Abstract

Scalable graph states are essential for measurement-based quantum computation and many entanglement-assisted applications in quantum technologies. Generation of these multipartite entangled states requires a controllable and efficient quantum device with delicate design of generation protocol. Here we propose to prepare high-fidelity and scalable graph states in one and two dimensions, which can be tailored in an atom-nanophotonic cavity via state carving technique. We propose a systematic protocol to carve out unwanted state components, which facilitates scalable graph states generations via adiabatic transport of a definite number of atoms in optical tweezers. An analysis of state fidelity is also presented, and the state preparation probability can be optimized via multiqubit state carvings and sequential single-photon probes. Our results showcase the capability of an atom-nanophotonic interface for creating graph states and pave the way toward novel problem-specific applications using scalable high-dimensional graph states with stationary qubits., Comment: 5 figures with supplemental material

Abstract

This White Paper presents the community inputs and scientific conclusions from the Hot and Cold QCD Town Meeting that took place September 23-25, 2022 at MIT, as part of the Nuclear Science Advisory Committee (NSAC) 2023 Long Range Planning process. A total of 424 physicists registered for the meeting. The meeting highlighted progress in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) nuclear physics since the 2015 LRP (LRP15) and identified key questions and plausible paths to obtaining answers to those questions, defining priorities for our research over the coming decade. In defining the priority of outstanding physics opportunities for the future, both prospects for the short (~ 5 years) and longer term (5-10 years and beyond) are identified together with the facilities, personnel and other resources needed to maximize the discovery potential and maintain United States leadership in QCD physics worldwide. This White Paper is organized as follows: In the Executive Summary, we detail the Recommendations and Initiatives that were presented and discussed at the Town Meeting, and their supporting rationales. Section 2 highlights major progress and accomplishments of the past seven years. It is followed, in Section 3, by an overview of the physics opportunities for the immediate future, and in relation with the next QCD frontier: the EIC. Section 4 provides an overview of the physics motivations and goals associated with the EIC. Section 5 is devoted to the workforce development and support of diversity, equity and inclusion. This is followed by a dedicated section on computing in Section 6. Abstract

We investigated the effects of low and high frequency isometric handgrip exercise training (IHGT) on resting blood pressure, and the affective/perceptual responses during training. Sixty young normotensive adults were randomised to either a no-intervention control group (CON: n = 20; 12 female) or a group performing either two (LOW: n = 20; 18 female) or four (HIGH: n = 20; 13 female) sessions/week of IHGT for 4 weeks. IHGT involved 4 × 2-min holds at 30% maximal voluntary contraction using the dominant hand. Resting blood pressure was measured before and after training. Affective valence was measured during the first session of each training week. Systolic blood pressure was reduced following both LOW (adjusted mean change [95% CI]: −4.5 [−6.8, −2.2] mmHg) and HIGH (−5.3 [−7.6, −3.0] mmHg) frequency IHGT groups compared to CON (+0.5 [−1.8, 2.8] mmHg; p < 0.01), with no difference between LOW and HIGH. There were no changes in diastolic blood pressure. During the first session, affective valence decreased by 2.5 ± 2.6 units and became negative (lowest affect: −0.75 ± 1.84 units). However, affective responses improved as training progressed. Low and high frequency IHGT similarly reduce resting blood pressure in young normotensive adults. Abstract

The linear and nonlinear effects of hydrogen isotope species on ion temperature gradient (ITG) instability in the Large Helical Device (LHD) stellarator are studied using radially global gyrokinetic simulation. We found that the coupling range of linear toroidal harmonics depends on the ion mass of the hydrogen isotope. The growth rates of ITG mode are almost the same for H, D, and T plasmas, indicating a gyro-Bohm scaling of ion-mass dependence. The nonlinear electrostatic simulations show that the zonal flow breaks the radially elongated eigenmode structures and reduces the size of the turbulence eddies, which suppresses the turbulence and the ion heat transport in the LHD. The turbulence amplitude without the zonal flow is almost the same for H, D, and T plasmas, while it decreases with increasing ion mass of the hydrogen isotope when the zonal flow is present. The reduction of the turbulent transport with larger ion mass is mostly due to the enhancement of zonal flows by larger ion mass. The ion heat conductivity deviates from the gyro-Bohm scaling for both cases with and without the zonal flow. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We report a measurement of single top quark production in proton-antiproton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of \sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV using a data set corresponding to 7.5 fb-1 of integrated luminosity collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. We select events consistent with the single top quark decay process t \to Wb \to l{\nu}b by requiring the presence of an electron or muon, a large imbalance of transverse momentum indicating the presence of a neutrino, and two or three jets including at least one originating from a bottom quark. An artificial neural network is used to discriminate the signal from backgrounds. We measure a single top quark production cross section of 3.04+0.57-0.53 pb and set a lower limit on the magnitude of the coupling between the top quark and bottom quark |Vtb| > 0.78 at the 95% credibility level., Comment: Version appearing in Physical Review Letters

