1. FBMC/OQAM Transceiver for Future Wireless Communication Systems: Inherent Potentials, Recent Advances, Research Challenges

Abstract

The applications and services envisioned for the sixth Generation (6G) Internet of Things (IoT) communication systems will place different requirements on the system design. The current 5G waveform, Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM), suffers from a list of drawbacks that questions its suitability and ability to fulfill these prerequisites. Filtered multi-carrier waveforms provide viable alternatives for future mobile networks. Based on the best recent advances including contributions by the authors, this work provides a comprehensive assessment of the current status and future challenges related to the design of a next-generation Filter Bank Multi-Carrier/Offset Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (FBMC/OQAM) transceiver. We start by showing how the next-generation FBMC/OQAM waveform can overcome the drawbacks of OFDM. Furthermore, we highlight the advantages and possibilities of extending the next-generation FBMC/OQAM waveform for massive Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output (mMIMO) in well-identified 6G-IoT scenarios. Results show that the next-generation FBMC/OQAM receivers associated with short prototype filters can unleash appealing properties for 6G-IoT applications. Considered a cornerstone for grant-free spectrum and massive access, asynchronous communications are shown to be achievable. Furthermore, a largely improved robustness is observed compared to OFDM under different channel impairments such as carrier frequency offsets, timing offsets, and multipath channels. Compared to the original FBMC/OQAM associated with long filters, this next-generation transceiver achieves a reduction in complexity down to a comparable level to OFDM. Finally, open research opportunities and challenges for the next-generation FBMC/OQAM waveform are discussed.

Abstract

Polar codes are one of the most recent additions to the family of forward error correction (FEC) codes, having recently been adopted in the 5G New Radio (NR) standard for the control channel. However, the stringent requirements introduced by the 5G standard in terms of block length and code rate flexibility, along with low end-to-end latency and high error correction performance represent a major challenge for their hardware implementation. In this context, we study the impact of main code and decoder design parameters on the latency, throughput, and the hardware complexity of semi-parallel decoding architectures. The impact of these parameters on the hardware efficiency of semi-parallel architectures is significant. Therefore, we propose two multi-frame decoding approaches that increase the throughput and improve the utilisation rate of the processing units of these architectures. Detailed analytical and logic synthesis results are provided and compared for a large range of values in order to constitute a reference for the implementation of flexible, yet efficient FEC decoders for polar codes.

Abstract

The use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) as flying base stations is rapidly growing in the field of wireless communications to leverage the capacity of congested cells. This study considers a two-cell system where one of the cells is saturated, i.e. can no longer serve its users, and is supported by a UAV. The UAV positioning problem is investigated specifically to benefit from the interference cancellation properties available through the introduction of power-domain non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) techniques in coordinated multipoint (CoMP) systems. Indeed, adequate placement of the UAV can enable triple mutual successive interference cancellation (TMSIC) between a triplet of users, including a cell-edge and a cell-center user in each cell, to maximize system throughput or a mixture of throughput and TMSIC probability. The random line-of-sight/non-line-of-sight realizations of air-to-ground links between users and UAV are taken into account in the problem modeling, showing a significant improvement in performance compared to the conventional mean path loss model. The performance evaluation highlights the existing trade-offs between system capacity, fairness, and computational complexity of the investigated approaches.

Abstract

Filter-bank multi-carrier with offset quadrature amplitude modulation (FBMC/OQAM) is considered by recent research projects as one of the key enablers for the future 5G air interface. It exhibits better spectral shape and improves mobility support compared to orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) thanks to the use of a time and frequency localized prototype filter. The choice of this filter is crucial for FBMC/OQAM, due to its substantial impact on achieved performance and complexity levels. In the context of 5G, short frame sizes are foreseen in several communication scenarios to reduce system latency, and therefore short filters are preferred. In this context, a novel short filter allowing for near perfect reconstruction and having the same size as one OFDM symbol is proposed. Using frequency-spread (FS) implementation for the FBMC/OQAM receiver, analytical analysis and simulation results show that the proposed filter exhibits better robustness to several types of channel impairments when compared to state-of-the-art prototype filters and OFDM modulation. In addition, FS-based hardware architecture of the filtering stage is proposed, showing lower complexity than the classical polyphase network-based implementation.

Abstract

International audience; A method to compute the truncated union bound of non-binary turbo codes mapped to high order modulations isproposed in this letter. It calls for the estimate of the truncated Euclidean distance spectrum. To this end, we identify the error events that limit the Euclidean distance of non-binary turbo codes based on memory-1 convolutional codes defined over GF(q), q > 2. Application examples are elaborated for codes over GF(64). The resulting bounds are found to accurately predict the asymptotic performance of the coded modulation scheme.

Abstract

International audience; In this paper, we study the traffic-aware resource allocation problem for a system with mixed traffic types. The considered framework encompasses real-time (RT) users having strict QoS requirements (in terms of amount of data and latency), and best-effort (BE) users for which the system tries to strike a balance between throughput and fairness. The resource allocation problem is studied in different contexts: orthogonal and non-orthogonal multiple access (OMA and NOMA respectively) in either centralized or distributed antenna systems (CAS and DAS respectively). Following the formulation of the resource optimization problem, we propose a low complexity suboptimal solution based on matching theory for each system context. We also propose an iterative approach to determine the number of subbands per antenna for the DAS contexts. The proposed techniques aim at guaranteeing the requirements of RT users while maximizing the utility function of BE users. Simulation results show that the proposed allocation method based on matching theory greatly outperforms a previously proposed greedy approach, especially in terms of RT users satisfaction.

