The traditional foundation of science lies on the cornerstones of theory and experiment. Theory is used to explain experiment, which in turn guides the development of theory. Since the advent of computers and the development of computational algorithms, computation has risen as the third cornerstone of science, joining theory and experiment on an equal footing. Computation has become an essential part of modern science, amending experiment by enabling accurate comparison of complicated theories to sophisticated experiments, as well as guiding by triage both the design and targets of experiments and the development of novel theories and computational methods. Like experiment, computation relies on continued investment in infrastructure: it requires both hardware (the physical computer on which the calculation is run) as well as software (the source code of the programs that performs the wanted simulations). In this Perspective, I discuss present-day challenges on the software side in computational chemistry, which arise from the fast-paced development of algorithms, programming models, as well as hardware. I argue that many of these challenges could be solved with reusable open source libraries, which are a public good, enhance the reproducibility of science, and accelerate the development and availability of state-of-the-art methods and improved software. While early modern Spain may seem a world away, it is an extremely rich and relevant context for gaining a better understanding of the Rhetoric of Health, specifically the power of metaphor, in the related spheres of policy-making and public debate. It was a time and place in which the urban populace's physical well-being depended upon the fortunes of theatrical performances due to a system of alms for hospitals driven by ticket receipts. Anti-theatricalists argued that the immoral nature of theatrical performances made them spiritually and medically detrimental to society. Pro-theatricalists argued that plays were always a public good on balance because they raised much-needed funds for hospitals. Instead of producing a conflict between morality and public health, each side reinforced their connection until the two topics became nearly inseparable in the sphere of public debate. While pro-theatricalists mainly stayed with their arguments about funding hospitals, anti-theatricalists developed a new strategy of literalising the metaphor of theatre as a "plague of the republic" and arguing that immoral entertainment brought literal disease to the populace as a punishment from God. This exemplifies Stephen Pender's observation of how, in an early modern medical context, "Rhetoric as a way of perceiving probabilities and adjusting one's argument to the audience and circumstance offers a model of ethical action and interaction". This article is organised chronologically to track specific adjustments to a specific public-health debate that rely upon moral metaphors of medicine. Each side wrangled over these metaphors in an effort to break a deadlock in a public-health policy debate with entertainment, finance, and morality at its centre. By the end of the seventeenth century, anti-theatricalists finally found their best rhetorical weapon in the literalisation of the "plague of the republic" metaphor, but it only offered a short-term solution to banning theatre contingent upon the ebb and flow of epidemics. Simultaneously, the finance structure of funding hospitals began to erase the role of hospitals from the longstanding debate about the morality of public theatre. There is now a substantial literature on the desirability of authentic leadership. While the concept has its critics, overwhelming this literature sees authentic leadership as a virtuous practice that benefits all: the leaders themselves, their followers, and the organizations they lead. But what if were possible for a leader to be seen as both authentic and cruel? For this to happen it would require a vice to be reconstrued as a virtue. Drawing on the work of Judith Shklar, I argue that it is indeed possible for a leader to be both authentic and cruel under circumstances where cruelty is seen by followers as a legitimate means to a desirable end. I support this claim by examining the way that some political leaders advocate cruelty toward refugees in the name of the common good. Shklar has shown that, under such circumstances, a leader is more likely to be challenged by their followers for being hypocritical (the antipode of authenticity) than for being cruel. From this I draw conclusions about the nature of authentic leadership as a performative and productive practice. I end by encouraging research on the organizational and institutional antecedents that enable leaders who are deemed to be authentic to thrive, even when they act cruelly. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article highlights the issue of classification of the concepts of state sovereignty, which is of key importance in ensuring peaceful and equal coexistence of states. It has been established that the most expedient is the classification of ideas about state sovereignty precisely at the stage of its formation and formation in the political life of European states in the late Middle Ages and Modern Age according to the criterion of its absoluteness and relativity. It is found that even given the widespread prevalence of these competing ideas, unity on the main provisions of each of them has not been achieved. Based on the idea of the possibility of limiting the state’s sovereignty, which has long been very popular, it was found that representatives of the scientific community within the period under study were divided according to this criterion into: supporters of the concept of absolute sovereignty, who denied any possibility of limiting sovereignty, considering it unacceptable; supporters of the concept of absolute sovereignty, who allowed certain restrictions; supporters of the concept of relative sovereignty, who declared certain restrictions on sovereignty; supporters of the concept of relative sovereignty, who stated the existence of the possibility of transferring part of sovereignty to interstate entities. In general, the essence of the idea of absolute sovereignty is seen in the unlimited or almost unlimited power of the sovereign, who is not responsible for his or her actions. It is stated that such ideas are the basis for the interpretation