Abstract

The Q&U Bolometric Interferometer for Cosmology (QL’BIC) is the first bolometric interferometer designed to measure the primordial B-mode polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). Bolometric interferometry is a novel technique that combines the sensitivity of bolometric detectors with the control of systematic effects that is typical of interferometry, both key features in the quest for the faint signal of the primordial B-modes. A unique feature is the so-called “spectral imaging”, i.e., the ability to recover the sky signal in several sub-bands within the physical band during data analysis. This feature provides an in-band spectral resolution of ∆v/v ~ 0.04 that is unattainable by a traditional imager. This is a key tool for controlling the Galactic foregrounds contamination. In this paper, we describe the principles of bolometric interferometry, the current status of the QU BIC experiment and future prospects.

Abstract

A study of the oxidation of alkanes, alkenes and alkylbenzenes by t-BuOOH based on the Kharasch reaction and Mn(III)- and Fe(III)-porphyrin catalysis shows that t-BuO. and t-BuOO. radicals are involved in these oxidations which are associated with the Gif reaction. The oxidation proceeds through removal of hydrogen from t-BuOOH by t-BuO. in nonbasic solvents, but is inhibited in solvents forming hydrogen bonds with t-BuOOH.

14. On the alignment of haloes, filaments and magnetic fields in the simulated cosmic web.

Abstract

The continuous flow of gas and dark matter across scales in the cosmic web can generate correlated dynamical properties of haloes and filaments (and the magnetic fields they contain). With this work, we study the halo spin properties and orientation with respect to filaments, and the morphology of the magnetic field around these objects, for haloes with masses in the range ∼108–1014 M⊙ and filaments up to ∼8 Mpc long. Furthermore, we study how these properties vary in presence, or lack thereof, of different (astro)physical processes and with different magnetic initial conditions. We perform cosmological magnetohydrodynamical simulations with the Eulerian code Enzo and we develop a simple and robust algorithm to study the filamentary connectivity of haloes in three dimensions. We investigate the morphological and magnetic properties and focus on the alignment of the magnetic field along filaments: our analysis suggests that the degree of this alignment is partially dependent on the physical processes involved, as well as on magnetic initial conditions. We discuss the contribution of this effect on a potential attempt to detect the magnetic field surrounding these objects: we find that it introduces a bias in the estimation of the magnetic field from Faraday rotation measure techniques. Specifically, given the strong tendency we find for extragalactic magnetic fields to align with the filaments axis, the value of the magnetic field can be underestimated by a factor ∼3, because this effect contributes to making the line-of-sight magnetic field (for filaments in the plane of the sky) much smaller than the total one. Abstract

Structure formation shocks are believed to be the largest accelerators of cosmic rays in the Universe. However, little is still known about their efficiency in accelerating relativistic electrons and protons as a function of their magnetization properties, i.e. of their magnetic field strength and topology. In this work, we analysed both uniform and adaptive mesh resolution simulations of large-scale structures with the magnetohydrodynamical grid code enzo , studying the dependence of shock obliquity with different realistic scenarios of cosmic magnetism. We found that shock obliquities are more often perpendicular than what would be expected from a random 3D distribution of vectors, and that this effect is particularly prominent in the proximity of filaments, due to the action of local shear motions. By coupling these results to recent works from particle-in-cell simulations, we estimated the flux of cosmic ray protons in galaxy clusters, and showed that in principle the riddle of the missed detection of hadronic γ-ray emission by the Fermi -LAT can be explained if only quasi-parallel shocks accelerate protons. On the other hand, for most of the cosmic web the acceleration of cosmic ray electrons is still allowed, due to the abundance of quasi-perpendicular shocks. A series of 27 Mn(III)-tetraarylporphyrins bearing heterogeneous substituents on the phenyl rings at the meso positions were subjected to positive ion fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry The source spectra yielded the molecular ion and a few peaks confirmative of the chemical structure. Major processes were hydrogenolytic loss of the aryl rings or of their substituents. Molecules carrying a side-chain underwent loss of the chain either as a solution process (amide linkage) or as a gas-phase process (phenolic ether linkage). Collisionally activated dissociation mass-analysed ion kinetic energy spectroscopy allowed discrimination between the two types of fragmentation processes and some other previously unreported gas-phase reaction channels to be recognized. Abstract

The autophagic vacuolar myopathies (AVMs) are an emerging group of heterogeneous muscular disorders, characterized by the presence of autophagic vacuoles, whose membranes exhibit sarcolemmal features. Although several myopathies with these features have been described, the only one in which the gene defect is known is the Danon disease, due to mutations in the lysosome-associated membrane protein-2 (LAMP2). Given the pathologic features similar to those in Danon disease, the molecular defects in the remaining AVMs could involve proteins related to lysosomal function. Recent evidence has demonstrated lysosomes are important in maintaining cellular processes in skeletal muscle and autophagy acts as contributor to disease pathogenesis and progression. We have developed a “preferential exome” NGS workflow, named LysoPlex, to sequence at high coverage 12,786 human exons of 891 genes. These genes are predicted to be involved in lysosomal function, endocytosis and autophagy pathway and most of them are not yet associated to known genetic disorders. We designed the enrichment probes using a Haloplex custom platform targeting 99.48% of exons. Until now, with Lysoplex, we have been able to perform molecular diagnosis of lysosomal storage disorders (LSDs) and neuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses (NCL), identifying disease-causing mutations in 70 patients and pointing out putative novel causative genes. Moreover, we are recruiting samples from AVM patients in order to elucidate their molecular defects. By using this preferential exome, in fact, we have a complete view of sequence variants in the genes involved in the lysosomal-autophagic pathway. In conclusion, our strategy represents a powerful approach to study the role of lysosomes and autophagy in skeletal muscles and in muscular disorders. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
