In a superconductor that lacks inversion symmetry, the spatial part of the Cooper pair wave function has a reduced symmetry, allowing for the mixing of spin-singlet and spin-triplet Cooper pairing channels and thus providing a pathway to a non-trivial superconducting state. Materials with a non-centrosymmetric crystal structure and with strong spin–orbit coupling are a platform to realize these possibilities. Here, we report the synthesis and characterisation of high quality crystals of Sn _4 As _3 , with non-centrosymmetric unit cell ( R 3 m ). We have characterised the normal and superconducting states using a range of methods. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy shows a multiband Fermi surface and the presence of two surface states, confirmed by density-functional theory calculations. Specific heat measurements reveal a superconducting critical temperature of T _c ∼ 1.14 K and an upper critical magnetic field of μ _0 H _c ≳ 7 mT, which are both confirmed by ultra-low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. Scanning tunneling spectroscopy shows a fully formed superconducting gap, consistent with conventional s -wave superconductivity.

Cattle farming faces challenges linked to intensive exploitation and climate change, requiring the reinforcement of animal resilience in response to these dynamic environments. Currently, genetic selection is used to enhance resilience by identifying animals resistant to specific diseases; however, certain diseases, such as mastitis, pose difficulties in genetic prediction. This study introduced the utilization of enzymatic methyl sequencing (EM-seq) of the blood genomic DNA from twelve dairy cows to identify DNA methylation biomarkers, with the aim of predicting resilience and susceptibility to mastitis. The analysis uncovered significant differences between cows resilient and susceptible to mastitis, with 196,275 differentially methylated cytosines (DMCs) and 1,227 Differentially Methylated Regions (DMRs). Key genes associated with the immune response and morphological traits, including ENOPH1, MYL10 and KIR2DL5A, were identified by our analysis. Quantitative trait loci (QTL) were also highlighted and the body weight trait was the most targeted by DMCs and DMRs. Based on our results, the risk of developing mastitis can potentially be estimated with as few as fifty methylation biomarkers, paving the way for early animal selection. This research sets the stage for improved animal health management and economic yields within the framework of agricultural sustainability through early selection based on the epigenetic status of animals.

INTRODUCTION: Hernias, particularly groin hernias, are prevalent surgical pathologies worldwide, often necessitating surgery in cases of complications. This study investigates the safety and efficacy of performing bilateral inguinal hernioplasty when one side faces complications, addressing the lack of consensus in emergency groin hernia treatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective, single-center study spanning a duration of 10 years was conducted, including adult patients who underwent emergency surgery for inguinal hernia. Propensity score matching was employed to create similar groups for comparative analysis of unilateral versus bilateral emergency groin hernioplasty. Surgical techniques, complications, mortality, and long-term outcomes were evaluated. RESULTS: This study included 341 patients. Data obtained from the study revealed high morbidity and 90-day mortality rates, consistent with the data of existing literature. Propensity score matching yielded two comparable groups. Short-term outcomes showed no significant differences in complication rates, mortality, surgical site infection, or hospital stay between unilateral and bilateral hernioplasty groups. Bilateral surgery takes approximately 15 min of the procedure time. Long-term outcomes exhibited similar recurrence rates between groups. CONCLUSION: This study supports the practice of bilateral inguinal hernioplasty in emergency scenarios when one side faces complications. It is a safe approach without any significant increase in morbidity or hospital stay, while reducing the need for a subsequent intervention and its associated risks and costs. Further prospective research is necessary to confirm these findings.

