Enhanced Rock Weathering (ERW) is a promising scalable and cost-effective Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) strategy with significant environmental and agronomic co-benefits. A major barrier to large-scale implementation of ERW is a robust Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) framework. To successfully quantify the amount of carbon dioxide removed by ERW, MRV must be accurate, precise, and cost-effective. Here, we outline a mass-balance-based method where analysis of the chemical composition of soil samples is used to track in-situ silicate rock weathering. We show that signal-to-noise issues of in-situ soil analysis can be mitigated by using isotope-dilution mass spectrometry to reduce analytical error. We implement a proof-of-concept experiment demonstrating the method in controlled mesocosms. In our experiment, basalt rock feedstock is added to soil columns containing the cereal crop Sorghum bicolor at a rate equivalent to 50 t ha$^{-1}$. Using our approach, we calculate rock weathering corresponding to an average initial CDR value of 1.44 +/- 0.27 tCO$_2$eq ha$^{-1}$ from our experiments after 235 days, within error of an independent estimate calculated using conventional elemental budgeting of reaction products. Introduction Heart failure (HF) is a complex clinical syndrome. Accurate risk stratification and early diagnosis of HF are challenging as its signs and symptoms are non-specific. We propose to address this global challenge by developing the STRATIFYHF artificial intelligence-driven decision support system (DSS), which uses novel analytical methods in determining the risk, diagnosis and prognosis of HF. The primary aim of the present study is to collect prospective clinical data to validate the STRATIFYHF DSS (in terms of diagnostic accuracy, sensitivity and specificity) as a tool to predict the risk, diagnosis and progression of HF. The secondary outcomes are the demographic and clinical predictors of risk, diagnosis and progression of HF.Methods and analysis STRATIFYHF is a prospective, multicentre, longitudinal study that will recruit up to 1600 individuals (n=800 suspected/at risk of HF and n=800 diagnosed with HF) aged ≥45 years old, with up to 24 months of follow-up observations. Individuals suspected of HF will be divided into two categories based on current definitions and predefined inclusion criteria. All participants will have their medical history recorded, along with data on physical examination (signs and symptoms), blood tests including serum natriuretic peptides levels, ECG and echocardiogram results, as well as demographic, socioeconomic and lifestyle data, and use of complete novel technologies (cardiac output response to stress test and voice recognition biomarkers). All measurements will be recorded at baseline and at 12-month follow-up, with medical history and hospitalisation also recorded at 24-month follow-up. Cardiovascular MRI assessment will be completed in a subset of participants (n=20–40) from eligible clinical centres only at baseline. Each clinical centre will recruit a subset of participants (n=30) who will complete a 6-month home-based monitoring of clinical characteristics and accelerometry (wrist-worn monitor) to determine the feasibility and acceptability of the STRATIFYHF mobile application. Focus groups and semistructured interviews will be conducted with up to 15 healthcare professionals and up to 20 study participants (10 at risk of HF and 10 diagnosed with HF) to explore the needs of patients and healthcare professionals prior to the development of the STRATIFYHF DSS and to evaluate the acceptability of this mobile application.Ethics and dissemination Ethical approval has been granted by the East Midlands - Leicester Central Research Ethics Committee (24/EM/0101). Dissemination activities will include journal publications and presentations at conferences, as well as development of training materials and delivery of focused training on the STRATIFYHF DSS and mobile application. We will develop and propose policy guidelines for integration of the STRATIFYHF DSS and mobile application into the standard of care in the HF care pathway.Trial registration number NCT06377319.

Este artículo continúa con el análisis de la investigación “Mujer, conflicto armado y paz: un ejercicio de memoria individual y colectiva para la reconstrucción del tejido social en Caldas, Sucre y Chocó”, en el marco del programa Colombia Científica. Particularmente se discute el caso de las mujeres afro del departamento de Chocó (Colombia), en los corregimientos de Basurú en Istmina y Acosó en Condoto. La información se desarrolló a partir de la reconstrucción de memoria individual y colectiva con hombres y mujeres de las comunidades por medio de relatos biográficos, entrevistas y grupos focales en relación con los hechos vividos por la mujer antes, durante y después del conflicto armado. Como resultado se propone la interseccionalidad como postulado necesario para comprender la realidad de las mujeres afro desde una lectura integral del conflicto armado, de la mano del estudio a las respuestas de las comunidades a este conflicto enmarcadas en los distintos tipos de resiliencia y resistencia.

