The outbreak of COVID-19 was a major disruption to higher education and marketing education across the globe. COVID-19 impacted not only our campuses, but also how we teach and our students. As marketing academicians, we must respond to the educational risk posed to COVID-19 to facilitate educational success in the future. We conducted an exploratory survey of 118 marketing department chairs in the U.S. representing all regions of the country in August and September of 2020. The survey data provides valuable insights into how marketing department chairs perceive educational risk and challenges under COVID-19 and how they established coping strategies, to mitigate risk including internal efforts, benchmarking, communications, and the implementation of technological/instructional support. We then examine the effects of COVID-19 on the adjustment of teaching plans for Fall 2020, marketing course content, and job placement. Finally, we explore how to improve satisfaction with the risk management process while setting best practices to move forward under COVID-19. We found that overall the satisfaction with the COVID-19 management process was high, communicating about COVID-19 on the institution's website increased perceived educational risk, and the departments that benchmarked produced higher satisfaction with the process rankings by faculty.

Excessive melanogenesis leads to hyperpigmentation-related cosmetic problems. UV exposure increases oxidative stress, which promotes melanogenesis-related signal pathways such as the PKA, microphthalmia-associated transcription factor (MITF), tyrosinase (TYR), tyrosinase-related protein-1 (TRP1), and tyrosinase-related protein-2 (TRP2) pathways. Glycine is a source of endogenous antioxidants, including glutathione. Fermented fish collagen (FC) contains glycine; thus, we evaluated the effect of FC on decreasing melanogenesis via decreasing oxidative stress. The glycine receptor (GlyR) and glycine transporter-1 (GlyT1) levels were decreased in UV-irradiated keratinocytes; however, the expression levels of these proteins increased upon treatment with FC. The FC decreased oxidative stress, as indicated by the decreasing expression of NOX1/2/4, increased expression of GSH/GSSG, increased SOD activity, and decreased 8-OHdG expression in UV-irradiated keratinocytes. Administration of conditioned media from FC-treated keratinocytes to melanocytes led to decreased p38, PKC, MITF, TRP1, and TRP2 expression. These changes induced by the FC were also observed in UV-irradiated animal skin. FC treatment increased the expression of GlyR and GlyT, which was accompanied by decreased oxidative stress in the UV-irradiated skin. Moreover, the FC negatively regulated the melanogenesis signaling pathways, leading to decreased melanin content in the UV-irradiated skin. In conclusion, FC decreased UV-induced oxidative stress and melanogenesis in melanocytes and animal skin. FC could be used in the treatment of UV-induced hyperpigmentation problems. Decreased medial cheek fat volume during aging leads to loss of a youthful facial shape. Increasing facial volume by methods such as adipose-derived stem cell (ASC) injection can produce facial rejuvenation. High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) can increase adipogenesis in subcutaneous fat by modulating cilia on ASCs, which is accompanied by increased HSP70 and decreased NF-κB expression. Thus, we evaluated the effect of HIFU on increasing facial adipogenesis in swine (n = 2) via modulation of ASC cilia. Expression of CD166, an ASC marker, differed by subcutaneous adipose tissue location. CD166 expression in the zygomatic arch (ZA) was significantly higher than that in the subcutaneous adipose tissue in the mandible or lateral temporal areas. HIFU was applied only on the right side of the face, which was compared with the left side, where HIFU was not applied, as a control. HIFU produced a significant increase in HSP70 expression, decreased expression of NF-κB and a cilia disassembly factor (AURKA), and increased expression of a cilia increasing factor (ARL13B) and PPARG and CEBPA, which are the main regulators of adipogenesis. All of these changes were most prominent at the ZA. Facial adipose tissue thickness was also increased by HIFU. Adipose tissue volume, evaluated by magnetic resonance imaging, was increased by HIFU, most prominently in the ZA. In conclusion, HIFU increased ASC marker expression, accompanied by increased HSP70 and decreased NF-κB expression. Additionally, changes in cilia disassembly and length and expression of adipogenesis were observed. These results suggest that HIFU could be used to increase facial volume by modulating adipogenesis. Poly