Abstract Heat shuttling phenomenon is characterized by the presence of a non-zero heat flow between two bodies without net thermal bias on average. It was initially predicted in the context of nonlinear heat conduction within atomic lattices coupled to two time-oscillating thermostats. Recent theoretical works revealed an analog of this effect for heat exchanges mediated by thermal photons between two solids having a temperature dependent emissivity. In this paper, we present the experimental proof of this effect using systems made with composite materials based on phase change materials. By periodically modulating the temperature of one of two solids we report that the system akin to heat pumping with a controllable heat flow direction. Additionally, we demonstrate the effectiveness of a simultaneous modulation of two temperatures to control both the strength and direction of heat shuttling by exploiting the phase delay between these temperatures. These results show that this effect is promising for an active thermal management of solid-state technology, to cool down solids, to insulate them from their background or to amplify heat exchanges.

AIM: To investigate the influence of ophthalmic viscoelastic devices (OVDs) and different surgical approaches on the intraocular pressure (IOP) before and after creation of the curvilinear circular capsulorhexis (CCC) as a measure for anterior chamber stability during this maneuver. METHODS: Prospective experimental WetLab study carried out on enucleated porcine eyes. IOP was measured before and after CCC with the iCare Rebound tonometer (iCare ic200; iCare Finland Oy, Vantaa, Finland). The OVDs used were a cohesive one [Z-Hyalin, Carl Zeiss Meditec AG, Germany; hyaluronic acid (HA)] and a dispersive [Z-Celcoat, Carl Zeiss Meditec AG, Germany; hydroxy propylmethylcellulosis (HPMC)]. The CCC was created using Utrata forceps or 23 g microforceps in different combinations with the OVDs. RESULTS: Using the Utrata forceps the IOP dropped from 63.65±6.44 to 11.25±3.63 mm Hg during the CCC. The use of different OVDs made no difference. Using the 23 g microforceps the IOP dropped from 65.35±8.15 to 36.55±6.09 mm Hg. The difference between IOP drop using either Utrata forceps or 23 g microforceps was highly significant regardless of the OVD used. CONCLUSION: Using the sideport for the creation of the capsulorhexis leads to a lesser drop in IOP during this maneuver compared to the main incision in enucleated porcine eyes. The use of different OVD has no significant influence on IOP drop.

Background: Screening for latent tuberculosis infection using Interferon-Gamma Release Assays is a routine procedure prior to the initiation of anti-tumor necrosis factor (TNF) biotherapy or immunosuppressive therapy. However, indeterminate results are relatively frequent and are an obstacle to treatment initiation. Aim: The aim of this cross-sectional study was to estimate the frequency of indeterminate QuantiFERON-TB Gold Plus ® test results in Tunisian patients, and to analyze the potential clinico-biological risk factors associated with these indeterminate results. Methods: Whole blood samples from 712 patients being monitored for autoimmune diseases and candidates for anti-TNF biotherapy or switch of immunosuppressive therapy were used to screen for latent tuberculosis infection using the QuantiFERON-TB Gold Plus ® test. Based on literature background, the following variables were tested for the association with indeterminate results: gender, age, diabetes, immunosuppressive drugs, lymphocyte count, Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, serum albumin, and estimated glomerular filtration rate. Results: The QuantiFERON-TB Gold Plus ® test was negative in 572 (80.3%) patients, positive in 106 (14.9%), and indeterminate in 34 (4.8%) cases. Positive results were significantly associated with a family history of confirmed and treated tuberculosis, OR (95% CI) = 52 (20.2–134.3). The use of immunosuppressive drugs and duration of treatment were significantly associated with the occurrence of indeterminate results: OR (95% CI) = 24.5 (5.8–103) and OR (95% CI) = 1.004 (1.002–1.007), respectively. Biologically, lymphopenia, hypoalbuminemia, and decreased estimated glomerular filtration rate were significant risk factors for indeterminate results: p = 5 E-6, p = 4.3 E-4, and p = 0.002, respectively. Thus, a multiple logistic regression model based on these three biological parameters enabled us to develop a predictive score for indeterminate results with a sensitivity of 91.2% and a specificity of 99.9%, AUC = 0.9964 (0.9917–1), p = 2.8 E-52. Conclusion: Immunosuppressive therapy, lymphopenia, hypoalbuminemia, and kidney failure appeared to be risk factors for indeterminate QuantiFERON-TB Gold Plus ® results.

