The THINICE field campaign, based in Svalbard in August 2022, provided unique observations of summertime Arctic cyclones, their coupling with cloud cover, and their interactions with tropopause polar vortices and sea ice conditions. THINICE was motivated by the need to advance our understanding of these processes and to improve coupled models used to forecast weather and sea ice, as well as long-term projections of climate change in the Arctic. Two research aircraft were deployed with complementary instrumentation. The Service des Avions Frangais Instruments pour la Recherche en Environnement (Safire) Aerei da Trasporto Regionale 42 (ATR42) aircraft, equipped with the radar-lidar (RALI) remote sensing instrumentation and in situ cloud microphysics probes, flew in the midtroposphere to observe the wind and multiphase cloud structure of Arctic cyclones. The British Antarctic Survey Meteorological Airborne Science Instrumentation (MASIN) aircraft flew at low levels measuring sea ice properties, including surface brightness temperature, albedo and roughness, and the turbulent fluxes that mediate exchange of heat and momentum between the atmosphere and the surface. Long-duration instrumented balloons, operated by WindBorne Systems, sampled meteorological conditions within both cyclones and tropospheric polar vortices across the Arctic. Several novel findings are highlighted. Intense, shallow low-level jets along warm fronts were observed within three Arctic cyclones using the Doppler radar and turbulence probes. A detailed depiction of the interweaving layers of ice crystals and supercooled liquid water in mixed-phase clouds is revealed through the synergistic combination of the Doppler radar, the lidar, and in situ microphysical probes. Measurements of near-surface turbulent fluxes combined with remote sensing measurements of sea ice properties are being used to characterize atmosphere-sea ice interactions in the marginal ice zone. SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT: Arctic cyclones can span several thousand kilometers and last several weeks, bringing strong winds, clouds, and precipitation across the remote Arctic and affecting the sea ice through wind stress, surface energy budget, and snow cover. Therefore, they play a key role in Arctic weather and climate. Motivated by the need to improve the coupled environmental prediction, the representation of cyclones, and their influence on the rapidly changing Arctic climate, the THINICE field campaign intensively observed several Arctic cyclones in August 2022 by operating two aircraft and launching steerable balloons. Key measurements of fine-scale features within Arctic cyclones are highlighted including low-level jets along fronts, mixed-phase clouds containing multiple layers of supercooled water, boundary layer turbulent fluxes, and sea ice properties beneath the cyclones. The ability of state-of-the-art numerical models, with and without coupling to dynamic sea ice models, in representing these cases and coupled processes is the focus of the ongoing work with an aim to improve prediction capabilities. Abstract Pigment particles used in tattooing may exert long terms effect by releasing diffusible degradation products. In the present work, aqueous suspensions of the organic orange diazo pigment PO13 were aged by exposure to simulated sunlight at 40 °C. The morphology and the surface charge of PO13 particles were barely modified upon aging, but primary particles were released by de-agglomeration. Soluble photoproducts were detected in the liquid fractions. One of this photoproduct (DCBP) was produced in large amount in suspension in isopropanol and purified. The toxicological profiles of aged suspensions, their soluble fractions and DCBP were then determined on the keratinocyte cell line HaCaT. Impact of suspensions of PO13 on viability was hardly affected by aging. In contrast, the soluble fractions were more toxic after photo-aging. Suspensions and filtrates induced neither release of reactive oxygen species nor formation of DNA strand breaks. The samples exhibited only limited effects on the proteome of HaCaT cells. Conversely, DCBP was cytotoxic and induced the production of ROS, but was not genotoxic. DCBP was found to activate CYP450 monooxygenases known to be involved in the metabolism of xenobiotics. Altogether, our results show that aging of PO13 leads to the release of toxic soluble compounds.

Abstract The RNA-binding protein HuR regulates various cellular processes, such as proliferation, differentiation, and cell fate. Moreover, recent studies have shown that HuR modulates the expression of factors important for tumor growth and progression. Despite its prominent role in tumorigenesis, until recently, there have been no reported mutations in HuR that have been associated to cancer. Here, we show that a HuR mutation, HuR-V225I, previously identified in a patient with Adult T-cell Leukemia/Lymphoma, interferes with the pro-apoptotic function of HuR. In response to apoptosis, HuR translocates to the cytoplasm and is cleaved in a caspase-dependent manner. In cervical cancer cells, neuroblastoma cells, and T-lymphocytes, we observed a decrease in cleavage of the HuR-V225I mutant under apoptotic conditions. This effect was shown to be mediated by the nuclear retention of HuR-V225I. Finally, expression of the HuR-V225I mutant decreases the cell’s response to apoptotic stimuli through the increased expression of mRNAs encoding anti-apoptotic factors, such as XIAP and BCL-2. Therefore, our data establishes that the absence of HuR cytoplasmic translocation and cleavage promotes cell viability, and that acquiring this mutation during tumorigenesis may thus reduce the efficacy of cancer therapy.

