L'hybridation interspécifique entre le saumon atlantique et la truite commune dans la nature a été mise en évidence dans différents pays d'Europe et au Canada. Une étude a été entreprise pour examiner son incidence dans des populations de salmonidés de certaines rivières des Asturies (nord de l'Espagne) et du sud-ouest de la France. Elle a été complétée par des expériences en milieu contrôlé pour déterminer les causes et les conditions de la disparition des barrières comportementales permettant le maintien de l'isolement reproducteur. Les hypothèses de travail étaient que l'hybridation pouvait être favorisée par le comportement de «sneaker» des tacons mâles précoces et par les repeuplements en juvéniles des deux espèces. Les résultats obtenus confirment que l'hybridation entre la truite et le saumon est un phénomène répandu, qui peut affecter localement des fractions significatives des populations (9,4 % sur la rivière Narcea dans les Asturies). Dans l'aire originelle de distribution des deux espèces, le croisement s'effectue dans le sens femelle saumon x mâle truite. Dans les conditions normales de sympatrie, les barrières d'isolement reproducteur pré-appariement paraissent solides en raison du comportement agressif du mâle conspécifique dominant qui parvient à écarter efficacement les mâles compétiteurs hétérospécifiques. En l'absence de mâle conspécifique, l'hybridation peut avoir lieu. Cependant, les femelles modifient leur comportement, ralentissent leur activité de frai et le succès reproducteur, particulièrement chez la truite, diminue. Par ailleurs, les hypothèses de travail ne sont pas vérifiées. Pour éviter l'hybridation, il est recommandé au gestionnaire de veiller à la qualité et à la quantité des zones de reproduction, de maintenir l'équilibre des populations de géniteurs et de limiter les repeuplements en sujets non autochtones.

Les îles Kerguelen (Terres Australes et Antarctiques Françaises) sont, à l'origine, vierges de toute espèce de poisson d'eau douce. Les quelques espèces de Salmonidés, introduites à la fin des années cinquante dans le cadre d'une politique d'occupation et de mise en valeur du Territoire, se sont acclimatées à l'environnement subantarctique et naturalisées avec plus ou moins de succès en fonction de leurs stratégies adaptatives respectives. Objet d'un suivi scientifique continu, ces populations apparaissent comme d'excellents modèles pour des études de génétique et de dynamique des populations. Les phénomènes de colonisation, limités dans un premier temps à l'augmentation régulière des densités de population et une extension rapide intra-rivière, ont connu un développement spectaculaire depuis les années quatre-vingt, à la suite des modifications importantes du climat local, dont l'influence sur les populations a été multiple. La vaste superficie de Kerguelen et les caractéristiques de ses réseaux hydrographiques permettent d'envisager de continuer à tirer parti positivement des introductions passées de Salmonidés, sur les plans scientifique et de mise en valeur du territoire, tout en développant une politique de protection des écosystèmes aquatiques et terrestres conforme à l'évolution actuelle des mentalités.

Le risque d'introduction accidentelle du saumon coho dans les rivières peuplées par le saumon atlantique a conduit à développer des recherches en milieu expérimental sur les mécanismes de la compétition entre alevins et juvéniles des deux espèces. Les conséquences possibles de cette compétition ont été évaluées en termes de survie, croissance, prédation, dévalaison et occupation de l'habitat. Les résultats montrent que la présence des saumons cohos n'a pas une influence très marquée sur les alevins ou juvéniles de saumon atlantique si l'environnement trophique est favorable. La microdistribution est différente, les saumons atlantiques occupant plutôt les radiers alors que les saumons cohos préfèrent les profonds. Le comportement pélagique et grégaire des jeunes saumons cohos, nettement plus gros que les saumons atlantiques du même âge dès l'émergence, peut être opposé au comportement benthique et inféodé au substrat de ces derniers. Ces différences s'accentuent en sympatrie, aux dépens du saumon atlantique, désavantagé par la taille. Sous conditions trophiques limitantes, la croissance et la sédentarité des alevins de saumon atlantique sont significativement affectées par la présence des cohos, ce qui justifie d'émettre d'expresses réserves sur l'intérêt de l'introduction du saumon coho dans les rivières françaises.

La réponse de juvéniles de saumon aux fortes baisses de niveau caractéristiques de l'étiage n'est pas bien connue. Trois expériences ont été menées en fin d'été dans un ruisseau artificiel comportant des séries de 3 biefs (10 m x 3 m) constitués d'amont en aval de séquences d'habitat radier, plat, profond. En eau profonde, les tacons ne réagissent pas aux baisses de niveau et de débit. Dans les eaux peu profondes, ils réduisent leur activité, en particulier alimentaire, et dans des conditions critiques, une partie de la population se déplace vers la plus proche zone profonde. Les autres s'enfouissent dans le substrat. Après la montée du débit, une partie des dévalants retourne dans l'habitat radier.

