4. Higher Education during the Pandemic: The Predictive Factors of Learning Effectiveness in COVID-19 Online Learning

Abstract

The global coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak forced a shift from face-to-face education to online learning in higher education settings around the world. From the outset, COVID-19 online learning (CoOL) has differed from conventional online learning due to the limited time that students, instructors, and institutions had to adapt to the online learning platform. Such a rapid transition of learning modes may have affected learning effectiveness, which is yet to be investigated. Thus, identifying the predictive factors of learning effectiveness is crucial for the improvement of CoOL. In this study, we assess the significance of university support, student-student dialogue, instructor-student dialogue, and course design for learning effectiveness, measured by perceived learning outcomes, student initiative, and satisfaction. A total of 409 university students completed our survey. Our findings indicated that student-student dialogue and course design were predictive factors of perceived learning outcomes whereas instructor-student dialogue was a determinant of student initiative. University support had no significant relationship with either perceived learning outcomes or student initiative. In terms of learning effectiveness, both perceived learning outcomes and student initiative determined student satisfaction. The results identified that student-student dialogue, course design, and instructor-student dialogue were the key predictive factors of CoOL learning effectiveness, which may determine the ultimate success of CoOL.

6. In Everlasting Fight against Academic Procrastination: The Roles of Classroom Engagement and Internal Locus of Control

Abstract

This study aims to test the hypothesis that classroom engagement mediates the relationship between students' internal locus of control and academic procrastination. As many as 302 students from a private university between 18 to 26 years of age were recruited to respond to Internal-External Locus of control Scale, Classroom Engagement Inventory, and Academic Procrastination scale. Bootstrapping analyses were conducted by utilizing PROCESS Macro model 4 in SPSS software, and the results showed that the mediator variable fully mediates the link between the predictor and outcome variables. In other words, the direct effect of internal locus of control on academic procrastination was no longer significant when controlling for classroom engagement. Further discussion, implications and suggestions were presented at the end of the article.

Abstract

The interplay between the oxidation state and the optical properties of molecules plays a key role for applications in displays, sensors or molecular-based memories. The fundamental mechanisms occurring at the level of a single-molecule have been difficult to probe. We used a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) to characterize and control the fluorescence of a single Zn-phthalocyanine radical cation adsorbed on a NaCl-covered Au(111) sample. The neutral and oxidized states of the molecule were identified on the basis of their fluorescence spectra that revealed very different emission energies and vibronic fingerprints. The emission of the charged molecule was controlled by tuning the thickness of the insulator and the plasmons localized at the apex of the STM tip. Abstract

Objective: This purpose of this paper is to describe the characteristics of recovered Lake Trout Salvelinus namaycush populations in Lake Superior by describing its population dynamics, ecology, and recent research and management activities since 1993, when Lake Trout were declared rehabilitated. Methods: Data from commercial fisheries, recreational fisheries, agency stocking reports, and natural resource agency fishery‐independent survey data along with published research findings on lean Lake Trout in Lake Superior between 1993 and 2022 were synthesized and reported. Result: Currently, Lake Trout populations are self‐sustaining and lightly exploited with only a few areas with elevated total mortality rates. The total annual mortality has been far below the target maximum range of 42–45%. Furthermore, stocking of hatchery Lake Trout is no longer necessary. Conclusion: We have learned from research and management experience that the regulatory role of Lake Trout in the Great Lakes is critical to proper ecosystem function. Thus, continued commitment from natural resource agencies to cooperate and implement effective management actions is required to preserve the accomplishments of lakewide recovery of Lake Trout populations. Abstract

To understand the clinical features, angiographic involvement patterns and outcomes of Takayasu Arteritis (TA) in Malaysian patients. This was a retrospective study of 85 TA patients from 20 tertiary rheumatology centers in Malaysia from 1990 until 2020. Demographic information, clinical features, angiographic patterns, treatment and comorbidities were analyzed. The female-to-male ratio was 13.1:1. The age at disease onset was 27.47 ± 10.4 years. The duration of delay in diagnosis was 6 ± 27.5 months. 48.2 % were Malay, 12.9 % Chinese, 23.5 % Indian and 14.3 % other ethnicities. Hypertension emerged as the most common comorbidity (52.9 %), followed by dyslipidemia (29.4 %). The most prevalent angiographic pattern was Type V (55.3 %), with left subclavian artery (65.9 %) and left carotid (55.3 %) being the most commonly involved vessels. Glucocorticoids constituted the mainstay of treatment; however, approximately half of the patients required treatment with methotrexate and azathioprine. There were six deaths, primarily attributed to coronary artery disease and infections. Surgical interventions, including angioplasty and bypass surgery, were performed on 11 patients. Out of 44 pregnancies, 79.5 % were successful. This study revealed a pattern of TA disease in Malaysia that aligns with findings from other cohort studies. The most prevalent angiographic type observed was type V, with the subclavian and carotid arteries being the most commonly involved vessels among TA patients in Malaysia. This research contributes to a better understanding of the clinical presentations observed over the past three decades, offering valuable insights for the improved management of TA patients in Malaysia. 30. Impact of elevated transmitral mean gradient on cardiovascular mortality after transcatheter mitral valve implantation.

