The use of cementitious materials to improve clay is a common technique in engineering. However, the effectiveness of these materials, particularly desulfurized gypsum, on clays with different mineral compositions remains unclear, resulting in a lack of theoretical basis for their application in engineering. This study investigated the synergistic effects of clinker–metakaolin–desulfurized gypsum on clays with various mineral compositions through a series of macroscopic and microscopic laboratory tests. The results revealed that the stress–strain relationships of all clay samples exhibited softening characteristics. The softening was most pronounced in kaolinite samples, followed by illite and bentonite samples. For single-phase clays, the unconfined compressive strength followed the order of kaolinite > illite > bentonite. For multiphase clays, the order was illite + kaolinite > bentonite + illite + kaolinite > bentonite + kaolinite > bentonite + illite. The strength enhancement in the improved soils was primarily due to kaolinite and illite. As the content of desulfurized gypsum increased, the ettringite crystals in the improved soils transformed from cluster-like to framework-like structures. When the gypsum content exceeded 10%, the macroscopic performance of the improved soils decreased. These findings provide valuable insights for related engineering applications. The prevailing design methodology for foundation pit support structures conventionally treats the pit cross section as a two-dimensional plane, facilitating the computation of soil and water pressures acting upon the retaining structure. Regrettably, this conventional approach tends to overlook the critical corner effect, particularly when the foundation pit is in proximity to a subway tunnel, where the nuanced nature of this corner effect remains indeterminate. Consequently, this research is directed toward an in-depth investigation of a deep foundation pit contiguous to a subway tunnel. A systematic evaluation and optimization of the corner effect pertaining to the deep foundation pit are undertaken through a combination of comprehensive field monitoring and simulation methodologies. The results show that a substantial mitigation in the deformation of the supporting structure, settlements of the ground surface and adjacent buildings, as well as the displacement of the subway tunnel, were achieved through a consideration of the corner effect. Notably, the ameliorative impact of adjacent buildings on the corner effect is observed. Further scrutiny reveals that the supporting structure within a distance of 12 m from the pit corner is most susceptible to the corner effect, as evidenced by a plane strain ratio (PSR) falling below 0.8. Beyond a spatial threshold of 20 m, the PSR attains a value of 1.0, indicative of a negligible corner effect and the foundation pit section existing in a plane strain state. The adjustment of pile length or diameter based on the PSR emerges as a viable strategy that can realize the construction cost optimization on the premise of ensuring the stability of the foundation pit. The impact of pile diameter variation is paramount, corresponding to a reduction in the range of PSR values below 0.8 from 12 m to 9.8 m. The corner effect is significantly diminished. Zn is a toxic heavy metal that seriously endangers human health and ecological stability. For a long time, traditional remediation techniques have been used to remediate Zn-contaminated soil prone to other problems such as secondary contamination. In recent years, due to the great danger posed by Zn pollution, there has been an increasing interest in applying eco-friendly and sustainable methods to remediate Zn-contaminated soil. Therefore, in this study, microbially induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP) technology was used to bioremediate zinc ions by transforming ionic heavy metals into insoluble solid-phase minerals. Through the unconfined compressive strength (UCS) test, direct shear (DS) test, and penetration test (PT), the results showed that the unconfined compressive strength of the treated specimens increased by 187.2~550.5%, the cohesion increased significantly compared with the internal friction angle of specimens, and the permeability coefficient can be reduced by at least one order of magnitude. During the treatment of Zn pollutants, the mobility of heavy metal zinc ions was significantly reduced, the percentage of exchangeable state Zn content was significantly reduced, and the leaching concentration of zinc ions in Zn-contaminated soil was reduced to about 20 mg/L, which was significantly lower than the limit in the standard (100 mg/L). These results were further confirmed by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses, which indicated coprecipitation of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) and ZnCO3. The microbial solidification/stabilization of Zn-contaminated soil was most effective when the curing age of 28 d, the cementation solution concentration of 1 mol/L, and the cementation solution ratio of 1:2. Therefore, the bio-immobilization of zinc ions by MICP has the potential for application as a low-cost and eco-friendly method for heavy metal remediation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
