The authors of this featured article (Joo, Jeung, & Yoon, 2010) respond to calls for further examination of how individual differences and workplace environment jointly impact organizational behavior. The authors integrate social psychology and management research to examine employee behavior and its relation to human resource development. Specifically, the authors seek to explicate how personality and job context influence individual performance. The authors suggest intrinsically motivated employees are valuable assets who are able to accomplish necessary tasks without consuming considerable organizational resources (e.g., supervisory time, attention, etc.). Because the performance of intrinsically motivated employees ultimately benefits the organization, human resource professionals should understand and support antecedents that empower their most capable employees. The authors investigate two factors that may contribute to intrinsic motivation, self-concept (i.e., core self-evaluations), and job context (i.e., autonomy). They also discuss potential implications of their findings. The authors integrate a review of extant literature, utilize generally accepted methodologies, identify threats to the validity of the study's conclusions, reflect on possible limitations of the project, and present potential areas for future research. In this invited reaction, the author discusses a few concerns that may diminish the impact of the featured article's potential contribution. Specifically, issues arise in terms of the theoretical development of the hypotheses as well as the methodological execution that empirically tests them.

Substantial research has been dedicated to examining and combating respondent misrepresentation (i.e., "faking") on personality assessments. Two approaches to combat faking that have garnered particular attention include: (a) designing systems to identify likely fakers and (b) developing difficult-to-fake measures. Consistent with suggestions to combine these strategies, the present article examines a new faking detection system specifically designed for a difficult-to-fake measure (i.e., the Conditional Reasoning Test for Aggression; CRT-A). Four studies (a) help elucidate the conditions under which the CRT-A is fakeable, (b) provide initial construct validity evidence for the faking detection system developed here, (c) examine the effects of faking and faking detection on the CRT-A's criterion-oriented validity, and (d) show that participants identify CRT-based faking detection items at worse-than-chance levels even when they are fully informed about how these items work. Taken together, these studies reinforce the importance of maintaining the indirect nature of CRTs but also show that the faking detection system developed here represents a promising method of identifying those who may have used inside information to manipulate their scores. Although considerable research has investigated the influence of institutional pressures on environmental practices, few studies have examined its impact on innovation among third-party logistics (3PL) providers. Moreover, extant scholarship equivocates on the relationships between various institutional pressures and green innovation. Different industries develop unique responses to their contexts and 3PL providers may counter environmental issues unlike other sectors (e.g., manufacturing). Integrating the institutional theory and natural-resource-based view, this paper examines green innovations of 3PL providers as a response to their institutional pressures and to gain competitive advantages, as well as explores the contingent effect of market uncertainty. Based on survey data acquired from 165 3PL providers in China, the empirical results suggest customer pressure and competitive pressure significantly impel 3PL providers to adopt a green innovation, while to this point, regulatory pressure has not affected such innovation. Additionally, green innovation positively affects financial performance for 3PL providers in China. Moreover, market uncertainty alleviates the driving effect of customer pressure on green innovation, but amplifies its contributive effect on performance. We examined when job embeddedness might serve as a boundary condition between interactional fairness and employee behavior. Specifically, we explored whether elements of affective attachment associated with job embeddedness moderated relations of supervisors' interactional fairness with citizenship behavior and production deviance. Results from a field and a scenario study supported the idea that interactional fairness exerts a stronger effect on these outcomes for employees embedded in their jobs than for their less attached coworkers. A multifactorial between-groups experiment examined the effects of person-focused organizational citizenship behaviours (OCBP) on the performance of teams characterized by different levels of virtuality and task interdependence. Results reveal in low virtual teams the moderating effects of task interdependence on the OCBP–team performance relationship are positive; however, these effects are reversed in high virtual teams. Using social presence and task–technology fit theories, our results indicate that task context affects how OCBP impacts team performance, particularly across different levels of team virtuality. Thirty years have passed since Pfeffer and Salancik's seminal work on resource dependence theory (RDT). During this time RDT has been applied broadly across the research domain to explain how organizations reduce environmental interdependence and uncertainty. In this review, the authors assess the conceptual development, empirical research, and application of RDT. They structure their review around the five options that Pfeffer and Salancik propose firms can enact to minimize environmental dependences: (a) mergers/vertical integration, (b) joint ventures and other interorganizational relationships, (c) boards of directors, (d) political action, and (e) executive succession. Analytic modeling of radiation from sources or scattering by obstacles near submerged layered environments generally leads to Fourier-type spectral integrals with integrands that contain pole and branch point singularities. In the high-frequency range, there are spectral intervals in which the integrands are highly oscillatory, thereby making their numerical evaluation problematic, especially in the vicinity of singularities that lie on the Fourier path in the absence of dissipation. Various methods of performing the numerics are examined, including deformation of the real-axis integration path into a contour in the complex plane, on which the integrand has weak or no oscillations and is exponentially damped away from a local maximum. By comparing the corresponding steepest descent and stationary phase analytic approximations with the numerics, one may calibrate these algorithms for accuracy, especially when saddle (stationary) points and singularities are in close proximity. The physical wave phenomena associated with these alternative analytic models are discussed. Attention is given to the separation of the integrand into weakly and highly oscillatory portions, as required in the analytic approximations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In scattering from an insonified submerged elastic layer, whose surface is perturbed with periodic or quasiperiodic variations, the resulting Bragg modes are expected to couple to the leaky modes that can be radiated by the unperturbed smooth layer. If these two distinct but coupled phenomenologies can be separately identified and extracted from acoustic scattering data by ''wave-oriented'' processing, one may gain discriminants for imaging the properties of the elastic layer and of its surface topology. A simple two-dimensional model-a finite array of filamentary scatterers on the insonified face of a fluid layer-has been investigated previously [T. Hsu, L. B. Felsen, and L. Carin, to appear in IEEE Trans. Antennas Propag.]. It has been shown that windowed-transform processing of data observed along a track parallel to the layer extracts space-wave-number phase space distributions in which the leaky mode and Bragg mode footprints are clearly separated; these features are poorly resolved in the unprocessed data. The present paper explores these phenomenologies and the corresponding phase-space processing when the fluid layer is replaced by an elastic layer with its far richer variety of layer-guided modes. Parametric studies show how the space-wave-number distributions are affected by the processing window size, the physical parameters of the layer, and the size and spacing of the filament array.