L-lactic acid (PLLA) fillers stimulate collagen synthesis by activating various immune cells and fibroblasts. Piezo1, an ion channel, responds to mechanical stimuli, including changes in extracellular matrix stiffness, by mediating Ca2+ influx. Given that elevated intracellular Ca2+ levels trigger signaling pathways associated with fibroblast proliferation, Piezo1 is a pivotal regulator of collagen synthesis and tissue fibrosis. The aim of the present study was to investigate the impact of PLLA on dermal collagen synthesis by activating Piezo1 in both an H2O2-induced cellular senescence model in vitro and aged animal skin in vivo. PLLA elevated intracellular Ca2+ levels in senescent fibroblasts, which was attenuated by the Piezo1 inhibitor GsMTx4. Furthermore, PLLA treatment increased the expression of phosphorylated ERK1/2 to total ERK1/2 (pERK1/2/ERK1/2) and phosphorylated AKT to total AKT (pAKT/AKT), indicating enhanced pathway activation. This was accompanied by upregulation of cell cycle-regulating proteins (CDK4 and cyclin D1), promoting the proliferation of senescent fibroblasts. Additionally, PLLA promoted the expression of phosphorylated mTOR/S6K1/4EBP1, TGF-β, and Collagen I/III in senescent fibroblasts, with GsMTx4 treatment mitigating these effects. In aged skin, PLLA treatment similarly upregulated the expression of pERK1/2/ERK1/2, pAKT/AKT, CDK4, cyclin D1, mTOR/S6K1/4EBP1, TGF-β, and Collagen I/III. In summary, our findings suggest Piezo1′s involvement in PLLA-induced collagen synthesis, mediated by heightened activation of cell proliferation signaling pathways such as pERK1/2/ERK1/2, pAKT/AKT, and phosphorylated mTOR/S6K1/4EBP1, underscoring the therapeutic potential of PLLA in tissue regeneration. This study explores the complex interplay of internal and external factors driving the likelihood of product recalls for an organization. Initially, it examines the impact of innovation capability on product recall likelihood. Contrary to the prevailing wisdom, it posits a U-shaped relationship, suggesting that while heightened innovation capability generally benefits firms, it can lead to detrimental management challenges beyond a certain threshold. Furthermore, this research examines how firms handle product recalls in fiercely competitive industries. Recognizing the significance of external factors, this study asserts that industry competition amplifies the likelihood of product recalls. However, an intriguing twist emerges when the competition reaches an extreme level; the likelihood of product recalls diminishes, forming an inverted U-shaped pattern. In essence, this study empirically tests these theoretical constructs, shedding light on the complex dynamics governing the likelihood of product recalls for an organization, considering both an internal force and an external one. The dermal–epidermal junction (DEJ) is essential for maintaining skin structural integrity and regulating cell survival and proliferation. Thus, DEJ rejuvenation is key for skin revitalization, particularly in age-related DEJ deterioration. Radiofrequency (RF) treatment, known for its ability to enhance collagen fiber production through thermal mechanisms and increase heat shock protein (HSP) expression, has emerged as a promising method for skin rejuvenation. Additionally, RF activates Piezo1, an ion channel implicated in macrophage polarization toward an M2 phenotype and enhanced TGF-β production. This study investigated the impact of RF treatment on HSP47 and HSP90 expression, known stimulators of DEJ protein expression. Furthermore, using in vitro and aged animal skin models, we assessed whether RF-induced Piezo1 activation and the subsequent M2 polarization could counter age-related DEJ changes. The RF treatment of H2O2-induced senescent keratinocytes upregulated the expression of HSP47, HSP90, TGF-β, and DEJ proteins, including collagen XVII. Similarly, the RF treatment of senescent macrophages increased Piezo1 and CD206 (M2 marker) expression. Conditioned media from RF-treated senescent macrophages enhanced the expression of TGF-β and DEJ proteins, such as nidogen and collagen IV, in senescent fibroblasts. In aged animal skin, RF treatment increased the expression of HSP47, HSP90, Piezo1, markers associated with M2 polarization, IL-10, and TGF-β. Additionally, RF treatment enhanced DEJ protein expression. Moreover, RF reduced lamina densa replication, disrupted lesions, promoted hemidesmosome formation, and increased epidermal thickness. Hyperpigmentation due to ultraviolet (UV)-induced melanogenesis causes various esthetic problems. Phlorotannin (PT) and extracellular vesicles (EVs) derived from various plants suppress melanogenesis pathways. We