The results of our preliminary studies indicated that the diets of predatory fishes can be bioindicators of faunistic changes in ecosystems and indirectly of changes taking place in aquatic environments in the Pomeranian Bay. We examined the diet composition of top predators Gadus morhua, Sander lucioperca, Perca fluviatilis, and the mesopredator Neogobius melanostomus. The diet composition of the perch, pikeperch, and round goby in the Pomeranian Bay was analyzed for the first time. Our findings indicated that perch, an euryphagous species, is the best potential bioindicator because it is present in the area studied most of the year and has a low to moderate feeding index (FI). Baltic cod, also an euryphagous species, could be a good bioindicator in the areas where it is abundant and occurs frequently, but not in the Pomeranian Bay, where it is caught mainly in the fall. Round goby, which is present in the area studied and had a low FI, is a stenophagous species that preys mainly on benthic species, while pikeperch had a very high FI and the least number of prey species in its diet. In 2022-2023 specimens of A. fallax are recorded for the first time in approximately 17 years in Szczecin Lagoon. We collected 11 specimens of juveniles, 9 premature and mature females, and 9 premature and mature males (20.3-40.7 cm of total length, aged from 1+ to 4+). The 2+ aged fish was slightly dominated (34.5% of the whole sample). Females in the Szczecin Lagoon were ready to spawn in the age of 3+ and 4+ years, while males partly in 2+, and in the age of 3+ and 4+. Fulton's condition factor of this fish was 0.93±0.14 and Clark's 0.78±0.14. Analysis of correlations between the total length and individual weight of fish revealed that the growth of A. fallax was allometric (b < 3.0). The range of gonadosomatic index (GSI) was 0.12-26.59%, while the mean of the absolute and relative fecundity was 58,756 eggs per female and 139,650 eggs per kilogram of body weight. The obtained results indicate the occurrence of an anadromous population of Alosa fallax in the studied water areas. However, there is still a need to obtain detailed information on the population status and the biology of A. fallax in these areas in order to designate special conservation areas (SACs) for their protection, especially taking into account spawning habitats. Ballast water represents a significant vector for the transfer of aquatic organisms and chemical pollutants. Although various groups of transported microorganisms can have a negative impact on native species of aquatic fauna, the available literature usually focuses on larger organisms. This is important because microorganisms cause changes in the balanced aquatic environment, including a stable trophic pyramid. The objectives of this study were twofold: (i) to determine the seasonal changes in the microbiota of the ballast water of long- and short-range ships entering the southern Baltic port, with a focus on fish pathogenic microorganisms and (ii) to potentially assess the threat to the ichthyofauna caused by the introduction of these microorganisms into the aquatic environment. The analytical results demonstrated notable variability in microbial density across the samples, contingent on the distance traversed by the ships. The samples of ballast water collected in autumn exhibited the highest microbial density compared to those collected in spring and summer. The samples contained yeast (1.00–2.98 log cfu/mL), mold (1.30–3.26 log cfu/mL), and bacteria (2.18–4.61 log cfu/mL), including amylolytic bacteria (0.95–3.53 log cfu/mL), lipolytic bacteria (0.70–2.93 log cfu/mL), and proteolytic bacteria (0.70–2.39 log cfu/mL). The most prevalent were the Pseudomonas bacteria (0.48–4.40 log cfu/mL), including Pseudomonas fluorescens (0.20–2.60 log cfu/mL. The port waters in spring and summer were primarily characterized by the presence of bacteria belonging to the genus Bacillus. Additionally, the samples exhibited the presence of Intestinimonas, Oceanobacillus, and Virgibacillus bacteria. The short-range vessel samples were populated primarily by bacteria belonging to the genus Bordetella, accompanied by Oligella, Brackiella, and Basilea oraz Derxia, while the ballast water of long-range ships contained mainly Acholeplasma and Clostridium, accompanied by Bacillus, Peptosteptococcus, Intestinibacter, Terrisporobacter, Anaerobacillis, Anaerofustis, Oxobacter, and Listeria. A phylogenetic analysis of the bacteria recorded in the ballast water revealed the presence of species, including Bordetella and Acholeplasma, which can facilitate the colonization of aquatic organisms by pathogenic entities. The results of this study showed that despite the use of water treatment systems on ships, ballast waters carry microorganisms that can negatively impact new environments, including local fish populations (e.g., P. fluorescens). These observations point to the need for further research on the effectiveness of ballast water management systems used to date to minimize the environmental impact of organisms carried in ships' ballast water to preserve natural resources and environmental sustainability in port