Purpose: This study aimed to non-invasively test the hypothesis that (a) short-term lower limb unloading would induce changes in the neural control of force production (based on motor units (MUs) properties) in the vastus lateralis muscle and (b) possible changes are reversed by active recovery (AR). Methods: Ten young males underwent 10 days of unilateral lower limb suspension (ULLS) followed by 21 days of AR. During ULLS, participants walked exclusively on crutches with the dominant leg suspended in a slightly flexed position (15°–20°) and with the contralateral foot raised by an elevated shoe. The AR was based on resistance exercise (leg press and leg extension) and executed at 70% of each participant's 1 repetition maximum, 3 times/week. Maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVC) of knee extensors and MUs properties of the vastus lateralis muscle were measured at baseline, after ULLS, and after AR. MUs were identified using high-density electromyography during trapezoidal isometric contractions at 10%, 25%, and 50% of the current MVC, and individual MUs were tracked across the 3 data collection points. Results: We identified 1428 unique MUs, and 270 of them (18.9%) were accurately tracked. After ULLS, MVC decreased by 29.77%, MUs absolute recruitment/derecruitment thresholds were reduced at all contraction intensities (with changes between the 2 variables strongly correlated), while discharge rate was reduced at 10% and 25% but not at 50% MVC. Impaired MVC and MUs properties fully recovered to baseline levels after AR. Similar changes were observed in the pool of total as well as tracked MUs. Conclusion: Our novel results demonstrate, non-invasively, that 10 days of ULLS affected neural control predominantly by altering the discharge rate of lower-threshold but not of higher-threshold MUs, suggesting a preferential impact of disuse on motoneurons with a lower depolarization threshold. However, after 21 days of AR, the impaired MUs properties were fully restored to baseline levels, highlighting the plasticity of the components involved in neural control.

Questo è quanto viene sancito nel comma 7 dell’art. 33 della Legge Costituzionale del 26 settembre del 2023, che porta a compimento un processo di ri-semantizzazione del concetto di sport avvenuto nel corso degli ultimi trenta anni che recupera i valori per i quali lo sport e le forme sportive erano nate. Accanto al concetto di sport agonistico, in questo contributo si affiancano e si integrano i concetti di attività sportiva a supporto del benessere psico-fisico e della crescita dell’uomo di tutte le età senza distinzioni di genere, razza o diversità economica.

Objective: To examine the dose-response association between estimated cardiorespiratory fitness (eCRF) and risk of myocardial infarction (MI). Patients and Methods: Adults who attended Tromsø Study surveys 4-6 (Janurary 1,1994-December 20, 2008) with no previous cardiovascular disease were followed up through December 31, 2014 for incident MI. Associations were examined using restricted cubic splines Fine and Gray regressions, adjusted for education, smoking, alcohol, diet, sex, adiposity, physical activity, study survey, and age (timescale) in the total cohort and subsamples with hyperlipidemia (n=2956), hypertension (n=8290), obesity (n=5784), metabolic syndrome (n=1410), smokers (n=3823), and poor diet (n=3463) and in those who were physically inactive (n=6255). Results: Of 14,285 participants (mean age ± SD, 53.7±11.4 years), 979 (6.9%) experienced MI during follow-up (median, 7.2 years; 25th-75th, 5.3-14.6 years). Females with median eCRF (32 mL/kg/min) had 43% lower MI risk (subdistributed hazard ratio [SHR], 0.57; 95% CI, 0.48-0.68) than those at the 10th percentile (25 mL/kg/min) as reference. The lowest MI risk was observed at 47 mL/kg/min (SHR, 0.02; 95% CI, 0.01-0.11). Males had 26% lower MI risk at median eCRF (40 mL/kg/min; SHR, 0.74; 95% CI, 0.63-0.86) than those at the 10th percentile (32 mL/kg/min), and the lowest risk was 69% (SHR, 0.31; 95% CI, 0.14-0.71) at 60 mL/kg/min. The associations were similar in subsamples with cardiovascular disease risk factors. Conclusion: Higher eCRF associated with lower MI risk in females and males, but associations were more pronounced among females than those in males. This suggest eCRF as a vital estimate to implement in medical care to identify individuals at high risk of future MI, especially for females.

