In responding to Adam Rodríguez's paper in this issue, I offer three autobiographical vignettes to depict aspects of my subjective experience of living as a multiracial person. Using his discussion of the multiracial subject as a point of departure, I consider how Asibong, Eng and Han, Stephens, and Mura conceptualize the racialized subject as socialized into carrying the harmful effects of racism for a White hegemonic system that is invested in erasing and forgetting its painful and violent history. I join Rodríguez in thinking about how a psychoanalytic treatment that combines an analysis of the racialized transference and countertransference, along with an exploration of the deleterious effects of the day-to-day racism experienced by the multiracial subject, opens possibilities to metabolize anger and guilt and mitigate the dissociation of aspects of the multiracial self. In this conversation David L. Eng and Shinhee Han sit down with the guest editor of this issue, Mary Kim Brewster, to speak informally about their 25-year collaboration, how they came to write together about the psychic lives of Asian Americans, their observations regarding the mental health and well-being of Asian Americans from their individual perspectives of the clinic and the classroom, and their recent work exploring the racial rage and racial guilt that Asian Americans are socialized to hold for others. Reflecting on the arc of their writing and clinical work Eng and Han speak to how centering the experience of the unthought Asian American subject, in the context of an untaught Asian American history, illuminates the disturbing thought of race at the heart of psychoanalytic theory and practice. In the initial interviews of family therapy sessions, the therapist faces the challenge of obtaining and organizing the information that is most relevant toward understanding the essential concerns that families and couples bring to therapy. This article describes the process of clinical interviewing and case conceptualization used in training family therapists at the Ackerman Institute for the Family. This approach helps the therapist bring forward, and organize, specific information into relational hypotheses, or systemic-relational conceptualizations, that allow both family members and the therapist to understand presenting problems within their relational contexts. While always provisional, relational hypotheses help anchor the therapist in a systemic-relational frame and provide a conceptual through-line to guide the ongoing work of the therapy. The process of interviewing and the construction of clear and complex conceptualizations of presenting problems are illustrated through case examples. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