Abstract

The angular distributions of muons from Upsilon(1S,2S,3S) to mu+mu- decays are measured using data from proton anti-proton collisions at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6.7 /fb and collected with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. This analysis is the first to report the full angular distributions as functions of transverse momentum pT for the Upsilon mesons in both the Collins-Soper and s-channel helicity frames. This is also the first measurement of spin alignment of Upsilon(3S) mesons. Within the kinematic range of Upsilon rapidity |y|<0.6 and pT up to 40 GeV/c, the angular distributions are found to be nearly isotropic., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev. Lett

Abstract

A search for a narrow Higgs boson resonance in the diphoton mass spectrum is presented based on data corresponding to 7.0 fb^-1 of integrated luminosity from p-pbar collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV collected by the CDF experiment. No evidence of such a resonance is observed, and upper limits are set on the cross section times branching ratio of the resonant state as a function of Higgs boson mass. The limits are interpreted in the context of the standard model and one fermiophobic benchmark model where the data exclude fermiophobic Higgs bosons with masses below 114 GeV/c^2 at a 95% Bayesian credibility level., Comment: Submitted to Phys. Abstract

We present the results of a search for pair production of a heavy top-like (t') quark decaying to Wq final states using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.6 fb-1 collected by the CDF II detector in pp collisions at {\surd}s = 1.96 TeV. We perform parallel searches for t' \to Wb and t' \to Wq (where q is a generic down-type quark) in events containing a lepton and four or more jets. By performing a fit to the two-dimensional distribution of total transverse energy versus reconstructed t quark mass, we set upper limits on the t \bar{t} production cross section and exclude a standard model fourth-generation t' quark decaying to W b (W q) with mass below 358 (340) GeV/c2 at 95% CL., Comment: submitted to Phys. Abstract

This article presents a study on the synthesis and character of a new organic-inorganic hybrid [4FBzTPP]2[CuBr4] (1) ([4FBzTPP]+ is 4-fluorobenzyltriphenylphosphinium) by XRD, SEM, FTIR and UV-Vis. The XRD analysis showed that the hybrid 1 belongs to the triclinic space group P21 with b = 8.8600(10) Å, c = 16.4867(17) Å, α = 16.639(2)°, β = 96.342(4)°, V = 2415.6(5) Å3, and Z = 2. The hybrid consists of two [4FBzTPP]+ cations and one [CuBr4]2– anion, and the [CuBr4]2– exhibits a twisted tetrahedral coordination geometry with the average bond length between Cu–Br is 2.393 Å. The 3D network structure of 1 is formed by electrostatic terms and other intermolecular interactions. The hybrid material undergoes a direct optical transition and has energy gap values of 1.66 eV and 2.18 eV, indicating its potential as a semiconductor material for optical research. The hybrid material undergoes a direct optical transition and has energy gap values of 1.66 eV and 2.18 eV, showing that the hybrid material is a potential semiconductor material for optical research. Abstract

We have investigated space and astrophysical phenomena in nonrelativistic laboratory plasmas with long high-power lasers, such as collisionless shocks and magnetic reconnections, and have been exploring relativistic regimes with intense short pulse lasers, such as energetic ion acceleration using large-area suspended graphene. Increasing the intensity and repetition rate of the intense lasers, we have to handle large amounts of data from the experiments as well as the control parameters of laser beamlines. Artificial intelligence (AI) such as machine learning and neural networks may play essential roles in optimizing the laser and target conditions for efficient laser ion acceleration. Implementing AI into the laser system in mind, as the first step, we are introducing machine learning in ion etch pit analyses detected on plastic nuclear track detectors. Convolutional neural networks allow us to analyze big ion etch pit data with high precision and recall. We introduce one of the applications of laser-driven ion beams using AI to reconstruct vector electric and magnetic fields in laser-produced turbulent plasmas in three dimensions. Abstract

