Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often experience lifelong social communication challenges and are more vulnerable to school bullying. Addressing their social difficulties and school bullying requires evidence‐based interventions. PEERS® (Program for the Education and Enrichment of Relational Skills) was adapted and translated for Taiwanese adolescents. This randomized controlled study aimed to examine the effectiveness of the Taiwanese version of PEERS® in reducing school bullying and enhancing social function among autistic adolescents. Twenty‐one autistic adolescents (mean age 14.29 ± 1.67 years; female n = 733.33%) were randomized to a treatment group (TG, n = 10) or a delayed treatment control group (DTG, n = 11). The outcome measures (school bullying, social challenges, social skills knowledge, and social skills performance) were assessed at baseline, post‐treatment, and follow‐up. The group and time interaction analyses revealed greater magnitudes of reduction in general school bullying (p < 0.001), victimization (p < 0.001), perpetration (p = 0.012), social challenges (p = 0.001), and peer conflicts (p < 0.001), and improvement in social knowledge (p < 0.001) in the TG group than the DTG group. The findings suggest that the PEERS® program tailored for Taiwanese adolescents is effective in reducing school bullying, decreasing social challenges, and enhancing social skills among autistic adolescents, with very large effect sizes (Cohen's d ranging from 1.19 to 2.88). Consequently, participation in the PEERS® program is recommended for adolescents with social difficulties to improve their social communication and interactions to offset school bullying and other social challenges related to adverse outcomes. Lay Summary: This study examined the effectiveness of the PEERS® program, adapted for Taiwanese autistic teenagers. The findings suggest that the program effectively improves social function and reduces the risk of bullying in school for these teens. Teenagers with social difficulties, especially those on the autism spectrum, should be encouraged to participate in the PEERS® program, which provides essential skills and strategies to cope with social difficulties and school bullying. Sedimentary phosphorus (P) forms are important representatives of P sources and their bioavailability as well as the potential of sediments to release P in water. In this study, surface sediments along a transect of the Changjiang Estuary and two transects along the Andong salt marsh in the southwest of Hangzhou Bay were subjected to the elucidation of sedimentary P species using the standards, measurements, and testing (SMT) and sequential extraction (SEDEX) methods. The results showed that the mean sedimentary P forms elucidated by the SMT method were as follows: organic P (OP; ∼11–14 mg/kg; ∼30–45% of total P; TP) > apatite P (∼5–15 mg/kg; ∼21–36% TP) > Fe/Al-P (∼8–14 mg/kg; ∼31–34% TP), with inorganic P (IP) composing 54–70% of TP. The mean sedimentary P forms elucidated by the SEDEX method were as follows: authigenic P (∼54–68 mg/kg; ∼41–46% TP) > extractable P (Ex-P; ∼36–53 mg/kg; ∼28–34%) > Fe-P (∼21–27 mg/kg; ∼13–19%) > OP (∼8.7–13 mg/kg; ∼5–8%) > detrital P (De-P; ∼2 mg/kg; ∼1–2% TP), with IP composed of ∼91–94% TP. These results showed that the SEDEX method elucidated higher concentrations of sedimentary P forms as well as the TP from these coastal sediments although the SMT method had the advantage of being more economic and faster. The results of both the SMT and SEDEX methods showed that the Andong salt marsh and Changjiang Estuary sediments had much bioavailable P. The mean percentages of bioavailable P from the SMT and SEDEX methods were ∼64–74% and 52–56% of TP, respectively, indicating that these sediments were prone to release P to the coastal areas.

