Abstract

Background: Despite a wide range of proposed risk factors and theoretical models, prediction of eating disorder (ED) onset remains poor. This study undertook the first comparison of two machine learning (ML) approaches [penalised logistic regression (LASSO), and prediction rule ensembles (PREs)] to conventional logistic regression (LR) models to enhance prediction of ED onset and differential ED diagnoses from a range of putative risk factors. Method: Data were part of a European Project and comprised 1402 participants, 642 ED patients [52% with anorexia nervosa (AN) and 40% with bulimia nervosa (BN)] and 760 controls. The Cross-Cultural Risk Factor Questionnaire, which assesses retrospectively a range of sociocultural and psychological ED risk factors occurring before the age of 12 years (46 predictors in total), was used. Results: All three statistical approaches had satisfactory model accuracy, with an average area under the curve (AUC) of 86% for predicting ED onset and 70% for predicting AN v. BN. Predictive performance was greatest for the two regression methods (LR and LASSO), although the PRE technique relied on fewer predictors with comparable accuracy. The individual risk factors differed depending on the outcome classification (EDs v. non-EDs and AN v. BN). Conclusions: Even though the conventional LR performed comparably to the ML approaches in terms of predictive accuracy, the ML methods produced more parsimonious predictive models. Menchon (a)(e) Abstract: Subtyping individuals who binge eat by 'diet-DT' and 'depression' has yielded two valid and clinically useful subtypes that predict eating severity, comorbid psychopathology and outcome. The present study aimed to find four subtypes based on these dimensions and test their validity. Besides, it explored the distribution of eating disorder (ED) diagnoses across subtypes given their known heterogeneity, crossover and binge-eating fluctuation. Cluster analysis grouped 1005 consecutively admitted ED adult women into four subtypes, those previously described 'DT' (22%), 'DT-depressive' (29%), and 'mild DT' (25%) and 'depressive-moderate DT' (24%). Overall 'mild DT' presented lower and 'DT-depressive' greater eating and comorbid psychopathology than the rest, whereas 'pure DT' and 'depressive-moderate DT' presented no differences on bulimic symptoms but in psychopathology (p < .01). Finally, while BN-P patients were mostly and similarly distributed in the 'DT' and 'DT-depressive' subtypes than in the other, AN were in the new 'mild DT' and 'depressive-moderate DT' (p < .01). However, BN-NP, BED and EDNOS were similarly represented across subtypes. Results are discussed with regard to 1) the newly emerged subtypes that may explain cases in which DT prevents or does not predict binge eating; 2) the confluence of DT-depression that signaled greater eating and comorbid pathology, particularly self-control problems; 3) ED-DSM-diagnostic criteria. Abstract

Patterned arrays of nickel microstructures were fabricated by electron beam lithography and DC sputtering on the surface of Si (001) substrates. Influence of the micro-arrays on the Si substrate surface was evaluated using polarized micro-Raman spectroscopy. Raman spectra maps were taken in two configurations ...(xx)z and ...(yy)z for arrays of 18.5 µm × 15.5 µm. The Si longitudinal optical (LO) phonon shifted to lower vibrational frequencies by 5 cm-1 in regions near to the vicinities of the Ni micro structures. From the deformation elastic theory, it is found that this frequency shift is explained by an in-plane tensile stress induced by the Ni micro arrays producing a strain of 1.4%. Abstract

Substance use disorder (SUD) is a significant public health concern. Unfortunately, there are few safe and effective medications to treat SUD and efficacy is suboptimal. There are important financial and scientific obstacles to develop new compounds, but recent advances in the discovery of new brain receptors and neurocircuits are offering opportunities to develop new pharmacotherapies. A systematic scientific approach to develop medications is required to demonstrate their safety and efficacy, bring it to market, and prescribe it to patients. The purpose of this manuscript is to provide a general overview of the challenges and opportunities in medications development for SUD, describe the phased approach of this development, the medications approved, and those that appear most promising.