waters. Minimizing human exposure to arsenic (As) and ensuring an adequate dietary intake of selenium (Se) are significant issues in research on food sources. This study measured the content of As and Se in the muscles, gills, liver, and gonads of the fish round goby (Neogobius melanostomus) to assess the benefits and risks associated with their consumption. This was achieved by using dietary reference intake (DRI), estimated daily intake (EDI), target hazard quotient (THQ), and carcinogenic risk (CR). The elements were analyzed by atomic absorption spectrometry. The mean concentrations of As and Se (in μg kg−1 wet weight) were 25.1 and 161.4 in muscle, 58.8 and 367.4 in liver, 47.4 and 635.3 in gonads, and 16.4 and 228.5 in gills, respectively. Arsenic in the muscle portion of fish accounted for up to 0.5% of the DRI, while Se constituted approximately 30% of the DRI. The EDI values were below the reference oral dose (RfD). The THQ were much below the permissible levels (THQ < 1), and the CR were at least within the permissible limit (CR < 10−4). With regard to the As content, round goby muscles can be deemed safe for consumers. They may also be a valuable source of Se in the human diet. Monitoring studies of ichthyofauna, in particular non-indigenous species, are an important element of research on aquatic ecosystems. This information is essential for modelling population growth and predicting rates of expansion, quantifying ecological impacts and assessing the efficacy of removal and control strategies. Actually, the most compelling fish invasion in Polish freshwaters is arguably the accidental introduction of the topmouth gudgeon (Pseudorasbora parva). Age and lengths structure, condition factor and growth rate of the invasive populations of the topmouth gudgeon from small Polish rivers was examined. The samples were collected from the rivers: Molnica (n = 41), Myśla (n = 21) and Wardynka (n = 101) soon after the invasion was recorded (2017). Estimated ages of topmouth gudgeon ranged from 1+ to 3+ for the Myśla River, from 1+ do 4+ for the Molnica River, and from 1+ to 5+ for the Wardynka River. The fish from the Molnica River was characterised by the lowest total and standard length (TL, SL), weight, and highest condition. The results of back-calculations and the parameters of von Bertalanffy’s growth equation revealed distinct disproportions in the standard length (mm) in individual age groups (Molnica River: Lt = 54.94 [1 – e−0.68885 (1 − 0.003404)], Myśla River: Lt = 55.39 [1 – e−0.74921 (1 – 0.030962)], Wardynka River: Lt = 66.33 [1 – e−0.69348 (1 – 0.369505)]). The introduction of the topmouth gudgeon occurred in the upper and medium sectors of small rivers, but in subsequent years the species migrated to new sites further downstream and this may have affected the native ichthyofauna.

The round goby (Neogobius melanostomus Pallas, 1811) is one of the most invasive fish species in the world, including Poland. 300 fish of this species were collected in the waters of Szczecin lagoon between 2010 and 2014 and examination of the size, sex and age structures of the population and of the condition of the fish was performed. Total length and standard length of all the collected fish amounted to 149.2 mm (±42.21) and 128.1 mm (±38.65), respectively. The age structure of the fish consisted of nine generations, with clear prevalence of the fish aged 3+ and 4+. Mean values of condition factors for the whole fish sample amounted to 0.20 (±0.02). However, no statistically significant differences in particular years were observed (ANOVA, p > 0.05), but the condition of the fish between 2010 and 2011 was slightly higher than between 2013 and 2014. The obtained results indicate that the Szczecin Lagoon environment provides this species with favourable living conditions and it can be stipulated that the quantity of individuals of this fish species will increase.

The paper presents a proposal for the treatment of river water based on expanded clay (ceramsite). It is a lightweight mineral aggregate containing components relative to phosphorus adsorption (calcium, iron, manganese, aluminum). A pilot plant on a fractional technical scale was built on a nutrient rich (phosphorus up to 0.4 mg dm−3, nitrogen up to 10.0 mg dm−3), small (mean annual flow about 0.04 m3 s−1), natural watercourse (Młynówka River, a tributary of the Otok Channel, Noteć basin, the municipality of Strzelce Krajeńskie). The monitoring included quantitative and qualitative measurements of the water stream in 2014-2015. On the basis of the examinations, the calculated effectiveness of ceramsite filters in removing major contaminants from water was: for total nitrogen 5-6%, phosphorus 12-16%, and for suspensions 17-29%. The effectiveness of the treatment is highly influenced by hydraulic load, so this type application on a full-scale should occupy a sufficiently large volume. Taking into account simplicity of performance, ease of operation and low cost of construction and maintenance, such pretreatment plants based on expanded clay would seem to be a promising tool for the protection of surface waters in catchments of small rivers and streams.