IntroductionEarly focal brain injuries lead to long-term disabilities with frequent cognitive impairments, suggesting global dysfunction beyond the lesion. While plasticity of the immature brain promotes better learning, outcome variability across individuals is multifactorial. Males are more vulnerable to early injuries and neurodevelopmental disorders than females, but long-term sex differences in brain growth after an early focal lesion have not been described yet. With this MRI longitudinal morphometry study of brain development after a Neonatal Arterial Ischemic Stroke (NAIS), we searched for differences between males and females in the trajectories of ipsi- and contralesional gray matter growth in childhood and adolescence, while accounting for lesion characteristics.MethodsWe relied on a longitudinal cohort (AVCnn) of patients with unilateral NAIS who underwent clinical and MRI assessments at ages 7 and 16 were compared to age-matched controls. Non-lesioned volumes of gray matter (hemispheres, lobes, regions, deep structures, cerebellum) were extracted from segmented T1 MRI images at 7 (Patients: 23 M, 16 F; Controls: 17 M, 18 F) and 16 (Patients: 18 M, 11 F; Controls: 16 M, 15 F). These volumes were analyzed using a Linear Mixed Model accounting for age, sex, and lesion characteristics.ResultsWhole hemisphere volumes were reduced at both ages in patients compared to controls (gray matter volume: −16% in males, −10% in females). In ipsilesional hemisphere, cortical gray matter and thalamic volume losses (average −13%) mostly depended on lesion severity, suggesting diaschisis, with minimal effect of patient sex. In the contralesional hemisphere however, we consistently found sex differences in gray matter volumes, as only male volumes were smaller than in male controls (average −7.5%), mostly in territories mirroring the contralateral lesion. Females did not significantly deviate from the typical trajectories of female controls. Similar sex differences were found in both cerebellar hemispheres.DiscussionThese results suggest sex-dependent growth trajectories after an early brain lesion with a contralesional growth deficit in males only. The similarity of patterns at ages 7 and 16 suggests that puberty has little effect on these trajectories, and that most of the deviation in males occurs in early childhood, in line with the well-described perinatal vulnerability of the male brain, and with no compensation thereafter.

Background: Although, several studies have assessed the association of the phospholipase A2 receptor (PLA2R) and HLA-DQA1 SNPs with primary membranous nephropathy (PMN), results were inconsistent and between-studies heterogeneity needs to be investigated. Objectives: The aim of this review was to summarize existing data on the contribution of 10 SNPs in the PLA2R and HLA-DQA1 genes to PMN susceptibility and to investigate the between-studies heterogeneity by subgroup analyses and meta-regressions. Design: This study was performed according to the PRISMA guidelines for systematic reviews and meta-analyses. Data sources and methods: An electronic literature search for eligible studies among all papers published prior to January 10, 2024, was conducted through PubMed, EMBASE, Web of science and Scopus databases. Meta-analyses together with subgroup analyses and meta-regressions were performed for the 10 following SNPs: rs4664308, rs3749117, rs3749119, rs35771982, rs3828323, rs16844715, rs1511223, rs6757188, rs2715918, and rs2187668. Results: Combined analyses revealed a significant increase in PMN risk conferred by the following alleles: rs4664308*A, rs3749117*T, rs3749119*C, rs35771982*G, rs3828323*C, rs16844715*C, rs1511223*A, rs2715918*A, and rs2187668*A, all P -values