used UV-exposed keratinocytes and animal skin to determine if co-treatment with PT and EVs from Ecklonia cava (EVE) could inhibit melanogenesis by reducing UV-induced oxidative stress and the expression of the thioredoxin-interacting protein (TXNIP)/nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain-like receptor family pyrin domain containing the 3 (NLRP3)/interleukin-18 (IL-18) pathway, which are upstream signals of the microphthalmia-associated transcription factor. UV exposure increased oxidative stress in keratinocytes and animal skin, as evaluated by 8-OHdG expression, and this effect was reduced by co-treatment with PT and EVE. UV also increased binding between NLRP3 and TXNIP, which increased NLRP3 inflammasome activation and IL-18 secretion, and this effect was reduced by co-treatment with PT and EVE in keratinocytes and animal skin. In melanocytes, conditioned media (CM) from UV-exposed keratinocytes increased the expression of melanogenesis-related pathways; however, these effects were reduced with CM from UV-exposed keratinocytes treated with PT and EVE. Similarly, PT and EVE treatment reduced melanogenesis-related signals, melanin content, and increased basement membrane (BM) components in UV-exposed animal skin. Thus, co-treatment with PT and EVE reduced melanogenesis and restored the BM structure by reducing oxidative stress and TXNIP/NLRP3/IL-18 pathway expression. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Pulse oximetry is a non-invasive method for measuring blood oxygen saturation. However, its detection scheme heavily relies on single-point measurements. If the oxygen saturation is measured at a single location, the measurements are influenced by the profile of illumination, spatial variations in blood flow, and skin pigment. To overcome these issues, imaging systems that measure the distribution of oxygen saturation have been demonstrated. However, previous imaging systems have relied on red and near-infrared illuminations with different profiles, resulting in inconsistent ratios between transmitted red and near-infrared light over space. Such inconsistent ratios can introduce fundamental errors when calculating the spatial distribution of oxygen saturation. In this study, we developed a novel illumination system specifically designed for a pulse oximetry imaging system. For the illumination system, we customized the integrating sphere by coating a mixture of barium sulfate and white paint inside it and by coupling eight red and eight near-infrared LEDs. The illumination system created identical patterns of red and near-infrared illuminations that were spatially uniform. This allowed the ratio between transmitted red and near-infrared light to be consistent over space, enabling the calculation of the spatial distribution of oxygen saturation. We believe our developed pulse oximetry imaging system can be used to obtain spatial information on blood oxygen saturation that provides insight into the oxygenation of the blood contained within the peripheral region of the tissue. As the pitch size of Cu lines in the back-end-of-line (BEOL) is decreased below a few tens of nanometers, resistivity exponentially increases and electromigration (EM) causes device failure. Graphene has shown promise for both problems, but graphene grown at 400 °C for the BEOL-compatible process is far from its ideal honeycomb lattice. In this report, we successfully demonstrated that graphene grown at low temperatures improves Cu resistance by 5% and increased the EM lifetime by 78 times compared to Cu-only interconnect. We proved that the resistivity gain by graphene capping is due to the improvement of the Cu surface, excluding other effects of parallel resistivity and grain boundary scattering. First-principles calculation demonstrated that the graphene edge–Cu bond can inhibit the migration of Cu vacancies, thereby improving the EM lifetime. We manipulated the graphene nanostructure to have more edge contact with Cu, which enhanced the EM lifetime by 116 times compared to Cu-only interconnect. This work systematically investigated the causes for the decrease in resistance of graphene-capped Cu and discovered key factors that contribute the improvement of the interconnect reliability. Hyperpigmentation stimulated by ultraviolet (UV)-induced melanin overproduction causes various cosmetic problems. UV radiation's activation of the cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP)-mediated cAMP-dependent protein kinase (PKA)/cAMP response element-binding protein (CREB)/microphthalmia-associated transcription factor (MITF) pathway is the main pathway for melanogenesis. However, the secretion of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) from