Background Physicians' recognition of end of life (EOL) has key influences on patients' 'good death'. Aim We aimed to study physicians' attitude toward EOL, and to analyze the relationship between physicians' assessment and patients' actual survival and the trigger effect on patient's access to palliative consultation and palliative care. Design This is a multi-center retrospective cohort study in seven community hospitals in Taiwan. Methods Inpatients admitted between 1 March 2016 and 31 December 2020, scored ≥4 points using Taiwan version-Palliative Care Screening Tool (TW-PCST), and expired before 31 December 2020 were enrolled. Physicians answered three questions regarding these inpatients: 'surprised of mortality within 6–12 months', 'EOL' and 'in need of palliative care'. We followed up patients' actual survival and access to palliative consultation and services. Results We enrolled 10 304 cases. There was high correlation among the three questions. The median survival of patients with 'not surprised of death within 6–12 months', 'EOL', and 'needing palliative care' were 68, 60 and 58 days, respectively. Those with opposite responses were 206, 166 and 186 days, respectively. Patients' main diagnosis, TW-PCST score, physicians' palliative care qualifications and reward measures were all associated with physicians' recognition of EOL. Physicians' assessment, physicians' training, disease characteristics and TW-PSCT scores were all associated with palliative consultation and palliative care. Conclusions Physicians are still over optimistic in recognizing inpatients' survival and palliative care needs. EOL talks can be initiated when the TW-PCST score is high. Abstract

In the realm of high-energy-density laboratory plasma experiments, ion radiography is a vital tool for measuring electromagnetic fields. Leveraging the deflection of injected protons, ion imaging can reveal the intricate patterns of electromagnetic fields within the plasma. However, the complex task of reconstructing electromagnetic fields within the plasma system from ion images presents a formidable challenge. In response, we propose the application of neural network techniques to facilitate electromagnetic field reconstructions. For the training data, we generate corresponding particle data on ion radiography with diverse field profiles in the plasma system, drawing from analytical solutions of charged particle motions and test-particle simulations. With these training data, our expectation is that the developed neural network can assimilate information from ion radiography and accurately predict the corresponding field profiles. In this study, our primary emphasis is on developing these techniques within the context of the simplest setups, specifically uniform (single-layer) or two-layer systems. We begin by examining systems with only electric or magnetic fields and subsequently extend our exploration to systems with combined electromagnetic fields. Our findings demonstrate the viability of employing neural networks for electromagnetic field reconstructions. In all the presented scenarios, the correlation coefficients between the actual and neural network-predicted values consistently reach 0.99. We have also learned that physics concepts can help us understand the weaknesses in neural network performance and identify directions for improvement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We report two experiments designed to investigate whether the presentation of a range of pleasant fragrances, containing both floral and fruity notes, would modulate people’s judgements of the facial attractiveness (Experiment 1) and age (Experiment 2) of a selection of typical female faces varying in age in the range 20–69 years. In Experiment 1, male participants rated the female faces as less attractive when presented with an unpleasant fragrance compared to clean air. The rated attractiveness of the female faces was lower when the participants rated the unpleasant odour as having a lower attractiveness and pleasantness, and a higher intensity. In Experiment 2, both male and female participants rated the age of female faces while presented with one of four pleasant fragrances or clean air as a control. Only the female participants demonstrated a crossmodal effect, with the pleasant fragrances inducing an older rating for female faces in the 40–49-years-old age range, whereas a younger rating was documented for female faces in the 60–69-years-old age range. Taken together, these results are consistent with the view that while the valence of fragrance (pleasant versus unpleasant) exerts a robust crossmodal influence over judgements of facial attractiveness, the effects of pleasant fragrance on judgements of a person’s age appear to be less reliable. One possible explanation for the differing effect of scent in the two cases relates to the fact that attractiveness judgements are more subjective, hedonic, and/or intuitive than age ratings which are more objective, cognitive-mediated, and/or analytic in nature.
