8. Optical properties of Zitex in the infrared to submillimeter

Abstract

The results of measurements of the refractive index and power attenuation coefficient of Zitex at 290, 77, and 4 K in the spectral region from 1 to 1000 [micro]m are presented. Zitex is a porous Teflon sheet with a filling factor of ~50% and is manufactured in several varieties as a filter paper. Zitex is found to be an effective IR block, with thin (200-[micro]m) sheets transmitting less than 1% in the 1-50-[micro]m range while attenuating [??] 10% at wavelengths longer than 200 [micro]m. Some variation in the cutoff wavelength is seen, tending to be a shorter-wavelength cutoff for a smaller pore size. In addition, the thermal conductivity of Zitex at cryogenic temperatures has been measured and is found to be roughly one half that of bulk Teflon. Finally, its dielectric constant has been measured in the submillimeter as n = 1.20, resulting in extremely low dielectric reflection losses. As a result, Zitex is particularly useful as an IR blocking filter in low-noise heterodyne receivers; in the millimeter-wave range ([lambda] [??] 850 [micro]m or v [less than or equal to] 350 GHz) the attenuation of [alpha] [less than or equal to] 0.01 [cm.sup.-1] for a 3.5-mm thickness filter of Zitex G125 would raise receiver noise temperatures by OCIS codes: 120.2440, 120.7000, 160.4760, 260.3060, 260.3090, 300.6270.

Abstract

We have resolved the ultraluminous infrared galaxy (ULIRG) IRAS 09111−1007 with the new 350-μm-optimized Second Generation Submillimeter High Angular Resolution Camera (SHARC II), and present the first submillimetre fluxes and images for the system. IRAS 09111−1007 comprises two interacting luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs) with a projected nuclear separation of 39 h−171 kpc. The western galaxy is roughly four times more luminous in the submillimetre than its eastern counterpart. It is an extremely bright LIRG with an active galactic nucleus (AGN). The classification of the eastern source is uncertain: it could be a Seyfert 2 galaxy or a LINER. We highlight IRAS 09111−1007 as a system that necessitates further study: a double AGN ULIRG whose molecular gas content differs from that of other widely separated pairs, and whose ULIRG phase might not be explained by current multiple-merger and/or final-stage ULIRG scenarios. Abstract

We present radio continuum mapping, optical imaging, and spectroscopy of the newly discovered double-peaked, broad-lined active galactic nucleus (AGN) WISE J233237.05–505643.5 at redshift z = 0.3447. This source exhibits an FR-I and FR-II hybrid morphology, characterized by a bright core, jet, and Doppler-boosted lobe structures in Australian Telescope Compact Array continuum maps at 1.5, 5.6, and 9 GHz. Unlike most FR-II objects, W2332–5056 is hosted by a disk-like galaxy. The core has a projected 5'' linear radio feature that is perpendicular to the curved primary jet, hinting at unusual and complex activity within the inner 25 kpc. The multi-epoch, optical-near-IR photometric measurements indicate significant variability over a 3-20 yr baseline from the AGN component. Gemini South optical data show unusual double-peaked emission-line features: the centroids of the broad-lined components of H-alpha and H-beta are blueshifted with respect to the narrow lines and host galaxy by ~3800 km s–1. Abstract

Abstract: We report results of a recently-completed pre-formulation phase study of SPIRIT, a candidate NASA Origins Probe mission. SPIRIT is a spatial and spectral interferometer with an operating wavelength range 25–400μm. SPIRIT will provide sub-arcsecond resolution images and spectra with resolution R =3000 in a 1′ field of view to accomplish three primary scientific objectives: (1) learn how planetary systems form from protostellar disks, and how they acquire their inhomogeneous composition; (2) characterize the family of extrasolar planetary systems by imaging the structure in debris disks to understand how and where planets of different types form; and (3) learn how high-redshift galaxies formed and merged to form the present-day population of galaxies. Observations with SPIRIT will be complementary to those of the James Webb Space Telescope and the ground-based Atacama Large Millimeter Array.
