Статтю присвячено висвітленню ролі Костянтина Шишкіна в розвитку радянської археологічної науки. Приділено увагу труднощам сприйняття офіційними археологами численних відкриттів, зроблених завдяки дешифруванню аерофотозйомки. Розроблена цим дослідником методика виявлення археологічних пам’яток актуальна до нинішнього часу і значною мірою може бути доповнена даними супутникових знімків. Ім’я К. Шишкіна нерозривно пов’язане з відкриттям протоміст трипільської культури. Завдяки аналізу статей та архівних матеріалів було з’ясовано, що дослідник мав величезні напрацювання по виявленню пам’яток степових регіонів України. Однак ці матеріали поки не доступні для широкого кола дослідників. The article is devoted to highlighting the role of Kostiantyn Shyshkin in the development of Soviet archaeological science. Attention is paid to the difficulties of perception by official archaeologists of numerous discoveries made thanks to the deciphering of aerial photography. The method of identifying archaeological monuments developed by this researcher is relevant to the present time and can be supplemented to a large extent by satellite image data. The name of K. Shyshkin is inextricably linked with the discovery of the proto cities of the Trypllia culture. Thanks to the analysis of articles and archival materials, it was found that the researcher had a great deal of experience in discovering monuments of the steppe regions of Ukraine. However, these materials are not yet available to a wide range of researchers

Повідомлення описує досвід та практики збору просторових даних у процесі археологічних оглядів та об-стежень, їх обробки, збереження та використання. Ці процедури ґрунтуються на багаторічних розвідкових роботах авторів. Виділяється декілька стадій опрацювання просторових даних. Важливим питанням, що вини-кає під час таких робіт є проблема збереження просторової інформації та її уніфікації. Автори вказують на необхідність зміни формату збереження просторових даних, їх менеджменту та стандартизації. Також акце-нтовано увагу на потребі активізації роботи зі створення національної археологічної карти. The article should describe the practices of spatial data collection in the process of archaeological surveys and surveys, its processing, preservation and use. These procedures are based on the experience of many years of intelligence work of the authors. An important issue that arises during such works is the problem of preserving spatial data and its standardization. The authors indicate the need to change the format of spatial data storage and the need for their management. The text indicates the need to standardize archaeological spatial data. The authors support the need to intensify work on the creation of a national archaeological map

An interdisciplinary study of the ancient landscape of the Trieste Karst (north-eastern Italy) is presented in this paper. Airborne Laser Scanning (ALS) has been applied to obtain high-resolution topography of the 25 km2 investigated area in order to identify potential archaeological anomalies. The ALS-derived high-resolution Digital Terrain Models have been visualized and managed using QGIS and Relief Visualization Toolbox. Possible archaeological anomalies have been verified through field surveys and interpreted using a multidisciplinary approach mainly based on the collection of associated archaeological materials and geomorphological and stratigraphic evidence. From a methodological perspective, the elaboration and study of ALS-derived images, and in particular the local relief model visualization, combined with the collection of Roman shoe hobnails, have proven to be effective approaches for the certain identification and dating of Roman roads in karst environments. The obtained results have revealed an almost completely unknown Roman landscape: the investigated area was crossed by important public roads, whose layout has been accurately reconstructed for a total length of over 10 km, and occupied by large country estates, sometimes enclosed within boundary walls perfectly fitting the Roman land division grid. One of the identified buildings could correspond to a road station, perhaps the Avesica known from ancient itinerary documents—i.e., the itinerarium Antonini Augusti—due to its position and proximity to a major road junction. This article, based on the master’s thesis of the first author, aims to identify and classify by species different shellfish collected in a Vanuatu archaeological site. We want to analyse how these shells have been modified and utilized to produce furniture and artefacts. The results show that the Punangatu shell assemblage is dominated by Gastropods, in particular by the families of Turbnidae and Trochidae, which were easy and accessible to exploit. The two families are still consumed today. But the share of shellfish and the importance of fishing during the island’s initial settlement and over time remains unclear. It would be necessary in the future to study other sites of the island to better understand the societal role of marine resources.