Basophilic granulocytes, containing and releasing histamine after a specific allergy stimulation, are directly involved in IgE-mediated allergic reactions. CD63 is a transmembrane protein of secretory lysosomes of basophils and its upregulation is related with the release of histamine to the extracellular space during IgE-mediated allergic reactions. Basophil activation test (BAT) measures the activation of circulating basophils upon the in vitro stimulation of living blood cells with specific allergens. Such a test is particularly safe and reproducible and has recently emerged as a new promising diagnostic tool for allergic diseases.BAT can be used to diagnose food allergy and represents a promising alternative to oral food challenge tests, especially in children as it is less invasive, safer, and cheaper than the gold standard tests. As a biomarker of tolerance and reactivity, it is also useful to monitor natural resolution and clinical response to immune-modulatory treatments. Regarding drug allergies, BAT is even the only possible applicable diagnostic tool for allergy reactions to some drugs, because of the lack of alternative test, or given that those commonly used are unreliable, or equivocal. Additionally, BAT allows to screen patients with more active urticarial and identify Hymenoptera-allergic patients with negative venom-specific immunoglobulin (Ig)E. In respiratory allergic diseases, BAT can facilitate the diagnosis of local allergic rhinitis and evaluate basophil allergen sensitivity in allergic asthma. Although IgE-sensitization in allergic asthma is usually demonstrated by skin prick test and specific IgE, those tests do not predict the clinical allergy contribution to asthma pathogenesis. To date, the potential of BAT in the diagnostic work-up of allergic diseases is well established, but a better standardization of its use is needed. This narrative review summarizes the state-of-the-art BAT technology and applications in pediatric allergic diseases, focusing on immune-related mechanisms and the BAT real clinical utility.

Building energy efficiency, consumption and comfort are aspects to be evaluated in the energy simulation of buildings (BES). However, their results deviate from reality leading to the need to improve their accuracy through calibration. In this regard, a rural house located in a cold climate at more than 3000 meters above sea level, is energetically modeled with its subsequent calibration and evaluation of thermal comfort. The study is developed in four stages, starting with the monitoring of climatological variables and followed by the house energy modeling. Subsequently, manual and iterative calibration is conducted by means of statistical comparison and scatter plots. In this way, a model with more than 80% accuracy between monitored and simulated data is achieved. Based on the previously calibrated model, the thermal comfort is evaluated using different glazing technologies and then, the number of hours for two levels of thermal sensation are evaluated (comfortable and not comfortable). For this purpose, statistical methods such as predicted mean vote (PMV) and predicted percentage of dissatisfied (PPD) are used, which are included in the Design Builder software. This study identified that single bronze glazing technology increased thermal comfort hours by 14.2% with respect to the case study, allowing the development of a methodology that improves thermal comfort through passive heating in rural dwellings in cold climates.

The Soprintendenza Speciale di Roma is developing a new application to set up a ‘Map of the Archaeological Potential of Rome’ within the SITAR platform. The research group is developing a solid system for the Rome Archaeological Potential Map, which is based on the great documentary heritage included in the system, i.e. 25,000 archaeological partitions and over 10,000 cores collected and processed. With a view to a participatory philosophy, this tool will be implemented through the input of data entered by individual users of the platform. The final elaboration will soon be available on the SITAR webgis.

Artemisinin-based treatments (ACTs) are the first therapy currently used to treat malaria produced by Plasmodium falciparum. However, in recent years, increasing evidence shows that some strains of P. falciparum are less susceptible to ACT in the Southeast Asian region. A data reanalysis of several omics approaches currently available about parasites of P. falciparum that have some degree of resistance to ACT was carried out. The data used were from transcriptomics and metabolomics studies. One mitochondrial carrier of the parasite possibly involved in the mechanisms of tolerance to oxidative stress was modeled and subjected to molecular dockings with citrate and oxoglutarate. An increase in glutathione production was detected, changing the direction of the flux of metabolites in the tricarboxylic acid cycle and boosting the glucose consumed. The models of the mitochondrial carrier, called PfCOCP, show that it may be important in transporting citrate and oxoglutarate from the mitochondrial matrix to the cytosol. If so, it may allow the parasite to tolerate the oxidative stress produced by artemisinin. This in-silico analysis shows that P. falciparum may tolerate artemisinin’s oxidative stress through metabolic changes not reported before, showing the need for further experimental research on the many metabolic aspects linked to this phenotype.

