Evidence from molecular studies indicates that myxomycetes (also called myxogastrids or plasmodial slime molds) have a long evolutionary history, and the oldest known fossil is from the mid-Cretaceous. However, they were not "discovered" until 1654, when a brief description and a woodcut depicting what is almost certainly the common species Lycogala epidendrum was published. First thought to be fungi, myxomycetes were not universally recognized as completely distinct until well into the twentieth century. Biodiversity surveys for the group being carried out over several years are relatively recent, with what is apparently the first example being carried out in the 1930s. Beginning in the 1980s, a series of such surveys yielded large bodies of data on the occurrence and distribution of myxomycetes in terrestrial ecosystems. The most notable of these were the All Taxa Biodiversity Inventory (ATBI) project carried out in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the Planetary Biodiversity Inventory Project (PBI) carried out in localities throughout the world, and the Myxotropic project being carried out throughout the Neotropics. The datasets available from both past and ongoing surveys now allow global and biogeographical patterns of myxomycetes to be assessed for the first time. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Nature-conservation practices in the Global South are fraught with uncertainty due to fragile environmental governance and conflict stemming from their subaltern position in global capitalism, given the tension between human needs and habitat integrity. This article hinges on a recent effort spear-headed by the Centre of Conservation Studies at University of San Carlos in Guatemala, to discuss how a counterhegemonic narrative offers fertile grounds for a decolonized reading of the metabolic rift. I use my notes from eight workshops held in 2018 as the empirical body for a discourse analysis where the emerging categories have been singled out and problematized in the light of ethnoecological theory and David Harvey's moments for the transition towards a post-Capitalist society vis-à-vis a prevailing environmental regime characterized by its verticality, lack of scientific substantiation, and proclivity to privilege exchange value at the expense of widening the metabolic rift. This regime arguably spawns several ecological rifts, namely the following: (1) between conventional scientific parlance and traditional ecological knowledge; (2) between utility-inspired natural resource management and local land husbandry practices; and (3) between nature as a reservoir of resources and nature as the sustenance for life. In addition, I present a case study where local advocacy in a peripheral community managed to bring about a relevant shift in the correlation of political powers by seizing the national legislation to achieve a transfer of property rights that enabled the inception of a brand-new nature reserve. The new conservation paradigm in question, this case seems to suggest, dovetails adequately with civil society's efforts to foster nature-conservation practices, in line with human well-being and sound environmental governance. The latter provides some evidence for a principle of hope – à la Ernst Bloch – whereby, dissident groups are paving the way for a grassroots-oriented conservation science that eventually could bridge the metabolic rift. Purpose: Conversations surrounding gender are sweeping the globe as the voices and lived experiences of people are being heard and shared at unprecedented rates. Discourses about gender in advertising are embedded in cultural narratives and legitimatized by a broad system of institutional structures and actors, at both macro and micro/consumer levels. This study aims to explore how consumers (one type of institutional actor) engage in legitimizing/delegitimizing messages of gender in the marketplace. Design/methodology/approach: This research draws on a qualitative approach, specifically the use of in-depth interviews with men across three global contexts. Findings: This research identifies the ways in which men engage in (de)legitimizing messages of masculinity in advertising such as reiteration, reframing, ascribing to alternate logics and prioritizing personal norms. Research limitations/implications: Across three contexts, this research theorizes the (de)legitimization of gender ideals in advertising and situates consumer narratives within broader institutional forces, providing a holistic understanding of the phenomenon. Practical implications: Understanding the ways in which individuals either accept or reject gendered ideals in media aids advertising and marketing professionals in tailoring messages that resonate with audiences. Social implications: Understanding how individuals negotiate their gender and the messages they deem as legitimate are crucial to understanding gender issues related to consumer welfare and public policy. Originality/value: While research has examined advertising practitioners' views regarding gender from an institutional perspective, research on how consumers construct and maintain the legitimacy of gendered messages in the marketplace is scarce. Background: The WORLD07 project is a female specific database to assess the characteristics of women with lung cancer. Methods: WORLD07 database sets up in 2007, and prospectively stores clinical characteristics, treatment, outcome, and follow-up of lung cancer women. All women with epidermal growth factor receptor ( EGFR) mutation non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) were selected for this analysis. Results: From October 2007 to December 2012, a total of 1775 NSCLC women were recruited. EGFR mutation was identified in 34.4% of patients. Upfront EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) reported a response rate of 60%, a median progression-free survival of 11.7 months, and median overall survival of 23.0 