of the content of sovereignty by authoritarian and totalitarian states. At the same time, the evidence that the category of sovereignty is viewed through the prism of democracy is the promotion of the ideas of the European space unity, consolidation of the concepts of external and internal limitations of the state, which emphasizes the readiness of states to sacrifice for the common good – peaceful coexistence on the basis of equality, justice and humanism. Thus, this classification helps to establish the historical foundations of different interpretations of the content of sovereignty by the states of competing legal systems and allows to form a conceptual framework for the idea of state sovereignty at the stage of its approval in the international legal system. We analyze the problem of fairly locating two facilities providing a public good in two spatial models: a city line and a network. Each facility is characterized not only by its location but also by its quality. We introduce new notions of envy‐freeness and fairness that can be applied to spatial settings. Real living wages (RLWs) are an important ethical and moral policy to ensure that employees earn enough to live on. In providing 'a fair day's pay for a fair day's work', they set an ethical foundation for liveability. This article explores the ethics and moral economy of the RLW for lower-paid staff in the overlooked economy context of UK professional football, illustrated by a qualitative case study of Luton Town Football Club (LTFC). The article provides theoretical insights grounded in moral economy concepts about how a RLW contributes to a broader common good means of enabling fuller human participation in decent working and living conditions. Applying these concepts using a multi-disciplinary moral economy interpretation offers deeper theoretical contributions than economistic interpretations restricted to mainly technocratic economic distributive issues. LTFC are evidently ethically embedded in a moral economy as a local community club paying a RLW, and part of the overlooked economy. The research also contributes to contemporary debates on 'Common Good' HRM regarding the role of living wages in addressing grand common good challenges like inequality and quality of working lives. From the anthropological tradition of ethnography, this paper adopts a feminist, intersectional and decolonial approach to expose the multiple edges of the experiences and political practices of Mapuche women, the care for their territory and struggle for the common good of their community. Grounded on an extensive empirical data, the paper analyses the relationship between the Mapuche people and the State of Chile, to reveal the impact this has had on the way Mapuche people develop as a community within their political spaces. Following this, the paper focusses on the diverse experiences of Mapuche women within their communities, exposing the impact of the processes of historical dispossession of the Mapuche territory, particularly as being a “Mapuche woman,” as an identity based on lived and shared experiences and stories. The paper then examines representations of gender relations and gender violence, anchored on the binary order of the patriarchal and colonial system of the Global North. This exposes how Mapuche women occupy a place perceived as inferior to that of men, whilst it reveals how Mapuche women question these discursive constructions of colonial inheritance, to recover their history in their community configurations of equality. This paper constructs a model for the study of optimal immigration from the perspective of natives. They have preferences over redistributive transfers, a public good subject to congestion, and over the level of family‐based migration. Border enforcement is costly. The model derives conditions for an optimal immigration policy, which balances skill‐based against family‐based migration, equalizes the fiscal opportunity cost of unauthorized immigration with the marginal cost of enforcement, and balances the effects on transfers against the implied congestion effects. This article highlights the strategic economic man in Mohsin Hamid’s How to Get Filthy Rich in Rising Asia. The novel reveals the contradictions of faking entrepreneurship amid the uneven development in rising Asia, showcasing individuals’ efforts for self-improvement despite political, socioeconomic, and cultural challenges. This faking fosters a new global identity that is sociable, emulative, altruistic, and cooperative as the economic man is reconciled with the sociological man, who learns from others through reading, imitation, and other interactive strategies. We introduce semi-flexible majority rules for public good provision with private valuations. Such rules take the form of a two-stage, multiple-round voting mechanism where the output of the first stage is the default alternative for the second stage and the vote-share thresholds used in every round of binary voting (a) vary with the alternative on the table for a public-good level and (b) require a qualified majority for approving the alternative on the table by stopping the procedure. We show that these mechanisms implement the ex post utilitarian optimal public-good level, provided valuations can only be high or low. This public-good level is chosen after all potential socially optimal alternatives have been picked for a voting round. The rise of social media has correlated with an increase in political polarization, which many perceive as a threat to public discourse and democratic governance. This paper presents a framework, drawing on social epistemology and the economic theory of public goods, to explain how social media can contribute to polarization, making us collectively poorer, even while it provides a preferable media experience for individual consumers. Collective knowledge and consensus is best served by having richly connected networks that are epistemically integrated: individuals with diverse levels of expertise should be relatively well connected to each other. In epistemically segregated networks, by contrast, we have reason to predict collective epistemic failures. Expert knowledge will be isolated from the majority, leading average opinion to be less informed than is socially optimal, and entrenching disagreements. Because social media enables users to very easily adopt homophilous network connections – connections