The Eurasian grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) is one of the most extensively cultivated horticultural crop worldwide, with significant economic relevance, particularly in wine production. Accurate grapevine variety identification is essential for ensuring product authenticity, quality control, and regulatory compliance. Traditional identification methods have inherent limitations limitations; ampelography is subjective and dependent on skilled experts, while molecular analysis is costly and time-consuming. To address these challenges, recent research has focused on applying deep learning (DL) and machine learning (ML) techniques for grapevine variety identification. This study systematically analyses 37 recent studies that employed DL and ML models for this purpose. The objective is to provide a detailed analysis of classification pipelines, highlighting the strengths and limitations of each approach. Most studies use DL models trained on leaf images captured in controlled environments at distances of up to 1.2 m. However, these studies often fail to address practical challenges, such as the inclusion of a broader range of grapevine varieties, using data directly acquired in the vineyards, and the evaluation of models under adverse conditions. This review also suggests potential directions for advancing research in this field.

Abstract Drug addiction is a multifactorial syndrome in which genetic predispositions and exposure to environmental stressors constitute major risk factors for the early onset, escalation, and relapse of addictive behaviors. While it is well known that stress plays a key role in drug addiction, the genetic factors that make certain individuals particularly sensitive to stress and, thereby, more vulnerable to becoming addicted are unknown. In an effort to test a complex set of gene x environment interactions—specifically gene x chronic stress—here we leveraged a systems genetics resource: BXD recombinant inbred mice (BXD5, BXD8, BXD14, BXD22, BXD29, and BXD32) and their parental mouse lines, C57BL/6J and DBA/2J. Utilizing the chronic social defeat stress (CSDS) and chronic variable stress (CVS) paradigms, we first showed sexual dimorphism in social and exploratory behaviors between the mouse strains. Further, we observed an interaction between genetic background and vulnerability to prolonged exposure to non-social stressors. Finally, we found that DBA/2J and C57BL/6J mice pre-exposed to stress displayed differences in morphine sensitivity. Our results support the hypothesis that genetic variation influences chronic stress-induced behavioral outcomes such as social and approach-avoidance behaviors, reward responses, as well as morphine sensitivity, and is likely to modulate the development of drug addiction.

The Caste War in the Yucatan Peninsula, although of intermittent attacks, has been one of the longest social revolutions in Mexican history (1847-1901), whose conflict was the relationship of domination of the Creoles and mestizos over the Mayan population. Peninsula, Peninsula, by Hernán Lara Zavala offers, in the key of historiographical metafiction, the imaginary representation of the Caste War without any purpose of historical revisionism; on the contrary, the author distorts history and corrects, in a certain way, the mistreatment cruelty and humiliation of the native of the Yucatecan Peninsula under the subjugation of the whites. In this context, the novel of the Mexican author ‒as is the case with this type of novels that lo ok at themselves and also look to the past‒ seems to be a triumph of fiction over history. We approach Lara Zavala work from its metafictional and historical composition and propose a reading of the conflagration, based on some decolonizing theories, with all the decolonial intention: the rebellion of the Maya against the hegemony of the whites; however, in historical reality, such an intention was left with a failed effect.

