: Introduction: There is paucity of data related to potential gender differences in the use of interventions to prevent and treat cardiovascular disease (CVD) among HIV‐positive individuals. We investigated whether such differences exist in the observational D:A:D cohort study. Methods: Participants were followed from study enrolment until the earliest of death, six months after last visit or February 1, 2015. Initiation of CVD interventions [lipid‐lowering drugs (LLDs), angiotensin‐converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs), anti‐hypertensives, invasive cardiovascular procedures (ICPs) were investigated and Poisson regression models calculated whether rates were lower among women than men, adjusting for potential confounders. Results: Women (n = 12,955) were generally at lower CVD risk than men (n = 36,094). Overall, initiation rates of CVD interventions were lower in women than men; LLDs: incidence rate 1.28 [1.21, 1.35] vs. 2.40 [2.34, 2.46]; ACEIs: 0.88 [0.82, 0.93] vs. 1.43 [1.39, 1.48]; anti‐hypertensives: 1.40 [1.33, 1.47] vs. 1.72 [1.68, 1.77] and ICPs: 0.08 [0.06, 0.10] vs. 0.30 [0.28, 0.32], and this was also true for most CVD interventions when exclusively considering periods of follow‐up for which individuals were at high CVD risk. In fully adjusted models, women were less likely to receive CVD interventions than men (LLDs: relative rate 0.83 [0.78, 0.88]; ACEIs: 0.93 [0.86, 1.01]; ICPs: 0.54 [0.43, 0.68]), except for the receipt of anti‐hypertensives (1.17 [1.10, 1.25]). Conclusion: The use of most CVD interventions was lower among women than men. Interventions are needed to ensure that all HIV‐positive persons, particularly women, are appropriately monitored for CVD and, if required, receive appropriate CVD interventions., Introduction HIV‐positive individuals are known to be at increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) compared to the general population, partly due to an increased prevalence of some CVD risk factors, [...]

The aim was to investigate the feasibility of using a device to characterize permeability in porous substrates with low gas flux. Al
2 O3 supports were prepared by dry pressing using 1 to 3 wt% of polyethylene glycol (PEG) as a pore-forming agent. The green body was partially sintered at 1300 °C. CO2 gas was used to measure both the pressure loss and the gas flux passing through the porous substrate. The permeability behavior was analyzed by the Darcy and Forchheimer models. The correlation between Darcy's and Forchheimer's permeabilities showed that the porous substrates may be used as membranes for micro, ultra, and nanofiltration. The mechanical resistance and the gas permeability exhibited antagonistic dependencies in relation to porosity, being identified as an optimized condition at 2 wt% PEG, in which the two properties presented high values. The so-called half-metallic magnets have been proposed as good candidates for spintronic applications due to the feature of exhibiting a hundred percent spin polarization at the Fermi level. Such materials follow the Slater-Pauling rule, which relates the magnetic moment with the valence electrons in the system. In this paper, we study the bulk polycrystalline half-metallic Fe
2 MnSi Heusler compound replacing Si by Ga to determine how the Ga addition changes the magnetic, the structural, and the half-metal properties of this compound. The material does not follow the Slater-Pauling rule, probably due to a minor structural disorder degree in the system, but a linear dependence on the magnetic transition temperature with the valence electron number points to the half-metallic behavior of this compound. The magnetic anisotropy of 3d sub-lattices has an important rule on the overall magnetic properties of hard magnets. Intermetallics alloys with boron (R-Co/Ni-B, for instance) belong to those hard magnets family and are useful objects to help to understand the magnetic behavior of 3d sub-lattice, specially when the rare earth ions R do not have magnetic nature, like YCo
4 B ferromagnetic material. Interestingly, YNi4 B is a paramagnetic material and Ni ions do not contribute to the magnetic anisotropy. We focused therefore our attention to YNi4-x Cox B series, with x=0, 1, 2, 3, and 4. The magnetic anisotropy of these compounds is deeper described using statistical and preferential models of Co occupation among the possible Wyckoff positions into the CeCo4 B type hexagonal structure. We found that the preferential model is the most suitable to explain the magnetization experimental data. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

Objectives: Five to eight per cent of HIV‐positive individuals initiating abacavir (ABC) experience potentially fatal hypersensitivity reactions (HSRs). We sought to describe the proportion of individuals initiating ABC and to describe the incidence and factors associated with HSR among those prescribed ABC. Methods: We calculated the proportion of EuroSIDA individuals receiving ABC‐based combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) among those receiving cART after 1 January 2009. Poisson regression was used to identify demographic, and current clinical and laboratory factors associated with ABC utilization and discontinuation. Results: Between 2009 and 2016, of 10 076 individuals receiving cART, 3472 (34%) had ever received ABC‐based cART. Temporal trends of ABC utilization were also heterogeneous, with 28% using ABC in 2009, dropping to 26% in 2010 and increasing to 31% in 2016, and varied across regions and over time. Poisson models showed lower ABC utilization in older individuals, and in those with higher CD4 cell counts, higher cART lines, and prior AIDS. Higher ABC utilization was associated with higher HIV RNA and poor renal function, and was more common in Central‐East and Eastern Europe and lowest during 2014. During 779 person‐years of