to those with similar opinions, education levels, and social backgrounds – it is likely to have increased epistemic segregation compared to older media platforms. The paper explains the theoretical foundations of these predictions, and sketches regulatory measures – such as taxes – that might be employed to preserve the public good of a well integrated social media network. We contribute to the policy trade-offs literature by focusing on a principled trade-off that juxtaposes a widely desired objective with a moral belief and by examining how education conditions voters' responses to this trade-off. Through survey experiments in Indonesia and Tunisia, we examine how voters respond to a liberal initiative to relax alcohol restrictions to raise revenue for social security and a conservative initiative to tighten alcohol restrictions even if it decreases social security revenue. We find that voters opposed the liberal initiative and that more educated voters supported the conservative initiative more than their less educated counterparts. These findings highlight the powerful constraints of moral beliefs even in the context of a trade-off with a common good and support the socialization perspective of education that portrays education as an institution that socializes individuals in the society's dominant values—whether liberal or conservative—as opposed to simply a force for liberalization. As sites where social media corporations profess their commitment to principles like community and free speech, policy documents function as boundary objects that navigate diverse audiences, purposes, and interests. This article compares the discourse of values in the Privacy Policies, Terms of Service, and Community Guidelines of five major platforms (Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Twitter, and TikTok). Through a mixed-methods analysis, we identified frequently mentioned value terms and five overarching principles consistent across platforms: expression, community, safety, choice, and improvement. However, platforms limit their burden to execute these values by selectively assigning responsibility for their enactment, often unloading such responsibility onto users. Moreover, while each of the core values may potentially serve the public good, they can also promote narrow corporate goals. Competition and cooperation are not always at odds and contributions to public goods are almost never one‐off one‐shot temporally isolated events. We examine voluntary contribution in a new public good experiment where "self‐love" competitive motivations and time dynamic interdependencies are simultaneously considered. The competitive motivations are manipulated via subjects competing in each group (intragroup competition) for higher return factors on their public expenditure, whereas time dynamic interdependencies are modeled by letting returns from previous periods available for future contributions to public goods (CG). We ran two control conditions where intragroup competition (C) and time dynamic interdependencies (G) are separately implemented. Our findings showed that shares of endowment contributed were significantly greater and increasing over time when endowments growth and heterogeneous returns factors were simultaneously introduced. This effect can be attributed to return factors obtained in previous periods. Accordingly, wealth exponential growth has been greatly accelerated relative to our control condition. Distributive equity concerns have been also documented. Although Gini coefficients were significantly lower in the presence of heterogeneous return factors and endowments growth, inequality trends seemed to converge at control condition values in the long term. This research brings together insights from the literature on the measurement of transaction costs related to agri-environmental schemes (AES) and formulates a conceptual framework for measuring these transaction costs. The framework is then applied to the Dutch AES in which farmer collectives act as a mediator between farmer-members and the Dutch government. In particular, we study the distribution of private transaction costs in the collective scheme and compare this to the distribution under the former individual approach. Results show that transaction costs have increased substantially for the collective, while they decreased for public actors. Moreover, the execution of the Dutch AES depends for a large part on volunteers, whose costs are not accounted for in official records. Although the Dutch AES appears successful in terms of coordination, we conclude that it carries substantial transaction costs for the collectives and its dependency on volunteers makes it fragile in the long term. There is limited understanding of what constitutes public benefit from the perspective of the public, and none that we are aware of related to food consumer science. The purpose of this study is to contribute towards a better understanding of public benefit as a whole and its connection to food choice, essential to driving progress towards responsible consumption and healthier diets. Public benefit, associated trade-offs and responsible actors were investigated via written questions, and food choice was explored during group discussions using the PlayDecide methodology. Adults (n = 105) were recruited in six European countries (Denmark, Germany, Italy, Slovakia, Spain and the UK) and stratified by attained education. Our findings indicate that assumptions should not be made that there is general consensus about what constitutes public benefit, especially with regard to consumer food choice. Group discussions around food-related freedom of choice, education, agency and responsibility suggested that private and public benefit are neither mutually exclusive nor automatically complementary. The serious game approach employed affected a change in participants' public benefit perceptions, demonstrating its potential to better evaluate the connections between private interests and the common good through meaningful public deliberation. What strategies can help communities to overcome the public goods problem in the maintenance of communal spaces and infrastructure in urban environments? This paper investigates whether an intervention targeted at Community-Based Organizations can motivate them to make increased contributions to the public good, thereby improving outcomes for the community as a