IntroductionAsymmetric electromyographic (EMG) activity during teeth clenching has been linked to cognitive impairment, as evaluated by the Spinnler-Tognoni matrices test, and to asymmetric pupil size (anisocoria). Anisocoria indicates an asymmetric Locus Coeruleus activity, leading to an asymmetric hemispheric excitability worsening cognitive performance. Bite splint wearing corrects EMG asymmetry, reduces anisocoria and improves cognitive performance. This study explores the possible effect of EMG asymmetry on oculomotor behavior during text reading.MethodsIn subjects showing different degrees of EMG asymmetry during clenching, the number and duration of fixation periods during a reading task, performed under two different occlusal conditions were analyzed. The first lecture was executed with a dental impression (imprint) interposed between the dental arches (corrected condition) and the second one with the arches in direct contact (habitual condition), without clenching effort. The imprint reduced the EMG asymmetries during clenching.ResultsIn both occlusal conditions, total reading time correlated with duration of fixations, but not with their number. An inverse relation was observed between the number of fixations and their duration across individuals. Fixation frequency and duration were positively and negatively correlated with the amplitude of EMG asymmetry, respectively. Differently, total reading time was not related to the EMG asymmetry. When switching from the corrected to the habitual condition, an increase in the number of fixations and a reduction in their duration was observed, while total reading time could be either increased or decreased. An increased fixation frequency was observed in most of the subjects, while a reduced duration only among individuals with shorter reading times in habitual condition.DiscussionIn the habitual condition, EMG asymmetry influences reading patterns (more saccades/shorter fixations, less saccades/longer fixations) in our sample. The changes in text reading behavior elicited by occlusal correction can be explained by assuming that occlusal disharmony negatively interferes with the reading task by increasing the number of saccades necessary for text scanning. This finding may also indicate an increased difficulty in processing of visual information. The potential involvement of trigeminal pathways in the relation between occlusal factors and oculomotor control is discussed.

Abstract As is known, the existence of a small noncommutativity between coordinates would generate nonlocal self-interactions in the electromagnetic theory. To explore some consequences of this effect on the propagation of photons we consider Moyal space half-filled with a static and homogeneous electric field and analyze electromagnetic fluctuations on top of this step-like background. This paper is focused on interpreting the way in which twenty-first-century refugee writing in Canada is currently approached critically and theoretically. It proposes new reading strategies that contest the influence of nation-state powers over literary production deployed with an aesthetics of cosmopolitanism. In particular, this article takes up refugee writing by Kim Thúy and Sharon Bala, respectively, in order to show how its search for a “Good Life” leads to the transformation of the characters’ subjectivity. This transformation responds to an epistemological shift which confronts issues of Western complicity in foreign human rights abuses and poses questions about alternative epistemologies to Eurocentric notions of healing and trauma recovery in the aftermath of mass violence.

The practice of transporting a patient affected by a Highly Transmissible Disease (HTD) with a high risk of fatal evolution using biocontainment isolators requires careful planning and preparation. To date, there is only limited literature regarding aeromedical transport, most of which is military-derived, and it does not address patient transfer by road vehicles. To standardize these practices, or at least some of their most critical aspects, we tried to schematize a few of the improvements each author implemented during their practices as a scaffold, which could eventually be based on operative protocols. In particular, we focused on the series of actions that needed to be performed and planned to guarantee the safety of both the patient and operators during the entire duration of the operations.

