The nucleus $^{180}$Hf is one of the most primary of examples of an axially symmetric prolate rotor. Combined with the presence of high-$K$ isomers, spectroscopic studies can provide important information on the nature of its single-particle levels. Precise measurements are essential for constraining nuclear models and interpreting the nature of such isomeric states. In this work, the nucleus $^{180}$Hf was populated using the proton pick-up reaction $^{181}$Ta($^{11}$B,$^{12}$C)$^{180}$Hf at beam energy of 47 MeV at Horia Hulubei National Institute of Nuclear Physics and Engineering (IFIN-HH). The spin of the 1374 keV state and the mixing ratio of the $1066$ keV transition have been measured, the latter with an increased precision compared to the previous value from literature. The presently measured spin of the 1374 keV state, currently assigned a tentative value of $(4^-_1)$, favors one of the two different values reported in the literature. The particular state constitutes the band-head of a rotational band in $^{180}$Hf. The measured multipolarity mixing ratio of the inter-band transition $1374 \rightarrow 309$ keV can provide important information for the testing and constraining of theoretical nuclear models used for the study of the intrinsic properties of $^{180}$Hf as well as its neighboring isotopes.

Rationale: Many treatments have been proposed for cosmetic or functional improvement of scars. It is known that fat grafts and laser treatment can have beneficial effects on the remodeling of scar tissue, and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) can be effective during the wound-healing process. We hypothesized that laser and PRP can enhance fat graft survival and the combination would be effective in improving scars appearance. Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of these combinations in the treatment of atrophic and contractile scars. Methods and Results: From 2008-2013, we treated with this combination 64 patients affected by atrophic and contractile scars involving different body parts. At 6 months the patients’ overall satisfaction rate was excellent for over 50% of the patients. Discussion: The association of an ablative laser CO2 with PRP and autologous fat graft seems to be a promising and effective therapeutic approach for atrophic and contractile scars. The record of volcanic forcing of climate over the past 2500 years is based primarily on sulfate concentrations in ice cores. Of particular interest are large volcanic eruptions with plumes that reached high altitudes in the stratosphere, as these afford sulfate aerosols the longest residence time in the atmosphere, and thus have the greatest impact on radiative forcing. Sulfur isotopes measured in ice cores can be used to identify these large eruptions because stratospheric sulfur is exposed to UV radiation, which imparts a time-evolving mass independent fractionation (MIF) that is preserved in the ice. However, sample size requirements of traditional measurement techniques mean that the MIF signal may be obscured, leading to an inconclusive result. Here we present a new method of measuring sulfur isotopes in ice cores by multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, which reduces sample size requirements by three orders of magnitude. Our method allows us to measure samples containing as little as 10 nmol of sulfur, with a precision of 0.11‰ for δ34S and 0.10‰ for Δ33S, enabling a high-temporal resolution over ice core sulfate peaks. We tested this method on known tropical (Tambora 1815 and Samalas 1257) and extra-tropical (Katmai/Novarupta 1912) stratospheric eruptions from the Tunu2013 ice core in Greenland and the B40 ice core from Antarctica. These high-resolution sulfur isotope records suggest a distinct difference between the signatures of tropical versus extra-tropical eruptions. Furthermore, isotope mass balance on sulfate from extra-tropical eruptions provides a means to estimate the fraction of sulfate deposited that was derived from the stratosphere. This technique applied to unidentified eruptions in ice cores may thus improve the record of explosive volcanism and its forcing of climate. Postprint