The work deals with the publication of a rare bronze plaque discovered during the archaeological surveys of 2012–2013 in the upper reaches of the Kacha river in South-Western Crimea. The item was crafted by means of casting in a rigid die, and represents a four-petal plate with a loop soldered to the lower petal. The front surface features an image of a polymorphic creature – a dragon, and the back surface contains traces of solder with the remains of the bases of pins or stitch loops. It is assumed that the plate is a part of a military belt set of the Golden Horde period. These types of ferrules and plates with a dragon image made of precious metals, as well as bronze, horn and bone, have been found in the territory of the Golden Horde and the neighbouring territories and date back to the period of the 13th – 14th centuries. The stylistics of the mythical animal image on the plate from the vicinity of Verkhorechye accounts for its similarity to the images of dog-headed dragons in the fine art of Russian regions, but the design and construction features of our finding are characteristic of the items discovered in the Volga region.

An interdisciplinary study of the archaeological landscape of the Trieste area (northeastern Italy), mainly based on airborne light detection and ranging (LiDAR), ground penetrating radar (GPR), and archaeological surveys, has led to the discovery of an early Roman fortification system, composed of a big central camp (San Rocco) flanked by two minor forts. The most ancient archaeological findings, including a Greco-Italic amphora rim produced in Latium or Campania, provide a relative chronology for the first installation of the structures between the end of the third century B.C. and the first decades of the second century B.C. whereas other materials, such as Lamboglia 2 amphorae and a military footwear hobnail (type D of Alesia), indicate that they maintained a strategic role at least up to the mid first century B.C. According to archaeological data and literary sources, the siteswere probably established in connection with the Roman conquest of the Istria peninsula in 178-177 B.C. They were in use, perhaps not continuously, at least until the foundation of Tergeste, the ancestor of Trieste, in the mid first century B.C. The San Rocco site, with its exceptional size and imposing fortifications, is the main known Roman evidence of the Trieste area during this phase and could correspond to the location of the first settlement of Tergeste preceding the colony foundation. This hypothesis would also be supported by literary sources that describe it as a phrourion (Strabo, V, 1, 9, C 215), a term used by ancient writers to designate the fortifications of the Roman army. High-resolution subsurface imaging and topography estimation in deserts is very useful in many applications such as oil-field and ground-water explorations and archaeological surveys. To address this problem, we previously developed a subsurface imaging interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) concept that can estimate the subsurface topography. However, the image resolution of such a system is rather limited by the current techniques available for SAR focusing and InSAR image coregistration as the propagation effects and phase-front distortion caused by the top layer are not accounted for. In this paper, we discuss different image aberrations that result from the top-surface topography, including geometric and defocusing distortion. The issue created by subsurface caustics and their effect on SAR imaging are discussed. We then present a new approach to estimating and correcting such aberrations. By using simulations and measurements, it is shown that up to an order of magnitude improvement in the subsurface image resolution as well as significant improvement on subsurface interferogram coherence can be achieved. The proposed approach is based on the application of a previously developed subsurface inversion algorithm and a newly developed fast subsurface InSAR simulator. The results are verified numerically using 3-D simulations of different sand-dune geometries and an experiment using scaled-model measurements under laboratory conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper intends to present the historical and archaeological background of the Praça do Infante, located in the parish of S. Nicolau, Porto, based on elements provided by the construction of an underground car park. This square is part of the urban area of Porto's historical zone, in which the coordination of the works of geophysical prospecting with archaeological ones was considered relevant. Thus, the former determined the location of the archaeological surveys, which, once completed, revealed a settlement sequence going from the 17th century to the 20th century, despite material remains dating back to Roman times. Today, this square is a mere flicker of the commercial and human bustle which the material memories cannot glorify. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

On the basis of archeological data presented in Finkelstein 2008, 8–13, it is concluded that the settlements of returnees listed in Ezra 2:20–30 and Nehemiah 7:25–33 reflect an actual socio-political reality of the late 6th century BCE. As Finkelstein draws the opposite conclusion on the basis of the same data, this study describes how he construed relevant data and evaluates the validity of his argumentation. Additionally, locations are proposed for some heretofore unidentified settlements, the complex literary history of the lists is examined, and how the vague term 'Persian Period' has confused both archaeological and historical discourses is explored.
