In ichthyological publications from both Russia as a whole, and from the study region, lack of data indicating the actual results of observations in a specific place all result in publication of a generalised analysis. Although our publications contain such data, they are, however, not convenient for users performing global analysis. The main purpose of publishing a database is to make our data available in the global biodiversity system to a wide range of users. Dataset represents a significant addition to the distribution of species in this area. The data can be used to analyse future changes in ichthyofauna, as well as to help the authorities to manage their territory more efficiently.This publication describes a dataset that contains information on fish encounters in the Upper Don basin and the middle Volga (centre of the European part of Russia) over a 30-year period (1990-2020). The dataset contains information on 6400 occurrences of 394341 specimens of 56 species, 99.9% of specimens being identified to the species level. A total of 883 sites were studied, of which 253 were in lentic biotopes (lakes - 121, ponds - 123, backwater - 5, reservoir - 3, pit - 1), 630 were in lotic (rivers - 628, stream - 1, channel - 1). One collecting site has an average of 7.2 species (from 1-21 species per location). Only those species that form self-reproducing populations are given. The dataset is a compilation of data from several working author groups. All observations have precise geo-referencing with the names of water bodies (rivers, lakes etc.). All presented data are published in the form of a database for the first time. Some data form the basis of previously-published works (3998 observations, 62%) and some are published for the first time (2402 observations, 38%). A large amount of data comes from small water bodies that have been neglected by previous researchers.

The Lower Devonian (Lochkovian) Man On The Hill (MOTH) Lagerstätte preserves a large diversity of early vertebrates fossils, including several species of osteostracan. Waengsjoeaspis nahanniensis had previously been named on the basis of material from MOTH and is redescribed herein. The genus Waengsjoeaspis Janvier was originally established in 1985 for two species from Spitsbergen. In addition, the new species Waengsjoeaspis platycornis is recognized. Both species from MOTH lack barbs on their cornual processes. The new species differs from W. nahanniensis in proportions of the cornual processes and of the median field. New specimens from MOTH clarify the condition of the infraorbital sensory line, the mouth, and other morphological features within the genus, and confirm that the dermoskeleton grew like that of Superciliaspis by separate ossification of tesserae, fusion of tesserae to form larger units, and centrifugal growth of these units. The new observations are consistent with the earlier phylogenetic placement of Waengsjoeaspis within a clade basal to the Benneviaspidida and add to the considerable diversity of osteostracans at this important locality. Fifteen new localities of the Ukrainian brook lamprey, Lampetra (Eudontomyzon) mariae, were found within 2008-2010. The majority of them are located in the Nida River drainage. Additionally, the occurrence of that species in the Strwiaz River, a tributary of the Dniester, was confirmed. The cluster analysis performed suggests, that L. mariae exhibits strong affinity to the stone loach, Barbatula barbatula, and the Eurasian minnow, Phoxinus phoxinus. We believe that the distribution of L. mariae on the territory of Poland seems to be strongly underestimated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the marine Přidolian to early Lochkovian environments of Podolia, vertebrates were rep- resented almost exclusively by thelodonts and acanthodians. Starting from the mid Lochko- vian (Chortkiv Formation), the heterostracans increased their abundance and diversity. Diverse macroscopic remains of the cyathaspidid heterostracans, the first small-size ptera- spidids and osteostracans appeared in the late Lochkovian (Ivanie Formation). The Old Red-type ecosystem of Podolia gradually emerged with retreat of the sea. Simultaneously, various agnathans, with ecological preferences to brackish or fresh waters, appeared. At the transition to the Pragian (red-bed Dniester Formation), when coarse terrigenous quartz sand gradually replaced fine carbonate silt and clay, the armoured vertebrate community reached its peak diversity, especially regarding the osteostracans and pteraspidid heterostracans. Many local lineages developed but some ties of the heterostracan faunas with those of west- ern European and the osteostracan faunas with Spitsbergen ones are traceable. Most evolu- tionary series recognised show increase in body size, both regarding the heterostracans and osteostracans. Taxonomic diversity decreased with coarsening of the sandy sediment and in- crease of sedimentation rate, culminating in complete disappearance of fish fossils before the Emsian. The sensory line system of the pteraspidids, with supraorbital commissures devel- oped on the rostral plate and arrangement of dorsomedial canals on the dorsal shield, is pro- posed to have high diagnostic value. Some 33 species, belonging to 20 genera of the hetero- stracans and 16 species of 9 genera of the osteostracans, are described. Althaspis tarloi sp. n., Djurinaspis secunda sp. n., Palanasaspis chekhivensis gen. et sp. n., Podolaspis danieli sp. n., Semipodolaspis slobodensis gen. et sp. n., and Zenaspis kasymyri sp. n. are proposed. On 14 July 2007 two metamorphosed males of the Po brook lamprey, Lethenteron zanandreai (Vladykov, 1955), were caught in the Hutovo Blato wetland, Neretva River basin (Adriatic Sea watershed) in Bosnia and Herzegovina. This is the first report on the occurrence of this species in the waters of Bosnia and Herzegovina. New evidence of their original distributional range extended eastward is presented. The susceptibility and resistance of brook lamprey, Lampetra planeri, roach Rutilus rutilus and perch, Perca fluviatilis to Gyrodactylus salaris were examined. The level of resistance to the parasite was assessed from counts, made on anaesthetized hosts, of the numbers of G. salaris after an initial experimental exposure to salmon infected with G. salaris. The results of four experiments carried out at constant temperature (11.5°C). and decreasing temperatures (11.5°C - 0.7°C), demonstrated that G. salaris attached to the potential hosts but showed no sign of reproduction. The parasites were eliminated within 2 - 4 days. The three host species tested were clearly highly resistant to G. salaris. The restricted attachment frequency and resistance observed, indicate that these fish species play an insignificant role in the dissemination of the parasite.