keratinocytes due to UV radiation also leads to melanogenesis. Adenosine, converted from ATP by CD39 and CD73, can activate adenylate cyclase (AC) activity and increase intracellular cAMP expression. cAMP-mediated PKA activation results in dynamic mitochondrial changes that affect melanogenesis via ERK. We evaluated whether radiofrequency (RF) irradiation could decrease ATP release from keratinocytes and suppress the expression of CD39, CD73, and A2A/A2B adenosine receptors (ARs) and the activity of AC and downregulate the PKA/CREB/MITF pathway, which would eventually decrease melanogenesis in vitro in UV-irradiated cells and animal skin. Our results indicate that RF decreased ATP release from UVB-irradiated keratinocytes. When conditioned media (CM) from UVB-irradiated keratinocytes (CM-UVB) were administered to melanocytes, the expressions of CD39, CD73, A2A/A2BARs, cAMP, and PKA increased. However, the expression of these factors decreased when CM from UVB and RF-irradiated keratinocytes (CM-UVB/RF) was administered to melanocytes. The phosphorylation of DRP1 at Ser637, which inhibits mitochondrial fission, increased in UVB-irradiated animal skin and was decreased by RF irradiation. The expression of ERK1/2, which can degrade MITF, was increased using RF treatment in UVB-irradiated animal skin. Tyrosinase activity and melanin levels in melanocytes increased following CM-UVB administration, and these increases were reversed after CD39 silencing. Tyrosinase activity and melanin levels in melanocytes were decreased by CM-UVB/RF irradiation. In conclusion, RF irradiation decreased ATP release from keratinocytes and the expressions of CD39, CD73, and A2A/A2BARs, which decreased AC activity in melanocytes. Oxidative stress-induced cellular senescence and mitochondrial dysfunction result in skin aging by increasing ECM levels-degrading proteins such as MMPs, and decreasing collagen synthesis. MMPs also destroy the basement membrane, which is involved in skin elasticity. The extracellular matrix vitalizer RATM (RA) contains various antioxidants and sodium hyaluronate, which lead to skin rejuvenation. We evaluated whether RA decreases oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction, eventually increasing skin elasticity in aged animals. Oxidative stress was assessed by assaying NADPH oxidase activity, which is involved in ROS generation, and the expression of SOD, which removes ROS. NADPH oxidase activity was increased in aged skin and decreased by RA injection. SOD expression was decreased in aged skin and increased by RA injection. Damage to mitochondrial DNA and mitochondrial fusion markers was increased in aged skin and decreased by RA. The levels of mitochondrial biogenesis markers and fission markers were decreased in aged skin and increased by RA. The levels of NF-κB/AP-1 and MMP1/2/3/9 were increased in aged skin and decreased by RA. The levels of TGF-β, CTGF, and collagen I/III were decreased in aged skin and increased by RA. The expression of laminin and nidogen and basement membrane density were decreased in aged skin and increased by RA. RA increased collagen fiber accumulation and elasticity in aged skin. High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) leads to decreased subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) thickness via heat-induced adipocyte necrosis. Heat can induce adipocyte apoptosis and autophagy, and it is known that nuclear or mitochondrial p53 is involved in apoptosis and autophagy. However, whether HIFU leads to apoptosis or autophagy is unclear. We evaluated whether HIFU decreases SAT thickness via p53-related apoptosis or autophagy in high-fat diet (HFD)-fed animals. The expression of nuclear and mitochondrial p53 was increased by HIFU. HIFU also led to decreased expression of BCL2/BCL-xL (an antiapoptotic signal), increased expression of BAX/BAK (an apoptotic signal), increased levels of cleaved caspase 3/9, and increased numbers of apoptotic cells as evaluated by TUNEL assay. Furthermore, HIFU led to increased levels of ATG5, BECN1, and LC3II/LC3I, and decreased levels of p62, a marker of increased autophagy. The thickness of SAT was decreased by HIFU. In conclusion, HIFU led to nuclear and mitochondrial p53 expression, which led to apoptosis and autophagy, and eventually decreased SAT thickness in HFD-fed animals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The emergence of metamaterials has presented an unprecedented platform to control the fundamental properties of light at the nanoscale. Conventional metamaterials, however, possess passive properties that cannot be modulated post-fabrication, limiting their application spectrum. Recent