Abstract

The strong-interaction shifts and widths of kaonic hydrogen, deuterium, 3He, and 4He were measured in the SIDDHARTA experiment. The most precise values of the shift and width of the kaonic hydrogen 1s state were determined to be ϵ1s = −283 ± 36(stat)±6(syst) eV and Γ1s = 541±89(stat)±22(syst) eV. The upper limit of the kaonic deuterium Kα yield was found to be ≤ 0.39%. In addition, the shifts and widths of the kaonic 3He and 4He 2p states were determined to be ϵ2p(3He) = −2 ± 2(stat) ± 4(syst) eV and Γ2p(3He) = 6 ± 6(stat) ± 7(syst) eV; ϵ2p(4He) = +5 ± 3(stat) ± 4(syst) eV and Γ2p(4He) = 14 ± 8(stat) ± 5(syst) eV. These values are important for the constraints of the low-energy K¯N$\bar KN$ interaction in theoretical approaches.

Abstract

The SIDDHARTA collaboration measured kaonic 3He and 4He 3d → 2p X-rays with gaseous targets at the DAΦNE e+e− collider. The 2p-state strong-interaction shifts and widths were precisely determined by using 144 high-resolution silicon drift detectors. The shift of K−4He is in good agreement with theoretical calculations and consistent with the recent experimental result of KEK-PS E570. The shift of K−3He is also determined for the first time. The newly determined widths are in agreement with optical model calculations.

In this paper we will explore two different proposals for the action for causal sets: the Benincasa–Dowker action [1], and a modified version of the chain action [2]. We propose a variational principle for two-dimensional causal sets and use it for both actions to determine which causal sets at least on average satisfy a discrete version of the Einstein equation. Specifically, we test this method on causal sets embedded in 2d Minkowski, de Sitter, and anti-de Sitter spacetimes and compare the results with those obtained for the most prominent nonmanifoldlike causal sets, the Kleitman–Rothschild causal sets [3]. Sterile neutrinos are a minimal extension of the standard model of particle physics. A promising model-independent way to search for sterile neutrinos is via high-precision β-spectroscopy. The Karlsruhe tritium neutrino (KATRIN) experiment, equipped with a novel multi-pixel silicon drift detector focal plane array and read-out system, named the TRISTAN detector, has the potential to supersede the sensitivity of previous laboratory-based searches. Abstract

One of the major limitations of X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS) experiment at synchrotron facilities is the performance of the detectors. In order to be able to measure more challenging samples and to cope with the very high photon flux of the current and future (diffraction limited) sources, technological developments of detectors are necessary. This article reports on the construction and characterization of a monolithic 19-channel germanium detector demonstrator fitted with CMOS preamplifiers. The detector was characterized in the laboratory with radioactive sources and with the X-ray synchrotron beam. Characteristics such as energy resolution, linearity, counting rate capabilities, and stability of the detector were thoroughly evaluated. In addition, it was proved that by using an advanced pulse processor such as Xspress4, it was possible to improve the performance of the detector system by eliminating the crosstalk among channels and by suppressing the charge-shared events. This work could pave the way to enhanced germanium fluorescence detectors for high-throughput X-ray spectroscopy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The detection module of the ARDESIA spectrometer, an SDD-based, multichannel X-ray detector is presented. The detector design and experimental characterization are discussed. ARDESIA has been optimized for synchrotron radiation applications that require high-rate (>1-Mcps per channel) and high-resolution (better than 200 eV at 6 keV) X-ray detection. The main target applications considered in this development are X-ray fluorescence and X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy, in particular for the DAFNE-Light DXR1 beamline at LNF (Frascati, Italy). This detector is based on a compact unit (16 mm $\times16$ mm) that can be replicated and juxtaposed with several units, thus easily covering different detection configurations. The detector consists of a four-channel monolithic array of SDDs, produced by Fondazione Bruno Kessler (Trento, Italy) connected to a four-channel monolithic CUBE preamplifier mounted on the same carrier. The CUBE preamplifier, compatible with both analog and digital pulse processing, enables reaching high count rates (1-Mcps per channel), while keeping good spectroscopic performances. Abstract

Elemental analysis, and in particular stratigraphic distribution of elements themselves, is a fundamental method to address the composition of materials, but its nature, often invasive, crashes with the necessity of avoiding artefacts' damage when dealing with Cultural Heritage objects. In fact, when work of art are involved, sampling is often forbidden, and transferring an artistic artefact to equipped laboratories is a not negligible issue. The skill to employ in situ non-destructive and non-invasive analytical method is essential. In this scenario, portable X-ray fluorescence (p-XRF) has become one of the most employed techniques due to the development of adaptable and open architecture instruments. In this paper, we show a new data analysis protocol and its application to XRF data acquired from a work by Giotto never studied before: 'God the Father with Angels' (ca. 1330, San Diego Museum of Art). The measurements have been performed in situ during the closing time of the exhibition 'Giotto, l'Italia' (Milano Palazzo Reale - 2 September 2015/10 January 2016). Combining the effectiveness of scanning p-XRF with the responsive of image spectroscopic analysis, we move step by step toward the discovery of Giotto's palette for the flesh tones in God the Father with Angels; our method allows to argue the stratigraphy of the painting without complementary measurements and, at the same time, provides a sequential and smart representation of complex data. Abstract

CRONO is a new portable and easy reconfigurable macro X-ray fluorescence scanner based on the energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence technique, which has been specifically designed for in-situ, fast, and non-invasive elemental mapping of polychrome surfaces. The main components are fully integrated into the detection head which includes an X-ray tube, a large area silicon drift detector, a microscope camera, two pointing lasers, a Helium gas purging set, and fast acquisition electronics. This very compact detection head is mounted on motorized stages (with a linear speed up to 45 mm/s) that allow the scanning of areas up to 450 × 600 mm2. Three collimators (0.5, 1, and 2-mm diameter) are software selectable to obtain different spot sizes on the sample. The typical measurement time for the full scanned area ranges from 1 h with the 2-mm collimator to about 9 h with the 0.5-mm collimator using a dwell time of 30 ms. Technical details and achievable performances of the instrument are presented and discussed along with an example of application which illustrates the value of the developed instrument in the investigation of paintings. Abstract

A new Digital Pulse Processor (DPP), which is developed for radiation detectors especially suitable in applications where high rate and high-resolution spectroscopy are mandatory, is presented. An outstanding feature of the system is the fast peaking time (less than 0.1 usec) that allows processing an Input Count Rate (ICR) of 1Mcps with throughput of about 90% and a 2Mcps ICR with 70% live time, thanks to a high performances pile-up rejection and to the feature of automatic and adaptive filtering. Moreover, the system can synthesize and implement a class of optimum filters with arbitrary noise and constraints, both in time and in frequency domain. The DPP is suitable in spectrometers based on last generation Silicon Drift Detectors (SDD) used in very high count-rates and high-resolution regime.