Abstract

Transcatheter mitral valve implantation (TMVI) has emerged as an alternative to surgery in high risk patients with failing mitral bioprosthesis or annuloplasties. The presence of an elevated mean gradient > 5 mmHg after the procedure has been defined as an unsuccessful procedure but the impact and outcomes of an elevated mean gradient after TMVI have not been studied. In all, 175 patients undergoing TMVI from 2010 to 2024 were included. Patients were classified in three groups according to mean gradient after the procedure: group 1 < 5 mmHg, group 2 between 5 and 10 mmHg and group 3 ≥ 10 mmHg. The median age was 69 (52.5–80) years. Indications for TMVI were bioprosthesis failure in 131 patients (74.9%) and ring annuloplasty failure in 44 patients (25.1%). 155 (88.6%) patients were in NYHA class III or IV. Fifty patients were in group 1, 111 in group 2 and 14 in group 3, without any difference in baseline characteristics (except for age [ P = 0.02]) or procedural findings. At 30 days, the rates of all-cause mortality (respectively 2.6%, 0% and 0%, P = 0.3), rehospitalization for heart failure (respectively 7,7%, 7.4% and 20%, P = 0.62), paravalvular leak (4.6%, 16.8%, 20%, P = 0.41), LVOT obstruction (respectively 0%, 2.1% and 10%, P = 0.48) or valve thrombosis (respectively 11.6%, 4.2% and 0%, P = 0.48) were similar in the three groups. At a median follow-up of 3 years, 43 patients have died (35 for cardiovascular reasons) with a cumulative rate of all-cause mortality at 1, 2 and 3 years of 18.7%, 19.2% and 25.4% respectively. An elevated mean gradient was associated with increased risk of cardiovascular mortality with a HR of 1.16 (1.03–1.31, P = 0.02, Fig. 1). An improvement of NYHA class was observed in the two groups with mean gradient < 10 mmHg at one month and one year (P < 0.01) compared to baseline without any difference for the group 3. At one year, median systolic pulmonary arterial pressure also significantly improved in group 1 (from 50 mmHg (43–65) in baseline to respectively 45 mmHg (36–55), P < 0.01), in group 2 (from 55 mmHg [45–70] in baseline to 41 mmHg [35–55], P < 0.01]) without improvement in group 3 (from 55 mmHg (50–62) to 51 mmHg (35–58), P = 1). An elevated mean gradient post-TMVI ≥ 10 mmHg was associated with cardiovascular mortality up to 3 years and without significant functional improvement. Abstract

Aim: At presentation, 15–20% of patients with rectal cancer already have synchronous liver metastases. The aim of this study was to determine the surgical and survival outcomes in patients with advanced rectal cancer who underwent combined pelvic exenteration and liver (oligometastatic) resection. Method: Data from 20 international institutions that performed simultaneous pelvic exenteration and liver resection between 2007 and 2017 were accumulated. Primarily, we examined perioperative outcomes, morbidity and mortality. We also assessed the impact that margin status had on survival. Results: Of 128 patients, 72 (56.2%) were men with a median age of 60 years [interquartile range (IQR) 15 years]. The median size of the liver oligometastatic deposits was 2 cm (IQR 1.8 cm). The median duration of surgery was 406 min (IQR 240 min), with a median blood loss of 1090 ml (IQR 2010 ml). A negative resection margin (R0 resection) was achieved in 73.5% of pelvic exenterations and 66.4% of liver resections. The 30-day mortality rate was 1.6%, and 32% of patients had a major postoperative complication. The 5-year overall survival for patients in whom an R0 resection of both primary and metastatic disease was achieved was 54.6% compared with 20% for those with an R1/R2 resection (P = 0.006). Conclusion: Simultaneous pelvic exenteration and liver resection is feasible, with acceptable morbidity and mortality. Simultaneous resection should only be performed where an R0 resection of both pelvic and hepatic disease is anticipated.

35. Understanding the Ways in Which Design Features of Educational Websites Impact upon Student Learning Outcomes in Blended Learning Environments

Abstract

This study investigated the effectiveness, in terms of the attainment of relevant learning outcomes, of the types of learning promoted by educational features commonly incorporated in course management systems. Twenty-one courses with significant use of the Internet, but with face-to-face teaching as the predominant instructional mode, were investigated. Five hundred and ninety-five students taking these 21 courses completed a questionnaire which gave feedback on the extent of use of and quality of implementation of internet features, as well as their perception of the attainment of outcomes relating to approaches to learning, communication skills and understanding of content. A confirmatory factor analysis of scales pertinent to information presentation and constructive dialogue features showed a very poor fit to the data, indicating that the two types of function did not act in concert. Structural equation modelling was used to test instructional models in presage-process-product format for "information" and "dialogue" features. The information one showed a marginal fit to the data, but the dialogue one a very good fit. This shows that using the Internet for presenting information in a blended environment does not seem to effectively help students achieve learning outcomes. Using features which promote constructive dialogue and interactive learning activities encourages a deep approach to learning, the development of communication skills and enhanced understanding of content. Found that 3-year-olds performed significantly poorer than 4-year-olds on all tasks, suggesting a marked transition in children's ability to recognize the origin of their modality-specific knowledge between 3 and 4 years.
