This letter presents a technique for nonintrusive code execution tracking using side-channel signals of power consumption. Using a nearest-neighbor classifier that integrates the dynamic time warping distance with information from the control flow graph, it is possible to identify executed basic blocks from a trace of power consumption that exhibits temporal distortions due to assembly-level artifacts and varying operational conditions. Experimental results show that the proposed technique achieves over 95% precision when inferring the runtime execution flow of a cruise control application using unmarked traces of power consumption collected from different processors. In rotary-percussion drilling, the impact frequency is a crucial variable that is closely linked to operational factors that determine the efficacy of the drilling process, such as the rate of penetration, bit wear, and rock mass characteristics. Typical identification methods rely on complex simulation models or the analysis of different sensor signals installed on specially adapted setups, which are difficult to be implemented in the field. This paper presents a novel study where the impact frequency is identified by motor current signature analysis (MCSA) applied to an induction motor driving a DTH drilling setup. The analysis of the case study begins with the definition of characteristic drilling stages where the pressure and sound signals allow the detection of an impact frequency of 14.10 Hz, which is then used as a reference to validate three MCSA identification approaches. As a result of the analysis, the envelope approach is the most robust for nearly real-time implementations considering its simplicity and range of coverage. Experimental results provide evidence about the feasibility of the proposed MCSA methods to be integrated into Measurement-While-Drilling (MWD) systems to improve drilling condition monitoring and rock mass characterization. This paper uses a line-following approach to study the longitudinal and lateral problems in vehicle platooning. Under this setup, we assume that inter-vehicle distance sensing is unreliable and propose a cooperative control strategy to render the platoon less vulnerable to these sensing difficulties. The proposed control scheme uses the velocity of the predecessor vehicle, communicated through a Vehicle-to-Vehicle technology, to avoid significant oscillations in the local speed provoked by tracking using unreliable local distance measurements. We implement the proposed control algorithm in the RUPU platform, a low-cost experimental platform with wireless communication interfaces that enable the implementation of cooperative control schemes for mobile agent platooning. The experiments show the effectiveness of the proposed cooperative control scheme in maintaining a suitable performance even when subject to temporal distortions in local measurements, which, in the considered experimental setup, arise from losing the line-of-sight of the local sensors in paths with closed curves. Measurement While Drilling (MWD) is a technology for assessing rock mass conditions by collecting and analyzing data of mechanical drilling variables while the system operates. Nowadays, typical MWD systems rely on physical sensors directly installed on the drill rig. Sensors used in this context must be designed and conditioned for operating in harsh conditions, imposing trade-offs between the complexity, cost, and reliability of the measurement system. This paper presents a methodology for integrating physics-based observers into an MWD system as an alternative to complement or replace traditional physical sensors. The proposed observers leverage mathematical models of the drill's electrical motor and its interaction with dynamic loads to estimate the bit speed and torque in a Down-the-Hole rig using current and voltage measurements taken from the motor power line. Experiments using data collected from four test samples with different rock strengths show a consistent correlation between the rate of penetration and specific energy derived from the observed drilling variables with the ones obtained from standardized tests of uniaxial compressive strength. The simplicity of the setup and results validate the feasibility of the proposed approach to be evaluated as an alternative to reduce the complexity and increase the reliability of MWD systems. This paper proposes a model-based predictive control strategy based on mixed-integer linear programming for a photovoltaic power plant with battery energy storage. The control objective is to maximize the revenues from energy delivered from both photovoltaic panels and batteries to the grid in a deregulated electricity market. For each control interval, the proposed algorithm incorporates information on solar radiation, market prices, and the state of charge of the batteries to determine the intervals of energy injection into the grid to maximize the economic benefits. The proposed strategy considers the rate-based variable efficiency in the battery model and time-varying energies prices, thus providing a more general implementation than previous schemes proposed in the literature for the same purpose. Simulations considering the operational procedures of the Spanish market as a case study show that, by integrating the battery efficiency in the model, the proposed control strategy increments the economic benefits in 21% compared to previous results reported in the literature for the same operational conditions. Nowadays, conventional agriculture farms lack high-level automated management due to the limited number of installed sensor nodes and measuring devices. Recent progress of the Internet of Things (IoT) technologies will play an essential role in future smart farming by enabling automated operations with minimum human intervention. The main objective of this work is to design and implement a flexible IoT-based platform for remote monitoring of agriculture farms of different scales, enabling continuous data collection from various IoT devices (sensors, actuators, meteorological masts, and drones). Such data will be available for end-users to improve decision-making and for training and validating advanced prediction algorithms. Unlike related works that concentrate on specific applications or evaluate technical aspects of specific layers of the IoT stack, this work considers a versatile approach and technical aspects at four layers: farm perception layer, sensors and actuators layer, communication layer, and application layer. The proposed solutions have been designed, implemented, and assessed for remote monitoring of plants, soil, and environmental