We review here our recent work in achieving mid-infrared (MIR) fibre lasing beyond 5 µm wavelength in Ce3+-doped selenide-chalcogenide fibre, as well as the observed photoluminescence in samples of the same composition but in particulate and bulk glass form as well as unstructured fibre and in the SIF (step index fibre) in which fibre lasing took place.

Teaching theology within academic institutions with confessional commitments and theologically conservative students requires holding together, in creative tension, two pedagogical goals. The challenge is to promote rigorous academic inquiry by encouraging student openness to engagement with perspectives that challenge their own beliefs while simultaneously constructing a course that is experienced as a safe space where students do not feel their personal faith is under attack. This essay presents the argument that a methodological framework for introductory theology courses informed by Alasdair MacIntyre's reflections on the nature of living traditions holds great promise for achieving these objectives. The essay will also describe how a creative extended analogy drawn from the game of basketball facilitates student comprehension of this initially abstract intellectual framework. Finally, the essay will offer some representative examples of student participation in course online discussion forums in order to illustrate the effectiveness of this approach for student learning.

Historic tailings dams and their associated mine waste can pose a significant risk to human and environmental health. The Wheal Maid mine site, Cornwall, UK, serves as an example of the temporal evolution of a tailings storage facility after mining has ceased and the acid-generating waste subjected to surficial processes. This paper discusses its designation as a contaminated land site and reviews our current understanding of the geochemistry, mineralogy, and microbiology of the Wheal Maid tailings, from both peer-reviewed journal articles and unpublished literature. We also present new data on waste characterisation and detailed mineral chemistry and data from laboratory oxidation experiments. Particularly of interest at Wheal Maid is the presence of pyrite-bearing "Grey Tailings", which, under typical environmental conditions at the Earth's surface, would be expected to have undergone oxidation and subsequently formed acidic and metalliferous mine drainage (AMD). The results identified a number of mechanisms that could explain the lack of pyrite oxidation in the Grey Tailings, including a lack of nutrients inhibiting microbial Fe(II) oxidation, passivation of pyrite mineral surfaces with tailings processing chemicals, and an abundance of euhedral pyrite grains. Such research areas need further scrutiny in order to inform the design of future tailings facilities and associated AMD management protocols. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study demonstrates a discrimination of endometrial cancer versus (non-cancerous) benign controls based on mid-infrared (MIR) spectroscopy of dried plasma or serum liquid samples. A detailed evaluation was performed using four discriminant methods (LDA, QDA, kNN or SVM) to execute the classification task. The discriminant methods used in the study comprised methods that are widely used in the statistics (LDA and QDA) and machine learning literature (kNN and SVM). Of particular interest, is the impact of discrimination when presented with spectral data from a section of the bio-fingerprint region (1430 cm−1 to 900 cm−1) in contrast to the more extended bio-fingerprint region used here (1800 cm−1 to 900 cm−1). Quality metrics used were the misclassification rate, sensitivity, specificity, and Matthew's correlation coefficient (MCC). For plasma (with spectral data ranging from 1430 cm−1 to 900 cm−1), the best performing classifier was kNN, which achieved a sensitivity, specificity and MCC of 0.865 ± 0.043, 0.865 ± 0.023 and 0.762 ± 0.034, respectively. For serum (in the same wavenumber range), the best performing classifier was LDA, achieving a sensitivity, specificity and MCC of 0.899 ± 0.023, 0.763 ± 0.048 and 0.664 ± 0.067, respectively. For plasma (with spectral data ranging from 1800 cm−1 to 900 cm−1), the best performing classifier was SVM, with a sensitivity, specificity and MCC of 0.993 ± 0.010, 0.815 ± 0.000 and 0.815 ± 0.010, respectively. For serum (in the same wavenumber range), QDA performed best achieving a sensitivity, specificity and MCC of 0.852 ± 0.023, 0.700 ± 0.162 and 0.557 ± 0.012, respectively. Our findings demonstrate that even when a section of the bio-fingerprint region has been removed, good classification of endometrial cancer versus non-cancerous controls is still maintained. In many cases, it may be possible to recover value (e.g., metals, land) from legacy mine wastes and tailings when applying leaching-based remediation such as dump/heap leaching or in-vessel soil washing. However, if the lixiviant used has the potential to cause environmental damage upon leakage, then this approach will have limited practicability due to actual or perceived risk. This study focused on comparing the efficacy of organic acids, namely methanesulfonic (CH3SO3H) and citric (C6H8O7) acid, with mineral acids, namely sulfuric (H2SO4) and hydrochloric (HCl) acid, for the dissolution of Cu and As from mine tailings. The advantage of the former acid type is the fact that its conjungate base is readily biodegradable which should thereby limit the environmental impact of accidental spill/leakage (particularly in non-carbonate terrain) and might also be directly useful in capture/recovery systems coupled with percolation leaching (e.g., as an electron donor in sulphate-reducing bioreactors). The operational factors acid concentration, leaching time, mixing intensity and solid-liquid ratio, were tested in order to determine the optimum conditions for metal dissolution. HCl, H2SO4, and CH3SO3H typically exhibited a relatively similar leaching ability for As despite their different pKa values, with dissolutions of 58%, 56%, 55%, and 44% recorded for H2SO4, HCl, CH3SO3H, and C6H8O7, respectively, after 48 h when using 1 M concentrations and a 10:1 L:S ratio. For the same conditions, H3SO4 was generally the most effective acid type for Cu removal with 38% compared to 32%, 29% and 22% for HCl, CH3SO3H and C6H8O7. As such, CH3SO3H and C6H8O7 demonstrated similar performances to strong mineral acids and, as such, hold great promise as environmentally compatible alternatives to conventional mineral acids for metal recovery from ores and waste. Clay-rich deposits are commonly assumed to be aquitards which act as natural hydraulic barriers due to their low hydraulic connectivity. Postdepositional weathering processes are known to increase the permeability of aquitards in the near surface but not impact on deeper parts of relatively thick formations. However, syndepositional processes affecting the hydraulic properties of aquitards have previously received little attention in the literature. Here, we analyze a 31 m deep sediment core recovered from an inland clay-rich sedimentary sequence using a combination of techniques including particle size distribution and microscopy, centrifuge dye tracer testing and micro X-ray CT imaging. Subaerial deposition of soils within these fine grained alluvial deposits has led to the preservation of considerable macropores (root channels or animal burrows). Connected pores and macropores thus account for vertical hydraulic conductivity (K) of 4:231029 m/s (geometric mean of 13 samples) throughout the thick aquitard, compared to a matrix K that is likely <10210 m/s, the minimum K value that was measured. Our testing demonstrates that such syndepositional features may compromise the hydraulic integrity of what otherwise appears to have the characteristics of a much lower permeability aquitard. Heterogeneity within a clay-rich matrix could also enhance vertical connectivity, as indicated by digital analysis of pore morphology in CT images. We highlight that the paleo-environment under which the sediment was deposited must be considered when aquitards are investigated as potential natural hydraulic barriers and illustrate the value of combining multiple investigation techniques for characterizing clay-rich deposits.