Abstract

International audience; n this paper, a novel demapper for 2-D non-uniform constellations (2D-NUCs) is proposed, exploiting the characteristics of these constellations. It represents the combination of two underlying demapping techniques targeting the ATSC 3.0 compliant OFDM transceiver. On the one hand, for low code rates, we define a metric to perform condensed demapping. On the other hand, for high code rates, adaptive sub-region demapping is proposed. In this paper, a combination of both demapping methods is designed showing comparable performance to the classical ML demapper. The gap does not exceed 0.1 dB for all code rates of the ATSC 3.0 standard. Higher complexity reduction, from 79.2% to 95.4%, than state of art 2D-NUC demappers is obtained for 2D-256NUCs. These results are validated for ideal and non-ideal channel state information over additive white noise Gaussian and Rayleigh independently and identically distributed channels. Results are extended to 2D-1kNUCs and 2D-4kNUCs showing demapping complexity reduction from 96% to 99.7% with a negligible impact on performance.

Abstract

This paper introduces new approaches for combining non-orthogonal multiple access with distributed antenna systems. The study targets a minimization of the total transmit power in each cell, under user rate and power multiplexing constraints. Several new suboptimal power allocation techniques are proposed. They are shown to yield very close performance to an optimal power allocation scheme. Also, a new approach based on mutual successive interference cancellation of paired users is proposed. Different techniques are designed for the joint allocation of subcarriers, antennas, and power, with a particular care given to maintain a moderate complexity. The coupling of non-orthogonal multiple access to distributed antenna systems is shown to greatly outperform any other combination of orthogonal/non-orthogonal multiple access schemes with distributed or centralized deployment scenarios., Comment: Paper accepted for publication in IEEE Trans. Abstract

Several technical contributions are emerging nowadays to fulfill the new requirements foreseen in the 5th generation (5G) of mobile communication systems. Among these contributions, different variants of waveform design are proposed for the new radio air interface as alternative to orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) adopted in 4G. However, in order to prove the feasibility and the benefits of the proposed waveforms, practical hardware implementations are necessary. This paper presents one of the first flexible and efficient hardware platforms for waveform design and proof-of-concept. The proposed platform constitutes a complete hardware/software development environment, with digital processing, radio frequency boards, and all associated interfaces for control, communication, and display. Furthermore, the proposed platform allows the support of several communication scenarios as foreseen in 5G. Promising waveform candidates are implemented, in addition to OFDM, with careful architectural choices to allow fair comparisons. Particularly, this paper presents novel hardware architectures for the UF-OFDM transmitter and receiver.

Abstract

International audience; The upcomping 5th generation (5G) of mobile communication system aims to support multiple new services and use cases towards a flexible and unified connectivity. In order to meet the corresponding requirements, Universal-Filtered Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiplexing (UF-OFDM) was proposed to replace the existing waveform since it combines the advantages related to OFDM with better spectral properties and with improved robustness against time-frequency misalignments. However, its main drawback resides in the computational complexity of the transmitter reaching up to 200 times that of OFDM if no simplification is applied. While still of high complexity, most efficient simplification techniques significantly compromise the achieved spectral confinement through signal approximations. In this context, a novel low-complexity UF-OFDM transmitter without any signal quality loss is proposed. For small subband sizes, the complexity becomes comparable to OFDM regardless of the number of allocated subbands. Furthermore, the proposed transmitter architecture is flexible and can be easily adapted to support OFDM modulation.

Abstract

International audience; A method to design channel interleavers based on span properties and mutual information is presented. Resulting interleavers enjoy better burst error control and can mitigate the effect of regular error patterns. An application example based on the 2nd generation Digital Video Broadcasting Terrestrial (DVB-T2) standard is elaborated. Four channel interleaving structures are generated, resulting from a joint optimization of the interleaver span properties in the time and frequency domains, while guaranteeing good interaction with the bit interleaver. Proposed solutions are compared to the standardized DVB-T2 channel interleaver in terms of performance, latency and complexity. A significant improvement can be observed in severe channel conditions, especially over time and frequency-selective channels with erasures. Moreover, the complexity and latency of the proposed channel interleavers are reduced compared to the original DVB-T2.

Abstract

A method to design efficient puncture-constrainedinterleavers for turbo codes (TCs) is introduced. Resulting TCsprofit from a joint optimization of puncturing pattern andinterleaver to achieve an improved error rate performance. First,the puncturing pattern is selected based on the constituentcode Hamming distance spectrum and on the TC extrinsicinformation exchange under uniform interleaving. Then, theinterleaver function is defined via a layered design processtaking account of several design criteria such as minimum span,correlation girth, and puncturing constraints. We show thatapplying interleaving with a periodic cross connection patternthat can be assimilated to a protograph improves error-correctionperformance when compared to the state-of-the-art TCs. Anapplication example is elaborated and compared with the longterm evolution (LTE) standard: a significant gain in performancecan be observed. An additional benefit of the proposed techniqueresides in the important reduction of the search space for thedifferent interleaver parameters.
