Abstract

The development of bio-based ionic liquids (ILs) has attracted a great deal of interest in recent years. The so called long chain fatty acid ionic liquids (LCFA-ILs) represent a bio-based subfamily of hydrophobic ionic liquids. Here, a new preparation of the three major classes of LCFA-ILs (phosphonium, ammonium, imidazolium) is presented with the aim to overcome previous environmental synthetic issues. The undeniable interesting properties and potential applications of the LCFA-ILs often led to the underestimation of the drawbacks related to their synthetic pathways. Pure LCFA-ILs as well as cheaper mixture of LCFA-ILs have been obtained in a single step, in almost quantitative yields, and without production of waste water. 12. Temperature effects on the viscosity and the wavelength-dependent refractive index of imidazolium-based ionic liquids with a phosphorus-containing anion.

Abstract

A systematic study on the viscosity and refractive index of 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium based ionic liquids (alkyl = methyl, butyl and hexyl) combined with three phosphorus containing anions, i.e. dimethylphosphate, methyl methylphosphonate and methylphosphonate, is reported. Experimental measurements account for temperature effects, while the refractive index is determined at multiple wavelengths in the visible and near infrared region. Despite the structural similarity of these anions, significant differences in the physical properties of the resulting ILs are identified, along with the clear trend of viscosity increase – and refractive index decrease – with increasing alkyl chain length on the cation. Abstract

N -Alkyl- N -methylmorpholinium and N -alkyl substituted 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane (DABCO) based ionic liquids (ILs), N -alkyl-DABCO, bearing short alkyl chains are characterised by a low toxicity to Vibrio fischeri , although toxicity significantly increases on increasing the alkyl chain length. Alkyl chain length affects also biodegradability in the 28 days tests; the higher level of biodegradation was found in both the series in the case of the ethyl (C2) derivatives. In the case of N -ethyl DABCO based IL, although biodegradability is still around 40%, and consequently this IL cannot be classified as “readily biodegradable”, this value is similar to the more biodegradable functionalized imidazolium based ILs.
