Research data management is essential for high-quality reproducible research, yet relatively little is known about how research data management is practiced by graduate students in Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE). Prior research suggests that faculty in CEE delegate research data management to graduate students, prompting this investigation into how graduate students practice data management. This study uses semi-structured interviews and qualitative content analysis to explore how CEE graduate students work with data and practice data management in their research, as well as what resources and support would meet their needs. Many respondents touched on data collection, data management, disseminating research outputs, and collaboration and learning in their interviews. Several themes emerged from the interviews: data quality as a concern, as many CEE graduate students rely on secondary data for research; a gap between values and enacted practices; a connection between disseminating data and reproducibility; and a reliance on peer and self-directed learning for data management education. Based on these themes, the study recommends strategies for librarians and others on campus to better support CEE graduate student research data practices.

Libraries have been supporting instruction on GIS and spatial literacy for some time, but the proliferation of digital and spatial technologies and the increasing number of disciplines interested in using them is changing the demands on libraries. One of these tools is digital storytelling - when combined with maps it can be a powerful way to share research and advocate for change. To tell a good story is human, but to build a story with evidence that is convincing takes practice. This paper discusses our efforts to use storytelling as a base for building spatial literacy and GIS understanding in an academic library context. We present two cases, an event series including informal one-shot workshops, and a half semester course taught at a university, and offer a few suggestions to implement this on your own campus. Accessibility information is necessary to support the everyday mobility of people with disabilities. As a service to aid the mobility of students with disabilities, some universities and colleges provide maps with accessibility information for their campus on the Web. Other maps, while not focused specifically on students, provide information about indoor accessibility and can be extended by users. In this paper, accessibility requirements published in the literature, the criteria used in existing geo-crowdsourcing services and the data used by campus accessibility maps (which are commonly based on the ADA standards) are used to provide an optimal set of requirements for personalized accessibility map (PAM). PAM is discussed and analysed in detail, a prototype PAM developed for the University of Pittsburgh is described, and challenges and future work are highlighted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Bacteria in the human gut exceed the number of cells in our body by a 100-fold. At the level of the gastrointestinal epithelium, a constant battle is fought for equilibrium between the microbiota and the human body. These interactions play a key role in many aspects of host health, influencing energy harvest from food, colonization by pathogens, and the immune system, to name but a few. Unfortunately, the study of this host-microbiota interaction in vivo is limited by the inaccessibility of the digestive tract. Therefore, in vitro technology that focuses on the simulation of this epithelial environment offers an ideal platform with which to conduct mechanistic research that could shed more light on this environment and help explain in vivo observations. However, the limitation of currently available tools could yield results with limited reliability for an in vivo situation. The aim of this mini-review is to focus on the importance of studying the host-microbiota interaction in the gastrointestinal tract and to evaluate the state of the art of the available in vitro techniques. Finally, we aim to identify those missing factors that, if present, would allow the creation of a model that would constitute a better simulation of biofilm formation, i.e. one more closely resembling the in vivo situation. Oxidation products (OPs) formed during ozonation of metoprolol were identified via liquid chromatography and hybride Clq LIT- MS. Experiments carried out at pH 3 and 8 showed the formation of different OPs, depending on pH. The analysis of samples with and without tertiary butanol (t-BaOH) revealed the influence of OH radical reactions. The OH radical exposure was measured by adding a probe compound (para-chlorobenzoic acid, pCBA). Elucidation of chemical structures confirmed the formation of aldehyde moieties as well as the occurrence of hydroxylation reactions. Several reaction pathways for the formation of the oxidation products are proposed. Analysis of ozonated raw wastewater and the effluent of a municipal wastewater treatment plant spiked with 10 μM metoprolol exhibited a similar OP formation pattern as detected in the reaction system at pH 8 without a radical scavenger. This indicates a significant impact of OH radical exposure on the formation of OPs in real wastewater matrices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Major oxidation products (OPs) of the beta blocker propranolol, formed during ozonation in aqueous solution were identified and oxidation pathways were proposed. Ozonation led to a high number of OPs being formed. In total, chemical structures were elucidated for five different nominal masses (including constitutional isomers, approximately 13 signals), whereas at least eight other OPs and their isomers (∼30 signals) remained unidentified. The structural elucidation was performed via liquid chromatography coupled with hybride triple quadrupole with linear ion trap (LC-Qq LIT MS). The primary ozonation product, OP-291, was formed by ozone attacking the naphthalene ring, which resulted in the ring-opening and two aldehyde moieties being formed. OP-291 was further oxidized to UP-307, which was then oxidized to OP-281. Experiments were performed at pH 3 and pH 8, as well as in the presence and absence of a radical scavenger. Ozonation of wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluents spiked with propranolol (10 μM) led to the same OPs being formed as observed in the experiments with deionized water. Therefore, ozonation of WWTP effluent is resulting in the formation of a high number of OPs with an elevated toxic potential (i.e., formation of aldehydes). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