Abstract Background Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) is a rapid and user-friendly technique for assessing body composition in sports. Currently, no sport-specific predictive equations are available, and the utilization of generalized formulas can introduce systematic bias. The objectives of this study were as follows: (i) to develop and validate new predictive models for estimating fat-free mass (FFM) components in male elite soccer players; (ii) to evaluate the accuracy of existing predictive equations. Methods A total of 102 male elite soccer players (mean age 24.7 ± 5.7 years), participating in the Italian first league, underwent assessments during the first half of the in-season period and were randomly divided into development and validation groups. Bioelectrical resistance (R) and reactance (Xc), representing the bioimpedance components, were measured using a foot-to-hand BIA device at a single frequency of 50 kHz. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry was employed to acquire reference data for FFM, lean soft tissue (LST), and appendicular lean soft tissue (ALST). The validation of the newly developed predictive equations was conducted through regression analysis, Bland–Altman tests, and the area under the curves (AUC) of regression receiver operating characteristic (RROC) curves. Results Developed models were: FFM = − 7.729 + (body mass × 0.686) + (stature2/R × 0.227) + (Xc × 0.086) + (age × 0.058), R2 = 0.97, Standard error of estimation (SEE) = 1.0 kg; LST = − 8.929 + (body mass × 0.635) + (stature2/R × 0.244) + (Xc × 0.093) + (age × 0.048), R2 = 0.96, SEE = 0.9 kg; ALST = − 24.068 + (body mass × 0.347) + (stature2/R × 0.308) + (Xc × 0.152), R2 = 0.88, SEE = 1.4 kg. Train-test validation, performed on the validation group, revealed that generalized formulas for athletes underestimated all the predicted FFM components (p 0.05), with R2 values ranging from 0.83 to 0.91, and no trend (p > 0.05). The AUC scores of the RROC curves indicated an accuracy of 0.92, 0.92, and 0.74 for FFM, LST, and ALST, respectively. Conclusions The utilization of generalized predictive equations leads to an underestimation of FFM and ALST in elite soccer players. The newly developed soccer-specific formulas enable valid estimations of body composition while preserving the portability of a field-based method.

This work presents a cloud-based Virtual Flow Metering (VFM) system powered by a hybrid physics-data approach to estimate the water production per well in a gas field. This hybrid approach, which allows accurate calculations near real-time conditions, is based on the description of the flow through the wellbore using physics-based models pertaining to gas-liquid flows with high gas volume fraction. A data-driven approach is implemented to tune the flow model using well test data. This implementation accounts for changes in the well performance and increase in water production, resulting in a self-calibrating solution. This means that the model will remain accurate and relevant as production and well conditions change. Results from the VFM show good agreement with the well test data for steady-state conditions. The VFM calculations are performed remotely using a cloud-based DataOps platform where results are also stored. This allows continuous access to live sensor data to be used as input to other applications or visualized through a web interface. The VFM system uses a set of readily available sensors installed in the wells. Thus, it represents cost reduction in both capital and operating expenditures when compared to the installation of multiphase flow meters or separators.

Abstract Radiomics is emerging as a promising and useful tool in cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging applications. Accordingly, the purpose of this study was to investigate, for the first time, the effect of image resampling/discretization and filtering on radiomic features estimation from quantitative CMR T1 and T2 mapping. Specifically, T1 and T2 maps of 26 patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) were used to estimate 98 radiomic features for 7 different resampling voxel sizes (at fixed bin width), 9 different bin widths (at fixed resampling voxel size), and 7 different spatial filters (at fixed resampling voxel size/bin width). While we found a remarkable dependence of myocardial radiomic features from T1 and T2 mapping on image filters, many radiomic features showed a limited sensitivity to resampling voxel size/bin width, in terms of intraclass correlation coefficient (> 0.75) and coefficient of variation (

After more than 40 years, the inclusion of a Motor and Sport Science graduate in primary school has become a reality. Articles 1(329–340) of the Italian Law 234/2021 is the result of an innovative and cultural choice promoted by the Italian policy makers. Specifically, it involves the implementation and inclusion of the specialist teacher (i.e., disciplinary) along with the non-specialized teacher (i.e., generalist) in the context of the teaching of primary physical education. This new professional figure will contribute to enrich primary education by enhancing children’s motor, interpersonal and intrapersonal intelligence. A high-quality education and training to these novel reference figures should be granted. Accordingly, universities should ensure in bachelor’s and master’s degree programs related to Motor and Sport Sciences, an appropriate number of credits to be reserved for the training of those specific skills demanded for a high-quality physical education teaching.