The purpose of this study was to provide new insights into the effects of salinity on growth and nutritional value of lamb’s lettuce Valerianella locusta grown in two different culture systems, hydroponic and soil, and subjected to 0 and 50 mM NaCl for 3 weeks. Salinity treatment reduced shoot dry weight (DW) by 50% in both growing media, root DW by 41% only on hydroponics, relative growth rate (RGR) also decreased, and K+/Na+ ions ratio in Valerianella locusta grown both hydroponically and in soil. Salinity also lowered shoot total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoids content (TFC), radical scavenging activity (ABTS), anti-amylase, and anti-acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activities. In contrast, it promoted shoot total antioxidant activity (TAA) in both growing systems. When comparing both growing systems, soil-grown Valerianella locusta was found to have significantly higher TPC (41.6 and 28.1 mg GAE g-1 DW) and TFC (39.6 and 35.6 mg CE g-1 DW) for control and salt treated shoots, respectively. Further, it showed a better TAA and ABTS scavenging ability, as well as superior anti-α-amylase (94.3 and 39.5 mg ACE. g-1 DW) and anti-AChE (307.4 and 228.3 μg DE. g-1 DW) activities, under control and salt stress conditions respectively. Additionally, soil-grown Valerianella locusta showed better K+/Na+ ions homoeostasis compared to the hydroponically-grown. This study highlighted two main points: first, it revealed that lamb’s lettuce is a sensitive crop to be grown on saline lands, and second it underlined the distinct differences in growth aspects and nutritional quality between hydroponics and soil cultivation. Additionally, this study is the first to shed some light on the interesting medicinal quality of lamb’s lettuce as a leafy vegetable.

Cette étude quantitative vise à explorer les liens entre la mobilité professionnelle et les enseignants créatifs de la région de Tunis, échantillonnés aléatoirement (n= 338). Les liens sont étudiés en fonction de l’âge des enseignants créatifs et de la pauvreté de leur environnement professionnel. Les résultats révèlent une créativité plus élevée des enseignants mobiles en comparaison avec les enseignants stables. De plus, l’étude a montré une relation significative positive entre la mobilité professionnelle et les enseignants créatifs, notamment les plus jeunes. Par ailleurs, la mobilité professionnelle des enseignants créatifs est corrélée négativement à la pauvreté de leur environnement professionnel.

Neuromorphic computing systems are biologically inspired approaches created from many highly connected neurons to model neuroscience theories and solve machine learning problems. They promise to drastically improve the efficiency of critical computational tasks such as decision-making and perception. Combining neuromorphic computing systems and 3D interconnect (3D-NoC) technology leads to an advanced architecture that inherits the benefits of both computing and interconnect paradigms. However, designing large-scale neuromorphic systems based on 3D-NoC faces several challenges, including thermal power, power distribution, increased power density at the heat sink interface, and fabrication requirements. This work tackles the thermal issues in designing large-scale neuromorphic systems by proposing a Balanced Thermal-State-Aware Mapping (BTSAM) for 3D-NoC-based neuromorphic systems. This includes a Periodic Activity Scoring (PAS), a Seesaw Neuron Clustering (SNC) method, and a thermal-aware genetic algorithm to eliminate hotspots, balance the thermal state, and lower the temperature while keeping the system’s accuracy acceptable. Evaluation results on various system configurations demonstrate a notable up to 12.4 K and 5.2 K temperature reduction compared to linear methods and HeterGenMap, respectively, and a $4\times $ increase in Mean-Time-to-Failure (MTTF), with an acceptable power and area overheads and little degradation of the communication cost.

Collaborative edge learning has emerged in various domains like vehicular networks and medical care, allowing local model training on edge devices while preserving privacy. The integration of blockchain technology further enhances security and privacy in the learning environment, although challenges such as communication overhead and vulnerability to poisoning attacks have yet to be resolved. This paper proposes a hybrid clustered blockchain method (HCB) for collaborative edge learning, which introduces a unique combination of cluster-based model updates and the use of delegate nodes for efficient model aggregation. We introduce the delegate-based adaptive model aggregation for robust collaborative learning, termed DAMA-RCL, and a novel disassembling-reassembling method for practical model transmission on the blockchain network. Experimental results demonstrate that HCB significantly enhances communication efficiency, reducing hop counts and transmission time by over 90%, while maintaining learning performance compared to traditional collaborative learning. Additionally, DAMA-RCL exhibits strong resilience in scenarios with up to 50% malicious clients. The HCB approach for collaborative edge learning, along with the DAMA-RCL algorithm and the model disassembling-reassembling method, provides a promising solution to the challenges of communication efficiency, privacy, and security, paving the way for effective and reliable collaborative learning in various application domains.