Un ruisseau artificiel expérimental (chenal de fraie) a été réalisé sur un affluent de la Haute Nivelle au Pays Basque. Le dispositif est caractérisé par un environnement quasi naturel où certains paramètres (débit, profondeur d'eau et vitesse du courant, granulométrie) peuvent être manipulés ou contrôlés. En décembre 1981, 5 couples de Saumon atlantique (Salmo salar L.) introduits dans le chenal ont frayé naturellement. Le nombre de frayères et la surface moyenne occupée par femelle ont été précisés, ainsi que la durée de formation d'une frayère. Des observations ont été faites sur le comportement de reproduction, la répartition des frayères et le taux de surcreusement dans des conditions de densité faible. L'influence de la vitesse du courant et de la température sur le déroulement de la fraie est suggérée. L'estimation de la fécondité et du taux de rétention d'ovules a permis d'évaluer le succès de la reproduction. Les résultats relatifs à la survie pendant l'incubation et aux modalités de l'émergence et de la dévalaison des alevins seront présentés dans un prochain article.

Dans un chenal artificiel expérimental, des œufs de saumon atlantique (Salmo salar L.) ont été pondus naturellement ou ont été enfouis au stade embryonné. A la fin de la résorption de la vésicule, une fraction importante des alevins survivants dévale de la zone de frayère. La dévalaison semble stimulée par des baisses de niveau ou des hausses de température et ralentie en période de pleine lune. D'autres facteurs pouvant être responsables de cette dévalaison sont discutés. La survie jusqu'à la collecte de tous les alevins est estimée à 74 p. 100 pour les sujets issus de la reproduction naturelle et est égale à 80 p. 100 pour ceux issus d'œufs introduits dans le gravier au stade embryonné. Des comparaisons entre ces résultats et ceux obtenus dans d'autres chenaux de fraie ou en milieu naturel montrent la validité de cette méthode pour la production d'alevins de saumon atlantique destinés au repeuplement.