follow‐up (PYFU) in 2139 individuals starting ABC after 1 January 2009, 113 discontinued ABC within 6 weeks of initiation for any reason [incidence rate (IR) 14.5 (95% confidence interval (CI) 12.1, 17.5) per 100 PYFU], 13 because of reported HSR [IR 0.3 (95% CI 0.1, 1.0) per 100 PYFU] and 35 because of reported HSR/any toxicity [IR 4.5 (95% CI 3.2, 6.3) per 100 PYFU]. There were no factors significantly associated with ABC discontinuation because of reported HSR/any toxicity. Conclusions: ABC remains commonly used across Europe and the incidence of discontinuation because of reported HSR was low in our study population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The limitation of the progression of internal erosion in zoned dams, potentially caused by an upstream zone built of coarse, well-graded soils with non-plastic fines, is assessed using a new test cell. This device allows two types of tests to be conducted: the flow-limiting erosion test (FLET) and the crack-filling erosion test (CFET), which are designed to study the isolated influence of the flow-limiting action and the crack-filling action, respectively. The specimen is subjected to water flow along a hole drilled in the core and the upstream zone. In the CFET, the specimen additionally includes a downstream filter. Three upstream materials with non-plastic fines, a core and a filter are examined. The results of nine FLETs and nine CFETs are presented and analysed. The FLETs show the clear influence of the compaction water content, fines content and gravel content of the upstream soils in their capability to provide the flow-limiting action. The CFETs show that the specimen using the coarsest upstream soil (with 21% non-plastic fines) compacted on the dry side is capable of stopping the progression of erosion, enabling a partial crack-filling action. In all other test conditions, the filtering mechanism due to erosion of the upstream soil provides an important limitation of the erosion process. Based on the tests, practical recommendations to assess the influence of upstream zones on the limitation of internal erosion are proposed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Several different phenomena are involved in the formation and performance of self-hardening slurry walls, including slurry contamination by soil, penetration of slurry into the ground, confining with the trench, filtration, sedimentation, consolidation, and chemical reactions between the slurry constituents. To evaluate the relative influence of these phenomena, a case study is analyzed-the cutoff wall of Santa Clara-a-Velha Monastery, built in 2001-2002. The performance of this wall is related to the in situ phenomena through data obtained during construction and from a site investigation conducted in 2011. An extensive laboratorial program was performed on samples cored from the wall and on laboratory-made samples. It was found that consolidation was the major contributor to the significant settlement of the wall that occurred after trench excavation, whereas filtration and sedimentation made only a secondary contribution. Contamination by sand only interfered with the physical properties and compressibility of the slurry. The unusual hydromechanical behavior of the wall material, when compared with soils, was attributed to the combined effect of consolidation, cement hydration, and pozzolanic reactions. - Abstract
Despite great efforts to enhance European epidemiological surveillance on carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (CPE), information from several countries remains scarce. To address CPE epidemiology in Portugal, we have undertaken a retrospective cohort study of adults with CPE cultures identified in the microbiology laboratory of a tertiary hospital, in 2012. Sixty patients from 25 wards or intensive care units were identified. This is, to the best of our knowledge, the first report of clinical data on CPE in Portugal. It shows a hospital-wide CPE dissemination and alerts us to an evolving epidemiological situation not previously described. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
In this paper, a Maximum a Posteriori Reconstruction algorithm using a Modified Median Root Prior is applied to data from the Siemens 3TMR-BrainPET scanner. This Prior was implemented in the PET REconstruction Software TOolkit (PRESTO) [1] which uses Highly Rotation-Symmetric Voxel Assemblies. The Modified Median Root Prior was developed to take advantage of the anatomical information coming from MR images. Simulated data was used to quantitatively assess the performance of the algorithm. Simultaneously acquired PET and MR data of a human patient was used to show the feasibility of this Prior. The results are compared to those of OSEM and of standard MRP and show a better Mean Squared Error. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

CARDIAC arrest , *SPRINTING , *LACTIC acidosis , *BLOOD lactate , *PHYSICAL fitness , *HEART beat , *INTERVAL analysis - Abstract
Team sport match play requires athletes to perform a number of repeated shuttle sprints. However, the acute effects of these repeated sprint sequences on lactic acidosis and resulting autonomic state perturbation are not known. The aim of this study was to observe and compare the blood lactate and post-exercise cardiac autonomic responses of a repeated shuttle-sprint ability test with the 30-15 Intermittent Fitness Test (30-15IFT); the latter test representing a standard for exhaustive supramaximal effort. Thirteen adult team sport players performed the repeated shuttle-sprint ability test and the 30-15IFT on separate days in a counter-balanced order. The repeated shuttle-sprint ability test consisted of six repetitions of maximal 2 x 15 m shuttle sprints (-5s) departing every 20s, while the 30-15IFT involved progressive 30s shuttle runs interspersed with 15s of passive recovery until