whole. Using a randomized controlled trial conducted in Dakar, Senegal, the analysis tests the effectiveness of a program that provides incentives to community groups to encourage them to keep their neighborhoods clean, with the ultimate goal of reducing flooding. The long tradition of research on cooperation includes a well-established finding that individuals respond to the degree of conflict between self-and collective interests (that is, the relative benefits from cooperation) in providing public goods. Existing empirical evidence builds upon settings where participants make multiple decisions or strategically consider alternative scenarios. Here, we consider a decision setting where participants face a one-time (single-decision) setting. One-time cooperative encounters often occur in volunteering or donating to immediate needs for crisis relief. For these distinct and highly relevant settings, we report a lack of responsiveness to increases in cooperation benefits, thereby highlighting limits to our understanding of the determinants of one-time cooperation encounters. Across two studies, n = 2,232 individuals participate in treatments where we vary across participants the relative benefit from contributing to a public good (that is, the marginal per capita return, the MPCR). We examine decisions from alternative participant pools (UK general population vs. students), implementations varying the physical distance between participants (online vs. in the laboratory), and more complex decision settings considering group-to-group interactions including not only providers but also donors to public goods. Throughout, neither average contribution levels, nor the distribution of contributions are significantly affected by the increases in cooperation benefits. The mechanism behind these results can be explained by the close correlation between expectations of other's cooperation and own cooperation, and the fact that these expectations do not increase with higher benefits from cooperation. Public K-12 education in the United States struggles with competing narratives regarding its function and role. The neoliberal push to quantify education has led to increased legislation relating to state testing as well as public debate about teachers’ roles and responsibilities. A case study of teachers who were teaching in Oklahoma at the time of the 2018 Oklahoma Teacher Walkout offers insight into how teachers negotiate these competing narratives. Many teachers considered teaching to be a “calling,” which aligns with social contract theory where individuals will yield personal interests for the common good. Teachers viewed their occupation as time-intensive and described themselves using the competing narratives caregiver and expert. Teachers described their social contract in ways that align with the ideas of caveat emptor or bait and switch. The 2018 Oklahoma Teacher Walkout occurred because the social contract was broken, and teachers began advocating for themselves. A new communication theory I call the coercion of social responsibility (CoerSR) explains how internalized social contracts acted to constrain teachers’ actions. This essay proposes a new reading of Julius Caesar 's account of friendship that also illuminates Shakespeare's broader communitarian political attitudes. It argues that the 'quarrel' (or reconciliation) scene between Brutus and Cassius presents a crucial turn in the play's closely meditated account of amity. This sheds new light on Shakespeare's response to two classical sources: Cicero's De Amicitia and Euripides' Iphigenia at Aulius , whose opening provides the model for this sequence. The significance of how Brutus and Cassius settle their differences, as well as their refusal to believe the enemy is always occulted within the friend, has been under-estimated. The high-minded ideals of Ciceronian amicitia seem wildly remote from the play's exposure of how friendship works in political life. We witness it being made serviceable to ambitions and held in bad faith: Cicero acknowledges these possibilities too. Yet the neglected later sequences of Julius Caesar tell a different story about friendship that emphasizes its role in promoting commonalty and reconciliation. Family businesses can be considered unique organizations due to the manifestation of two distinct logics in their environment: on the one hand, the family logic, which values the common good of the members, and on the other, the business logic, which aims at rationalization and obtaining profits. Research on this topic indicates that individuals in these organizations are subject to having their subjectivity hijacked, caused by the experience between the field of work and family, which leads, in a way, to the inability to separate attitudes from the two fields, with no clear division by the individual. The theory of action allowed us to understand organizations as a social field, taking into account the concepts of capital, habitus and illusio. This theoretical article aimed to comparatively discuss the foundations of the Bourdieusian theory of action and the analytical principles of the kidnapping of subjectivity by Faria and Meneghetti (2007), highlighting the possibility of applying them in research on family organizations. This article contributes to the understanding of family organizations as a social field that enables the constitution of a subject who is aware of their choices and knows how to deal with power games in the organizational space. The co-author of this article, Erich Weingartner, has worked internationally in both human rights and humanitarian aid. Based on his expertise, especially in the Korean peninsula, and on Lutheran theology, he analyzes the tensions between defending human rights and providing humanitarian aid, arguing that a crime and punishment paradigm cannot heal the divisions within our polarized world. The existential threats facing humanity require cooperation and reconciliation. Mill advocates plural voting on instrumentalist grounds: the more competent are to have more votes. At the same time, he regards it as a 'personal injustice' to withhold from anyone 'the ordinary privilege of having his voice reckoned in the disposal of affairs in which he has the same interest as other people' (Mill 1861a , p. 469). But if electoral voice is justified by its contribution to good governance, why would it be an injustice to deny the vote to those