For young people with mild intellectual disabilities and complex problems, it is difficult during and after a stay in residential treatment to stand their ground in a complex world. It is therefore important to know what coping strategies these young people tend to adopt, and to what extent these are related to their mental well-being. This study investigated whether their coping strategies are related to psychosocial problems and whether they employ more inadequate coping strategies than typically developing peers. The results showed that in this group of 65 participants with a mean age of 16 years (range 10 – 24 years), coping strategies as measured with the Utrechtse Copinglijst, are related to specific psychosocial problems, measured with the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire. Furthermore, these adolescents used fewer problem-solving coping strategies than typically developing adolescents. The importance of stimulating adequate coping strategies and creating an environment that promotes problemsolving coping by youth are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The text is made form the tesimonies of ten (10) habitants of Nuevo Chile neighborhood with stories about the circumstances previous to their arrival in the neighborhood –which majority-it make reference to four big subjects: be victims of a system that does not guarantee decent housing for all, an economic model that oblige to migrate in search of better future in the city, be victims of the bipartisan violence, and be harassed by his militancy in the Communist Party. It is about of consider the reflection from the first settlers and founders of neighborhood in a look that is not limited to the neighborhood itself but it consider the dynamics such of the city, as the effects of political violence that the country lives since the beginngs the century XX. The investigation about the Nuevo Chile neighborhood contemplates other testimonies, but it are not included in the present version that stands out, in essence, thevictimization that they suffered before arriving in Bogotá. The Nuevo Chile neighborhood was the result of the direct action of the communities from the 14 February 1971, in what was initially called an invasion carried out by 540 families and today are in the "space recovered" and legalited as organised by the Central Nacional Provivienda (Cenaprov or Provivienda), under the influence of Colombian Communist Party.

Background: A growing interest exists in mechanisms involved in behaviour problems in children with mild intellectual disabilities and borderline intelligence (MID/BI). Social problem solving difficulties have been found to be an explanatory mechanism for aggressive behaviour in these children. However, recently a discrepancy was found between automatic and reflective responding in social situations. We hypothesise that low impulse control and aggressive social problem solving strategies "together" may explain mechanisms involved in aggressive behaviour by children with MID/BI. Method: In a clinical sample of 130 children with MID/BI receiving intramural treatment, main, moderating and mediating effects of impulse control and aggressive response generation on aggressive behaviour were examined by conducting hierarchical linear multiple regression analyses. Results: Independent main effects of both impulse control and aggressive response generation on aggressive behaviour were found. Results indicated that low impulse control and aggressive response generation each explain unique variance in aggressive behaviour. Conclusions: As this study is the first that has shown both impulse control and aggressive response generation to be important predictors for aggressive behaviour in children with MID/BI, future research should further examine the nature of relations between low impulse control and social problem solving. Background: This study aimed to examine whether the social information-processing model (SIP model) applies to aggressive behaviour by children with mild intellectual disabilities (MID). The response-decision element of SIP was expected to be unnecessary to explain aggressive behaviour in these children, and SIP was expected to mediate the relation between social schemata and aggressive behaviour. Method: SIP and aggressive behaviour of 130 10- to 14-year-old children with MID in residential care were assessed. The fit of various SIP models was tested with structural equation modelling. Results: The response-decision process was found not to be necessary to explain aggressive behaviour. Social schemata were indirectly related to aggressive behaviour with aggressive response generation as mediating variable. Conclusions: Implications for SIP theory and intervention are discussed.

The paranasal sinuses are a common site of infection in children. It may be difficultto distinguish children with viral sinusitis of the uncomplicated infections by bacterial agents. These are uncommon in children it was suspected when persistent symptoms as nasal discharge, daytime cought for more 10 days or severe symtoms (toxic appearance with temperature >39 ºc, purulent nasal discharge) for at least 3 consecutives days. Paranasal sinus puncture is more difficult in pediatric patients and its indications included severe toxic illness, inmunocompromised patients and suppurative complications. CT Scanning is the criterion standar for evaluation both mucosal inflammation and anatomical abnormalities.The bacterial and viruses etiology would be to distinguish oneself to take a decision in the treatment. Amoxicilyn to be continued the ideal antibiotic therapy for acute sinusitis.RESUMENproporción mayor está dada por eventos virales que suelen ser difícil de distinguir de los procesos bacterianos no complicados. Esta última no es una patología frecuente en la población pediátrica y su sospecha es mas por la evolución clínica de procesos respiratorios prolongados y también por la magnitud de estos síntomas (aspecto tóxico con temperatura mayor o igual de 39ºc con descarga nasal purulenta) por más de tres días.Los estudios considerados como de precisión diagnósticos como el cultivo por aspiración directa en los senos paranasales se ven limitados en la población infantil por la mayor dificultad y complicaciones que podrían tener con respecto a los adultos por el desarrollo anatómicos del paciente pediátrico. Entre sus indicaciones están estados de toxicidad severa, pacientes inmunocomprometidos o complicaciones supurativas. El TAC de senos paranasales es el criterio estándar tanto para la evaluación de la inflamación mucosa como para la determinación de anormalidades anatómicas.Es importante diferenciar por los datos del tiempo de evolución y el estado general la etiología viral de la bacteriana y realizar el manejo de acuerdo a esto. La amoxicilina sigue siendo el antibiótico de primera opción y de acuerdo a la respuesta esperada se indicará el manejo alternativo. Los antihistamínicos no se recomiendan a menos que coexistan con procesos alérgicos persistentes.

This work aimed at developing a methodology for the production of cysts of “branchoneta” Dendrocephalus brasiliensis, accomplished at the Paulo Afonso Fishculture Station, BA, attempting to viabilize the use of branchoneta as an alternative food. The perspective for the development of anti-HIV/AIDS vaccines became a target sought by several research groups and pharmaceutical companies. However, the complex virus biology in addition to a striking genetic variability and the limited understanding of the immunological correlates of protection have made this an enormous scientific challenge not overcome so far. In this review we presented an updating of HIV-1 subtypes and recombinant viruses circulating in South American countries, focusing mainly on Brazil, as one of the challenges for HIV vaccine development. Moreover, we discussed the importance of stimulating developing countries to participate in the process of vaccine evaluation, not only testing vaccines according to already defined protocols, but also working together with them, in order to take into consideration their local information on virus diversity and host genetic background relevant for the vaccine development and testing, as well as including local virus based reagents to evaluate the immunogenicity of the candidate vaccines.