Reverse left ventricular (LV) remodeling after aortic valve replacement (AVR), in patients with aortic stenosis, is well-documented as an important prognostic factor. With this systematic review and meta-analysis, we aimed to characterize the response of the unloaded LV after AVR. We searched on MEDLINE/PubMed and Web of Science for studies reporting echocardiographic findings before and at least 1 month after AVR for the treatment of aortic stenosis. In total, 1,836 studies were identified and 1,098 were screened for inclusion. The main factors of interest were structural and dynamic measures of the LV and aortic valve. We performed a random-effects meta-analysis to compute standardized mean differences (SMD) between follow-up and baseline values for each outcome. Twenty-seven studies met the eligibility criteria, yielding 11,751 patients. AVR resulted in reduced mean aortic gradient (SMD: −38.23 mmHg, 95% CI: −39.88 to −36.58, I2=92%), LV mass (SMD: −37.24 g, 95% CI: −49.31 to −25.18, I2=96%), end-diastolic LV diameter (SMD: −1.78 mm, 95% CI: −2.80 to −0.76, I2=96%), end-diastolic LV volume (SMD: −1.6 ml, 95% CI: −6.68 to 3.51, I2=91%), increased effective aortic valve area (SMD: 1.10 cm2, 95% CI: 1.01 to 1.20, I2=98%), and LV ejection fraction (SMD: 2.35%, 95% CI: 1.31 to 3.40%, I2=94.1%). Our results characterize the extent to which reverse remodeling is expected to occur after AVR. Notably, in our study, reverse remodeling was documented as soon as 1 month after AVR.

Abstract The single-layered ruthenate Sr2RuO4 is one of the most enigmatic unconventional superconductors. While for many years it was thought to be the best candidate for a chiral p-wave superconducting ground state, desirable for topological quantum computations, recent experiments suggest a singlet state, ruling out the original p-wave scenario. The superconductivity as well as the properties of the multi-layered compounds of the ruthenate perovskites are strongly influenced by a van Hove singularity in proximity of the Fermi energy. Tiny structural distortions move the van Hove singularity across the Fermi energy with dramatic consequences for the physical properties. Here, we determine the electronic structure of the van Hove singularity in the surface layer of Sr2RuO4 by quasi-particle interference imaging. We trace its dispersion and demonstrate from a model calculation accounting for the full vacuum overlap of the wave functions that its detection is facilitated through the octahedral rotations in the surface layer.

The androgens/androgen receptor (AR) axis is the main therapeutic target in prostate cancer (PCa). However, while initially responsive, a subset of tumors loses AR expression through mechanisms putatively associated with epigenetic modifications. In this study, we assessed the link between the presence of CpG methylation in the 5′UTR and promoter regions of AR and loss of AR expression. Hence, we characterized and compared the methylation signature at CpG resolution of these regulatory regions in vitro, both at basal levels and following treatment with 5-aza-2-deoxycytidine (DAC) alone, or in combination with Trichostatin A (TSA). Our results showed heterogeneity in the methylation signature of AR negative cell lines and pinpointed the proximal promoter region as the most consistently methylated site in DU-145. Furthermore, this region was extremely resistant to the demethylating effects of DAC and was only significantly demethylated upon concomitant treatment with TSA. Nevertheless, no AR re-expression was detected at the mRNA or protein level. Importantly, after treatment, there was a significant increase in repressive histone marks at AR region 1 in DU-145 cells. Altogether, our data indicate that AR region 1 genomic availability is crucial for AR expression and that the inhibition of histone methyltransferases might hold promise for AR re-expression.

Quasiparticle interference is a powerful tool for characterization of electronic structure which leverages scattering off defects; however, it is limited to quasi two-dimensional materials. Here, the authors demonstrate a method for reconstructing electronic structure of three-dimensional materials from quasiparticle interference data.

Abstract Background The WHO identified the importance of macro-socioeconomic determinants and political context as interlinked key factors affecting healthcare quality and health equity. As a response to the recent economic and financial crisis, Portugal approved in 2011 the Economic Adjustment Programme (EAP) to obtain financial assistance from the Troika in order to reduce public debt. This study aims to analyse the impact of the economic crisis and the EAP on perinatal healthcare quality for very preterm (VPT) and/or very low birth weight (VLBW) infants, as perceived by healthcare professionals and experts, within the health administrative regions of the two major metropolitan areas in Portugal. Methods A qualitative approach was applied to receive an in-depth understanding and accomplish perspective variability. A purposive sampling technique was used. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with twenty-one healthcare professionals and experts between October 2018–July 2019. Inductive thematic analysis was performed which encompassed a five-step categorization procedure. Data analysis was undertaken by utilizing Nvivo2011 software. Evolved themes were then associated with WHO’s Quality Standards on Maternal and New-born Care. A framework on the impact of macro-socioeconomic determinants on perinatal health care quality was developed. Results Although participants did not perceive the quality of perinatal care had deteriorated, the analysis of their accounts on work experience revealed that it was indeed adversely modified in all WHO Quality Standards. Health care provision was perceived as detrimental in five main areas: 1) Availability of human resources; 2) Functional referral systems; 3) Competent and motivated human resources; 4) Emotional support; and 5) Essential physical resources available. Policy reforms by the EAP resulted in reduced timeliness of care, increased waiting times, cuts in sequence and duration of consultations, and deficiencies in follow-up care for VPT/VLBW infants and their mothers. The EAP directly influenced working environment of healthcare professionals by causing stress, burnout, work absence, and brain drain. Conclusion An interrelation between macro-socioeconomic determinants and perinatal health care quality was disclosed. The economic crisis and EAP have adversely modified equitable perinatal health care quality for VPT/VLBW infants and their mothers. Our findings underlined the negative impact of austerity policies on vulnerable populations.