Abstract Hemato-oncologic children form a heterogeneous group with a wide spectrum of ages, malignancy types, and immunosuppression grades during the different phases of their treatment. Immunosuppression is caused by multiple factors, including the malignancy itself, bone marrow suppression secondary to therapy, and wide use of steroids and antibiotics, among others. At the same time, the risk of infections in these patients remains high because of prolonged hospitalizations or the need for long-timing implanted devices between other features. In this context, a pulmonary fungal infection can rapidly turn into a life-threatening condition that requires early diagnosis and appropriate management. This pictorial essay illustrates the main imaging findings detected in chest computed tomography examinations performed in pediatric hemato-oncologic patients with proven pulmonary invasive fungal infections caused by Candida, Aspergillus, or Mucor. In addition, it describes useful clues for limiting differential diagnoses, reviews the literature on pediatric patients, and compares imaging findings in adults and children. Critical relevance statement The main fungal pathogens causing invasive fungal infections (IFI) in hemato-oncologic children are Candida, Aspergillus, and Mucor. This review describes the most frequently affected organs and the most common imaging findings detected in chest CT exams in children with pulmonary IFI. Abstract Background Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a rare hereditary bone disease resulting from a defect in collagen synthesis or processing, leading to bone fragility, frequent fractures and skeletal deformities. OI is associated with increased respiratory morbidity and mortality, but the mechanisms of lung involvement are poorly understood, and there are no data on the natural history of lung function. We studied lung function over time in a cohort of adult OI patients at one center. Methods We used data from OI patients aged 15 and above followed up at the Lausanne university hospital between 2012 and 2023 with available pre-bronchodilator spirometry. Associations between spirometric measurements at first visit and clinical characteristics were studied through linear regression. Changes of spirometric variables over time were analysed through mixed linear regression. Models were adjusted for age, sex, height and OI type (Sillence classification). Results Among 46 subjects, 24% had impaired spirometry at baseline, with similar distribution between restrictive (8.7%), obstructive (8.7%) and mixed (6.5%) ventilatory patterns. At first visit, higher age was associated with lower FEV1 (β = −0.019 l, p = 0.014) and lower FEV1/FVC (β = −0.175%, p = 0.012). A history of asthma was associated with higher FEV1 (β = 0.636 l, p = 0.028) and FVC (β = 0.834 l, p = 0.010). At first visit, FEV1 (β = −0.750 l, p = 0.006) and FVC (β = −0.859 l, p = 0.004) was lower in individuals with OI Sillence types 3, 4 or 5 compared to type 1. Over a mean follow-up of 3.4 years, smokers had a greater decline of FEV1/FVC compared to non-smokers (β = −6.592%, p = 0.007). Individuals with a mutation in the gene COL1A2 had 740 ml lower FVC compared to those with a mutation in COL1A1 (p = 0.037). After adjustment for sex, age, height and OI type, FEV1 increased by 26 ml (95% CI 8; 45) or 1.28%pred (0.51; 2.05) and FVC increased by 25 ml (95% CI 8; 43) or 0.93%pred (0.31; 1.55) per year of follow-up. Conclusions An increase of FEV1 and FVC over time was observed in OI patients after adjustment for other variables, suggesting that the defective collagen synthesis may impact the pulmonary interstitium and lead to increased lung compliance and hyperinflation, in contrast to skeletal deformities, which reduce the thoracic volume. Lung function changes in OI thus result from the interplay of several mechanisms.

Abstract Wolverine distribution contracted along the southern periphery of its range in North America during the 19th and 20th centuries due primarily to human influences. This history, along with low densities, sensitivity to climate change, and concerns about connectivity among fragmented habitats spurred the recent US federal listing of threatened status and special concern status in Canada. To help inform large scale landscape connectivity, we collected 882 genetic samples genotyped at 19 microsatellite loci. We employed multiple statistical models to assess the landscape factors (terrain complexity, human disturbance, forest configuration, and climate) associated with wolverine genetic connectivity across 2.2 million km2 of southwestern Canada and the northwestern contiguous United States. Genetic similarity (positive spatial autocorrelation) of wolverines was detected up to 555 km and a high-to-low gradient of genetic diversity occurred from north-to-south. Landscape genetics analyses confirmed that wolverine genetic connectivity has been negatively influenced by human disturbance at broad scales and positively influenced by forest cover and snow persistence at fine- and broad–scales, respectively. This information applied across large landscapes can be used to guide management actions with the goal of maintaining or restoring population connectivity.