whose use of it would disserve this end? I propose the dual justification view to resolve this tension. Mill holds that electoral voice is to be justified in two complementary ways: both as communicating a person's interests and perspective in order that they be accommodated in policy deliberations, and as advancing a vision of the common good and influencing the policy of the legislature. The present study provides a comparative analysis of the media convergence of China Media Group and US Agency for Global Media to illustrate the increasing US–China rivalry in international communication. It yields the following tentative findings: Both have been undergoing rigorous development at the technological and operational levels of convergence to enhance international communication; both are made to show more explicit loyalty to its official ideology, and both have become more monolithic via convergence; both have integrated their broadcasting services for an increasingly integrated market of information and news; both seem to be weaponizing itself against each other to fuel rivalry in international communication between the two nations rather than deepening mutual understanding and cooperation for mutual good and global good. The two case studies reveal that media convergence has not been able to liberate journalism from nationalistic constraints and transform it into an instrument to spawn new ideas and disseminate high-quality information and news for global public good. Personas inform design by representing diverse user needs. Since their initial application in commercial technology contexts, personas have been adopted in several research domains for public good, such as health, accessibility, politics and civic society, education, sustainability, cybersecurity, and criminology. In this review paper, we analyzed 58 research studies that created personas in these domains, referred to as Personas for Social Good (PFSG). In most studies, PFSG was primarily exploratory and focused on initial methodology development. More than half (59%) neglected to discuss concerns with stereotyping or evaluate how personas contributed to improving social concerns in their respective domains. To facilitate a shift towards more socially conscious persona applications, we identified and critically examined the most comprehensive PFSG domain applications in our sample. We study the impact of framing on leading‐by‐example. Our 2 × 2 design consists of group level frames (Wall Street vs. Community) and individual level frames (First/Second Movers vs. Leader/Followers). We report on two studies where we elicit participants' beliefs allowing us to evaluate whether framing effects are driven by beliefs or preferences. Across both studies, average contributions are significantly lower in the Community—First Mover frame. This is primarily because leaders contribute less, pulling down followers' contributions. John Locke was a social contract theorist. He envisaged that individuals had domiciled in a state of nature, enjoying natural rights. But because of the insecurities of the natural state, individuals transitioned to the stability of civil society, guaranteed by a sovereign. There were fetters on the sovereign, however, such as passing laws for the public good. Is modern legislation to counter terrorism for the public good? Locke also expressly granted a right of resistance on the people. But is this right terrorism? We present some ideas on the tools and financing of a truly supranational industrial policy in the European Union (EU). We begin by reviewing the evolving rationales for and attitudes towards industrial policy, and highlight the growing acceptance of a pro-active role of the State in the economy as a response to external challenges of global scale and transformative impact. At this historical juncture, a polycrisis and a permacrisis are reshaping globalisation, fuelling rivalries and interventions aimed at increasing autonomy and sovereignty over strategic assets as well as to facilitate the green transition. The EU can institutionalise a permanent European industrial policy through the establishment of instruments characterised by a pure European public good nature. We suggest a framework fund on the model of NextGenerationEU package, featuring the 'Europeanisation' of the Important Projects of Common European Interest and better designed centrally managed programmes. Catholic institutions of higher education are in the world with a purpose that stems from an identity rooted in the life and the faith of the Church. Their reality is partially constituted and guided by a set of principles and rules of law. This 'normative framework' defines the path of each university toward the common good. Norms are also essential for stabilizing the life of these organizations and for protecting their identity and mission throughout time. This article presents a summary of that normative framework, to furnish a specific perspective—the legal point of view—for observing, understanding, and assessing the reality of these institutions. This paper examines the conceptualization of innovation as a public good using an empirical analysis of patent transfers. It proposes that patents make inventions both excludable and alienable, in contrast to secrecy which only makes them excludable. A survival analysis finds that 10% higher complexity of patent descriptions is associated with 9% higher patent transfer hazard. This suggests that inventors more often patent complex inventions for the alienability motive – as opposed to the excludability motive. Small inventors transfer their patents less likely, but they do so sooner than other inventors. This suggests that patents enable an exchange of inventions that would otherwise be kept secret, but small inventors may not benefit from this function disproportionately more than others. We consider an economy with a countably infinite number of consumers and pure public information goods. Each of these differentiated products is produced by a single monopoly firm that enters the market if it can cover costs. Thus, the product space is endogenous. We assume that the population of agents has diverse tastes, but bounded attention spans for content. We show that this implies that at all Pareto efficient allocations, all agents consume a finite number of public goods, and that each public good is consumed by a finite number of agents. In effect, these