Changing climate patterns represent a major challenge for Hungarian municipalities, particularly with regard to the increasing severity and frequency of heatwaves. As a result of the COVID-19 lockdowns, thousands of people moved to communities around Lake Balaton; therefore, cities and villages should place more emphasis on their long-term sustainability and climate resilience. This article addresses the literature gap in assessing the heatwave resilience of Hungarian settlements, focusing on the municipalities of the Lake Balaton Resort Area. Our main objective was to uncover spatial and temporal patterns in the 180 settlements involved in the analysis by using an indicator-based comparative method. The set of indicators included nine sensitivity and six adaptive capacity measures referring to the base years 2015 and 2022. Our results show heterogeneous spatial patterns across the analysed categories; however, several regional clusters can be identified: 1) in general, settlements from the northern part of the study area had above-average adaptive capacity, while the southern and south-western municipalities had significantly lower values, 2) only one micro-regional cluster can be defined in terms of sensitivity values in the northern part of the study area; 3) below average resilience values were found in the south-western and southern areas; 4) finally, neither sensitivity nor adaptive capacity nor overall resilience scores had changed significantly over time at the regional level. The applied methodology can easily be adopted in other Hungarian or even Central and Eastern European cities; consequently, new results can contribute to a better understanding of inter- and intra-regional patterns of heatwave resilience at the local level.

Abstract This study takes a unique approach to analyzing the sustainability and climate planning in major Hungarian cities. It conducts a qualitative analysis, examining the selected cities' sustainability and climate strategy objectives/goals. The aim is to comprehensively assess the extent of harmony between these objectives and identify potential hindering factors. An impact series with six distinct levels (+ + , + , 0, NR, −, –) was established for this analysis, from which positive (+ + , +), neutral (0, NR), and negative (−,–) categories were formulated. The main result of the study presents the efficiency score of the sustainability and climate goals, in which only the ratio of the positive impacts are covered. The findings reveal that the impacts of sustainability objectives show significant differences among the cities, particularly concerning positive and neutral effects. However, climate objectives present a more modest discrepancy regarding positive, neutral, and negative effects observed among the cities. There was no clear regional pattern in terms of sustainability and climate planning efficiency; on the other hand, Budapest, Győr, and Nyíregyháza emerged with outstanding performances.

Abstract Defining and measuring progress in adaptation are important questions for climate adaptation science, policy, and practice. Here, we assess the progress of urban adaptation planning in 327 European cities between 2005 and 2020 using three ‘ADAptation plan Quality Assessment’ indices, called ADAQA-1/ 2/ 3, that combine six plan quality principles. Half of the cities have an adaptation plan and its quality significantly increased over time. However, generally, plan quality is still low in many cities. Participation and monitoring and evaluation are particularly weak aspects in urban adaptation policy, together with plan ‘consistency’. Consistency connects impacts and vulnerabilities with adaptation goals, planned measures, actions, monitoring and evaluation, and participation processes. Consistency is a key factor in the overall quality of plans. To help evaluate the quality of plans and policies and promote learning, we suggest incorporating our ADAptation plan Quality Assessment indices into the portfolio of adaptation progress assessments and tracking methodologies.

Increased solar radiation during solar flare events can cause additional ionization and enhanced absorption of the electromagnetic (EM) waves in the ionosphere leading to partial or even total radio fade-outs. In this study, the ionospheric response to large solar flares has been investigated using the ionosonde data from Juliusruh (54.63° N, 13.37° E), Průhonice (49.98° N, 14.55° E) and San Vito (40.6° N, 17.8° E) Digisonde (DPS-4D) stations. We studied the effect of 13 intense (>C4.8) solar flares that occurred between 06:00 and 16:30 (UT, daytime LT = UT+1 h) from 04 to 10 September 2017 using three different methods. A novel method based on the amplitude data of the measured EM waves is used to calculate and investigate the relative absorption changes (compared to quiet period) occurring during the flares. The amplitude data are compared with the variation of the fmin parameter (fmin, the minimum measured frequency, it is considered as a qualitative proxy for the “non-deviative” radio wave absorption). Furthermore, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) measured by the Digisondes was used as well to quantify and characterize the fade-out events and the ionospheric absorption. In order to compare the three different methods, residuals have been defined for all parameters, which provide the percentage changes compared to the selected reference periods. Total and partial radio fade-outs, increased values (+0.4%–318%) of the fmin parameter, and +20%–1400% amplitude changes (measured at 2.5 and 4 MHz) were experienced during and after the investigated flares. Generally, the observed changes depended on the intensity, solar zenith angle and duration of the flare events. Although the three different methods have their own advantages/disadvantages and their limitations, the combination of them seems to be an efficient approach to monitor the ionospheric response to solar flares.

The paper reports for the first time the heat and particle exhaust at the plasma boundary through various edge diagnostics for the high-performance plasma obtained after pellet injection on Wendelstein 7-X. The plasma density at the edge is found to be reduced by a factor of 2 in the high-performance phase, supporting the previously reported density peaking at the plasma centre. The plasma beta effect on the magnetic topology is reflected by the appearance of the second strike line, which is well understood with simulation. However, during the rapid decay phase of the enhanced confinement, a transient localized heat flow of up to 16 MW m ^−2 is observed at the leading edge of a poorly cooled divertor component, which has not been understood but raises concerns about machine safety.

