state reaches the level required for suppressing the ion temperature gradient mode instability, which indicates the important role of flow shear in sustaining the iITB. Recent experimental results that are associated with the core-localized (i.e. normalized radius ) Alfvénic modes in HL-2A neutral beam injection (NBI) plasmas with weak magnetic shears are reported. In the different plasma parameter regions, the energetic ions produced by the NBI drive multiple Alfvénic instabilities, such as the toroidal Alfvén eigenmode (TAE), beta-induced Alfvén eigenmode, reversed shear Alfvén eigenmode (RSAE) and fishbone and energetic particle mode (EPM). Here, we focus on the high-frequency RSAE (HFRSAE) and resonant kinetic ballooning mode (rKBM). A group of downward-sweeping frequency coherent modes (HFRSAEs) with 100  <  f  <  500 kHz and n  =  3–7 are often observed with an increase in the edge safety factor, qa. Their measured frequency is more than that of the TAEs, and . The analysis suggests that these modes localize inside the high-order Alfvén eigenmode (AE) gap of the Alfvénic continuum, and their eigenfrequency and eigenfunction depend on the and q-profile. When the core plasma density is more than m−3 and the impurity or supersonic molecular beam enters the bulk plasma, the profiles of the plasma density/pressure peak, and the magnetic shear is weak or negative. In this case, a group of multi-harmonic coherent modes (rKBMs) with 30  <  f  <  150 kHz and n  =  2–9 are observed through multiple diagnostic techniques, and , where is the diamagnetic drift frequency of the thermal ion. It is found that the HFRSAEs can transit into the rKBMs when the density profile suddenly peaks. Neutron monitoring outside the vacuum chamber demonstrates that the HFRSAE and rKBM both degrade the confinement of the energetic ions. The rKBM instabilities also affect the bulk plasma performance. The characteristics of beta-induced Alfvén eigenmode (BAE) at L–I–H transitions have been investigated in the HL-2A experiments for the first time. It is found that a BAE of fBAE ∼ 13.6 kHz coexists with the limit cycle oscillations of fLCO ∼ 2.6 kHz and both disappear after the I–H transition in the discharges with L–I–H transitions. It is also found that the ambient turbulence is modulated by the radial electric field at the BAE frequency and that the level of density fluctuation gradually drops in L–I–H transitions, but it remains invariant in L–I–L ones. These results suggest a possible correlation between the BAE and the L–I–H transitions. The sudden disappearance of the BAE in L–I and I–H transitions has the similar effect of sawtooth crashes on triggering L–I–H transitions in the HL-2 A tokamak. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The dynamics of low–intermediate–high confinement transitions was studied using a four-step Langmuir probe in the HL-2A edge plasma. Two types (dubbed type-Y and type-J) of limit cycle oscillations (LCOs) with opposite temporal ordering between the radial electric field and turbulence were first observed. In type-Y, the turbulence grows first, followed by the localized electric field. In contrast, the electric field leads turbulence in type-J. In addition, the Reynolds stress gradient is found not enough to drive the LCO flow and the three-wave nonlinear coupling is weak there. The continuously increasing amplitude of magnetic fluctuations and the significant correlation between the magnetic fluctuation and the electron pressure gradient indicate an important role of diamagnetic drifts in the L–H transition. Two groups of frequency sweeping modes are observed and interpreted in the HL-2 A plasmas with qmin ∼ 1. The tokamak simulation code calculations indicate the presence of a reversed shear q-profile during the existence of these modes. The mode frequencies lie in between TAE and BAE frequencies, i.e. ωBAE < ω < ωTAE, and these modes are highly localized near qmin, i.e. r/a ∼ 0.25. A group of modes characterized by down-sweeping frequency with qmin decrease due to qmin > 1 and nqmin − m > 0, and another group of modes characterized by up-sweeping frequency with qmin drop, owing to qmin < 1 and nqmin − m < 0 before sawtooth crash. The kinetic Alfvén eigenmode code analysis supports that the down-sweeping modes are kinetic reverse shear Alfvén eigenmodes (KRSAEs), and the up-sweeping modes are RSAEs, which exist in the ideal or kinetic MHD limit. In addition, the down- and up-sweeping RSAEs both have fast nonlinear frequency behaviour in the process of slow frequency sweeping, i.e. producing pitch-fork phenomena.