Watercourses serve the needs of agriculture in certain sections and are subject to strong anthropopressure. When agriculture prevails in the catchment, it often has abundant vegetation, macrophytes in particular, and the bottom is covered by a substantial layer of silt. In order to ensure patency of flow and access to water, small watercourses are very often subject to river maintenance works. The aim of the study was to assess the impact of 3 types of works on the diversity of fish species and density of fish in the 1 and 2 year after the works at 21 sites located on 8 rivers in the European Central Plains Ecoregion. As a result of the works, especially in the 1 year after the works, significant changes were found in hydrochemical and hydrological parameters, especially with the increase in velocity and mean depth in watercourses. Additionally, habitat change contributed to differences in the composition of the ichthyofaunal. After 1 year, the diversity of fish species and fish population density increased or remained unchanged after dredging and removal of plants from the river channel, but they decreased after the removal of macrophytes from river banks. After year 2, a decrease in the diversity of fish species and density was observed, associated with re-infestation and siltation of the watercourses. Particularly in the case of dredging and removal of macrophytes from the river bank, maintenance works should not be done too frequently, because some species of natural value disappear. Length-weight relationships in fish are important tools in fisheries management. The aim of this study was to estimate the growth curve W=aLb for European perch, Perca fluviatilis L., from the Polish coast of the southern Baltic Sea (ICES Subdivision 25). The data set comprised the total weights and total lengths of 827 specimens caught during the 2011-2013 period. The mean total length (TL) was 169.4 mm (range 100.0-310.0 mm), and the mean total weight was 83.9 g (range 11.3-553.2 g). First, a multiplicative error term and a linear regression approach to loglog-transformed data was considered. The following estimated values for the parameters were obtained: a = exp(-12.5323), b=3.25, s=0.07862. This approach was not successful in solving the common heterogeneity problem of the length-weight data. A generalized nonlinear regression approach to the original data was more suitable in our case. The estimated model was W = 3.83×10-6×L3.238 + ε, with ε~norm(0,0.0281×E[W|L]2×1.242). The estimated 95% confidence interval for b was (3.218, 3.259), and the growth was allometric. The perch from the coastal waters of the Baltic Sea (ICES Subdivision 25) was characterized by slightly better condition than that caught in inland waters and estuaries.

The aim of this study was to determine the biological, morphometric, and shape characteristics of the bivalve Rangia cuneata in the initial phase of colonisation. A total of 504 specimens were caught for the study. Their average length was 31.06 mm (range 12.7–43.2 mm) and weight 6.0 g (0.5–15.3 g). The population was dominated by individuals of 25–30 mm and 30–35 mm in length and the age of 3+ and 4+. The standard major axis regression for measurable traits describing shell cross-section indicate the allometric nature of growth for most parameters. Elongation and convexity indices by age group indicate a change in the shell shape as it becomes more elongated and convex in individuals that have already reached sexual maturity. The collected specimens were of larger sizes compared to other Baltic populations of the species, and similar in size to populations found in the neighboring Pomeranian Bay. The increase in length of R. cuneata in the Oder estuary is smaller compared to the species native sites, probably due to the lower water temperature in the study area. Considering the invasive potential of R. cuneata, it seems necessary to monitor closely its population and distribution in the estuary of Western Baltic. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The native North American bivalve species Rangia cuneata was unintentionally introduced into European waters during the first decade of the 21st century. In the Baltic Sea, it is mostly found along the southeastern coast, but in 2018 researchers also discovered the species in the Bay of Pomerania, which indicated that it could eventually inhabit the adjacent Szczecin Lagoon and Odra River. In 2021, the species was discovered for the first time in the Szczecin Lagoon during a sampling campaign, at 5 out of the 12 dispersed study sites with diverse bottom substrates. The goal of this study was to ascertain R. cuneata population density, morphometric parameters, individual growth, and the potential for further expansion in the southern Baltic Sea waters. For the study, 201 individuals of this species were collected. Compared to other sites in the southeast Baltic, the Szczecin Lagoon had a much lower average R. cuneata population density, at 13.2 ± 7.11 individuals m-2 of the bottom area. The highest population density was found at sites with more silt (4--63 µm) and less sand (>63 µm). R. cuneata shells had an average length of 30.9 ± 4.6 mm and an average weight of 6.6 ± 2.8 g. The collected specimens were greater in size than other populations of the species in the Baltic Sea and were comparable in size to populations from the nearby Bay of Pomerania. There were no specimens that were under 10 mm in length, and the population was dominated by specimens in the 25-30 mm and 30-35 mm ranges, as well as the 3+ and 4+ age groups. Given the R. cuneata's invasive potential and its fast rate of colonization of new areas, it would be prudent to monitor this population and the species migration patterns across the estuary waters of the western Baltic. The Chinese mitten crab (Eriocheir sinensis) is recognized as an invasive species in Europe but increasing fishing efforts