* Context.--Respiratory infections complicate lung transplantation and increase the risk of allograft dysfunction. Allograft lungs may have different susceptibilities to infection than native lungs, potentially leading to different disease severity in lungs of single lung transplant recipients (SLTRs). Objective.--To study whether infections affect allograft and native lungs differently in SLTRs but similarly in double LTRs (DLTRs). Design.--Using an institutional database of LTRs, medical records were searched, chest computed tomography studies were systematically reviewed, and histopathologic features were recorded per lung lobe and graded semiquantitatively. A multilobar-histopathology score (MLHS) including histopathologic data from each lung and a bilateral ratio ([MLHS.sub.ratio]) comparing histopathologies between both lungs were calculated in SLTRs and compared to DLTRs. Results.--Six SLTRs died of infection involving the lungs. All allografts showed multifocal histopathologic evidence of infection, but at least 1 lobe of the native lung was uninvolved. In 4 of 5 DLTRs, histopathologic evidence of infection was seen in all lung lobes. On computed tomography, multifocal ground-glass and/or nodular opacities were found in a bilateral distribution in all DLTRs but in only 2 of 6 SLTRs. In SLTRs, the [MLHS.sub.Allograft] was higher than [MLHS.sub.Native] (P = .02). The [MLHS.sub.ratio] values of SLTR and DLTR were significantly different (P < .001). Conclusions.--Allograft and native lungs appear to harbor different susceptibilities to infections. Abstract Objectives Recent advances in bio-inspired navigation have sparked interest in the phenomenon of skylight polarization. This interest stems from the potential of skylight-based orientation sensors, which performance can be simulated using physical models. However, the effectiveness of machine learning algorithms in this domain relies heavily on access to large datasets for training. Although there are several databases of simulated images in literature, there remains a lack of publicly available annotated real-world color polarimetric images of the sky across various weather conditions. Data description We present here a dataset obtained from a long-term experimental setup designed to collect polarimetric images from a stand-alone camera. The setup utilizes a Division-of-Focal-Plane polarization camera equipped with a fisheye lens mounted on a rotative telescope mount. Furthermore, we obtained the sensor’s orientation within the East-North-Up (ENU) frame from a geometrical calibration and an algorithm provided with the database. To facilitate further research in this area, the present sample dataset spanning two months has been made available on a public archive with manual annotations as required by deep learning algorithms. The images were acquired at 10 min intervals and were taken with various exposure times ranging from 33µs to 300ms.

Abstract Objective Robotic surgical approaches are increasingly utilized; however, standard medical school curricula omit this topic. This study examines the need for robotic-specific surgical education from the medical students' perspective. Design A 10-question web-based survey was designed to assess factors including class year, intended specialty, exposure to robotic surgery, and perceived necessity for robotic surgery education. The survey was validated by small group of surgical residents. Setting This study was conducted at a busy tertiary academic center. Participants Survey was distributed to 425 post-core clerkship medical students. Results Out of 79 respondents (18.5% response rate), 71% had some exposure to robotic surgery. The majority (72%) of respondents, regardless of their intended specialty, agreed on the necessity to learn about robotic surgery. Respondents identified terminology, proper patient counseling, and bedside assisting skills as potential topics to incorporate in robotic surgery medical school curricula. Conclusions Medical students irrespective of their intended specialty favor robotic surgery specific education. These findings underscore the need to incorporate robotics education into core medical school curricula.

Abstract Background Workplace-based assessment (WBA) can facilitate evaluation of operative performance; however, implementation of WBA is sometimes unsuccessful. The American Board of Surgery Entrustable Professional Activities WBA project was launched in July 2023. Some programs will face the challenge of re-implementation of a WBA following previous failures. It is unknown what interventions are most effective for WBA re-implementation. Our goal is to identify barriers and facilitators to re-implementing SIMPL, an operative performance WBA. Methods The System for Improving and Measuring Procedural Learning (SIMPL) was implemented at our residency in 2018, but usage rates were low. We interviewed residents and faculty to identify barriers to usage and opportunities for improvement. Residents reported that SIMPL usage declined because of several factors, including a low faculty response rate, while some faculty reported not responding because they were unable to login to the app and because usage was not mandated. We then re-implemented SIMPL using a plan based on Kotter’s Model of Change. To evaluate impact, we analyzed rates of SIMPL usage when it was first implemented, as well as before and after the date of re-implementation. Results In September 2022, we re-implemented SIMPL at our program with measures addressing the identified barriers. We found that, in the six months after re-implementation, an average of 145.8 evaluations were submitted by residents per month, compared with 47 evaluations per month at the start of the original implementation and 5.8 evaluations per month just prior to re-implementation. Faculty completed 60.6% of evaluations and dictated feedback for 59.1% of these evaluations, compared with 69.1% at implementation (44% dictated) and 43% prior to re-implementation (53% dictated). Conclusions After identifying barriers to implementation of a WBA, we re-implemented it with significantly higher usage by faculty and residents. Future opportunities exist to implement or re-implement assessment tools within general surgery programs. These opportunities may have a significant impact in the setting of national standardization of workplace-based assessment among general surgery residencies.

