Abstract

The authors developed an instructional nudges as part of a larger research project. These instructional nudges are designed to be small but powerful changes to teachers' existing practices. Some instructional nudges focus on modifying tasks used in classrooms. In this article, the authors share Rate and Review. The goal of Rate and Review is to support students in understanding that there are alternative solution strategies to what they might be used to using, provide students the opportunity to become more comfortable creating mathematical arguments, and develop a deeper understanding of a concept. Rate and Review provides formative assessment for teachers by supporting their reflections on students' understanding of current content and how students are making sense of common errors.

2. Carbon Neutrality in Andean Universities: The Centrality of Context in Comparative Analysis of Assessment, Opportunities and Obstacles

Abstract

Purpose: This paper aims to analyze the influences of context and methodological differences in how universities confront, report and manage carbon neutrality in selected Andean universities, contrasted with a university in the USA. Design/methodology/approach: A sequential, mixed-methods design, using quantitative and qualitative approaches was applied. The data analysis is based on a systematic literature review with bibliometric analysis to identify how carbon neutrality in universities is understood and applied. Informed by the quantitative analysis, the qualitative phase compared the assessment methodologies, opportunities and obstacles in three Andean universities -- EAFIT in Colombia, EPN in Ecuador and the UC in Chile -- contrasted with MIT (USA) for comparative purposes beyond the region. Findings: The bibliometric analysis points to the evolution of carbon management and carbon neutrality in universities and indicates how universities have applied methodologies and defined opportunities and obstacles. In this comparative experience, the contextual issues are brought to the fore. The conclusions highlight the importance of context in carbon neutrality assessment and argue against crude comparative metrics. While carbon assessment protocols provide data on which actions may be taken, the phase of carbon management development and the specifics of context -- based on local institutional, geographical, climatic, cultural, socioeconomic and national policy conditions -- are far more relevant for identifying actions. Research limitations/implications: This study only considered four universities, and the findings are not generalizable. The argument highlights the point that contextual factors generate important differences that may complicate simple comparisons based on the university's type or size. It also highlights the differences in the carbon calculation methodologies used by the institutions. Practical implications: Results build on the recent publications that document the Latin American context. The article contributes to knowledge about Andean university commitments and actions relating to climate change and carbon neutrality. This knowledge can contribute to how universities in the region seek to apply different methodologies, set targets and the timing of actions and consider their contextual opportunities and obstacles. Originality/value: Comparing university carbon footprints and carbon neutrality plans is an emerging topic, presenting methodological and institutional difficulties. This paper reveals some of these difficulties by comparing parameters, actions and implementation processes against contextual factors. While there is a drive for international and national comparisons and systematization of data on university carbon performance, significant methodological gaps still need to be resolved to account for these contextual factors.

3. Geometry Learning with Dynamic Software in Pre-Service Mathematics Teacher Education: A Systematic Review

Abstract

Providing an overview of the accumulated scientific knowledge regarding the learning of geometry with dynamic software by pre-service mathematics teachers is currently a pertinent issue in Mathematics Education. The interest in this topic within the field is reflected in the significance attributed to the role of the teacher as a pivotal actor in their students learning. Considering this, we present a systematic review that seeks to understand how the learning of school geometry content with dynamic software has been promoted and studied during pre-service mathematics teacher education. To do so, we have reviewed a group of journal articles, published between 2017 and 2023, following the principles of PRISMA declaration. The results reveal how researchers understand such learning, the pre-service teachers, the teacher educator, the tasks that promote it, and the production and analysis of data. Given these findings, we identify gaps in the research on this topic, among which stand out the view of pre-service teachers as autonomous subjects, the instrumentalist conception of dynamic software, and methodological approaches to data analysis that do not fully consider the role of the body in the act of knowing. These gaps reveal that the promotion of and study of learning of school geometry content with dynamic software have been explored little from sociocultural perspectives. Because of this, we believe it necessary to develop studies regarding learning from theoretical and methodological perspectives that demonstrate pathways for future explorations on the addressed topic and thus allow for the reduction of these gaps.