metasurface research has explored a plethora of active control mechanisms to modulate the optical properties of metasurfaces post-fabrication. A key active control mechanism of optical properties involves the use of mechanical deformation, aided by deformable polymeric substrates. The use of deformable polymeric substrates enables dynamic tuning of the optical properties of metasurfaces including metalenses, metaholograms, resonance, and structural colors, which are collectively relevant for biosensing and bioimaging. Deformable–stretchable metasurfaces further enable conformable and flexible optics for wearable applications. To extend deformable–stretchable metasurfaces to biocompatible metasurfaces, a fundamental and comprehensive primer is required. This review covers the underlying principles that govern the highlighted representative metasurface applications, encompassing stretchable metalenses, stretchable metaholograms, tunable structural colors, and tunable plasmonic resonances, while highlighting potential advancements for sensing, imaging, and wearable biomedical applications. Biocompatible optical fibers and waveguides are gaining attention as promising platforms for implantable biophotonic devices. Recently, the distinct properties of silk fibroin were extensively explored because of its unique advantages, including flexibility, process compatibility, long-term biosafety, and controllable biodegradability for in vitro and in vivo biomedical applications. In this study, we developed a novel silk fiber for a sensitive optical sensor based on surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). In contrast to conventional plasmonic nanostructures, which employ expensive and time-consuming fabrication processes, gold nanoparticles were uniformly patterned on the top surface of the fiber employing a simple and cost-effective convective self-assembly technique. The fabricated silk fiber-optic SERS probe presented a good performance in terms of detection limit, sensitivity, and linearity. In particular, the uniform pattern of gold nanoparticles contributed to a highly linear sensing feature compared to the commercial multi-mode fiber sample with an irregular and aggregated distribution of gold nanoparticles. Through further optimization, silk-based fiber-optic probes can function as useful tools for highly sensitive, cost-effective, and easily tailored biophotonic platforms, thereby offering new capabilities for future implantable SERS devices. Because sustainability management plays a vital role in firm performance, it is critical to understand the underlying mechanisms that drive better firm performance with sustainability adoption. Thus, drawing upon responsible leadership theory and the dynamic resource‐based view, this study examines how the level of sustainability adoption influences firm performance, both environmental and financial, emphasizing the role of top management beliefs and participation in sustainability adoption. With responses from 310 employees working in manufacturing, healthcare, and retail industries, the SEM analysis results support that (i) perceived top management's strong beliefs lead to a higher level of sustainability adoption by organizations; (ii) perceived top management's active participation positively moderates the relationship between perceived top management beliefs and the level of sustainability adoption; (iii) the higher level of sustainability adoption results in better environmental and financial performance; and (iv) environmental performance positively and partially mediates the relationship between the level of sustainability adoption and financial firm performance. Finally, we offer guidance to managers who would like to leverage top management attributes to achieve environmental and financial performance via environmental sustainability practices. A transmission-type surface plasmon resonance configuration with dielectric gratings regularly patterned on a silver film was investigated with the aim of enhancing the diffraction efficiency of radiative surface plasmons. The theoretical work was conducted using rigorous coupled-wave analysis in terms of first order diffraction efficiency and conversion efficiency (CE). The results show that pyramid gratings can produce a higher transmittance compared with other grating profiles. Design optimization of the pyramid grating at a wide range of grating thicknesses and periods resulted in a maximum transmittance that was larger than 77% and a peak CE of about 85%. This study demonstrates the potential of using transmitted surface plasmon waves in various optical devices, such as optical biosensors, optical imaging systems, and polarization filters.