two taste assumptions turn pure public goods into what amount to club goods, despite the lack of rivalry in consumption or crowding of any type. Unfortunately, the equilibrium outcomes of Tiebout-like competition between public good providers do not satisfy the First Welfare Theorem. Even non-anonymous Lindahlian price systems are not sufficient to signal all profit opportunities to firms. Danish lawyers have long positioned themselves as fundamental pillars of the Rechtsstaat, portraying their independence and adherence to professional ideals as central to serving the public good. However, this traditional image has been increasingly challenged by the rise of large law firms taking advantage of deregulation and globalization. This has placed lawyers under a cross-pressure forcing them to compromise on their traditional defining characteristics. Large law firms, serving as advisors to clients such as major corporations and organizations, have distinguished themselves from the rest of the legal field with new professional projects. To regain some of the lost credibility, the largest law firms reformulated voluntary work as a professional project from being legal aid to individuals to US models of pro bono directed at NGOs and charity leading to further differentiation between lawyers. This article examines this dilemmatic cross-pressure between the differentiation of professional spaces in Denmark and the development of voluntary work as professional projects to regain the lost credibility as a profession working for the common good. This paper explores the narrative rationality and repeated expansion of the meta-narrative of the ‘Five Events of Da Yu’ resulted from the legend of ‘Da Yu Taming the Flood’. Guided by Fisher’s narrative paradigm, a hermeneutic analysis of the selected historical documents, archaeological discoveries, and commemorative items has found: on the one hand, coherence and fidelity have been observed abundantly with their respective criteria and standards materialized in the said meta-narrative. On the other hand, following a chronological expansion, the meta-narrative conveys the consistent themes of seeking concerted efforts in taming floods for the common good of all, while getting various tribes united and the first dynasty of China established. As a result, the analysis of the meta-narrative not only facilitates the development of an inner dialogue with ancient myths but also helps to bring together people across cultures in a universal world. Spirituality involves being in harmony with the cosmos or nature and a willingness to engage in good works for the sake of mankind; for instance, love for one another, care for the environment, and the production and protection of the common good for society. Spirituality could also be defined as the connectedness with nature or the cosmos, seeing beyond the circumstances of one’s limitation and the suffering one encounters (transcendence) and understanding one purpose and meaning of one existence. In an African context, spirituality is experienced by many people as being in touch with one’s spirit which is an indication of integration of the body with the spirit and without this spiritual aspect of the essence of oneself, it becomes natural to see and feel problem. When one is permanently established on the platform of the Transcendental Being, life is lived in eternal freedom and enjoyment of blissfulness throughout the day. In this vein, the self silently witnesses daily activity. This is the essence of TM practice where practitioners experience spiritual upliftment. Though much research has been done on TM globally, the spiritual lived experiences of the practitioners have not been adequately explored, especially in South Africa and Ghana. Therefore, the study sought to explore the spiritual lived experiences of TM practitioners in South Africa and Ghana. The study adopted the constructivist paradigm through the lens of phenomenology. In all, 28 participants took part in the study − 14 participants from South Africa and another 14 from Ghana. Open-ended questionnaires and semi-structured interviews were used to collect data for the study. Husserl’s transcendental phenomenological data analysis was used to analyze and synthesize the descriptions of the spiritual lived experiences of the TM practitioners. The results suggest that TM act as a catalyst for the spiritual growth of the participants from both countries and that they experienced spiritual upliftment with the practice of TM. However, two participants both females were of the view that TM has nothing to do with their spirituality. It is the recommendation of this study that people who seek a spiritual path to discover their purpose and meaning in life explore this technique although there are other paths toward spiritual enlightenment. AbstractThis article draws on findings from a qualitative study of academics’ role in higher education’s contribution to the public good based on 15 interviews with academics from two universities in South Africa. I argue that if higher education in South Africa is to transform for the public good, the transformation of the university academic staff needs to be taken seriously and move beyond diversity of race and gender. The findings of the study that underpins this article suggest that the attributes of academics must be considered in initiatives that seek to transform the academy. This has implications for meaningful transformation because diversity, in terms of race and gender, does not necessarily translate to transformation in practice. Based on these findings, I suggest what these attributes may be through the concept of “public good academics,” which the academics I interviewed associated with being progressive, reflexive, critically conscious, and socially competent. I conclude that public good academics are aptly positioned to engage in transformational practices. Therefore, the personal attributes of academics do matter and should not be ignored in our thinking and conversations about transformational practices in higher education, especially in South Africa—a country with a history of colonialism and apartheid that has shaped the higher education landscape. This paper fits in the theory of international agreements by studying the success of stable coalitions of agents seeking the preservation of a public good. Extending Baliga and Maskin, we consider a model of N$$ N $$ homogeneous agents with quasi‐linear utilities of the form uj(rj;r)=rα−rj$$ {u}_j\left({r}_j;r\right)={r}^{\alpha }-{r}_j $$, where r$$ r $$ is the aggregate contribution and the exponent α$$ \alpha $$ is the elasticity of the gross utility. When the value of the elasticity α$$ \alpha $$ increases in its natural range (0,1)$$ \left(0,1\right) $$, we prove the following five main results in the formation of stable coalitions: (i) the gap of cooperation, characterized as the ratio of the welfare of the grand coalition to the welfare of the competitive singleton coalition grows to infinity, which we interpret as a measure of the urge or need to save the public good; (ii) the size of stable coalitions increases from 1 up to N$$ N $$; (iii) the ratio of the welfare of stable coalitions to the welfare of the competitive singleton coalition grows to infinity; (iv) the ratio of the welfare of stable coalitions to the welfare of the grand coalition “decreases” (a lot), up to when the number of members of the stable coalition is approximately N/e$$ N/e $$ and after that it “increases” (a lot); and (v) the growth of stable coalitions occurs with a much greater loss of the coalition members when compared with free‐riders. Result (v) has two major drawbacks: (a) A priori, it is difficult to “convince” agents to be members of the stable coalition and (b) together with results (i) and (iv), it explains and leads to the “pessimistic” Barrett's paradox of cooperation, even in a case not much considered in the literature: The ratio of the welfare of the stable coalitions against the welfare of the grand coalition is small, even in the extreme case where there are few (or a single) free‐riders and the gap of cooperation is large. “Optimistically,” result (iii) shows that stable coalitions do much better than the competitive singleton coalition. This article reflects on the dynamics of the public sphere in the early modern period by analyzing the figure of the peasant and the notion of the common(s) in dialogue pamphlets. Beginning with a discussion of what it means to speak of a public sphere in relation to the early modern period it examines one of the most famous Reformation dialogues Karst-hans published anonymously in 1521 in Strasbourg. Just before the German Peasants' War (1524–26) the Lutheran dialogue polemically directed against the theologian and satirist Thomas Murner positions the peasant as a critically mature citizen with the hoe (Karst) symbolizing his potential militancy. This article specifically draws on the notion of publicity that the dialogue articulates. Using it as an example this article analyzes the transitions and mutual projections between fiction urban culture and peasant protest the structures of which are significant for the literary representation of agrarian protest far beyond the Reformation. In its final section this article closely examines the media genre of the dialogue pamphlet and outlines some horizons of its historical development up to the Enlightenment concerning its political use and its relation to the ideal of a dialogic and socially leveled public sphere. By arguing that there existed an implicit ideal of the public sphere as a common good in the early modern period the aim is also to clarify what distinguishes this early modern understanding of the public sphere from its conceptualization as a marketplace that has dominated our understanding of it since the Enlightenment. This past summer, my family attempted our first-ever cross-country road trip in an electric car—from our home in Houston to Los Angeles. The backstory is a bit complicated and there were some logistical reasons why it was necessary. But, if I'm being honest, we did it mostly to face our fears. We moved to Houston as a two-fossil fuel car household in 2009 and gradually morphed into a one-electric-car household over the following decade. But I could count on one hand the number of times we took our EV—a 2017 Chevrolet Bolt—outside the inner 610 loop. We had passed on opportunities to travel to places as close as Austin because of what is commonly known as "range anxiety." Maybe "range ignorance" would have been the better word. We really didn't know very much about the logistics of taking an EV on a long road trip. And "range guilt" was building, since there was plenty of information available about long-distance EV travel on the Internet. Our coping mechanism was telling ourselves that the technology was new and none of us were really technophiles. But that flew in the face of our self-imagination as climate communicators and activists. We fancied ourselves early adopters trying to raise awareness of transitioning to EVs as a public good. But it was hard to convince skeptical friends and family about the benefits of electric automobility if we didn't even go more than twenty miles away from our home charger. So, the time had come. This article analyses how populism is conceptualized and studied in International Relations (IR) and argues that it should be seen as a political logic instead of a political ideology. It does so by demonstrating that 'populist foreign policy' looks radically different in analyses of the populist left, refuting the possibility of any distinctly 'populist' foreign policy positions. We argue that large parts of IR scholarship practise a form of concept-stretching that undermines the quality of analysis as well as the ability to make meaningful policy recommendations. Using the empirical case-studies of the politician Bernie Sanders in the United States and the political party Podemos in Spain, the article demonstrates that populism does not translate into any shared ideological positions, but is a way of formulating and performing—in these cases—leftist politics through which political actors can interpellate and mobilize different societal groups and demands behind their political projects. In particular, the analysis debunks common assumptions about populism's alleged effects on foreign policy and dangers to pluralist democracy, and shows that populism neither necessarily opposes multilateralism, migration and global public good provision nor formulates an authoritarian claim to power. In its regulatory enterprise to improve the conditions of data sharing and reuse, the European Union has enacted new legislation: the Data Governance Act (DGA). The DGA envisages new forms of sharing public sector data (PSD). Based on a