In the present era, energy issues are a significant concern, and the energy trading market is the crucial sector to facilitate supply-demand balance and sustainable development. For better demand response and grid balancing, vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology is rapidly gaining importance in energy markets. To narrow the gap between ideal V2G goals and actual applications needs, energy trading system has to overcome the challenges of over-centralized structure, inflexible timeline adaptation, limited market scale and energy efficiency, excessive feedback time costs, and low rate of economic return. To address these issues and ensure a secure energy market, we propose a decentralized intelligent V2G system called V2G Forecasting and Trading Network (V2GFTN) to achieve efficient and robust energy trading in campus EV networks. A multiple blockchain structure is proposed in V2GFTN to ensure trading security and data privacy between energy requests and offers. V2GFTN also integrates energy forecasting functions for EVs with a smart energy trading and EV allocation mechanism called SRET so that the EVs with driving tasks can supply their extra power back to the grid and achieve higher energy efficiency and economic profit. Through rigorous experimentation and compared with equivalent studies, V2GFTN system has demonstrated higher economic profit and energy demand fill rate by up to 1.6 times and 1.9 times than the state-of-the-art V2G approaches.

Abstract The ability to accurately predict long-term kidney transplant survival can assist nephrologists in making therapeutic decisions. However, predicting kidney transplantation (KT) outcomes is challenging due to the complexity of the factors involved. Artificial intelligence (AI) has become an increasingly important tool in the prediction of medical outcomes. Our goal was to utilize both conventional and AI-based methods to predict long-term kidney transplant survival. Our study included 407 KTs divided into two groups (group A: with a graft lifespan greater than 5 years and group B: with poor graft survival). We first performed a traditional statistical analysis and then developed predictive models using machine learning (ML) techniques. Donors in group A were significantly younger. The use of Mycophenolate Mofetil (MMF) was the only immunosuppressive drug that was significantly associated with improved graft survival. The average estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) in the 3rd month post-KT was significantly higher in group A. The number of hospital readmissions during the 1st year post-KT was a predictor of graft survival. In terms of early post-transplant complications, delayed graft function (DGF), acute kidney injury (AKI), and acute rejection (AR) were significantly associated with poor graft survival. Among the 35 AI models developed, the best model had an AUC of 89.7% (Se: 91.9%; Sp: 87.5%). It was based on ten variables selected by an ML algorithm, with the most important being hypertension and a history of red-blood-cell transfusion. The use of AI provided us with a robust model enabling fast and precise prediction of 5-year graft survival using early and easily collectible variables. Our model can be used as a decision-support tool to early detect graft status.

Abstract Background Due to the soilborne and tuber-borne nature of their causative agents, Fusarium wilt, Rhizoctonia root canker and black dot diseases are still leading to serious problems in potato production in Tunisia and worldwide. Among endophytic bacteria, the genus Bacillus is one of the most exploited microbial groups known as potent biocontrol agents against several potato diseases. In the present study, six strains belonging to five Bacillus species were screened for their abilities to inhibit root and wilt potato pathogens in vitro, in vivo and under natural conditions over three cropping seasons and to promote plant growth. Results Based on the dual-culture assays, the whole-cell suspensions of SV39 and SV104 (Bacillus tequilensis), SV41 (B. subtilis), SV44 (B. methylotrophicus) and SV65 (B. amyloliquefaciens subsp. plantarum) strains exhibited potent antifungal activity against important potato soilborne phytopathogens with ~ 65 to 70% inhibition rates. Significant inhibition rates were also induced by the cell-free culture filtrates, the butanolic and the chloroformic extracts depending on the target pathogens, the concentration used and the Bacillus strain tested. In pot experiment, a decrease in Rhizoctonia root canker severity, ranging from 43 to 65% compared to the inoculated and untreated control, was induced by all Bacillus spp. strain-based treatments, while SV39-, S42- and SV65-based treatments were the most effective in suppressing by 50–53 and 65–52%, black dot severity and the relative vascular discoloration extent induced by F. oxysporum f. sp. tuberosi, respectively, relative to positive control. This biocontrol potential was associated with an enhancement of potato growth parameters. Field studies indicated that soil treatment with the most of the Bacillus spp. strains had significantly controlled all the target fungal soilborne diseases and improved at the least two growth and/or production parameters depending on the strain used and the cropping seasons. SV39-, SV41-, SV44- and SV104-based treatments resulted in a significant increase in tuber yield in one cropping season. Conclusion These Bacillus spp. strains could be used in combinations and/or introduced with other existing practices in order to provide supplemental control of target diseases and yield promotion under organic or conventional potato production systems.