This cross-sectional study aims to elucidate the neural mechanisms underlying the control of knee extension forces in individuals with anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR). Eleven soccer players with ACLR and nine control players performed unilateral isometric knee extensions at 10% and 30% of their maximum voluntary force (MVF). Simultaneous recordings of high-density surface electromyography (HDEMG) and force output were conducted for each lower limb, and HDEMG data from the vastus lateralis (VL) and vastus medialis (VM) muscles were decomposed into individual motor unit spike trains. Force steadiness was estimated using the coefficient of variation of force. An intramuscular coherence analysis was adopted to estimate the common synaptic input (CSI) converging to each muscle. A factor analysis was applied to investigate the neural strategies underlying the control of synergistic motor neuron clusters, referred to as motor unit modes. Force steadiness was similar between lower limbs. However, motor neurons innervating the VL on the reconstructed side received a lower proportion of CSI at low-frequency bandwidths (<5 Hz) compared with the unaffected lower limbs (P < 0.01). Furthermore, the reconstructed side demonstrated a higher proportion of motor units associated with the neural input common to the synergistic muscle, as compared with the unaffected lower limbs (P < 0.01). These findings indicate that the VL muscle of reconstructed lower limbs contribute marginally to force steadiness and that a plastic rearrangement in synergistic clusters of motor units involved in the control of knee extension forces is evident following ACLR. NEW & NOTEWORTHY: Chronic quadriceps dysfunction is common after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR). We investigated voluntary force control strategies by estimating common inputs to motor neurons innervating the vastii muscles. Our results showed attenuated common inputs to the vastus lateralis and plastic rearrangements in functional clusters of motor neurons modulating knee extension forces in the reconstructed limb. In this work, topological data analysis is used to identify the onset of severe slug flow in offshore petroleum production systems. Severe slugging is a multiphase flow regime known to be very inefficient and potentially harmful to process equipment and it is characterized by large oscillations in the production fluid pressure. Time series from pressure sensors in subsea oil wells are processed by means of Takens embedding to produce point clouds of data. Embedded sensor data is then analyzed using persistent homology to obtain topological indicators capable of revealing the occurrence of severe slugging in a condition-based monitoring approach. A large dataset of well events consisting of both real and simulated data is used to demonstrate the possibilty of authomatizing severe slugging detection from live data via topological data analysis. Methods based on persistence diagrams are shown to accurately identify severe slugging and to classify different flow regimes from pressure signals of producing wells with supervised machine learning.

Considering the high vulnerability of existing masonry buildings, which often have strategic or cultural value, professionals and specialized engineers are frequently required to model complex historical buildings. The approaches proposed by National Building Codes may not always be suitable for such cases, but more detailed approaches are necessary, relying on FEM continuum modeling and inelastic constitutive law. There are many constitutive laws proposed in the literature that allow us to accurately reproduce the mechanical behavior of masonry. However, they require the identification of several parameters that are not easy to determine. In this study, a sensitivity analysis of the parameters of a nonlinear constitutive law very popular for masonry modeling (the “Concrete Damage Plasticity—CDP” model) is conducted, considering literature tests of masonry panels under shear stress as the benchmark. The aim is to assess the influence of the main parameters of the model and compare them to one of the more commonly used Mohr–Coulomb failure criteria.

This study aims to resume the founding characteristics of Georges Hébert's Natural Method of Physical and Moral Education, observing the author at a historical and cultural level and the relationships with the various authors of the time, studying the works that characterized him and mainly analyzing his Experimental method. He devised a method that was first applied in a military environment at the "École du Bataillon de Lorient" and later in a sports environment at the "Collège d'athlètes de Reims". The Method was accredited thanks to the intense activity of literary production, in particular he devoted himself to his most important work: L'Éducation physique, virile et morale par la méthode naturelle. Today we reread Georges Hébert, since he was one of the first scholars to classify human movement, defining the 10 families of "natural exercises". The reinterpretation that emerges from it finds elements that put the body and movement in the natural environment back at the center.