months. EGFR TKI, EGFR-mutation type, and smoking status did not impact in the outcome of treated women. Conclusion: Prevalence of EGFR mutation in women with NSCLC is higher than overall population with NSCLC. Efficacy of EGFR TKI in this real-world setting is similar to that previously reported. The Pyrenean mountain range is a slowly deforming belt with continuous and moderate seismic activity. To quantify its deformation field, we present the velocity field estimated from a GPS survey of the Pyrenees spanning 18 yr. The PotSis and ResPyr networks, including a total of 85 GPS sites, were installed and first measured in 1992 and 1995-1997, respectively, and remeasured in 2008 and 2010.We obtain a deformation field with velocities less than 1mmyr-1 across the range. The estimated velocities for individual stations do not differ significantly from zero with 95 per cent confidence. Even so,we estimate a maximum extensional horizontal strain rate of 2.0 ± 1.7 nanostrain per year in a N--S direction in the western part of the range. We do not interpret the vertical displacements due to their large uncertainties. In order to compare the horizontal strain rates with the seismic activity, we analyse a set of 194 focal mechanisms using three methods: (i) the 'r' factor relating their P and T axes, (ii) the stress tensors obtained by fault slip inversion and (iii) the strain-rate tensors. Stress and strain-rate tensors are estimated for: (i) the whole data set, (ii) the eastern and western parts of the range separately, and (iii) eight zones, which are defined based on the seismicity and the tectonic patterns of the Pyrenees. Each of these analyses reveals a lateral variation of the deformation style from compression and extension in the east to extension and strike-slip in the west of the range. Although the horizontal components of the strain-rate tensors estimated from the seismic data are slightly smaller in magnitude than those computed from the GPS velocity field, they are consistent within the 2σ uncertainties. Cellulose is a major and important component of the extracellular matrix during the development of Dictyostelium discoideum. Upon starvation, solitary amoebae of D. discoideum gather and form fruiting bodies in which cells differentiate into stalk cells and spores. The stalk tubes and walls of spores and stalk cells are made of cellulose. In the genus Acytostelium, however, all cells are destined to become spores and the stalks comprise only a cellulose tube, suggesting species-specific regulation of cellulose synthesis. In this study, we cloned a putative cellulose synthase gene ( cesA) of Acytostelium subglobosum and performed comparative analyses with the D. discoideum cellulose synthase gene ( dcsA). Although the deduced amino acid sequences were highly conserved between cesA and dcsA, the numbers of transmembrane spans preceding the catalytic domain were dissimilar; 2 and 3, respectively. Since ectopic expression of cesA in dcsA−null cells failed to restore the developmental defects of the mutant, we constructed a series of chimerical genes for complementation analyses and found that the catalytic domain of cesA was functional in D. discoideum cells if the preceding transmembrane region was swapped with dcsA. The non-functional products that contained the cesA-derived transmembrane region were localized to lysosomes. These results indicate that the transmembrane region of cellulose synthase is essential for proper accumulation of cellulose during the development of D. discoideum and that its differential localization in A. subglobosum may be related to the characteristic morphogenesis in this species. Fibrolamellar carcinomas are a unique type of primary liver cancer. They occur most commonly in children and young adults. Their etiology remains a mystery, as they are not associated with chronic liver disease. Fibrolamellar carcinomas are not indolent tumors, but have an overall better prognosis than typical hepatocellular carcinomas, in part because of the younger age at presentation and the lack of cirrhosis. The most important prognostic feature is whether the tumor is resectable. Histologically, the tumor is made up of large cells that contain abundant mitochondria. The nuclei of the tumor cells have prominent nucleoli. The tumor cells induce the formation of extensive intratumoral fibrosis, which often grows in parallel, or lamellar bands. The tumor cells clearly show hepatocellular features but are also unique in showing both biliary and neuroendocrine differentiation. The uniqueness of fibrolamellar carcinoma extends to their molecular findings. While the genetic abnormalities that lead to fibrolamellar carcinomas are not yet known, studies have shown that they lack mutations in the genes most commonly mutated in typical hepatocellular carcinoma (TP53 and CTNNB1). In this paper, the clinical, pathological, and basic science literature on fibrolamellar carcinoma is comprehensively reviewed. Key areas of needed research are also discussed. Systemic cancer is the second most common cause of death in developed countries and metastatic brain tumour the most common tumour of the central nervous system (CNS). As the incidence of brain metastases appears to be rising, more accurate non-invasive imaging modalities for diagnosis, prognosis, prediction and follow-up of treatment are requisites for efficient patient management. Positron emission tomography (PET) imaging has the ability to evaluate different aspects of tumour microenvironment on the molecular and cellular level and impact the workup of patients with brain metastasis. Although systemic amyloidosis of amyloid-associated protein (AA) type (secondary or reactive amyloidosis) frequently involves the liver, it rarely causes clinically apparent liver disease. Mild elevation of alkaline phosphatase and hepatomegaly are the most common biochemical and clinical findings, respectively. We report a case of systemic amyloidosis of AA