We explore the magneto-ionic environment of the isolated radio galaxy B2 0755+37 using detailed imaging of the distributions of Faraday rotation and depolarization over the radio source from Very Large Array observations at 1385,1465 and 4860 MHz and new X-ray data from XMM-Newton. The Rotation Measure (RM) distribution is complex, with evidence for anisotropic fluctuations in two regions. The approaching lobe shows low and uniform RM in an unusual `stripe' along an extension of the jet axis and a linear gradient transverse to this axis over its Northern half. The leading edge of the receding lobe shows arc-like RM structures with sign reversals. Elsewhere, the RM structures are reasonably isotropic. The RM power spectra are well described by cut-off power laws with slopes ranging from 2.1 to 3.2 in different sub-regions. The corresponding magnetic-field autocorrelation lengths, where well-determined, range from 0.25 to 1.4 kpc. It is likely that the fluctuations are mostly produced by compressed gas and field around the leading edges of the lobes. We identify areas of high depolarization around the jets and inner lobes. These could be produced by dense gas immediately surrounding the radio emission containing a magnetic field which is tangled on small scales. We also identify four ways in which the well known depolarization (Faraday depth) asymmetry between jetted and counter-jetted lobes of extended radio sources can be modified by interactions with the surrounding medium.

We present deep, high-resolution imaging of the nearby Fanaroff-Riley Class I (FR I) radio galaxies NGC 193, B2 0206+35, B2 0755+37 and M 84 at frequencies of 4.9 and 1.4 GHz using new and archival multi-configuration observations from the Very Large Array. In addition, we describe lower-resolution observations of B2 0326+39 and a reanalysis of our published images of 3C 296. All of these radio galaxies show twin jets and well-defined lobes or bridges of emission, and we examine the common properties of this class of source. We show detailed images of total intensity, brightness gradient, spectral index, degree of polarization and projected magnetic-field direction. The jet bases are very similar to those in tailed twin-jet sources and show the characteristics of decelerating, relativistic flows. Except on one side of M 84, we find that the jets can be traced at least as far as the ends of the lobes, where they often form structures which we call "caps" with sharp outer brightness gradients. Continuing, but less well collimated flows back into the lobes from the caps can often be identified by their relatively flat spectral indices. The lobes in these radio galaxies are similar in morphology, spectral-index distribution and magnetic-field structure to those in more powerful (FR II) sources, but lack hot-spots or other evidence for strong shocks at the ends of the jets. M 84 may be an intermediate case between lobed and tailed sources, in which one jet does not reach the end of its lobe, but disrupts to form a "bubble".

We present detailed imaging of Faraday rotation and depolarization for the radio galaxies 0206+35, 3C 270, 3C 353 and M 84, based on Very Large Array observations at multiple frequencies in the range 1365 to 8440 MHz. This work suggests a more complex picture of the magneto-ionic environments of radio galaxies than was apparent from earlier work. All of the sources show spectacular banded rotation measure (RM) structures with contours of constant RM perpendicular to the major axes of their radio lobes. We give a comprehensive description of the banded RM phenomenon and present an initial attempt to interpret it as a consequence of interactions between the sources and their surroundings. We show that the material responsible for the Faraday rotation is in front of the radio emission and that the bands are likely to be caused by magnetized plasma which has been compressed by the expanding radio lobes. A two-dimensional magnetic structure in which the field lines are a family of ellipses draped around the leading edge of the lobe can produce RM bands in the correct orientation for any source orientation. We also report the first detections of rims of high depolarization at the edges of the inner radio lobes of M 84 and 3C 270. These are spatially coincident with shells of enhanced X-ray surface brightness, in which both the field strength and the thermal gas density are likely to be increased by compression.