may hold economic benefits and yield positive ecological and nutritional outcomes. The objective of this study was to determine the yield of edible parts and the compositional and nutritional characteristics of this crab, especially as a source of n-3 PUFA. The overall yield of edible parts amounted to 38.09%, with males (27.72%) exhibiting a higher meat content compared to females (25.30%). The gonads displayed the highest protein content (24.12%), while the hepatopancreas (11.67%) showcased the highest fat content. Furthermore, the fatty acid composition varied depending on the distribution within different crab segments and gender and individual size. Notably, the gonad lipids contained the most nutritionally valuable n-3 fatty acids, followed by muscle and hepatopancreas lipids. The determined index of atherogenicity (IA) from 0.2 for gonadal lipids to 0.42 for hepatopancreas lipids, index of thrombogenicity (IT) in the range of 0.10 for gonads to 0.41 for hepatopancreas, and flesh lipid quality (FLQ) from 6.9 for hepatopancreas to 23 for muscle lipids indicate their pro-health properties. The ratio of n-3 to n-6 fatty acids showed Chinese mitten crab as an excellent source of oil that can be used for food fortification and dietary supplement production. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The population of vendace (Coregonus albula L., 1758) in many European lakes, especially in Central Europe, have declined recently as a result of lake eutrophication. The aim of the study was to (i) determine many years' changes in the volume of vendace catches and specific physicochemical parameters of water, (ii) determine correlations between particular physicochemical parameters, and (iii) indicate hydrochemical parameters which show the greatest impact on the volume of vendace catches on the example of Lake Ińsko located in the European Central Plains Ecoregion. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was applied to indicate the most important hydrochemical variables impact on vendace fisheries. Among them, after redundancy analysis, 6 were taken into account (total nitrogen, N-NO3, N-NO2, total phosphorus, oxygen concentration, temperature). Time series analysis revealed an increasing trend in nutrients concentration in lake. Analyses showed that fish catches were mostly negatively connected to nitrogen and phosphorus concentration. Trend analysis, based on the above-mentioned parameters, can provide prediction of vendace catches for further years with the predictability at the level of around 60% accuracy. The results of this study are very crucial to the vendace fisheries and for formulating fisheries management policies in the future in the changing hydrochemical condition of lakes. The family Gobiidae is the largest teleost family, consisting of more than 2,000 species in more than 200 genera. They have adapted to a wide range of habitats, inhabiting mostly marine and brackish waters. Recently invasive Ponto-Caspian gobies have caused significant changes to the structure of fish assemblage throughout the European waters. The aim of the study was to verify the possibility of identifying three species of the genus Gobiidae based on the analysis of the mitochondrial region of the cytochrome oxidase subunit 1 (COI) gene. 339 samples originated from seven countries and 17 different sites were investigated. Qualitative and quantitative assessment of the extracted DNA was conducted by measuring light absorbance and electrophoretic separation. Approximately 650-bp (base pairs) fragments were amplified from the 5' region of the mitochondrial COI with the PCR (polymerase chain reaction) reaction. Sequences of 652 bp were obtained and compared with reference sequences in the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI). Based on the sequence analysis, we determined that in the analysed geographical regions, the goby preliminary identified morphologically as the round goby was represented by three species: round goby (Neogobius melanostomus), tubenose goby (Proterorhinus marmoratus), and monkey goby (Neogobius fluviatilis). The latter two are newly reported for their new habitats. Genetic characterisation of such populations offers the opportunity to assess their genetic stability, which provides agencies managing the aquatic environment in EU countries with a tool for revising the legislation, including regulations relevant for updating the status of native and invasive species in European waters. Because of their size, small depth, periodic drying out, and often lack of buffer zone, small watercourses are especially sensitive to environmental changes, anthropopressure, and biodegradation which makes them extremely prone to decline in biodiversity. Small watercourses can harbor many species of fish, including alien and invasive species. The objectives of this study were the assessment of environmental conditions, the determination of the number of fish species, their density and diversity in 10 small water courses of the European ecoregion 'Central Plains', and to estimate the effect of individual habitat parameters on the ichthyofauna. The total number of fish caught during the study was 9339, representing 33 species. Statistical analyses showed that the density of rheophilous fish was under the effect of flow velocity, discharge, width, depth, oxygen content, and pH; for the limnophilous species, the decisive factors were: discharge, depth, width, and P-PO4. The density of the euryoecious species was affected by depth, pH, electric conductivity (EC), oxygen, as well as N-NO3. All the species were significantly influenced by sandy substratum and the development of aquatic vegetation. Due to their small size and high anthropogenic pressure, small watercourses are particularly prone to severe siltation and are densely overgrown with macrophytes. Many of these watercourses are subject to regular maintenance works (RMW), consisting of seasonal desilting and vegetation clearance, in order to ensure unobstructed water flow. The aim of the study was to assess the impact of three types of maintenance works: dredging and mud removal (DMR), river channel vegetation removal (RCVR) and river bank vegetation removal (RBVR) on taxa species richness, macroinvertebrate density and the Shannon-Wiener diversity index, as well as their changes and long-term benthic recolonization one and two years after completion of the works. The study was carried out in 21 habitats on eight rivers in the European Central Plains Ecoregion. A total of 107 zoobenthic taxa were found at all sites, and their species composition was characteristic of highly hydrophytic waters with low hydrological and hydrochemical quality parameters. A significant decrease in macroinvertebrate taxa richness was observed one year after the works, as the average number of taxa had dropped from thirteen to eight, with a further fall to seven taxa two years after the RMW. The same was true for density, which had decreased from an average of 2496 to 786 individuals per square meter one year after the RMW, while, a gradual recolonization was recorded two years after the RMW, with an average density of 1295 individuals per square meter. The Shannon-Wiener index, which had averaged 2.528 before the RMW, also decreased, falling to 1.982 and 1.832 one and two years after. BACI statistical analyses showed that of the three types of maintenance work, desilting and bottom sediment removal had the largest negative impact, significantly reducing taxonomic composition (by an average of 53%), density (by an average of 43%), and ecological index values (by an average of 40%). Over-frequent maintenance can prevent macroinvertebrate populations from recovering, thus depleting the environment of valuable taxa, including those that provide food for fish and other vertebrates. Ballast water is a significant vector for the transport and introduction of aquatic organisms, microorganisms and chemical pollutants which impacts on ecosystems worldwide. In the study, ballast water from short- and long-range vessels with treatment systems was microbiologically evaluated in spring (April 20th) and summer (July 19th) and compared with waters of the main Police Seaport in the Odra River Estuary, southern Baltic Sea. All collected samples were evaluated for their physicochemical properties by standard methods. The number of individual groups of microorganisms was determined using the indirect culture method, according to the technique of inoculation of serial dilutions of samples of the examined waters. The results showed differences in the microorganisms in analysed samples. The phylogenetic analysis of bacteria recorded from the ballast water of short-range ships in spring showed the presence of six species of the genus Bordetella, while in summer four species of the genus Clostridium. In the ballast water of long-range ships, proteolytic bacteria pre-dominated in spring and halophilic bacteria in summer. In the summer period, eight species of bacteria were recorded, of which six belonged to the genus Clostridium. The ballast water treatment processes used on ships influence the composition of bacterial communities through selective recolonisation of water, which may transform bacterial functions as an important element of the marine food web. On the other hand, the presence of pathogenic bacterial species in the tested samples indicates improvement necessity of ballast water treatment systems used on vessels. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abiotic and biotic bounty of riparian waters may be affected by inadequate maintenance works. Improper planning and execution of maintenance works cause changes to hydrological and hydrochemical condition of water in small rivers, affecting biocenose of riverbeds by modifying the taxonomic composition of organisms inhabiting the regulated river section. Five (5) rivers were subject to studies - Plonia, Mysla, Tywa, Rurzyca, and Wardynka (Odra river basin), which were monitored before and after maintenance works consisting in desilting, mowing and removal of aquatic plants. This study examined hydrological (mean depth and width of small rivers, speed and flow), physical and chemical parameter of water (temperature, pH, O2, N-NO3, N-NH4, P-PO4) before and after dredging of selected rivers. Obtained results and resulting statistical analysis demonstrated increase in hydrological indices - depth, width, speed and flow. Among other physical and chemical properties that significantly increased following completion of maintenance works, were O2 and NH4. NO3 concentration and temperature dropped, but not statistically significant. Changes in hydrological and hydrochemical properties of waters caused by maintenance works may affect biodiversity of the regulated river sections, including changes in composition of ichthyofauna species. In 1970–2010, during the period of spring circulation and summer stagnation, hydrochemical studies were conducted in Lake Ińsko (Western Pomeranian Lake Region, Poland) with determination of the lake susceptibility to degradation and trophic changes. Also, the effect of the catchment area on the water quality in this waterbody was assessed. The waters of the study lake were characterised by low static index, which is an additional indicator of low dynamics of water masses, and low susceptibility to degradation. In spite of this, significant changes in the lake quality and trophy were observed. The hydrochemical parameters defining water quality of the study lake continued to improve. In the 70’s, the water quality was at the border of class II and III, while in 2006 and 2010 it reached the level characteristic for class I waters. Moreover, in the 70’s and 80’s of the previous century, Lake Ińsko Duże was a mesotrophic lake. Then, an increase in the lake