Abstract Background Retention of participants in cohort studies is a major challenge. A better understanding of all elements involved in participation and attrition phenomena in particular settings is needed to develop effective retention strategies. The study aimed to achieve an in-depth understanding of participant retention in longitudinal cohorts focusing on participants’ and researcher’s perspectives, across three diverse socio-geographic and cultural settings. Methods This study used a triangulation of multi-situated methods to collect data on cohort studies of children born with less than 32 weeks of gestation in Denmark, Italy and Portugal. It included focus groups and individual semi-driven interviewing with involved key actors (i.e. parents, staff, healthcare professionals, researchers) and a collaborative visual methodology. A purposive sample of 48 key actors (n = 13 in Denmark; n = 13 in Italy; n = 22 in Portugal) was collected. A triangulation of phenomenological thematic analysis with discourse analysis was applied. Cross-contextual and context-specific situational elements involved in participation and attrition phenomena in these child cohorts were identified at various levels and stages. Results Main findings included: situational challenges affecting potential and range of possibilities for implementation strategies (geopolitical environment, societal changes, research funding models); situational elements related to particular strategies acting as deterrents (postal questionnaires) and facilitators (multiple flexible strategies, reminders, regular interaction); main motivations to enrol and participate (altruism/solidarity and gratitude/sense of duty to reciprocate); main motivational deterrents to participate to follow-up waves (lack of bonding, insufficient feedback); entanglement of clinical and research follow-up as facilitator and deterrent. Conclusions The multi-situated approach used, addressing the interplay of the lived experience of individuals, was of most value to understand participation variability under different implemented strategies in-context. Cross-contextual and context-specific situational elements that have been influential factors towards participation and attrition in the cohorts were identified.

Abstract Analysis of the structure, diversity, and demographic dynamics of tree assemblages in tropical forests is especially important in order to evaluate local and regional successional trajectories. We conducted a long‐term study to investigate how the structure, species richness, and diversity of secondary tropical forests change over time. Trees (DBH ≥ 5 cm) in the Atlantic Forest of southern Brazil were sampled twice during a 10‐year period (2007 and 2017) in six stands (1 ha each) that varied in age from their last disturbance (25, 60, 75, 90, and more than 100 years). We compared forest structure (abundance and basal area), species richness, alpha diversity, demographic rates (mortality, recruitment, and loss or gain in basal area), species composition, spatial beta diversity, and temporal beta diversity (based on turnover and nestedness indices) among stand ages and study years. Demographic rates recorded in a 10‐year interval indicate a rapid and dynamic process of species substitution and structural changes. Structural recovery occurred faster than beta diversity and species composition recovery. The successional gradient showed a pattern of species trade‐off over time, with less spatial dissimilarity and faster demographic rates in younger stands. As stands grow older, they show larger spatial turnover of species than younger stands, making them more stochastic in relation to species composition. Stands appear to split chronologically to some extent, but not across a straightforward linear axis, reflecting stochastic changes, providing evidence for the formation of a nonequilibrium community. Policy implications. These results reiterate the complexity and variability in forest succession and serve as a reference for the evaluation and monitoring of local management and conservation actions and for defining regional strategies that consider the diversity of local successional trajectories to evaluate the effectiveness of restoration measures in secondary forests of the Atlantic Forest biome.