conditions based on LoRaWAN technology. Results collected through both simulation and experimental validation show that the platform can be used to obtain valuable analytics of real-time monitoring that enable decisions and actions such as, for example, controlling the irrigation system or generating alarms. The contribution of this article relies on proposing a flexible hardware and software platform oriented on monitoring agriculture farms of different scales, based on LoRaWAN technology. The dynamic performance of a microgrid is governed by the decentralized primary control strategy that is embedded in each of its hosted Distributed Energy Resource (DER) units. The primary control computes the voltage synthesized by the interfacing voltage-sourced converter such that the DER unit contributes active and reactive powers in support of the microgrid voltage amplitude and frequency. These operational requirements must be satisfied with respect to the converter safety and physical limitations, such as the limited magnitude of the converter output current and terminal voltage. In this paper, all the control requirements mentioned above are taken into account in a single constrained optimization problem using the framework of Model-based Predictive Control (MPC). Solving the primary control problem in this way allows the microgrid to respond to major disturbances such short-circuit faults and transitions between modes of operation, while the electronically-interfaced DER units operate within operational and safety limits. Real-time Ethernet (RTE) is widely recognized for its potential to provide a unified communication backbone for next-generation heterogeneous distributed systems. However, most of the existing research in RTE technologies has traditionally focused on formal models and theoretical analyzes of timing properties, usually omitting the associated implementation challenges for testing them in practice. This gap between theory and practice prevents experimental validation of the claimed properties, which in turn hinders the pace of innovation and adoption of the technology in industrial settings. This paper aims at narrowing the theory-practice gap by characterizing a comprehensive open-source RTE framework that explores emerging challenges in real-time networking, including the provision of ultra-low latency and jitter, dynamic bandwidth management, and segmentation within large networks. This work integrates research on formal abstractions for dynamic time-division multiple access arbitration and technological insights from modern hardware infrastructure, and uses a representative distributed video processing application to provide reproducible evidence of the achieved properties in multihop Ethernet settings. By leveraging readily available technology and an open-source design, the proposed framework facilitates further exploration and experimental validation of properties that are beyond the scope of current commercial technologies, encouraging evidence-based discussions to accelerate development and adoption of new standards for next-generation industrial networks. Safety-critical distributed real-time applications operating with strict temporal constraints rely on deterministic networks with low latency and jitter. Traditional fieldbus systems deliver these guarantees, but they have limited compatibility with open infrastructures and limited support for high transmission rates. Ethernet technology rises as a low-cost, high-speed, and ubiquitous alternative to fieldbus systems; however, standard Ethernet requires special arbitration mechanisms to support real-time traffic because of the standard's inherent nondeterministic behavior. This work explores the associated tradeoffs for three different solutions for real-time communication over switched Ethernet. The paper presents and discusses three architectures that modify different network components, enhancing them with additional customized modules to support time-triggered communication based on Network Code. Using the NetFPGA platform as the unified prototyping technology for all the components, we developed an open-source framework to characterize each solution using experimental data for the latency, jitter, throughput, robustness, and cost in logical resources. The results provide insights to help future developers of real-time communication technology decide which components to modify according to the requirements of their applications. Analog very large scale integration implementations of neural networks can compute using a fraction of the size and power required by their digital counterparts. However, intrinsic limitations of analog hardware, such as device mismatch, charge leakage, and noise, reduce the accuracy of analog arithmetic circuits, degrading the performance of large-scale adaptive systems. In this paper, we present a detailed mathematical analysis that relates different parameters of the hardware limitations to specific effects on the convergence properties of linear perceptrons trained with the least-mean-square (LMS) algorithm. Using this analysis, we derive design guidelines and introduce simple on-chip calibration techniques to improve the accuracy of analog neural networks with a small cost in die area and power dissipation. We validate our analysis by evaluating the performance of a mixed-signal complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor implementation of a 32-input perceptron trained with LMS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Industrial combustion processes are an important source of particulate matter, causing significant pollution problems that affect human health, and are a major contributor to global warming. The most common method for analyzing the soot emission propensity in flames is the Smoke Point Height (SPH) analysis, which relates the fuel flow rate to a critical flame height at which soot particles begin to leave the reactive zone through the tip of the flame. The SPH and is marked by morphological changes on the flame tip. SPH analysis is normally done through flame observations with the naked eye, leading to high bias. Other techniques are more accurate, but are not practical to implement in industrial settings, such as the Line Of Sight Attenuation (LOSA), which obtains soot volume fractions within the flame from the attenuation of a laser beam. We propose the use of Video Magnification techniques to detect the flame morphological changes and thus determine the SPH minimizing observation bias. We have applied for the first time Eulerian Video Magnification (EVM) and Phase-based Video Magnification (PVM) on an ethylene laminar diffusion flame.