trophy was observed, resulting in signs of eutrophy. At the end of the 90’s and in the first decade of the 21st century, the study lake returned to the state of mesotrophy. No restoration works were undertaken in Lake Ińsko in the study period. The improvement in water quality, called oligotrophication, resulted most probably from the lake reaction to changes in the soil use in the catchment area, since fewer phosphorus and nitrogen compounds flow into the lake, and also from the regulation of the wastewater management in the town of Ińsko. The purpose of this study was to assess progress in the implementation of rules for the control and handling of ballast water and sediments, regulated by the International Convention on the Control and Handling of Ship Ballast Water and Sediments (BWM Convention). The survey was conducted in 2018-2019 among seafarers responsible for handling ballast tanks. Analysis of the survey data revealed that despite the introduction of water treatments, ballast water continues to be a vector for the transfer of non-native organisms. This is due to the low effectiveness of the methods used, and the fact that 8% of the respondents answered that no BWT systems were used on the ships they manage. Despite this, some seafarers (4.7%) indicated that increasing environmental awareness and adherence to BWM principles should result in improved protection of aquatic ecosystems. Therefore, the global problem concerning the transport of non-native organisms via ballast water has still not been solved effectively. In the near future, improved BWT systems should be introduced, which after proper training of the crew will act as a barrier to the transfer of non-native organisms in ballast water. Increasing anthropopressure affects natural ecosystems and may express itself in regional or spot contamination of water and soil environment. The quality of ground and surface waters depends to a large extent on drainage area management, where biogenic substances (i.e. nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium) are transported with surface run-offs to the environment. The article discusses results of studies on the drainage area of Lake Czolnowskie (Zachodniopomorskie Province). Studies covered physical and chemical assessment of soil conditions and water quality; additionally, fish was caught using two independent methods - gillnets and power generator (pursuant to CEN EN 14011 2003 and PN-EN 14011 2006). Results obtained confirm regular run-off of biogenic materials from the surface of farmed drainage area to Lake Czolnowskie. During the period of studies, the reservoir was exposed to i.e. reduction of water oxygen (3.56 mg/dm3) and permanently elevated level of general phosphorus (0.15-0.27 mg/dm3) and ammonium acid (0.16-0.27 mg/dm3), which degraded the quality of life for ichthyofauna inhabiting the lake. Round goby (Neogobius melanostomus (Pallas, 1814)) is an invasive species in the Oder River. In this study, age of 147 fish was determined using scales and otoliths, and the Fraser-Lee back-calculation method was used for population structure and theoretical length growth rates with 3 mathematical models of growth: von Bertalanffy, Ford–Walford and 2nd degree polynomial. Fish condition was determined using Fulton, Le Cren and Clark equations. Average total length and weight of fish was 162.00 mm and 83.00 g, respectively. Males were more abundant than females, representing 70% of the fish caught, and achieved greater total lengths and weights. Age 2+ dominated females and 3+ males age groups. Of the three mathematical models used to estimate fish growth, the 2nd degree polynomial model had the best fit to back-calculated lengths. Males had slightly higher growth rates than females in the first two years of life but comparable in subsequent years. The diet consisted of various benthic organisms that varied with fish age. The most frequently occurring food component was Dreissena polymorpha, which accounted for approximately 70% in the diet of fish with a body length greater than 191 mm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background. European perch, Perca fluviatilis Linnaeus, 1758, is a predatory freshwater fish present also in the coastal waters of the Baltic Sea. The available catch data indicate that the population profile of this species is disrupted, and the condition of the population is not stable. The aim of this study was to determine the diversity and genetic structure of and assess phylogenetic links and gene flow between selected perch populations originating from various types of reservoirs in northern Poland. Materials and methods. A total of 392 perch were collected from selected bodies of water in north-western Poland and the fin samples were preserved in 96% ethanol or stored for short periods at -20°C. Genomic DNA was isolated, while for further mitochondrial DNA analysis, a 1081-bp fragment of the control region was amplified. Amplification products were sequenced and subjected to restriction analysis (PCR-RFLP) in order to determine the genetic diversity of the control region of mtDNA. The obtained sequences were analyzed using bioinformatics tools, and phylogenetic trees were generated to determine the degree of diversity between individuals in selected perch stocks. Results. Seven haplotypes were identified. Ten polymorphic sites were defined, and the degree of genetic diversity between selected haplotypes was determined. Based on the distribution of perch haplotypes, stocks from Pomeranian Bay (haplotypes F, D), the Szczecin Lagoon (haplotypes D, F, H), and the more homogeneous stocks from Pomeranian Bay (haplotypes F, D) and the Kamienski Lagoon (D, F) can be distinguished. Analysis of phylogenetic relations allowed identifying stocks with the most conserved genome, similar to the standard perch genome, and stocks that have become more genetically distant, probably due to the diversity