Abstract This study aimed at: (1) Reporting COVID‐19 symptoms and duration in professional football players; (2) comparing players’ pulmonary function before and after COVID‐19; (3) comparing players’ metabolic power (Pmet) before and after COVID‐19. Thirteen male players (Age: 23.9 ± 4.0 years, V̇O2peak: 49.7 ± 4.0 mL/kg/min) underwent a medical screening and performed a running incremental step test and a spirometry test after COVID‐19. Spirometric data were compared with the ones collected at the beginning of the same season. Players’ mean Pmet of the 10 matches played before COVID‐19 was compared with mean Pmet of the 10 matches played after COVID‐19. Players completed a questionnaire on COVID‐19 symptoms and duration 6 months following the disease. COVID‐19 positivity lasted on average 15 ± 5 days. “General fatigue” and “muscle fatigue” symptoms were reported by all players during COVID‐19 and persisted for 77% (general fatigue) and 54% (muscle fatigue) of the players for 37 ± 28 and 38 ± 29 days after the disease, respectively. No significant changes in spirometric measurements were found after COVID‐19, even though some impairments at the individual level were observed. Summary: Woody plants display some photosynthetic activity in stems, but the biological role of stem photosynthesis and the specific contributions of bark and wood to carbon uptake and oxygen evolution remain poorly understood.We aimed to elucidate the functional characteristics of chloroplasts in stems of different ages in Fraxinus ornus. Our investigation employed diverse experimental approaches, including microsensor technology to assess oxygen production rates in whole stem, bark, and wood separately. Additionally, we utilized fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM) to characterize the relative abundance of photosystems I and II (PSI : PSII chlorophyll ratio) in bark and wood.Our findings revealed light‐induced increases in O2 production in whole stem, bark, and wood. We present the radial profile of O2 production in F. ornus stems, demonstrating the capability of stem chloroplasts to perform light‐dependent electron transport. Younger stems exhibited higher light‐induced O2 production and dark respiration rates than older ones.While bark emerged as the primary contributor to net O2 production under light conditions, our data underscored that wood chloroplasts are also photosynthetically active. The FLIM analysis unveiled a lower PSI abundance in wood than in bark, suggesting stem chloroplasts are not only active but also acclimate to the spectral composition of light reaching inner compartments. With the recent climate warming, tundra ecotones are facing a progressive acceleration of spring snowpack melting and extension of the growing season, with evident consequences to vegetation. Along with summer temperature, winter precipitation has been recently recognised as a crucial factor for tundra shrub growth and physiology. However, gaps of knowledge still exist on long-living plant responses to different snowpack duration, especially on how intra-specific and year-to-year variability together with multiple functional trait adjustments could influence the long-term responses. To fill this gap, we conducted a 3 years snow manipulation experiment above the Alpine treeline on the typical tundra species Juniperus communis, the conifer with the widest distributional range in the north emisphere. We tested shoot elongation, leaf area, stomatal density, leaf dry weight and leaf non-structural carbohydrate content of plants subjected to anticipated, natural and postponed snowpack duration. Anticipated snowpack melting enhanced new shoot elongation and increased stomatal density. However, plants under prolonged snow cover seemed to compensate for the shorter growing period, likely increasing carbon allocation to growth. In fact, these latter showed larger needles and low starch content at the beginning of the growing season. Variability between treatments slightly decreased over time, suggesting a progressive acclimation of juniper to new conditions. In the context of future warming scenarios, our results support the hypothesis of shrub biomass increase within the tundra biome. Yet, the picture is still far from being complete and further research should focus on transient and fading effects of changing conditions in the long term.

Effective anticancer treatments have dramatically improved the outcome of patients with cancer, but cardiac toxicity reduces their clinical efficacy in a non-negligible percentage of patients. Sacubitril/valsartan is a new paradigm in the treatment of chronic heart failure, with a reduced ejection fraction due to the enhancement of natriuretic peptides' properties when coupled with a blocking effect on the angiotensin II type 1 (AT1) receptors. As with other clinical conditions of heart failure with potentially reversible declines in cardiac function, a wearable cardioverter defibrillator (WCD) is a valid tool for protection against sudden death until recovery occurs. We report a case series of four patients with chemotherapy-related acute cardiac failure with severely reduced cardiac function. They were successfully treated with sacubitril/valsartan while being protected from malignant arrhythmias using a wearable cardioverter defibrillator until the recovery of cardiac function. Sacubitril/valsartan was confirmed to be effective in anthracycline-related cardiac toxicity and the wearable cardioverter defibrillator should be considered as a support tool even in the oncology patient.