Absolute growth rates change with tree size and age, shifting throughout species ontogeny. The study on interspecific variation in plant traits has generated important insights into the life-history strategies and their consequences for ecosystem functioning. However, it remains unknown to what extent – and even if – species’ functional traits are related to the variation in their growth trajectories. We set out to model growth trajectories of 45 woody species from the Brazilian Atlantic Forest in a secondary subtropical forest under regeneration, aiming to understand if species can be grouped by their growth patterns throughout ontogeny and if these groups could be classified in distinct ecological strategies based on key plant traits. We used a maximum likelihood estimation approach to predict growth trajectories using three ecologically relevant parameters [maximum growth rate (Gmax), diameter at maximum growth rate (Dopt), and the ontogenetic variability in growth rate (K)] followed by multivariate analyses to detect associations among phylogenetic relationships, plant traits, and growth parameters and classify species into growth pattern groups. Across species, growth trajectory parameters varied widely. The cluster analysis identified three distinct groups based on growth trajectories parameters, which were not functionally or ecologically well defined. Our findings supports the idea that traits describing plant size and tree shape, such as maximum height, canopy volume and height to diameter ratio, were generally the best predictors of species growth parameters throughout ontogeny, even though traits representing resource-use and reproductive strategies also played a significant role. Growth-trait framework can be understood as a continuum of multi-trait combinations where, at one end of the gradient, we find trees with higher growth rate and larger diameters supporting a voluminous canopy combined with lower investment in leaf tissue and smaller diaspore; at the other end, taller trees supporting a smaller canopy with higher investment in leaf tissue and longer diaspore. Ultimately, we have shown that tree architecture, leaf and reproductive traits significantly influence growth trajectory along tree ontogeny, which may be the reason why objectively grouping species based on growth-trajectories parameters is ineffective, at least in highly diverse secondary subtropical forests undergoing regeneration.

To reverse the effects of deforestation, tropical areas have expanded restoration efforts in recent years. As ecological restoration positively affects the structure and function of degraded ecosystems, understanding to what extent restoration recovers ecosystem services (ES) is an important step in directing large-scale restoration actions. We evaluated the effect of restoration in increasing the provision of ES in tropical forests. We performed a global meta-analysis of ecological indicators of the ES provided in restored areas, degraded areas and reference ecosystems. We tested for the effects of different restoration strategies, different types of degradation and for the effects of restoration over time. Overall, restoration actions contributed to a significant increase in levels of ecological indicators of ES (carbon pool, soil attributes and biodiversity protection) compared to disturbed areas. Among the restoration strategies, the natural regeneration was the most effective. Biodiversity protection and carbon recovered better than soil attributes. All other restoration strategies recovered ES to a substantially lesser degree, and reforestation with exotics decreased the ES of areas degraded by agriculture. In areas degraded by pasture, restoration was more effective in recovering the biodiversity protection, whereas in areas degraded by agriculture, the restoration recovered mainly the carbon pool. Our results show that by choosing the correct strategy, restoration can recover much of the ES lost by the degradation of tropical forests. These results should be considered for large-scale conservation and management efforts for this biome.

Ocotea porosa (Ness) Barroso (Lauraceae), a typical tree of the southern Atlantic Forest in Brazil, was heavily exploited for timber in the last century. With the aim of examining the status of the remaining populations, we surveyed five forest fragments in the state of Paraná, in southern Brazil, and evaluated whether disturbances caused by selective logging and fragmentation were related to population structure of O. porosa. We assessed demographic aspects related to tree density, size hierarchy and individual allometry, correlating those parameters with fragment structure variables (fragment size, isolation and logging level). We found that, although all populations occurred in low densities (60-440 individuals ha−¹), the number of adults was significantly lower in the smaller and most disturbed fragments (13 and 35 individuals ha−¹, respectively). We did not detect changes in allometric relationships among individuals in the five populations studied. However, we found that populations in more heavily disturbed areas presented lower size hierarchy (i.e., less dominance of larger trees) than did those in undisturbed areas, suggesting that selective logging affects the population structure of O. porosa, possibly affecting the rates of reproduction and fecundity, which may ultimately increase the probability of local extinction.