of the inhabited ecosystems or natural hybridization observed in this species. Conclusions. European perch inhabiting waters of north-western Poland is a species with high plasticity, without isolated stocks or populations that can be clearly distinguished on a genetic basis. It does, however, have a tendency for mitochondrial genomic modifications, which is likely due to the broad spectrum of ecosystems inhabited by the species. Due to the homogeneity of the perch populations from the Szczecin Lagoon, the Kamienski Lagoon, and Lake Mysliborskie, they should be used for the restoration of populations in water bodies in which their genetic structure is severely disrupted. For the same reason, the policy of perch catches should be modified. The authors suggest increasing the protected size to 20 cm and limiting the catches of the species as by-catch by modifying fishing tools, including the introduction of a seasonal prohibition of tools that might eliminate individuals of 15-16 cm in length from natural waters in their spawning period. For the last few decades there have been reports not only of the occurrence of new invasive species of European watercourses, but also their increasing expansion. One of such species is the Amur sleeper (Perccottus glenii). The present work contains assessment of age and length distribution, condition as well as growth rate and analysis of the parasite fauna of the Amur sleeper from the waters of the Vistula River tributary in its middle course (the Habdziński Canal). During the catch performed in 2017 and 2019, the total of 177 Amur sleepers were recorded in the studied watercourse and a statistically significant sex structure disproportion was observed. Among the specimens caught in 2017 dominant were fishes with lengths of 50.1–60.1 mm whereas in 2019 the majority of the Amur sleeper specimens measured 30.1–50.0 mm. Six age groups were recorded among the caught fish with a clear prevalence of specimens aged 1+ (70.06%). The most frequently recorded parasite of P. glenii was non-quantifiable Trichodina rostrata ciliate for which the Amur sleeper from the Polish waters appeared to be a new host. Moreover, the presence of an acanthocephalan Acanthocephalus lucii, not recorded in Poland in this host before, was observed in the chyme. Also, accidental presence of larvae of the Opisthioglyphe ranae tremadote, which is a parasite typical of amphibians, was also recorded. Despite unfavourable habitat conditions and increased volumes of biogenic substances in the waters of the Habdziński Canal, the Amur sleeper found convenient conditions to reside in this small watercourse. Chinese mitten crabs are one of the largest species of invasive crustaceans in the Baltic Sea catchment basin. Due to their catadromous migration, they can serve as a vector for small organisms, transporting them over distances greater than 500 km. Research on various crab species has shown their notable role in the spread of microorganisms to new aquatic environments. The aim of this study was to determine the diversity and abundance of microorganisms migrating with the Chinese mitten crab on the densely-distributed setae found on their claws. Our analysis also considered the potential differences in the number and genera of microorganisms between male and female Chinese mitten crabs. The study consisted of forty-eight (48) crabs (sex ratio 1:1) fished with a fyke net during their intensive downstream migration in Lake Dąbie (which is the southern part of the Oder River estuary) between November 8 and 11 2017. In these Chinese mitten crabs, a rich microbiological flora was found, which can be divided into three basic groups: heterotrophic bacteria, yeasts, and fungi. Microorganism genus biodiversity on claw setae was greater in males than in females, although the total aerobic microbial count (TAMC), total halophile count (THC), and total combined yeasts and molds count (TYMC) showed no statistically significant differences between sexes. Phylogenetic analysis of PCR products and genetic taxonomic analysis of dominating strains in samples from crab claw setae showed the dominance of Bacillus tequilensis bacterium. The presence of these microbiologically antagonistic bacteria, capable of adapting perfectly to different environmental conditions, indicates that the crabs are capable of introducing potentially dangerous microorganisms into new ecosystems. The studies were conducted in the summers of 2017 and 2018 on three watercourses in Central and North-Western Poland, the where maintenance works involving disposal of sediment and silt were performed in the autumn of 2017. Monitoring of the ichthyofauna in the Rurzyca River and the Tywa River before (year 2017) and after the maintenance works (year 2018) indicated a decrease in the number of species. Altogether, 23 fish species were caught in all the watercourses. Out of these, 12 species were not recorded after the studied rivers had been dredged. A slight decrease in the number of fish species was observed in each studied river after the maintenance works. The values of physicochemical parameters obtained for each watercourse indicate a low quality of the waters. After silt had been removed from the watercourses, lower N-NO3 - values were observed at most research sites, whereas the N-NH4 + values increased significantly (except for one site on the Kanał Habdziński). Additionally, high volumes of P-PO4 3-were observed (except for sites 2 and 3 on the Kanał Habdziński and site 2 on the Rurzyca River). Maintenance works performed on small watercourses have a negative impact on the quality of waters and a less significant impact on the number of fish and biodiversity. This appears to be connected with migration of fish in the river during the maintenance works and avoidance of the consequent unfavourable conditions to gradually return to their habitats afterwards. Stone moroko (Pseudorasbora