Phytochemical investigation on the aerial parts of Salvia deserta led to the isolation of eight new pentacyclic triterpenoids including three oleanane- (1 − 3) and five ursane-type (4 − 8) triterpenoids, whose structures were elucidated based on extensive spectroscopic analysis and quantum chemical calculation. Weak immunosuppressive potency was observed for compounds 1, 2, and 4 − 8 via inhibiting the secretion of cytokines TNF-α and IL-6 in LPS-induced macrophages RAW264.7 at 20 μM. Background: Hemorrhoids, a gastrointestinal tract disorder, are common during pregnancy. However, large-scale epidemiological studies on hemorrhoids during pregnancy are limited. Therefore, this study used analyzed data from a nationwide population-based database to investigate the prevalence, characteristics, and treatment of hemorrhoids in Taiwan. Materials and Methods: This retrospective population-based study used data from the National Health Insurance Research Database and Taiwan Birth Certificate Application to collect the medical records of women who were pregnant at any time during 2009–2018. Hemorrhoids was defined by International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM) (455. X) and International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM) (K64.X, O22.4X) with related treatment. Results: We enrolled 1,608,804 deliveries in 1,070,708 women. The proportion of hemorrhoids increased with age in both primipara and multipara women. Of the pregnant women, 31% received oral medication, and 93.2% used the topical ointment to treat their hemorrhoids. Few patients (1.8%) required procedure or surgery during pregnancy, and 41.4% of those patients underwent procedure or surgery in their first trimester. The cumulative incidence of hemorrhoids during pregnancy was significantly higher in women with a history of hemorrhoids and those with multifetal pregnancies. No significant difference in the incidence of hemorrhoids was observed between multiparous and primiparous women. Conclusion: Women with a history of hemorrhoids or those carrying multiple fetuses had an increased risk of hemorrhoids during pregnancy. The most commonly used treatment for hemorrhoids during pregnancy was topical ointments, with only a small proportion (1.8%) of patients requiring procedure or surgery. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Isorhamnetin (IRh), which has a wide range of pharmacological effects, is one of the most significant active components in the fruits of Hippophae rhamnoides L. and the leaves of Ginkgo biloba L. It protects the heart and brain, in addition to possessing anti-tumor, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, organ protection, and anti-obesity properties. We sought to assess IRh's anti-psoriatic activity, explore its immunomodulatory properties in reducing the severity of psoriatic symptoms, and evaluate its potential immunotherapeutic effects. We used IRh to treat imiquimod (IMQ)-induced psoriasis in BALB/C mice and examined the underlying mechanisms. The outcomes demonstrated that IRh reduced epidermal hyperplasia, lowered PASI scores, and improved histopathological psoriasiform lesions in IMQ-induced mice. IRh attenuated the accumulation of malondialdehyde (MDA), and also reversed the reduction caused by IMQ of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) in skin tissues. Additionally, IRh effectively inhibited IMQ's ability to increase proinflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α, IL-6, IL-17A, and transcription factor NF-κB. Furthermore, IRh significantly reduced the percentage of Th1 and Th17 in the spleens of mice treated with IMQ and suppressed the maturation of splenic dendritic cells. Overall, our research suggests that IRh protects against oxidative stress and inflammation in the pathogenesis of psoriasis, with potential for the development of new and potent medication for the treatment of psoriasis. Based on the observational hourly precipitation data and the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) Reanalysis 5 (ERA5) products from 2006 to 2020, 22 rainstorm processes in the eastern foot of Helan Mountain are objectively classified by using the hierarchical clustering method, and the circulation characteristics of different patterns are comparatively analyzed in this study. The results show that the occurrences of rainstorm processes in the eastern foot of Helan Mountain are most closely related to three circulation patterns. Patterns I and III mainly occur in July and August, with similar zonal circulations in synoptic backgrounds. Specifically, the South Asia high and the western Pacific subtropical high are stronger and more northward than those in normal years. The frontal systems in westerlies are inactive, while the water vapor from the ocean surface in the south is mainly transported to the rainstorm area by the southerly jet stream at 700 hPa. The dynamic lifting anomalies are relatively weak, the instability of atmospheric stratification is anomalously strong, and thus the localized severe convective rainstorm is more significant. Comparatively, rainstorm processes of pattern I are accompanied by stronger and deeper ascending motions, and the warm-sector rainstorm is more extreme. Pattern III shows a stronger and deeper convective instability, accompanied by larger low-level moisture. Rainstorm processes of pattern II mainly occur in early summer and early autumn, presenting a meridional circulation pattern of high in the east and low in the west in terms of geopotential height. Moreover, the two low-level jets transporting the water vapor northward from the ocean on the east of China encounter with the frontal systems in westerlies, which makes the ascending motion in pattern II anomalously strong and deep. The relatively weak instability of atmospheric stratification causes weak convection and long-lasting precipitation formed by the confluence of cold air and warm air. Hydrous ferric oxide (HFO)-impregnated agarose beads were prepared as an adsorbent to reduce As(III) concentration in the pharmaceutical wastewater effluent generated from the manufacturing process of an arsenic-containing chemotherapeutic drug. The adsorbent was prepared by immersing wet agarose beads into FeCl3 (aq), followed by another immersion into NaOH (aq), resulting in HFO precipitation directly within the agarose beads. The As(III) adsorption rate of HFO-impregnated agarose beads was determined to be external diffusion-limited, and having a Langmuir maximum adsorption capacity of 76.1 mg As(III)/g. Passing 6 L of the pharmaceutical wastewater through a packed column filled with the adsorbent in an upflow mode of 50 mL/min repeatedly for five times resulted in the reduction of As(III) concentration from 250 to 10 μg of As(III)/L of H2O. Column desorption was performed by passing 0.6 L of 0.1 M NaOH (aq) through the column in an upflow mode of 50 mL/min repeatedly for five times to regenerate the As(III)-adsorbed HFO-impregnated agarose beads. Chemical characterizations revealed that the As(III) species were adsorbed on HFO by the "inner-sphere" bidentate complexation via ligand exchange or "outer-sphere" association via electrostatic interaction, while the "outer-sphere"-associated As(III) species were most likely desorbed.