The Subantarctic Kerguelen Islands (49°S, 70°E) contain freshwater ecosystems among the most isolated in the world. Concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were assessed in the muscle of 48 brook trout and 38 brown trout caught during summer and spring 2006 in the rivers, lakes and ponds of Kerguelen. The sum of 29 PCBs averaged 404 and 358ngg−1 lipid, and dioxin-like PCB was 19 and 69ngg−1 lipid, in brook and brown trout, respectively. The values showed a high variability and some fish accumulated PCBs at levels similar to those of fish from impacted areas. While inter-sex differences were limited, the season and the morphotype appeared to have the most influence. Fish captured in summer had muscle PCB concentrations about three times higher than those caught in spring and the ‘river’ morphotype of brook trout showed the highest PCB levels. The effect of the presence of stone blocks in the spawning habitat on the reproductive success of mature male parr of Atlantic salmon Salmo salar of various sizes and ages was tested in an artificial channel. Shelters allowed smaller individuals to contribute to egg fertilization as much as large parr, suggesting that the size-based dominance observed in a shelterless habitat was not maintained in a more complex habitat. In the twelve redds sampled, 563 eggs were collected for parental assignment and the physical habitat was characterised to investigate the possible relationship between parr reproductive success and habitat complexity. The overall contribution of mature male parr was particularly high (87%, one of the highest estimates ever reported). Concerning habitat complexity, granulometry and shelter diversity were correlated with the number of parr breeders contributing to egg fertilisation in each redd. Although televisions are commonplace in many long-term care facilities for people with dementia, little research has been done on the possible effects of television viewing on residents' behaviors. The authors' study aims were to document observable behaviors and activities of residents before, during, and after viewing television programs and to determine whether programs had an observable effect on behaviors. The authors enrolled 22 residents in a residential dementia care facility (4 to 5 people in each of the five residential wings). Two raters completed systematic observations for 5 consecutive days at baseline, during the presentation of eight television programs, and for 30 minutes following the program. The authors found that 'dozing' was the most common activity during program viewing. In addition, many participants remained in the television area, 'watching' a blank television screen in the 30 minutes following the program viewing. Hybridization between sympatric species is not uncommon in the wild. Wild allotriploids (individuals with two chromosome sets from a species + one chromosome set from another species) are generally the result of a backcross between interspecific hybrids that produce unreduced gametes and one of the parental species. In animals, allotriploids are commonly sterile, except for some vertebrate species complexes in which allotriploids reproduce by parthenogenesis, gynogenesis and/or hybridogenesis, producing generally clonal or hemiclonal gametes; nuclear DNA introgression between hybridizing species is considered to be extremely rare. Employing species-specific molecular markers, we show genetic introgression between the chromosomally well-differentiated salmonids Atlantic salmon (2n = 58) and brown trout (2 n = 80) through spontaneous bisexual reproduction of allotriploids leading to salmon-like offspring bearing some brown trout genes. Although introgression between these Salmo species can occur via allotriploids, we hypothesize that extinction of parental species can be discarded based on very low survival of allotriploid offspring. Genetic variation at 24 enzymatic loci was investigated in eight south European Atlantic salmon populations from the rivers Nivelle, Cares, Sella, Narcea, Esva, Navia, Porcia and Eo. In these rivers, management based on supplementation of native populations with foreign stocks was carried out for more than one decade. Population genetic patterns expressed in terms of allele frequencies, mean heterozygosity and conformity to Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, were significantly different between populations. Relevant temporal changes of genetic variability were reported. Evidence that foreign stocking has disturbed the genetic patterns of some of the studied populations is presented. Single females were placed into an experimental channel with either one or three males, after which spawning was monitored continuously. Male status was confirmed using genetic parentage analysis. Daily fat loss was monitored with the Torry Fish Fatmeter and validated through biochemical analyses. Several comparisons were in the expected direction but not statistically significant and therefore require further study: daily fat loss appeared higher for dominant males relative to subordinate males and in the three-male treatment relative to the one-male treatment. Most of the variation among individuals remained unexplained, suggesting that several as yet unknown factors strongly influence fat loss in spawning salmon. A large and significant effect was that daily fat loss was higher for females than for males, a difference that might contribute to the shorter spawning duration typical of females. Male sneaking behaviour can lead to interspecific hybridisation if sneakers attempt to fertilise ova in heterospecific mating, contributing to break down of interspecific barriers. In south European rivers, sneaking Atlantic salmon males fertilise an important proportion of ova from adult females in heterospecific crosses, up to 65%. In a south French flow-controlled stream, we found that they were able to naturally fertilise brown trout ova in absence of brown trout males. Abstract Genetic analyses were performed on the progeny of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) sampled in natural redds of three rivers flowing into the Bay of Biscay, the Nivelle, the Mandeo and the Sella. These rivers are at the southern limit of the European distribution of the species and their populations are small and endangered by human activities. Nine variable number of tandem repeat (VNTR) loci (five minisatellites and four microsatellites) were used for parentage analysis. Multiple male participation was recognized in the fertilization of eggs. A large proportion was fertilized by precociously mature parr. We demonstrate that multiple paternity derived from mature parr is crucial for the conservation of genetic variability in small populations of Atlantic salmon. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The spatial and temporal patterns of dispersal and the survival of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) fry and parr were analysed over 1 year in a small stream of the Basque Country (south-west France). Dispersal just after emergence was studied with eight drift nets placed 10 to 800 m downstream from an artificial redd stocked with 15 000 eyed eggs. Subsequent distribution of parr was determined by electrofishing in June, October, and February in representative sections of the stream including habitats 750 m upstream and 2400 m downstream from the redd. Early dispersal following emergence lasted 12 days for the majority (95%) of the fry population. Most fry (71%) settled within the first 200 m downstream from the redd, and 91% within the first 400 m. In June, parr were found 2400 m downstream and 750 m upstream, with 68% of the population established within 900 m downstream, and only 4% upstream. In October, there was a slight downstream shift of densities. In February, 56% of the parr were found within 900 m downstream and 11% upstream. Brown trout were introduced into the Kerguelen Islands (subantarctica) in 1958. Since then, acclimatized populations have colonized adjoining rivers and have undergone a differentiation into migratory and sedentary forms in either lakes or the sea. In the Kerguelen rivers, free of indigenous fish and characterized by an elementary structure, relationships between environmental factors and trout population parameters are more direct and thus easier to demontrate.The sea trout population of the Baie Norvegienne (SW Kerguelen) has been sampled for 18 years. Annual growth increments in the river and in the sea were backcalculated and validated. Population densities were determined by electrofishing inventories in test areas representative of the different biotas. Mean annual air temperatures were obtained from the recordings of the meteorological station at Port-aux-Francais, close to the study area. Examination of correlations with growth showed a highly significant effect of temperature for the age groups: first year in the river and first and second year at sea, which were not subjected to strong spatial competition. No effect of temperature was observed among second and third year age groups in the river for which favourable areas and feeding resources were less abundant due to a highly significant increase in population density.