4. A Learning Analytics-Based Collaborative Conversational Agent to Foster Productive Dialogue in Inquiry Learning

Abstract

Background: Sustaining productive student-student dialogue in online collaborative inquiry learning is challenging, and teacher support is limited when needed in multiple groups simultaneously. Collaborative conversational agents (CCAs) have been used in the past to support student dialogue. Yet, research is needed to reveal the characteristics and effectiveness of such agents. Objectives: To investigate the extent to which our analytics-based Collaborative Learning Agent for Interactive Reasoning (Clair) can improve the productivity of student dialogue, we assessed both the levels at which students shared thoughts, listened to each other, deepened reasoning, and engaged with peer's reasoning, as well as their perceived productivity in terms of their learning community, accurate knowledge, and rigorous thinking. Method: In two separate studies, 19 and 27 dyads of secondary school students from Brazil and the Netherlands, respectively, participated in digital inquiry-based science lessons. The dyads were assigned to two conditions: with Clair present (treatment) or absent (control) in the chat. Sequential pattern mining of chat logs and the student's responses to a questionnaire were used to evaluate Clair's impact. Results: Analysis revealed that in both studies, Clair's presence resulted in dyads sharing their thoughts at a higher frequency compared to dyads that did not have Clair. Additionally, in the Netherlands' study, Clair's presence led to a higher frequency of students engaging with each other's reasoning. No differences were observed in students' perceived productivity. Conclusion: This work deepens our understanding of how CCAs impact student dialogue and illustrates the importance of a multidimensional perspective in analysing the role of CCAs in guiding student dialogue.

Abstract

Microquasars are laboratories for the study of jets of relativistic particles produced by accretion onto a spinning black hole. Microquasars are near enough to allow detailed imaging of spatial features across the multiwavelength spectrum. The recent extension of the spatial morphology of a microquasar, SS 433, to TeV gamma rays \cite{abeysekara2018very} localizes the acceleration of electrons at shocks in the jet far from the black hole \cite{hess2024ss433}. Here we report TeV gamma-ray emission from another microquasar, V4641~Sgr, which reveals particle acceleration at similar distances from the black hole as SS~433. Additionally, the gamma-ray spectrum of V4641 is among the hardest TeV spectra observed from any known gamma-ray source and is detected up to 200 TeV. Gamma rays are produced by particles, either electrons or hadrons, of higher energies. Because electrons lose energy more quickly the higher their energy, such a spectrum either very strongly constrains the electron production mechanism or points to the acceleration of high-energy hadrons. This observation suggests that large-scale jets from microquasars could be more common than previously expected and that microquasars could be a significant source of Galactic cosmic rays. high energy gamma-rays also provide unique constraints on the acceleration mechanisms of extra-Galactic cosmic rays postulated to be produced by the supermassive black holes and relativistic jets of quasars. The distance to quasars limits imaging studies due to insufficient angular resolution of gamma-rays and due to attenuation of the highest energy gamma-rays by the extragalactic background light.

6. Differences That Make a Difference: Adapting a Professional Development Program for the Post-COVID-New-Normal

Abstract

The unpredictable nature of the COVID-19 pandemic created unprecedented challenges including a need for new curricula, pedagogy, and more accessible forms of professional development (PD). A gap in research exists regarding professional development of educators. This qualitative study used data collected from two surveys, a focus group, and a geographical distribution map. The analysis focuses on identifying factors that influence in-service educators when choosing and participating in an extended, elective PD that focuses on writing and its instruction over two years. Analysis of two online summer National Writing Project institutes revealed several motivators for participation including desires to improve pedagogical skills, online accessibility, and desire to participate in personal writing. Participants indicated a strong desire for the trainings be moved to a later date in the summer and to be offered online. These actionable requests were implemented in the second summer PD offering. Findings will be used to reframe professional development formats.

7. Service-Learning Methodology to Develop Bachelor's Thesis in Information and Computer Science Degrees

Abstract

Service-Learning (SL) is a powerful methodology to acquire competences and values in Higher Education. However, there is still no widespread use in Information and Computer Science (ICS) degrees where most of the subjects are focused on the development of theoretical and practical contents purely related to technical competences. In this paper, we show the structure of a SL methodology to develop Bachelor's Thesis: 1) definition of proposals considering all the competencies of the Bachelor's Thesis subject and the needs of entities; 2) development of applications using agile methodologies, and 3) assessment of the SL experience from students, entities and professors. We present an experience developed in the 2019/2020 academic year with two entities devoted to disfavoured people. The results show both the high technical and professional quality of the projects and the high satisfaction of entities and students. We hope that the development of applications with the collaboration of non-profit entities allows the acquisition of both specific and transversal competencies on ICS degrees at the same time enhancing the development of useful professional ones.