Abstract Volcanic eruptions necessitate precise monitoring of magma pressure and inflation for improved forecasting. Understanding deep magma storage is crucial for hazard assessment, yet imaging these systems is challenging due to complex heterogeneities that disrupt standard seismic migration techniques. Here we map the magmatic and hydrothermal system of the La Soufrière volcano in Guadeloupe by analyzing seismic noise data from a sparse geophone array under a matrix formalism. Seismic noise interferometry provides a reflection matrix containing the signature of echoes from deep heterogeneities. Using wave correlations resistant to disorder, matrix imaging successfully unscrambles wave distortions, revealing La Soufrière’s internal structure down to 10 km with 100 m resolution. This method surpasses the diffraction limit imposed by geophone array aperture, providing crucial data for modeling and high-resolution monitoring. We see matrix imaging as a revolutionary tool for understanding volcanic systems and enhancing observatories’ abilities to monitor dynamics and forecast eruptions.

This study describes the relationships between different physiological measurements and combinations of critical velocity and performance in elite open-water swimmers. A total of 15 international male open-water swimmers performed a 5 × 200 m front crawl incremental test to estimate maximal aerobic speed (MAS), maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max), the first lactate threshold (VLT1), the second lactate threshold (VLT2), the speed corresponding to 2 mmol/L (V2mmol/L) and to 4 mmol/L (V4mmol/L), and the lactate threshold (VDmax). A 10 km pool trial was also performed to assess swimming performance. Official competition performances in 200, 400, 800, and 1500 m events were collected and were also used to calculate critical velocity (CV) with various combinations of distances. Personal best performances in 1500 m events were 941.76 ± 20.28 s. For the 10 km trial, performance was strongly correlated to VLT1 and moderately to V2mmol/L (r = 0.73 and 0.67, respectively). For the 400, 800, and 1500 m events, strong correlations were observed for V2mmol/L and V4mmol/L. Moderate correlations with these events were also observed for VLT1 and for VDmax (400 and 800 m only). For long-distance swimmers, assessment with a fixed blood lactate value seems to be a good option to estimate swimming performance in distance events. In addition, 10 km performance seems to be more related to the aerobic threshold than the anaerobic threshold.

Abstract Background Colorectal cancer (CRC) risk is strongly affected by dietary habits with red and processed meat increasing risk, and foods rich in dietary fibres considered protective. Dietary habits also shape gut microbiota, but the role of the combination between diet, the gut microbiota, and the metabolite profile on CRC risk is still missing an unequivocal characterisation. Methods To investigate how gut microbiota affects diet-associated CRC risk, we fed Apc-mutated PIRC rats and azoxymethane (AOM)-induced rats the following diets: a high-risk red/processed meat-based diet (MBD), a normalised risk diet (MBD with α-tocopherol, MBDT), a low-risk pesco-vegetarian diet (PVD), and control diet. We then conducted faecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) from PIRC rats to germ-free rats treated with AOM and fed a standard diet for 3 months. We analysed multiple tumour markers and assessed the variations in the faecal microbiota using 16S rRNA gene sequencing together with targeted- and untargeted-metabolomics analyses. Results In both animal models, the PVD group exhibited significantly lower colon tumorigenesis than the MBD ones, consistent with various CRC biomarkers. Faecal microbiota and its metabolites also revealed significant diet-dependent profiles. Intriguingly, when faeces from PIRC rats fed these diets were transplanted into germ-free rats, those transplanted with MBD faeces developed a higher number of preneoplastic lesions together with distinctive diet-related bacterial and metabolic profiles. PVD determines a selection of nine taxonomic markers mainly belonging to Lachnospiraceae and Prevotellaceae families exclusively associated with at least two different animal models, and within these, four taxonomic markers were shared across all the three animal models. An inverse correlation between nonconjugated bile acids and bacterial genera mainly belonging to the Lachnospiraceae and Prevotellaceae families (representative of the PVD group) was present, suggesting a potential mechanism of action for the protective effect of these genera against CRC. Conclusions These results highlight the protective effects of PVD while reaffirming the carcinogenic properties of MBD diets. In germ-free rats, FMT induced changes reminiscent of dietary effects, including heightened preneoplastic lesions in MBD rats and the transmission of specific diet-related bacterial and metabolic profiles. Importantly, to the best of our knowledge, this is the first study showing that diet-associated cancer risk can be transferred with faeces, establishing gut microbiota as a determinant of diet-associated CRC risk. Therefore, this study marks the pioneering demonstration of faecal transfer as a means of conveying diet-related cancer risk, firmly establishing the gut microbiota as a pivotal factor in diet-associated CRC susceptibility. Abstract As light travels through a disordered medium such as biological tissues, it undergoes multiple scattering events. This phenomenon is detrimental to in-depth optical microscopy, as it causes a drastic degradation of contrast, resolution and brightness of the resulting image beyond a few scattering mean free paths. However, the information about the inner reflectivity of the sample is not lost; only scrambled. To recover this information, a matrix approach of optical imaging can be fruitful. Here, we report on a de-scanned measurement of a high-dimension reflection matrix R via low coherence interferometry. Then, we show how a set of independent focusing laws can be extracted for each medium voxel through an iterative multi-scale analysis of wave distortions contained in R. It enables an optimal and local compensation of forward multiple scattering paths and provides a three-dimensional confocal image of the sample as the latter one had become digitally transparent. The proof-of-concept experiment is performed on a human opaque cornea and an extension of the penetration depth by a factor five is demonstrated compared to the state-of-the-art.

