The mixed-valent species Fc(4-Py)Ru(NH3)5 super 3+ and Fc(3-Py)Ru(NH3)5 super 3+ exhibit Robin and Day class II behavior, with the oxidized sites ruthenium-centered. The intervalence transfer bands are solvent-dependent and vary almost exclusively with delta/epsilon/sub 1/2degrees, epsilon/sub 1/2degrees Fe(super III)/Fe(super II) - epsilon/sub 1/2degrees Ru(super III)/Ru(super II) that decrease linearly with Gutmann solvent donor number. Experimental values of solvent reorganization energies agree well with those from Hush theory calculations.

Research has been conducted on bis-ethylenediamine- and tetraammine-bipyridineruthenium(II) complexes. The authors have investigated the metal-to-ligand charge-transfer emission spectra of these complexes, and present the results.

A novel CuI cluster, Cu16L16 ·2CH3COCH3 ( 1), derived from a cyclohexylmonothiocarbonate ligand (L) was synthesized and structurally characterized. Coordinated-solvent-replacement reactions of 1 with various N-donor ligands to provide 2- 5 were demonstrated. Clusters 1- 3 and 5 display photoluminescence, whereas 4 is nonemissive. The binuclear complexes, trans-(isn)(NH3)4RuNCFe [image omitted] (n = 2-, 1-, 0), were prepared both in aqueous solutions and as isolated salts. Their properties, particularly that of the mixed-valence species (M), were characterized by UV-Vis, infrared, electrochemical and kinetic studies. The results suggested that Ru(III)-Fe(II) was both thermodynamically and kinetically stable oxidation states. The extent of delocalization of M was estimated by analysis of the intervalence band on the basis of Hush's theory. The stabilization of M with respect to its oxidation state isomer (M') was investigated and it was found that the electrostatic effect associated with the net charges of metal moieties constituted the dominant factor governing the stability of M.