Abstract Background High load (HL: > 85% of one repetition maximum (1RM)) squats with maximal intended velocity contractions (MIVC) combined with football sessions can be considered a relevant and time-efficient practice for maintaining and improving high velocity movements in football. Flywheel (FW) resistance exercise (RE) have recently emerged with promising results on physical parameters associated with football performance. Methods In this randomized controlled trial over 6 weeks, 38 recreationally active male football players randomly performed RE with MIVCs two times per week as either 1) FW squats (n = 13) or 2) barbell free weight (BFW) HL squats (n = 13), where a third group served as controls (n = 12). All three groups conducted 2–3 football sessions and one friendly match a week during the intervention period. Pre- to post changes in 10-m sprint, countermovement jump (CMJ) and 1RM partial squat were assessed with univariate analyses of variance. Abstract Purpose Response assessment to definitive non-surgical treatment for head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is centered on the role of 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET-CT) 12 weeks after treatment. The 5-point Hopkins score is the only qualitative system available for standardized reporting, albeit limited by suboptimal positive predictive value (PPV). The aim of our study was to explore the feasibility and assess the diagnostic accuracy of an experimental 6-point scale (“Cuneo score”). Methods We performed a retrospective, multicenter study on HNSCC patients who received a curatively-intended, radiation-based treatment. A centralized, independent qualitative evaluation of post-treatment FDG-PET/CT scans was undertaken by 3 experienced nuclear medicine physicians who were blinded to patients’ information, clinical data, and all other imaging examinations. Response to treatment was evaluated according to Hopkins, Cuneo, and Deauville criteria. The primary endpoint of the study was to evaluate the PPV of Cuneo score in assessing locoregional control (LRC). We also correlated semi-quantitative metabolic factors as included in PERCIST and EORTC criteria with disease outcome. Results Out of a total sample of 350 patients from 11 centers, 119 subjects (oropharynx, 57.1%; HPV negative, 73.1%) had baseline and post-treatment FDG-PET/CT scans fully compliant with EANM 1.0 guidelines and were therefore included in our analysis. At a median follow-up of 42 months (range 5-98), the median locoregional control was 35 months (95% CI, 32-43), with a 74.5% 3-year rate. Cuneo score had the highest diagnostic accuracy (76.5%), with a positive predictive value for primary tumor (Tref), nodal disease (Nref), and composite TNref of 42.9%, 100%, and 50%, respectively. A Cuneo score of 5-6 (indicative of residual disease) was associated with poor overall survival at multivariate analysis (HR 6.0; 95% CI, 1.88-19.18; p = 0.002). In addition, nodal progressive disease according to PERCIST criteria was associated with worse LRC (OR for LR failure, 5.65; 95% CI, 1.26-25.46; p = 0.024) and overall survival (OR for death, 4.81; 1.07-21.53; p = 0.04). Conclusions In the frame of a strictly blinded methodology for response assessment, the feasibility of Cuneo score was preliminarily validated. Prospective investigations are warranted to further evaluate its reproducibility and diagnostic accuracy.

Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) and anthropometry are considered alternatives to well-established reference techniques for assessing body composition. In team sports, the percentage of fat mass (FM%) is one of the most informative parameters, and a wide range of predictive equations allow for its estimation through both BIA and anthropometry. Although it is not clear which of these two techniques is more accurate for estimating FM%, the choice of the predictive equation could be a determining factor. The present study aimed to examine the validity of BIA and anthropometry in estimating FM% with different predictive equations, using dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) as a reference, in a group of futsal players. A total of 67 high-level male futsal players (age 23.7 ± 5.4 years) underwent BIA, anthropometric measurements, and DXA scanning. Four generalized, four athletic, and two sport-specific predictive equations were used for estimating FM% from raw bioelectric and anthropometric parameters. DXA-derived FM% was used as a reference. BIA-based generalized equations overestimated FM% (ranging from 1.13 to 2.69%, p < 0.05), whereas anthropometry-based generalized equations underestimated FM% in the futsal players (ranging from −1.72 to −2.04%, p < 0.05). Compared to DXA, no mean bias (p > 0.05) was observed using the athletic and sport-specific equations. Sport-specific equations allowed for more accurate and precise FM% estimations than did athletic predictive equations, with no trend (ranging from r = −0.217 to 0.235, p > 0.05). Regardless of the instrument, the choice of the equation determines the validity in FM% prediction. In conclusion, BIA and anthropometry can be used interchangeably, allowing for valid FM% estimations, provided that athletic and sport-specific equations are applied.

Radiomics and artificial intelligence have the potential to become a valuable tool in clinical applications. Frequently, radiomic analyses through machine learning methods present issues caused by high dimensionality and multicollinearity, and redundant radiomic features are usually removed based on correlation analysis. We assessed the effect of preprocessing—in terms of voxel size resampling, discretization, and filtering—on correlation-based dimensionality reduction in radiomic features from cardiac T1 and T2 maps of patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. For different combinations of preprocessing parameters, we performed a dimensionality reduction of radiomic features based on either Pearson’s or Spearman’s correlation coefficient, followed by the computation of the stability index. With varying resampling voxel size and discretization bin width, for both T1 and T2 maps, Pearson’s and Spearman’s dimensionality reduction produced a slightly different percentage of remaining radiomic features, with a relatively high stability index. For different filters, the remaining features’ stability was instead relatively low. Overall, the percentage of eliminated radiomic features through correlation-based dimensionality reduction was more dependent on resampling voxel size and discretization bin width for textural features than for shape or first-order features. Notably, correlation-based dimensionality reduction was less sensitive to preprocessing when considering radiomic features from T2 compared with T1 maps.