Wetlands harbor an important compliment of regional plant diversity, but in many regions data on wetland diversity and composition is still lacking, thus hindering our understanding of the processes that control it. While patterns of broad-scale terrestrial diversity and composition typically correlate with contemporary climate it is not clear to what extent patterns in wetlands are complimentary, or conflicting. To elucidate this, we consolidate data from wetland forest inventories in Brazil and examine patterns of diversity and composition along temperature and rainfall gradients spanning five biomes. We collated 196 floristic inventories covering an area >220 ha and including >260,000 woody individuals. We detected a total of 2,453 tree species, with the Amazon alone accounting for nearly half. Compositional patterns indicated differences in freshwater wetland floras among Brazilian biomes, although biomes with drier, more seasonal climates tended to have a larger proportion of more widely distributed species. Maximal alpha diversity increased with annual temperature, rainfall, and decreasing seasonality, patterns broadly consistent with upland vegetation communities. However, alpha diversity-climate relationships were only revealed at higher diversity values associated with the uppermost quantiles, and in most sites diversity varied irrespective of climate. Likewise, mean biome-level differences in alpha-diversity were unexpectedly modest, even in comparisons of savanna-area wetlands to those of nearby forested regions. We describe attenuated wetland climate-diversity relationships as a shifting balance of local and regional effects on species recruitment. Locally, excessive waterlogging strongly filters species able to colonize from regional pools. On the other hand, increased water availability can accommodate a rich community of drought-sensitive immigrant species that are able to track buffered wetland microclimates. We argue that environmental conditions in many wetlands are not homogeneous with respect to regional climate, and that responses of wetland tree communities to future climate change may lag behind that of non-wetland, terrestrial habitat.

Animal-plant interactions are important for the recovery of diversity and processes in secondary forests, which increasingly dominate the tropical landscape. We used a combination of observational and experimental approaches to study the interactions of ants with diaspores across a successional gradient of forests in Southern Brazil, from August 2007 to April 2008. In addition to diaspore removal rates, we assessed the species richness, diversity and behaviour of ants interacting with diaspores, in three replicated sites of four successional stages of forests. We recorded 22 ant species interacting with diaspores (an estimated 15% of the total species pool in the region). Species richness and diversity did not differ among successional stages but the behaviour of ants towards diaspores changed with the age of secondary forests. In old successional stages the removal of entire diaspores was more common than in young successional stages of forests. Concordantly, diaspore removal rates were lowest in the youngest successional stage of secondary forests and increased with the age of forests. These results indicate that ant-diaspore interactions in secondary forests are disturbed and lower removal rates in secondary forests are likely to constrain the recruitment of plant populations during secondary succession. A saturação hídrica do solo e a conseqüente diminuição na quantidade de oxigênio disponível para o sistema radicular selecionaram, ao longo do processo evolutivo, plantas capazes de sobreviverem à inundação sazonal ou permanente. Nas espécies neotropicais as adaptações que permitem suportar este estresse são bastante diversificadas. Neste trabalho foram estudados a germinação das sementes e o crescimento inicial das plantas de Calophyllum brasiliense, em condições de hipoxia. As sementes de C brasiliense não são fotoblásticas, sobrevivem ao menos três meses submersas, mas germinam apenas em solo bem drenado. A inundação não inibe o crescimento da planta. Não houve mudanças morfológicas na parte aérea das plantas, mas a substituição das raízes formadas no período pré-inundação por um sistema radicular eficiente talvez seja o principal motivo que permita o crescimento normal das plantas em áreas inundadas. Ao contrário de algumas espécies de locais sujeitos ao alagamento, cujas plantas têm o crescimento inibido pelo estresse, o ciclo de vida de C brasiliense está adaptado à inundação temporária ou permanente. A diversificação da forma de dispersão, a indiferença em relação à luz e a capacidade de sobreviver e crescer em solo inundado são características que contribuem para a ampla distribuição geográfica da espécie, sempre associada a áreas alagáveis.Soil waterlogging and the subsequent reduction in the amount of oxygen available for the respiration of the root system selected, along the evolutive process, plants able to thrive in seasonally or permanently flooded areas. In neotropical plants there are many types of adaptations to flooding. In this paper we present the results of the work carried out with seeds and seedlings of C brasiliense subjected to hypoxia during germination and early development. C brasiliense seeds are not photoblastic and survive up to three months burried in a water saturated substrate, but germination only takes place in well-drained soils. Soil waterlogging does not inhibit seedling growth and there are no apparent morphological changes of the aerial part of flooded plants. New and aerated roots that make plant survival possible replace old and spoiled roots. In contrast to many typical species of flood-prone areas where growth is inhibited by oxygen stress. C. brasiliense seedlings seem to be well adapted to their waterlogged environment. Seed dispersion, the absence of photoblastic response as well as seed and seedling capacity of surviving and growing in waterlogged soils contribute to the wide geographic distribution of C. brasiliense always associated with areas subjected to soil waterlogging.