Chloromethane, CH3Cl, is the first organohalogen molecule to be detected in the interstellar medium. Using the recently generated accurate three-dimensional potential energy surface (3D-PES) for the weakly bound CH335Cl–He complex, we deduced that of CH337Cl–He. Both 3D-PESs were incorporated later into dynamical computations code for nuclear motions treatments of each isotopologue colliding with He. We determined the state-to-state (de-)excitation cross sections for transitions among the 105 lowest rotational levels of both ortho-CH335Cl and ortho-CH337Cl (up to jkɛ = 206±). For total energies up to 100 cm−1, we used the quantum close-coupling methodology, and we adopted the coupled state approach for higher energies (up to 2500 cm−1). Rate coefficients for temperatures ranging from 5 to 150 K are then deduced after averaging these cross sections over a Maxwell–Boltzmann velocity distribution. Computations show that isotopic effects are weak, validating the use of collision rates of ortho-CH335Cl for ortho-CH337Cl and vice-versa. However, we expect that our results will be helpful to accurately determine the abundances of these isotopologues in the interstellar medium and, more generally, for understanding the complex and still not fully elucidated chemistry of chlorine containing molecular species there. Root-associated microbiota play a key role in plant growth, resilience, and health. In this study, the microbial community structure in the rhizosphere of 12 pumpkins accessions belonging to three Cucurbita species i.e. C. pepo, C. maxima, and C. moschata, was monitored using the soil dilution plating technique on specific media. All accessions tested were also screened for their production and yield parameters. Based on Principal Component Analysis (PCA), 4 accessions of C. maxima (namely C5, C23, C14.2 and C6.2) were characterized by the greatest average fruit weight and yield, the highest actinomycetes, bacterial, Trichoderma spp. and Aspergillus spp. communities, and the lowest total fungal population in their rhizosphere. Positive correlations were noted between fruit fresh weight, culturable bacteria and Trichoderma spp. populations in the rhizopshere of pumpkins accessions. Negative correlations were noted between fruit weight and yield parameters and the total culturable fungal populations. The current study clearly demonstrated that the rhizosphere soil microbial communities have been shaped by Cucurbita species and accessions. Based on the significant links observed between soil microbiota and yield parameters, future pumpkin breeding programs could be focused on the selection of accessions that are quite able to exploit these associated beneficial microbial communities.

Chlamydia psittaci ‒ related community-acquired pneumonia associated to acute myocarditis was diagnosed in a young man with no medical history, and a professional exposition to birds. The diagnosis was confirmed with positive specific polymerase chain reaction in bronchoalveolar lavage. The patient was treated with spiramycin for two weeks with anti-inflammatory treatment for myocarditis for three months. Clinical and biological improvement was rapidly observed followed by normalization of electrocardiogram and chest CT scan. No relapse was reported for over a two-year follow-up.