exhaustion. Blood lactate was measured before and after the tests, while autonomic responses were assessed using immediate heart rate recovery and heart rate variability indices. Peak blood lactate (10.6±2.1 vs. 10.2±2.8mM) and heart beats recovered in one minute after exercise cessation (36.4±7.8 vs. 39.3 ±7.9bpm) were similar after both the repeated shuttle-sprint ability test and the 30-15IFT. With the exception of the vagal-related time-varying root mean square of successive R-R interval differences at each 30s, which recovered earlier after the repeated shuttle-sprint ability test compared with 30-15IFT, all heart rate variability indices decreased similarly after both tests in comparison to baseline values. In conclusion, the repeated shuttle-sprint ability test was shown to induce comparable levels of lactic acidosis and post-exercise autonomic state as the 30-15IFT. These levels of metabolic and autonomic states are likely to occur during team sport match play. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Our objective was to compare the utilization of healthcare/support services for people with HIV infection in Europe. Between August 1996 and September 1997 self-administered anonymous questionnaires were distributed by reference HIV treatment centres and HIV support organizations. The questionnaire was completed by 1366 people living with HIV/AIDS. A small number of people had received influenza or pneumococcal vaccinations (34% and 19% respectively). Many patients did not receive dental care (48% of participants from the southern countries) and only 72% of the women had a gynaecological examination. More participants from the south reported insufficient access to healthcare/support services, particularly for nursing care (19%), psychological support (33%), nutritional advice (45%), access to support organizations (36%), and legal advice (46%). In conclusion, many people living with HIV/AIDS in Europe do not benefit from certain annual medical procedures proposed by international guidelines and consider themselves to have insufficient access to health/support services. Abstract: Using magnetic resonance (MR) information in maximum a posteriori (MAP) algorithms for positron emission tomography (PET) image reconstruction has been investigated in the last years. Recently, three methods to introduce this information have been evaluated and the Bowsher prior was considered the best. Its main advantage is that it does not require image segmentation. Another method that has been widely used for incorporating MR information is using boundaries obtained by segmentation. This method has also shown improvements in image quality. In this paper, two methods for incorporating MR information in PET reconstruction are compared. After a Bayes parameter optimization, the reconstructed images were compared using the mean squared error (MSE) and the coefficient of variation (CV). MSE values are 3% lower in Bowsher than using boundaries. CV values are 10% lower in Bowsher than using boundaries. Both methods performed better than using no prior, that is, maximum likelihood expectation maximization (MLEM) or MAP without anatomic information in terms of MSE and CV. Concluding, incorporating MR information using the Bowsher prior gives better results in terms of MSE and CV than boundaries. MAP algorithms showed again to be effective in noise reduction and convergence, specially when MR information is incorporated. The robustness of the priors in respect to noise and inhomogeneities in the MR image has however still to be performed. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The objective of this study was to evaluate the quality of buffalo milk using as a parameter the fatty acid profile of Murrah water buffalo milk in early and late lactation stage, on tropical pasture (Brachiaria decumbens). The samples were collected from thirty-eight animals at a herd (Bahia state, Brazil). The fatty acid profile was performed by gas chromatography and the statistics analysis was carried out using Test t of Student for matching data at 5% significance. Higher concentrations of saturated fatty acids in early and late lactation were observed. In turn, there was an increase of monounsaturated fatty acids concentration. In assessing the nutritional quality of lipid fraction, the buffalo's milk from the late stage lactation was more nutritionally adequate food intake. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Oil and gas industry is constantly facing challenges in prospecting and transport, dealing with the corrosion and degradation of the pipelines. This work presents an electrochemical evaluation of API X65 steel exposed to CO 2 /thiosulfate (10−3mol/l) aqueous deaerated medium. Sweet and sour corrosion were studied simultaneously. Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) and Linear Polarization Resistance (LPR) tests were performed using an autoclave, 5 bar of CO 2 partial pressure at 25, 90 and 120 °C with and without H 2 S. Corrosion products were characterized by Weight loss, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD). Protective corrosion conditions were achieved at 120 °C with and without H 2 S. Without H 2 S, a stable and denser FeCO 3 film was formed. With H 2 S, FeS film reduced the CO 2 corrosive effect and retarded FeCO 3 precipitation. Both cases demonstrated an improvement of the substrate corrosion resistance at 120 °C. At this temperature occurred a competitive films formation, reflecting in a corrosion rate decrease. • Sodium thiossulfate addition was efficient on H 2 S generation and FeS films precipitation. • The temperature increase favored the formation of sweet and sour corrosion stable products. • Initial adsorbed forms of FeS hindered the FeCO 3 layer mechanism in conditions with CO 2 and H 2 S. • Competitive mechanism of sweet and sour corrosion was clearly seen at 120 °C.
