This study is part of the international survey studies on teachers' beliefs concerning the integration of children's literature in mathematics teaching and learning, and this paper reports the findings of the thematic analysis of open-ended survey responses elicited from 287 primary school teachers and teacher trainees in Taiwan. Using the seminal social psychology theory, the Theory of Planned Behaviour (Ajzen in "Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes," "50," 179-211, 1991) to frame the findings, this study highlights 11 perceived barriers and 11 perceived enablers that are thought to influence the teachers' intention to integrate children's literature in their mathematics teaching. More specifically, we identified time constraint, lack of pedagogical knowledge and confidence, and resource constraint as being the most-cited perceived barriers, while pedagogical benefits, desire to improve teaching, and enabling social norms were identified as the top perceived enablers. Ultimately, this article offers several recommendations to address some of these key perceived barriers.

There were three methods for the preparation of iron nanoparticles incorporating ordered mesoporous carbons (OMCs): the incipient wetness impregnation technique (OMC-Fe(imp)), iron contained precursor (OMC-Fe) method, and citric acid chelated iron precursor (OMC-Fe-(citric)) method. The incorporated iron was reduced to nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) by hydrogen at 673 K. The synthesized nZVI-incorporated OMCs were then used as an adsorbent to remove trace amount of molybdate ions from aqueous solutions. The texture characterization of OMCs was determined by nitrogen adsorption analysis. The morphology was observed by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy, and the surface functional groups were determined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The bulk iron contents were determined by thermal gravimetric analysis. The adsorption capacities of molybdate ions on the nZVI-incorporated OMCs were determined by using a batch reactor. Experimental results showed that the adsorption capacity of the OMC-Fe- (citric) is superior to that of OMC-Fe(imp) and OMC-Fe. At pH = 3 and initial concentration of 200 mg/L, the equilibrium adsorption capacities were 119 and 278 mg/g on OMC and OMC-Fe- (citric) containing 5 wt.% iron, respectively. The isotherm data and adsorption kinetics data were adequately fitted by the Langmuir equation and the pseudo-second-order adsorption kinetic model, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study prepared chitosan (CS), carboxymethyl chitosan (CMC), and carboxymethyl chitosan/poly(acrylic acid) (CMC/PAA) microbeads through suspension polymerization in order to investigate the indium adsorption properties onto these microbeads from aqueous solutions. The study further observed the morphology of the prepared microbeads by an optical microscope, characterizing the structure by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and measuring the point of surface zero charge by the pH drift method. The adsorption capacity was determined by batch adsorption techniques for indium and zinc ions from both single-solute and bisolutes solutions. The equilibrium data of a single solute (indium or zinc) adsorbed on the microbeads was best described by the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model. It is found that the maximum adsorption capacity of indium ion on the microbeads are in the order CMC/PAA > CMC > CS. The adsorption kinetics of indium on the microbeads best fits the pseudo-second-order model. According to thermodynamic analysis, the indium adsorption onto the microbeads was spontaneous, while the zinc adsorption was nonspontaneous. From the bisolutes’ adsorption experiments, the microbeads exhibit good selectivity for indium metal ion. Through reusability studies, the microbeads still have good adsorption capacity for indium ions after five cycles of adsorption–desorption run. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