Cerebral autosomal dominant arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and leukoencephalopathy (CADASIL) is an inherited autosomal dominant condition characterized by migrane, recurrent stroke, subcortical dementia, and pseudobulbar palsy. It begins with migraine with aura in -33% of patients. CADASIL is commonly overlooked or misdiagnosed owing to its recent identification. The pathological hallmark of angiopathy is the presence of multiple, small, deep cerebral infarcts, leucoencephalopathy, and nonatherorosclerotic, nonamyloid angiopathy involving mainly small, deep perforating cerebral arteries. Changes also are present in vascular smooth muscle cells and consist in the presence of granular osmiophilic material (GOM). The defective gene in CADASIL is Notch 3, which encodes a large transmembrane receptor. Magnetic resonance imaging shows high intensity signal lesions, often confluent, and areas of cystic degeneration of subcortical white matter and basal ganglia. Diagnostic strategies in CADASIL are matter of discussions because the electron microscopic demonstration of GOM was reported in 100% of symptomatic patients of French authors, but only in 45% of a British study. GOMs are not present in presymptomatic patients.

We determined whole blood lead and cadmium levels, and serum selenium levels in patients with sporadic amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and age- and sex-matched controls. Disability due to the disease directly correlated with lead levels, and there was a strong inverse correlation with selenium concentrations. Lead and selenium concentrations tended to be similar in the cases and controls, both in the study population as a whole and after the removal from the analysis of the patients with the highest degree of disability. In the patients with limited disability, cadmium concentrations were higher than in the controls. Our findings lend limited support to a possible involvement of cadmium, but not lead, in the etiology of sporadic amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and strongly suggest that short-term indicators of exposure are inadequate to investigate the relationship between selenium and the disease.

We report the effects of treatment with plasma-exchange (PE) and intravenous immune globulins (IVIg) in 36 out of 50 patients with Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) recruited by an incidence study in the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy. Comparison of the patients treated with PE and IVIg showed no significant differences in terms of effectiveness in improving the clinical course of GBS: at one month, respectively 11.1% and 25% had recovered, and 55.5% and 58.3% had improved by at least one grade. These results are in agreement with those of the Dutch GBS trial. No relapses were observed in either group. Moreover, our results showed no difference in clinical outcome at 1 and 3 months between the patients receiving only one therapy and those receiving two; a second cycle of therapy did not seem to improve the clinical course of the disease significantly. We conclude that PE and IVIg are both safe and effective therapies for GBS.

Peroneal muscular atrophy (PMA) associated with hereditary spastic paraparesis (HSP) is a nosologically ill-defined disease, which has been classified by Dyck as hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy type V (HMSN V). Nerve biopsy has been rarely reported in this condition. We examined sural nerve biopsies in four patients, demonstrating the following: severe myelinated fiber loss especially of large fibers, with moderate (one case) or prominent (one case) onion bulb formation; selective decrease of large fibers with moderate Schwann cell hyperplasia (one case); normal myelinated fiber population with minimal changes (one case). After reviewing previously reported cases we, conclude that in PMA with HSP sural nerve biopsy may show features either of hypertrophic type of PMA, of neuronal type, or of spinal type; thus, it seems inappropriate to allocate PMA with HSP in a unique subtype of HMSN. In addition, HSP may be not associated with peripheral neuropathy, and thus the classification in the HMSN group may be incongruous. A proper classification of PMA with HSP may be in the "complicated" forms of HSP according to Harding [Lancet I: 1151-1155 (1983)]; however, the nosology of this condition needs to be further elucidated, possibly on the basis of the underlying molecular genetic mechanisms of HSP and PMA.

We carried out a retrospective incidence, prevalence and mortality survey of myasthenia gravis in the province of Reggio Emilia in Northern Italy. Based on 49 patients, the mean incidence per year for the period 1980 through 1994 was 7.8 per 1,000,000. On 31 December 1994 the prevalence rate was 117.5 per 1,000,000 for all patients, either active or recovered (50 cases in a population of 427,493) and 103.4 per 1,000,000 for the active disease. In the 15-year period 1980-1994 the average mortality rate was 1.0 per 1,000,000 per year. The average age at onset was 44.6 +/- 21.0, and the average age at the time of prevalence determination was 51.1 +/- 19.6 for the active disease. At the time of diagnosis, 21 patients (36.8%) were classed in group I according to Osserman's criteria, 31 in group II (54.4%), (19 in group II-A and 12 in group II-B), and the other 5 (8.8%) in group III. Of all the prevalence cases, 6 (12%) were in remission without therapy and 6 with therapy, while most of the others 16 (32%) were classed in group I, 15 (30%) in group II, and 1 (2%) in group III. Thymectomy was performed in 20 patients (35.1%), 12 (21%) had thymoma (malignant in 4 cases), 6 had thymic hyperplasia while in two patients thymic histology was normal. The relation the grade of Osserman's scale at the time of incidence and the presence of thymoma were significant. Higher grades of Osserman's scale were associated were malignant thymoma. Furthermore the relationship between thymectomy and the grade of Osserman's scale at the date of prevalence was significant for the presence of lower grades of Osserman's scale in the patients submitted to thymectomy.