parva) is considered to be one of the most invasive fishes, dispersing rapidly all over Europe and also in the freshwaters of the Baltic Sea basin. A recent survey carried out in the catchment of the lower part of the Odra River (Poland) in 2015 and 2016 revealed a large new population of stone moroko, which had colonized the creek Wardynka. The sample of 518 fish caught was dominated by age groups 1+ (341 specimens) and 2+ (99 specimens); however, older fish were also present, which means that at the moment of analysis the species had been in the Wardynka for at least 5 years. The diet was composed of copepods, amphipods, ostracods, and cladocerans, with Daphnia sp. being most frequent, which also showed the highest index of relative importance and percentage by weight in the food. The parasitic fauna composition of stone moroko in the new location involves local parasites only. Trichodinella subtilis, Diplozoon paradoxum, Apatemon gracilis, and Caryophyllaeus laticeps were found for the first time ever. The lack of parasitic species that normally occur in fish of this species was probably caused by the lack of intermediate hosts, which are necessary to complete their life cycles. During of the political and economical transformation in Poland in the 1990s the optimal fishing vessel was developed for fishing in the Baltic Sea. The vessel was tested with respect to its exploitation and fishing capabilities. The ship is intended for research purposes but simultaneously can be utilized as a typical fishing vessel on the Baltic Sea. Construction and exploitation parameters were presented in this text. Simple Summary: Macroinvertebrates are very important to aquatic ecosystems. They are food for vertebrates and their biodiversity serves as a testament of the quality of their habitats. The majority of research on macroinvertebrates simply describes the composition and population density of species living in large rivers and lakes. The aim of our study was to compare the biodiversity of macrozoobenthos assemblages and to determine the effect of physicochemical and hydrological conditions on their abundance and density in 10 small rivers in agricultural areas. Overall, 105 taxa were identified as species living in changing conditions. Oxygenation of water and nitrogen content were important factors determining the existence of macroinvertebrates in these rivers. Some groups of organisms showed sensitivity to changes in water temperature as well as to the flow and depth in rivers. Most publications on the influence of environmental factors on macroinvertebrate communities focus on large rivers, whereas relatively few examine small watercourses in agricultural areas, which, due to their size and pressure from intensive agricultural production, are much more susceptible to the effects of unfavourable environmental conditions or anthropopressure. The aim of our study was to compare the biodiversity of macrozoobenthos assemblages and to determine the effects of physicochemical and hydrological conditions on their abundance and density in 10 small rivers in agricultural areas located in northwest (53°23′ N 15°14′ E) and central (52°11′ N 20°48′ E) Poland. In total, 105 taxa were recorded, with the majority being euryoecious. Among the assessed physicochemical parameters, oxygenation was found to affect the density and number of taxa; another important factor was the content of nitrate nitrogen. Sensitivity to changes in water temperature was observed in some macrozoobenthos taxa (especially Decapoda). The highly invasive Chinese mitten crabs ( Eriocheir sinensis) was studied to reveal the genetic relationship between three none self-sustainable population within the Polish Oder and Vistula River and Lake Vänern in Sweden. Crabs from self-sustainable populations were collected from the Elbe River (Germany), San Francisco Bay (USA) and five Asian river estuaries. Both parsimony and maximum likelihood analysis of the nuclear ITS 1 and ITS 2 regions reveal a similar topological pattern. The mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I ( COI) sequence had too low resolution to be informative. The Oder River haplotypes showed high sequence similarities to both the Elbe population and/or the native spawning areas in China. The Vistula River showed haplotypic similarity to specimens from the Oder River in Poland or the Elbe River. Also high sequence similarities were observed to the specimens from the Swedish Lake Vänern indicating to an origin from the River Elbe. Minor changes in evolutionary interpretation exist depending on how gaps are treated and the analytic method. There is a complex movement involving back and forth transoceanic colonization of the Chinese mitten crab haplotypes. We have quantified the relative growth of the merus and the propodus & carpus of walking legs of an adult of Eriocheir sinensis against the carapace width by fitting the major axis lines. Different lines have been fitted to data relative to male and female individuals. Slope and elevation tests have been performed to investigate sexual dimorphism. Isometry tests have been used to classify the relative growth of each part of the legs against the carapace width as isometric or allometric. All the slope tests have not rejected the null hypothesis of a common slope for the major axes fitted to male data and to female data. However, all the elevation tests have rejected the null hypothesis of a common elevation; so sexual dimorphism was detected for all measured leg parts. The isometry tests have rejected the null hypothesis of isometry only for the merus of the first (left and right) legs of male individuals. All the other isometry tests have not rejected the null hypothesis of isometry. So the relative growth of all the measured leg parts, but the merus of the first (left and right) legs of males, against the carapace width was isometric both for males and for females.