Global warming is amplified in the Arctic. However, numerical models struggle to represent key processes that determine Arctic weather and climate. To collect data that help to constrain the models, the HALO–(𝒜𝒞)3 aircraft campaign was conducted over the Norwegian and Greenland seas, the Fram Strait, and the central Arctic Ocean in March and April 2022. The campaign focused on one specific challenge posed by the models, namely the reasonable representation of transformations of air masses during their meridional transport into and out of the Arctic via northward moist- and warm-air intrusions (WAIs) and southward marine cold-air outbreaks (CAOs). Observations were made over areas of open ocean, the marginal sea ice zone, and the central Arctic sea ice. Two low-flying and one long-range, high-altitude research aircraft were flown in colocated formation whenever possible. To follow the air mass transformations, a quasi-Lagrangian flight strategy using trajectory calculations was realized, enabling us to sample the same moving-air parcels twice along their trajectories. Seven distinct WAI and 12 CAO cases were probed. From the quasi-Lagrangian measurements, we have quantified the diabatic heating/cooling and moistening/drying of the transported air masses. During CAOs, maximum values of 3 K h−1 warming and 0.3 g kg−1 h−1 moistening were obtained below 1 km altitude. From the observations of WAIs, diabatic cooling rates of up to 0.4 K h−1 and a moisture loss of up to 0.1 g kg−1 h−1 from the ground to about 5.5 km altitude were derived. Furthermore, the development of cloud macrophysical (cloud-top height and horizontal cloud cover) and microphysical (liquid water path, precipitation, and ice index) properties along the southward pathways of the air masses were documented during CAOs, and the moisture budget during a specific WAI event was estimated. In addition, we discuss the statistical frequency of occurrence of the different thermodynamic phases of Arctic low-level clouds, the interaction of Arctic cirrus clouds with sea ice and water vapor, and the characteristics of microphysical and chemical properties of Arctic aerosol particles. Finally, we provide a proof of concept to measure mesoscale divergence and subsidence in the Arctic using data from dropsondes released during the flights.

Background: Bereavement support is considered a core standard of care for paediatric palliative care (PPC) teams. Support for grieving siblings can present unique challenges. Developmentally appropriate care can help children navigate their grief experience. Objectives: To describe the provider perspectives (mission and development) of bereavement care for siblings, and to describe the bereavement follow-up interventions offered for siblings by hospital-based PPC teams nationwide. Design and methods: Qualitative study conducted by semidirected telephone interviews. At least one member from each PPC team was interviewed. Interviews transcribed verbatim were analysed using grounded theory. Results: Twenty-one teams participated (response rate 91%). Most teams (80%) provided individual psychotherapy to families, and a few (28%) offered group interventions. PPC teams endeavour to expand their bereavement services and create a stronger collaboration network with community services. However, limited human resources, lack of facilities and financing, and geographical distances were frequent obstacles to bereavement care program development. Conclusion: PPC teams support bereaved siblings as an integral part of palliative care. Although PPC teams cannot meet all the needs of bereaved families, they can serve as important reference points to consolidate knowledge of available local resources and offer well-informed guidance to families and community users. Greater public awareness of childhood bereavement and engaging with community structures could help overcome some of the common obstacles to service development. Further studies are warranted in evaluating bereavement services in France and in other healthcare systems.