A group of 72 term infants with significant respiratory complications were compared with 11,428 term infants delivered during the same time period and without respiratory morbidity. Compared with controls, the study group had a higher incidence of postdatism (36 versus 7%), intrauterine growth retardation (33 versus 8%), meconium-stained amniotic fluid (AF) (90 versus 9%), fetal heart rate (FHR) abnormalities upon admission to labor and delivery (58 versus 7%), and low 5-minute Apgar scores (46 versus 1.4%). Even in the presence of normal intrapartum FHR and 5-minute Apgar scores, infants with meconium-stained AF had an incidence of respiratory complications 100 times higher than those with clear AF. Of infants with a low 5-minute Apgar score at birth, only 20% went on to develop respiratory complications. The remaining 80% had a significantly lower incidence of postdatism, intrauterine growth retardation, and meconium-stained AF.

We report 31 cases of herpes zoster (HZ) with neurological complications: 14 with cranial nerve deficits, 1 with cranial nerve deficit associated with segmental motor disorder, 3 with segmental motor deficits, 2 with meningoencephalitis, 2 with meningoencephalitis associated with cranial neuropathy or myelitis, 2 with meningitis, 2 with hemiplegia contralateral to the ophthalmic HZ. 1 with hemiplegia and motor deficit and finally 1 with hemiplegia and a cranial neuropathy. Smoking was the putative risk factor in 53% of our patients together with diabetes, which has already been mentioned in the literature. We frequently observed more than one complication in succession (19.3%) that could not easily be related to the cutaneous distribution. Acyclovir had no demonstrable positive effects on neurological complication in our patients.

The supplementary information, which is necessary to solve it, is given by the knowledge of ∫ R n u ( t , x , y ) d μ ( y ) for every ( t , x ) , where u is the solution of the parabolic problem, and μ is a complex valued Borel measure in R n .

We study an abstract inverse problem of reconstruction of the solution of a semilinear mixed integrodifferential parabolic problem, together with a convolution kernel. The supplementary information required to solve the problem also involves a convolution term with the same unknown kernel. The abstract results are applicable to the identification of a memory kernel in a strongly damped wave equation using a flux condition.

This review paper is devoted to the numerical analysis of abstract differential equations in Banach spaces. Most of the finite difference, finite element, and projection methods can be considered from the point of view of general approximation schemes (see, e.g., [207,210,211] for such a representation). Results obtained for general approximation schemes make the formulation of concrete numerical methods easier and give an overview of methods which are suitable for different classes of problems. The qualitative theory of differential equations in Banach spaces is presented in many brilliant papers and books. We can refer to the bibliography [218], which contains about 3000 references. Unfortunately, no books or reviews on general approximation theory appear for differential equations in abstract spaces during last 20 years. Any information on the subject can be found in the original papers only. It seems that such a review is the first step towards describing a complete picture of discretization methods for abstract differential equations in Banach spaces. In Sec. 2 we describe the general approximation scheme, different types of convergence of operators, and the relation between the convergence and the approximation of spectra. Also, such a convergence analysis can be used if one considers elliptic problems, i.e., the problems which do not depend on time. Section 3 contains a complete picture of the theory of discretization of semigroups on Banach spaces. It summarizes Trotter–Kato and Lax–Richtmyer theorems from the general and common point of view and related problems. The approximation of ill-posed problems is considered in Sec. 4, which is based on the theory of approximation of local C-semigroups. Since the backward Cauchy problem is very important in applications and admits a stochastic noise, we also consider approximation using a stochastic regularization. Such an approach was never considered in the literature before to the best of our knowledge. In Sec. 5, we present discrete coercive inequalities for abstract parabolic equations in Cτn([0, T ];En), C τn([0, T ];En), L p τn([0, T ];En), and Bτn([0, T ];C (Ωh)) spaces.