Background: Until now, there has been limited information on the prevalence and the phylogeny of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato in Ixodes ticks in Tunisia, particularly in Ixodes inopinatus. Methods: The present study aimed to determine the prevalence and the phylogeny of B. burgdorferi s.l., in coexisted I. ricinus and I. inopinatus ticks collected from Northern Tunisia. One hundred questig ticks were collected during winter 2020 by tick-dragging method in Beja gouvernorate located in the north of Tunisia. Real-time PCR panel targeting B. burgdorferi s.l. 23S rRNA gene were performed. Positive DNA samples were subjected to conventional PCRs targeting 457 bp fragment of the Borrelia sp. flagellin (fla) gene using primers FlaF/FlaR. The identified Borrelia sp. isolate underwent partial sequence analysis to determine genospecies and evaluate their phylogenetic position. Results: The study revealed a prevalence rate of 28% (28/100) for B. burgdorferi sensu lato in the Ixodes ticks. The prevalence rates across tick species and genders did not show significant variations (p > 0.05). Interestingly, the study underlines the coexistence of I. inopinatus and I. ricinus sharing the same geographic areas in Northern Tunisia. Furthermore, DNA of B. lusitaniae was detected in I. inopinatus ticks for the first time in Tunisia. Revealed B. lusitaniae bacterium is similar to previously identified strains in Mediterranean region, but distinct from those isolated exclusively from countries of Eastern and Central Europe, such as Serbia, Romania, and Poland. This study highlights the prevalence of B. burgdorferi s.l. in I. ricinus/I. inopinatus ticks, and reveals B. lusitaniae in I. inopinatus ticks for the first time in Tunisia. Conclusion: These findings suggest the involvement of I. inopinatus as a potential vector of this pathogenic genospeciess in Tunisia. This may help understanding the ecology of Ixodes ticks, the natural infection and the transmission dynamics of Borrelia species in this country.

Abstract Background The decision about which type of general anesthetic to administer is typically made by the clinical team without patient engagement. This study examined patients’ preferences, experiences, attitudes, beliefs, perceptions, and perceived social norms about anesthesia and about engaging in the decision regarding general anesthetic choice with their clinician. Methods We conducted a survey in the United States, sent to a panel of surgical patients through Qualtrics (Qualtrics, Provo, UT) from March 2022 through May 2022. Questions were developed based on the Theory of Planned Behavior and validated measures were used when available. A patient partner who had experienced both intravenous and inhaled anesthesia contributed to the development and refinement of the questions. Results A total of 806 patients who received general anesthesia for an elective procedure in the last five years completed the survey. 43% of respondents preferred a patient-led decision making role and 28% preferred to share decision making with their clinical team, yet only 7.8% reported being engaged in full shared decision making about the anesthesia they received. Intraoperative awareness, pain, nausea, vomiting and quickly returning to work and usual household activities were important to respondents. Waking up in the middle of surgery was the most commonly reported concern, despite this experience being reported only 8% of the time. Most patients (65%) who searched for information about general anesthesia noted that it took a lot of effort to find the information, and 53% agreed to feeling frustrated during the search. Conclusions Most patients prefer a patient-led or shared decision making process when it comes to their anesthetic care and want to be engaged in the decision. However, only a small percentage of patients reported being fully engaged in the decision. Further studies should inform future shared decision-making tools, informed consent materials, educational materials and framing of anesthetic choices for patients so that they are able to make a choice regarding the anesthetic they receive.

Spain is the leading citrus producer in the European Union, with the Segura River Basin in southeastern Spain playing a crucial role in this industry. However, the impact of local agricultural production on water appropriation has been overlooked. This study assesses the water footprint (WF) of both conventional and organic citrus production using the Water Footprint Network approach, addressing beneficial practices aiming to reduce the water appropriation impact. Focusing on four citrus fields, the evaluation covers green, blue, and grey components of the WF, and secondary impacts from electricity and fossil fuel consumption, which are usually omitted from the WF assessments. The results indicate that the total WF for organic orange and lemon production is over 19% lower than for the conventional system. Notable differences are observed in the blue component, attributed to the use of vegetative mulches, and in the grey component due to the reduced impact of fertilizers in organic practices. The individual and total WF values are lower than those reported in other citrus studies, and are linked to efficient resource management in semi-arid regions that helps overcome water scarcity. Nevertheless, the sustainability analysis reveals major challenges for the citrus sector in the basin, highlighting the strain on resources given the limited water availability. The available water remaining (AWARE) indicator demonstrates extremely high potential water deprivation in the area. Overall, the study underscores the necessity of integrating WF analyses in agricultural planning to manage resource scarcity effectively. Future research should focus on developing precise methodologies and incorporating unconventional farming practices to enhance sustainability. This research provides valuable insights for stakeholders aiming to optimize water use in agriculture under scarce resource conditions.