BackgroundWrist-worn inertial sensors are used in digital health for evaluating mobility in real-world environments. Preceding the estimation of spatiotemporal gait parameters within long-term recordings, gait detection is an important step to identify regions of interest where gait occurs, which requires robust algorithms due to the complexity of arm movements. While algorithms exist for other sensor positions, a comparative validation of algorithms applied to the wrist position on real-world data sets across different disease populations is missing. Furthermore, gait detection performance differences between the wrist and lower back position have not yet been explored but could yield valuable information regarding sensor position choice in clinical studies. ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to validate gait sequence (GS) detection algorithms developed for the wrist position against reference data acquired in a real-world context. In addition, this study aimed to compare the performance of algorithms applied to the wrist position to those applied to lower back–worn inertial sensors. MethodsParticipants with Parkinson disease, multiple sclerosis, proximal femoral fracture (hip fracture recovery), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and congestive heart failure and healthy older adults (N=83) were monitored for 2.5 hours in the real-world using inertial sensors on the wrist, lower back, and feet including pressure insoles and infrared distance sensors as reference. In total, 10 algorithms for wrist-based gait detection were validated against a multisensor reference system and compared to gait detection performance using lower back–worn inertial sensors. ResultsThe best-performing GS detection algorithm for the wrist showed a mean (per disease group) sensitivity ranging between 0.55 (SD 0.29) and 0.81 (SD 0.09) and a mean (per disease group) specificity ranging between 0.95 (SD 0.06) and 0.98 (SD 0.02). The mean relative absolute error of estimated walking time ranged between 8.9% (SD 7.1%) and 32.7% (SD 19.2%) per disease group for this algorithm as compared to the reference system. Gait detection performance from the best algorithm applied to the wrist inertial sensors was lower than for the best algorithms applied to the lower back, which yielded mean sensitivity between 0.71 (SD 0.12) and 0.91 (SD 0.04), mean specificity between 0.96 (SD 0.03) and 0.99 (SD 0.01), and a mean relative absolute error of estimated walking time between 6.3% (SD 5.4%) and 23.5% (SD 13%). Performance was lower in disease groups with major gait impairments (eg, patients recovering from hip fracture) and for patients using bilateral walking aids. ConclusionsAlgorithms applied to the wrist position can detect GSs with high performance in real-world environments. Those periods of interest in real-world recordings can facilitate gait parameter extraction and allow the quantification of gait duration distribution in everyday life. Our findings allow taking informed decisions on alternative positions for gait recording in clinical studies and public health. Understanding the dynamics of coral recruitment and post-settlement is fundamental to a better comprehension of coral reef dynamics and recovery. We studied the abundance and survivorship of coral recruits and juveniles together with benthic dynamics at a scale of months and centimeters in Playa Mero reef, a disturbed reef in Morrocoy National Park. For this, we used photogrammetry to monitor eight permanent 50x50 cm quadrats haphazardly deployed every 3–4 months over 18 months. Juveniles and recruits of Agaricia spp. were at least four times more abundant than reef builders such as Orbicella spp. A distance-based linear model showed that rugosity, macroalgae, coral cover, and sand were the most important benthic variables and predicted up to 46% of the spatial and temporal variation of recruit and juvenile corals. The mortality of juvenile corals was higher than net recruitment rates, and only a limited number of genera such as Agariciids, Colpophyllia, Porites, and Scolymia were observed as recruits. Using a logit model, we also found a positive relationship between the mean growth rate and survivorship of juvenile corals (Nagelkerke R2= 0.67). We concluded the lack of recruitment of large reef builders, and the rapid mortality of a limited number of juvenile species, might be a sign of a coral community's failure to increase coral cover.

The purpose of this article is to evaluate the performance of a prototype parabolic trough collector for three proposed scenarios, where geometric designs with optical characteristics are tested according to the appropriate technological paradigm; low cost of maintenance and implementation, intensive local labor, materials and resources of the implementation area. The device was developed by the Energy, Automation and Control Systems Research Group GISEAC of the Unidades Tecnológicas de Santander for low-cost water heating; using materials and labor for its fabrication easily available locally. Monte Carlo ray tracing methodology was applied using the open-access software SolTrace and Tonatiuh. To select the geometric scenario to be simulated, the edge angle and the width of the primary reflection system of the device were varied. The results obtained showed that the aperture of the parabola has a direct impact on the drop in the concentration ratio (CR) percentage value and the performance of the prototype.

Airflow limitation is closely associated with smoking exposure. Smoking could also interfere with lipid metabolism.Aim: To determine the respiratory functional and metabolic changes after smoking cessation in smokers in the short term.Methods: All patients were current smokers. They were assessed by spirometry and questionnaires such as COPD assessment test(CAT), modified Medical Research Council (mMRC) test for dyspnea, Fagestrom’s test for nicotine dependence. Exhaled CO was detected in order to evaluate smoking exposure and smoking cessation (normal value< 7 ppm). A blood sampling was eventually taken for vitamin D and cholesterol assay. All patients underwent therapy with counselling and varenicline as first-line treatment according to its schedule. Detection time: at baseline and one month after smoking cessation.Results: All patients quit smoking during treatment. The mean age was 62 with a prevalence of males. The analysis revealed the following mean values at baseline: CAT mean score was 15, pack-years 35.5, Fagestrom’s Test mean score 5.0. The West’s value was 8.5, whereas Body mass index (BMI) was 25.5.Cigarette daily consumption mean value was 22.5. The comparison before and at follow up one month after smoking cessation about functional and metabolic parameters, show us the following results: FEV 1 was increased by 200 mL (p< 0.02), FEF 25/75 was improved as well as mMRC test. The eCO was dropped to as low as 8 ppM. Interestingly the vitamin D level was increased from 25 to 28 ng/mL without any support therapy. The cholesterol total level was reduced and CAT value and DLCO were also significantly improved.Conclusion: Quit smoking is useful to improve symptoms, respiratory function and metabolic parameters in the short term.Keywords: airflow limitation, smoking cessation, lipid metabolism