type, which clinically presented as subacute hepatic failure and resulted in a fatal clinical course in a 69-year-old man. To the best of our knowledge, this is the fifth case of hepatic amyloidosis of AA type that clinically presented as fatal subacute hepatic failure, an unusual clinical presentation for hepatic involvement by systemic AA-type amyloid. Background: n-ELAV (neuronal-Embryonic Lethal, Abnormal Vision)-like genes belong to a family codifying for onconeural RNA-binding proteins. Anti-Hu-antibodies (anti-Hu-Ab) are typically associated with paraneoplastic encephalomyelitis/sensory neuropathy (PEM/PSN), and low titres of anti-Hu-Ab, were found in newly diagnosed Small Cell Lung Cancer (SCLC). The aim of this study is to develop a sensitive and quantitative molecular real-time PCR assay to detect SCLC cells in peripheral blood (PB) through nELAV-like transcripts quantification. Methods: Peripheral blood samples from 25 SCLC untreated patients and 12 healthy blood donors were investigated by real-time PCR. mRNA levels for HuB (ELAV2), HuC (ELAV3) and HuD (ELAV4) were measured in peripheral blood samples with an absolute quantification method using plasmid dilutions as calibration curves. Results: A statistically significant increase in mRNA expression level was detected for HuB and HuD in SCLC patients as compared with samples from healthy blood donors. After establishing cut off values based on the level of expression in control samples, 28% of the SCLC samples were positive for HuD expression. Overall 60% of the SCLC displayed increased level of HuD or HuB transcripts. Conclusion: Our preliminary results suggest that neuron-ELAV mRNA are detectable in peripheral blood of SCLC patients using real-time quantitative PCR. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In recent years the role of chemotherapy in advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) has been well established. Ifosfamide is an old drug still considered an effective cytostatic agent in the treatment of NSCLC. As a single agent, it has showed a response rate of 20–25%. These results are improved when it is used in combination with cisplatin and mitomycin C. Moreover, in recent years, several new drugs like gemcitabine, taxanes and vinorelbine have been identified, and combinations of two or three drugs have been tested in patients with advanced NSCLC. This paper reviews the main studies recently conducted for the treatment of NSCLC, considering the results obtained by ifosfamide alone and in combination. Three-drug regimens including first-generation cytostatic agents achieve a response rate of about 40% and median survival of 10 months. In combinations with new drugs, ifosfamide shows an improvement in response rate (50%) with a median survival of more than 1 year. Open questions in the treatment of NSCLC are whether three-drug are better than two-drug combinations, and whether cisplatin is still required.Copyright © 2003 S. The epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)3 is a 170 kD transmembrane tyrosine kinase activated by several ligands. It is required for normal mammary development and lactation and is aberrantly expressed in approximately 40% of breast carcinomas, particularly those with a poor prognostic phenotype. Since EGF receptor levels are elevated in a high proportion of many tumor types its potential as a therapy target is being investigated using the EGF receptor to target toxins, as well as drugs that interfere with signaling and anti-receptor antibodies. Thirty two mouse ascitic fluids containing monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) directed against the hexon of human adenovirus type 1 were examined. The type and degree of cross-reactivity (CR) of the MAbs were determined by ELISA and hemagglutination methods with 10 heterologous hexon types. The similarity and the dissimilarity of the MAbs was also characterized by the correlation coefficient calculated from their reactivity values. On the basis of these, the 32 MAbs could be divided into five groups and fourteen individual MAbs, which altogether recognized 19 distinct epitopes. One of the recognized epitopes is the genus specific epitope of adenovirus hexons; the others are interspecies specific ones which can be found on the surface of the different hexon types in characteristic, mosaic-like combinations. The type and degree of CR of the MAbs lead to the conclusion that there exists a close antigenic relationship among the members of subgenus C of human adenoviruses and there is also a definite antigenic relationship between subgenera C and D. Affibody protein is an engineered protein scaffold with a three-helical bundle structure. Affibody molecules of small size (7 kD)have great potential for targeting overexpressed cancer biomarkers in vivo. To develop an Affibody-based molecular probe for in vivooptical imaging of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) positive tumors, an anti-EGFR Affibody molecule, Ac-Cys-ZEGFR:1907(7 kD), is site-specifically conjugated with a near-IR fluorescence dye, Cy5.5-mono-maleimide. Using fluorescent microscopy, the binding specificity of the probe Cy5.5-ZEGFR:1907is checked by a high-EGFR-expressing A431 cell and low-EGFR-expressing MCF7 cells. The binding affinity of Cy5.5-ZEGFR:1907(KD)to EGFR is 43.6±8.4 nM, as determined by flow cytometry. For an in vivoimaging study, the probe shows fast tumor targeting and good tumor contrast as early as 0.5 hpostinjection (p.i.) for A431 tumors, while MCF7 tumors are barely visible. An ex vivoimaging study also demonstrates that Cy5.5-ZEGFR:1907has high tumor, liver, and kidney uptakes at 24 hp.i.. In conclusion, Cy5.5-ZEGFR:1907shows good affinity and high specificity to the EGFR. There is rapid achievement of good tumor-to-normal-tissue contrasts of Cy5.5-ZEGFR:1907, thus demonstrating its potential for EGFR-targeted molecular imaging of cancers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