Abstract

Computer Graphics (CG) advancements have allowed the creation of more realistic Virtual Humans (VH) through modern techniques for animating the VH body and face, thereby affecting perception. From traditional methods, including blend shapes, to driven animations using facial and body tracking, these advancements can potentially enhance the perception of comfort and realism in relation to VHs. Previously, Psychology studied facial movements in humans, with some works separating expressions into macro and micro expressions. Also, some previous CG studies have analyzed how macro and micro expressions are perceived, replicating psychology studies in VHs, encompassing studies with realistic and cartoon VHs, and exploring different VH technologies. However, instead of using facial tracking animation methods, these previous studies animated the VHs using blendshapes interpolation. To understand how the facial tracking technique alters the perception of VHs, this paper extends the study to macro and micro expressions, employing two datasets to transfer real facial expressions to VHs and analyze how their expressions are perceived. Our findings suggest that transferring facial expressions from real actors to VHs significantly diminishes the accuracy of emotion perception compared to VH facial animations created by artists.

Abstract

Supernova remnants (SNRs) are believed to be capable of accelerating cosmic rays (CRs) to PeV energies. SNR G106.3+2.7 is a prime PeVatron candidate. It is formed by a head region, where the pulsar J2229+6114 and its boomerang-shaped pulsar wind nebula are located, and a tail region containing SN ejecta. The lack of observed gamma ray emission from the two regions of this SNR has made it difficult to assess which region would be responsible for the PeV CRs. We aim to characterize the very-high-energy (VHE, 0.1-100 TeV) gamma ray emission from SNR G106.3+2.7 by determining the morphology and spectral energy distribution of the region. This is accomplished using 2565 days of data and improved reconstruction algorithms from the HAWC Observatory. We also explore possible gamma ray production mechanisms for different energy ranges. Using a multi-source fitting procedure based on a maximum-likelihood estimation method, we evaluate the complex nature of this region. We determine the morphology, spectrum, and energy range for the source found in the region. Molecular cloud information is also used to create a template and evaluate the HAWC gamma ray spectral properties at ultra-high-energies (UHE, >56 TeV). This will help probe the hadronic nature of the highest-energy emission from the region. We resolve one extended source coincident with all other gamma ray observations of the region. The emission reaches above 100~TeV and its preferred log-parabola shape in the spectrum shows a flux peak in the TeV range. The molecular cloud template fit on the higher energy data reveals that the SNR's energy budget is fully capable of producing a purely hadronic source for UHE gamma rays.

Abstract

In this study, we investigate the signatures of a non-commutative black hole solution. Initially, we calculate the thermodynamic properties of the system, including entropy, heat capacity, and Hawking radiation. For the latter quantity, we employ two distinct methods: surface gravity and the topological approach. Additionally, we examine the emission rate and remnant mass within this context. Remarkably, the lifetime of the black hole, after reaching its final state due to the evaporation process, is expressed analytically up to a grey-body factor. We estimate the lifetime for specific initial and final mass configurations. Also, we analyze the tensorial quasinormal modes using the 6th-order WKB method. Finally, we study the deflection angle, i.e., gravitational lensing, in both the weak and strong deflection limits., Comment: 27 pages, 13 figures and 4 tables

Abstract

Weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) may interact with a virtual pion that is exchanged between nucleons. This interaction channel is important to consider in models where the spin-independent isoscalar channel is suppressed. Using data from the first science run of the LUX-ZEPLIN dark matter experiment, containing 60 live days of data in a 5.5~tonne fiducial mass of liquid xenon, we report the results on a search for WIMP-pion interactions. We observe no significant excess and set an upper limit of $1.5\times10^{-46}$~cm$^2$ at a 90\% confidence level for a WIMP mass of 33~GeV/c$^2$ for this interaction.