A support laboratory has been set up to study pellet production, launch and shattering of cryogenic protium, deuterium, and neon pellets for the ITER disruption mitigation system, which plans to use 28.5 × 57 mm (diameter × length) protium, neon an mixture pellets in the Shattered Pellet Injectors. Such large protium pellets have not been produced and launched before, therefore the desublimation and launch process have been studied in detail in two steps. First 19 mm diameter pellets were produced, followed by the demonstration of the final pellet size. Pellet desublimation recipes were established for all pellet types, and it was found that, under certain conditions, even the large neon pellets can be launched with a propellant gas pulse, without requiring a mechanical punch device. This is attributed to cryogenic snow formation on the surface of the pellet. Conditions for the snow formation are studied and tendencies are understood using simple calculations.

Increasing heatwaves are making cities and their populations more vulnerable, parallel to urban sprawl and the aging population in Hungary. The increasing number of hot days is predicted to worsen urban climate anomalies at the local scale, which, in parallel with changing land use patterns, may contribute to a significant increase in vulnerability to heatwaves. Local stakeholders and decision-makers need to understand the critical role of spatiotemporal land use—land cover (LULC) patterns and urban climate aspects to address relevant challenges for urban development. The current literature does not contain a synthesis analysis of major Hungarian cities that includes urban climate and sustainability findings hand by hand; therefore, this study aims to analyze LULC patterns, urban hotspots and surface urban heat island effects. In addition, the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) was determined as an important indicator for assessing the health and density of green spaces in major Hungarian cities from 2006 to 2018 using remote sensing data. Our results show that each city experienced significant urban sprawl, while above-average NDVI areas decreased over time. The average increase in the share of built-up areas was 1.3% from 2006 to 2018, while the calculated average decline in agricultural areas was 2%, so the expansion of residential areas and artificial areas is not the only driving force of this shrinking trend in agricultural areas. Furthermore, we found that urban hotspots are generally concentrated in industrial areas and represent new spaces of heat islands on the outskirts of cities. Székesfehérvár has the most intense industrial heat islands, with the largest proportion of urban hotspots (approximately 3.5% of the total area) concentrated in industrial zones. Our study contributes to uncovering inter-urban processes of land use patterns and urban climate issues in major Hungarian cities, moreover revealing sustainability-related issues from a lock-in perspective.

Urban sustainability and urban resilience are at the forefront of current urban studies since cities play a crucial role in sustainability and climate-related transformations. Hungarian cities face almost the same challenges regarding climate change as their European counterparts; however, their considerable socio-economic sensitivity makes them highly vulnerable. This study aims to comparatively analyze urban sustainability and heatwave vulnerability in the case of Hungarian cities by applying a mixed approach - min–max feature scaling and fuzzy method. In order to reveal the hidden relationships between the highly interconnected aspects of sustainability and vulnerability dimensions, min–max feature scaling and fuzzy logic have been applied. The selected set of indicators encompasses statistical data regarding socio-economic aspects, moreover as relevant climate change and environmental issues, namely heatwave duration predictions and imperviousness density. The applied fuzzy logic approach reveals interdependencies between the analyzed aspects and maps spatial characteristics regarding the evaluated cities. Applying the min–max feature scaling method shows high sustainability scores regarding Budapest and Western regions, while overall vulnerability performances were lower in cities from less developed regions. However, the applied fuzzy methodology contributes to defining more homogenous performances by distinguishing only two sustainability categories and reducing variability in the case of heatwave vulnerability.

Wine producers face several challenges regarding climate change, which will affect this industry both in the present and the future. Vulnerability assessments are at the forefront of current climate research, therefore, the present paper has two main aims. First, to assess two components of climate vulnerability regarding the Szekszárd wine region, Hungary; second, to collect and analyze adaptation farming techniques in terms of environmental sustainability aspects. Exposure analyses revealed that the study area will face several challenges regarding intensive drought periods in the future. Sensitivity indicators show the climate-related characteristics of the most popular grapevines and their relatively high level of susceptibility regarding changing climatic patterns. Since both external and intrinsic factors of vulnerability show deteriorating trends, the development of adaptation actions is needed. Adaptation interventions often provide unsustainable solutions or entail maladaptation issues, therefore, an environmental-focused sustainability assessment of collected interventions was performed to avoid long-term negative path dependencies. The applied evaluation methodology pointed out that nature-based adaptation actions are preferred in comparison to using additional machines or resource-intensive solutions. This study can fill the scientific gap by analyzing this wine region for the first time, via performing an ex-ante lock-in analysis of available and widely used adaptation interventions in the viticulture sector.

Main streets play pivotal role in urban areas in terms of economic, social, moreover environmental contexts. Such streets are generally situated in densely built-up areas, where the adverse effects of climate change, such as rising temperature and changing precipitation patterns occur emphatically. Increasing urban heat island effect or extreme amount of runoff water during severe storms and floods significantly decrease the adaptive capacity of a city, consequently its residents becoming more vulnerable. Therefore involving climate-oriented design principles into planning and construction phase contributes to reach more sustainable and climate-friendly open spaces what are strongly relevant especially in main streets which are designed for a great amount of people. Present study provides a criteria matrix for assessing the climate-friendly level of recently renewed main streets in Budapest. Due to this assessment tool the adaptation and mitigation performance of the selected projects can be evaluated. For identifying strengths and weaknesses of a given project, a rating scheme has been applied by selecting and using 42 indicators grouped into mitigation, adaptation and awareness raising categories. Thus planners, decision-makers and other stakeholders can easily define future opportunities and challenges, accordingly this study may contribute to take urban street design practices toward climate-friendliness by paying more attention on changing local weather patterns and related consequences.