Abstract Background Persistent headache is a frequent symptom after coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and there is currently limited knowledge about its clinical spectrum and predisposing factors. A subset of patients may be experiencing new daily persistent headache (NDPH) after COVID-19, which is among the most treatment-refractory primary headache syndromes. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional study in Latin America to characterize individuals with persistent headache after severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection and to identify factors associated with NDPH. Participants over 18 years old who tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 infection and reported persistent headache among their symptoms completed an online survey that included demographics, past medical history, persistent headache clinical characteristics, and COVID-19 vaccination status. Based on participants’ responses, NDPH diagnostic criteria were used to group participants into NDPH and non-NDPH groups. Participant data was summarized by descriptive statistics. Student’s t and Mann–Whitney U tests were used according to the distribution of quantitative variables. For categorical variables, Pearson’s chi-square and Fisher’s exact tests were used according to the size of expected frequencies. Binomial logistic regression using the backward stepwise selection method was performed to identify factors associated with NDPH. Results Four hundred and twenty-one participants from 11 Latin American countries met the inclusion criteria. One in four participants met the NDPH diagnostic criteria. The mean age was 40 years, with most participants being female (82%). Over 90% of the participants reported having had mild/moderate COVID-19. Most participants had a history of headache before developing COVID-19 (58%), mainly migraine type (32%). Flows through porous media can carry suspended and dissolved materials. These sediments may deposit inside the pore-space and alter its geometry. In turn, the changing pore structure modifies the preferential flow paths, resulting in a strong coupling between structural modifications and transport characteristics. Here, we compare two different models that lead to channel obstruction as a result of subsequent deposition. The first model randomly obstructs pore-throats across the porous medium, while in the second model the pore-throat with the highest flow rate is always obstructed first. By subsequently closing pores, we find that the breakdown of the permeability follows a power-law scaling, whose exponent depends on the obstruction model. The pressure jumps that occur during the obstruction process also follow a power-law distribution with the same universal scaling exponent as the avalanche size distribution of invasion percolation, independent of the model. This result suggests that the clogging processes and invasion percolation may belong to the same universality class., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

BackgroundChagas disease (CD), caused by Trypanosoma cruzi, is a global health concern with expanding geographical reach. Despite improved and accessible test methods, diagnosing CD in its various phases remains complex. The existence of clinical scenarios, including immunosuppressed patients, transplant-related CD reactivation, transfusion-associated cases, and orally transmitted acute infections, adds to the diagnostic challenge. No singular gold standard test exists for all phases, and recommendations from PAHO and the CDC advocate for the use of two serological methods for chronic CD diagnosis, while molecular methods or direct parasite detection are suggested for the acute phase. Given the complexity in the diagnostic landscape of CD, the goal of this scoping review is to characterize available diagnostic tests for CD in the clinical laboratory.MethodsA literature search in PubMed was conducted on studies related to In vitro diagnosis (IVD) in humans published in English, Spanish, or Portuguese language as of 28 August 2023, and extended backward with no predefined time frame. Studies underwent title and abstract screening, followed by full-text review. Studies included were classified based on the diagnostic method used. Test methods were grouped as serological, molecular, and other methods. Performance, availability, and regulatory status were also characterized.ResultsOut of 85 studies included in the final review, 115 different tests were identified. These tests comprised 89 serological test types, 21 molecular test types, and 5 other test methods. Predominant serological tests included ELISA (38 studies, 44.70%), Rapid tests (19 studies, 22.35%), and chemiluminescence (10 studies, 11.76%). Among molecular tests, Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) assays were notable. Twenty-eight tests were approved globally for IVD or donor testing, all being serological methods. Molecular assays lacked approval for IVD in the United States, with only European and Colombian regulatory acceptance.Discussion and conclusionSerological tests, specifically ELISAs, remain the most used and commercially available diagnostic methods. This makes sense considering that most Chagas disease diagnoses occur in the chronic phase and that the WHO gold standard relies on 2 serological tests to establish the diagnosis of chronic Chagas. ELISAs are feasible and relatively low-cost, with good performance with sensitivities ranging between 77.4% and 100%, and with specificities ranging between 84.2% and 100%. Molecular methods allow the detection of specific variants but rely on the parasite’s presence, which limits their utility to parasitemia levels. Depending on the PCR method and the phase of the disease, the sensitivity ranged from 58.88 to 100% while the mean specificity ranged from 68.8% to 100%. Despite their performance, molecular testing remains mostly unavailable for IVD use. Only 3 molecular tests are approved for IVD, which are available only in Europe. Six commercial serological assays approved by the FDA are available for blood and organ donor screening. Currently, there are no guidelines for testing CD oral outbreaks. Although more evidence is needed on how testing methods should be used in special clinical scenarios, a comprehensive approach of clinical assessment and diagnostics tests, including not IVD methods, is required for an accurate CD diagnosis.
