Background: As BMP15, GDF9, and kisspeptin all play critical roles in folliculogenesis and fertilization, investigating the possible relationship between obesity and these three factors could prove crucial in relation to understanding the role of obesity in infertility. Thus, the present study sought to determine the effects of obesity on the serum BMP15, GDF9, and kisspeptin concentrations in women of reproductive age. Methods: Ninety female participants were equally divided into three groups: class-1 obese (n=30), class-2 obese (n=30), and normal weight (control; n=30). The participants' serum BMP15, GDF9, and AMH concentrations were measured. Moreover, the serum kisspeptin concentrations were evaluated in the class-1 obese and control groups by means of the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method while the participants were in their menstrual period. Results: The serum BMP15 and kisspeptin concentrations were found to be much higher in the control group than in both obese groups (p=0.001 and p=0.01, respectively). While the GDF9 concentration exhibited a statistically significant positive correlation with age, the BMP15 concentration exhibited a positive correlation with the kisspeptin and LH concentrations in the control group. In addition, a positive correlation was identified between the BMP15 concentration and both age and the glucose level and a negative correlation with the insulin level in both the obese groups. Conclusions: Obesity appears to reduce the serum BMP15 and kisspeptin concentrations in obese women of reproductive age. This reduction may represent a milestone in reproductive dysfunction and may be used to predict the success of infertility treatment in obese women.

The recent decrease in the age interval of children who commit suicide is thought to be related to the violent images seen on television (TV). Cases of two young children influenced by the films they watched on TV who attempted suicide are reported here. First case was a four year old girl brought to our emergency clinic by her family for taking pills of diclophenac sodium SR 30 minute prior to their arrival. Interview with the patient and her family revealed that, the four year old girl asked for a toy microphone from her father and when the father rejected, she recalled a girl taking pills on a TV film and since she saw that nothing happened to her, she took the pills herself. The patient's physical examination showed that her general condition was well; however, she was evaluated to have hyperactivity. Second case was a seven year old unconscious and intubated girl brought to our emergency clinic. Interview with her family revealed that, after reprehended by her mother, the girl locked herself in her room and after 15 minutes, when her family members broke the door open and entered her room, she was found hanging on a bunk bed with a play rope. The patient was monitored on a ventilator for two days and after she recovered, she explained that she saw the act of hanging self on TV. Both patients were cared by psychologists. We think that it is very worrying to see some kids attempting suicide without knowing the consequences. We believe that in order to prevent violent behavior, more care should be taken in family-environment, media and TV programs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: Voiding dysfunction may result in lower urinary tract symptoms in children and is associated with urinary tract infection, renal damage and vesicoureteral reflux (VUR). The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between detrusor pressure, VUR and abnormal renal scintigraphy findings in children with dysfunctional voiding. Patients and Methods: Between 2004 and 2007, 30 children with VUR and voiding dysfunction, 22 girls and 8 boys, median age 8.2 years, were evaluated. Urodynamic study, renal scan and voiding cystourethrography were performed in all patients. Results: The degree of the renal scarring was found to be associated with the detrusor pressures (p = 0.018). The highest detrusor pressure was shown in the group of urge syndrome. The degree of the VUR was found to be correlated with the detrusor pressures (p = 0.038). In our study group, VUR had resolved in 11 (37%) patients, had improved in grade in 10 (33%) patients and remained unchanged in 9 (30%) patients after anticholinergic therapy. No significant relationship was found between the duration of therapy and the voiding patterns (p = 0.389). Conclusion: Every child with VUR should undergo a careful evaluation of its bladder function. Aim To describe the replantation of a vertically fractured root-filled maxillary central incisor after repair with adhesive resin. Root-filled teeth with vertical root fractures are usually extracted as they generally have a poor prognosis. In this case, an 18-month follow-up of a replanted incisor with vertical root fracture is presented with clinical and radiographic documentation. Key learning points •Replantation of root-filled incisors with complete vertical root fracture after resin bonding might be a realistic alternative to extraction. •Practitioners should be aware of the possible disadvantages as well as advantages associated with failure of a replanted incisor with complete vertical root fracture.