Utilizou-se a associação de cloridrato de tiletamina (125mg) e cloridrato de zolazepam (125mg) diluídos em água destilada (10ml) como tranqüilizante e anestésico em 38 animais pertencentes às espécies Saguinus imperator imperator (N= 21), Saguinus fuscicollis weddeli (N= 15) e Cebuella pygmea (N=2). Indivíduos de ambos os sexos, com pesos entre 130 e 520g, receberam doses de 0,02ml (1,11mg/kg) a 0,15ml (8,33mg/kg) pela via intramuscular. Na maioria dos casos ocorreu anestesia. Os animais foram libertados no mesmo dia da captura, após recuperação pós-anestésica. Não ocorreu efeito colateral aparente sobre os fetos de duas fêmeas gestantes. Apesar da morte de um animal jovem, os resultados foram considerados satisfatórios na tranqüilização e anestesia de calitriquídeos.Tiletamine hydrochloride (125mg) in association with zolazepam hydrochloride (125mg) diluted in distilled water (10ml) were used as tranquilizer and anesthetic in 38 individuals of three species of callitrichids: 21 black-chinned emperor tamarins (Saguinus imperator imperator), 15 saddleback tamarins (Saguinus fuscicollis weddeli) and 2 pygmy marmosets (Cebuella pygmea). Individuals of both sexes that had weighed between 130g and 520g received doses of 0.02ml (1.11mg/kg) to 0.15ml (8.33mg/kg). In most of the cases anesthesia occurred. Marmosets were liberated in the same day of the capture, after we had verified the animal’s rehabilitation. Side effects were not apparent in the fetus of the two pregnant females. Despite the death of an young individual, the results were considered satisfactory to produce tranquillity and anesthesia in callitrichids

INTRODUÇÃO: A ocorrência de leishmaniose tegumentar americana na região do Vale do Paraíba e litoral Norte do Estado de São Paulo foi estudada por meio de sensoriamento remoto orbital e de mapas da região. MÉTODO: As áreas consideradas de risco foram localizadas numa composição de imagens das bandas TM-3,4 e 5 do satélite Landsat, a vegetação arbustiva foi identificada e se procuraram correlações entre aquelas áreas e as características ambientais relevantes e suas mudanças. RESULTADOS: Foi caracterizada uma área de risco que pode se provar um macro habitat para vetores, reservatórios e agentes etiológicos. A busca de mudanças na paisagem e a avaliação dos dados meteorológicos não forneceram nenhum incremento dos possíveis fatores de risco. CONCLUSÕES: Existe plena correlação entre as áreas consideradas de risco e a presença de córregos e vegetação arbustiva.

Este trabalho tem como objetivo relatar a experiência de articulação entre o Programa de Medidas Socioeducativas em Meio Aberto de São Carlos e a Diretoria Regional e a rede de ensino deste município, para a inserção e permanência dos adolescentes em cumprimento de medida socioeducativa em meio aberto na escola. A partir da problemática de inserção do adolescente autor de ato infracional neste espaço, bem como o alto número de evasões e desistências, um profissional específico passou a integrar a equipe do Programa a fim de qualificar a relação com a rede de ensino e, através do trabalho conjunto, garantir estratégias de inserção e permanência destes adolescentes. A articulação se fez principalmente junto ao professor mediador escolar e comunitário e dessa forma, 80% dos adolescentes em cumprimento de medida atualmente, permaneceram na escola. Este dado ilustra a importância do trabalho em rede para a efetivação da garantia de direitos dos adolescentes, em especial, daquele que cometeu ato infracional.