legal analysis of the DGA and an in-depth study of data governance literature, this paper highlights what is at stake in the new regulatory framework and argues that more than the mere openness of more PSD will be necessary to ensure that the European Union policy goals are achieved, especially those concerning enhancing innovation for the common good. From this perspective, the paper argues that the public data trust model of data governance and the Responsible Research and Innovation approach offer two powerful tools for public sector data governance. In this context, this paper contributes to the debate about new data governance models and discusses tools and frameworks enabling the use of data for the common good. Heritage-making's intrinsic dissonance has been thoroughly established in the field of critical heritage studies, and yet it is a reality that continues to be obscured in heritage practice in settler colonial cities. Authorised heritage discourse continues to project existing state-led systems of heritage-making as a self-evident 'public good' for current and future generations. In settler colonial cities, this increasingly includes attempts to incorporate Indigenous views and values into its framing. However, existing statutory processes that uphold normative approaches prove resilient to change. Continued prioritisation of tangible artefact amid private property rights impairs the heritage field's ability to acknowledge alternative possibilities and to genuinely engage in decolonising transformation. This paper examines three cases where heritage dissonance has erupted into protest and protection action outside of the authorised heritage discourse: the Old Swan Brewery in Perth, Western Australia; Ihumātao in Auckland, New Zealand; and the West Berkeley Shellmound in Berkeley, California. It analyses the contestation of values that led to protest action, what 'authorised' attempts were made to heritagise each case and to what result. In so doing, the paper demonstrates how existing processes of statutory heritage-making continue to be inadequate for Indigenous and emerging heritage aspirations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article uses the work of Willy Brown, John Purcell, Linda Dickens, and Keith Sisson to identify the critique of management within pluralist industrial relations. The notion of the 'fallible manager' captures the essence of this critique. Within the pluralist tradition, fallible managers are identified as the source of industrial relations problems and are also deemed incapable of reversing the harms they cause in the absence of supportive state intervention. While managers are deemed fallible in the pluralist tradition, however, management typically is not regarded as illegitimate and in a reformed institutional context is capable of managing for the common good, to generate 'shared value.' We exploit a rich dataset on Italian museums to investigate whether corporate museums' service provision is quantitatively different from the provision by the rest of private museums and by the three different types of Italian publicly owned museums (whose classification is by organisational mode: traditional, autonomous, and outsourced). We consider service provision in the dimensions of core museum functions (research, collection management, dissemination) and visitor friendliness, and we also focus on digital services. We use count data models estimation methods and include controls referring to museums' characteristics and contextual factors to account for possible confounding effects. Our analysis reveals that corporate museums do not provide more core services than other museums, as expected given the public good component of this category of services. Contrary to expectations, we find that corporate museums are not among the museums providing the largest number of services enhancing visitor friendliness. Finally, corporate museums provide more digital services than traditional public museums and private museums owned by churches, and not less than other museum types. We argue that this latter evidence may come from their interaction with the parent firm. Corporate museums' higher levels of digitalisation may be seen as the effect of a knowledge spillover between the more profit-oriented business world and the non-profit cultural sector. This article provides a review of different global financial institutions and how they are making progress towards the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) through examination of their mission statements, stated purposes, financial products & services, and sustainable development projects. Through archival research, this study conducts an empirical investigation of how financial institutions are making progress on global environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues. For each type of international financial institution, this study presents a prominent sample entity, evidence of value creation for the common good, and relationship to specific UN SDGs. This study provides evidence of different global institutions financing sustainability projects that create value for the common good with long‐term impact horizons. The evidence suggests that the combination of social factors and environmental factors outweigh the financial factors in the realized projects. This study proposes a novel approach towards comparing financial institutions in creating value for the common good based on the sustainable finance framework of Schoenmaker (2017, Investing for the common good: A sustainable finance framework. In Morgantown, West Virginia, curbside recycling is available to residents who reside within the city limits. However, residents in Monongalia County who reside outside the Morgantown city limits are expected to bring their recyclables to a drop‐off site which discourages people from recycling in general. Moreover, there exists a disparity between residents within and outside the Morgantown city limits in terms of rights to have access to curbside recycling. This study presents the economic value of curbside recycling at the County level. Furthermore, the paper presents a framework and empirical analysis that separate the value of the improved program as a club good and the value of the program as a public good, using a survey data from Morgantown and Monongalia County in collaboration with a local waste and recycling service provider.
