Abstract

Continued decreasing of the world’s average copper ore grades, coupled with a meteoric rise in the generation of consumer waste streams, has led to the processing of electronic scrap (e-scrap) and other secondaries assuming increasing importance within the global copper industry. Treatment of these secondary feeds has traditionally been carried out in the Blast furnace, Peirce-Smith converter and/or anode furnace. More recently however, bath smelting processes such as the Ausmelt TSL and Outotec Kaldo technologies have emerged as the preferred option for processing these materials due to their superior environmental performance and flexibility to operate under a wide range of conditions. Furthermore, the ability of these processes to handle a wide range of feed inputs make them ideally placed for the processing of not only e-scrap but also other waste streams from the clean energy transition such as end of life e-mobility batteries and photovoltaic systems. This paper focuses on the processing of electronic scrap and other copper secondaries with Ausmelt TSL technology and discusses specific issues facing secondary copper smelters in relation to impurity management and process offgas handling/cleaning.

Abstract

Abstract Background Syndrome of the trephined is a well-recognised phenomenon that occurs in patients following a craniectomy. It is associated with several symptoms, including headaches, motor impairments, cognitive disorders and reduced consciousness. Treatment for the syndrome usually involves replacing the skull defect. Case Study A 71-year-old male underwent a left-sided craniectomy after being diagnosed with biopsy-confirmed invasive squamous cell carcinoma with associated skull erosion. Subsequently, he developed a severe case of syndrome of the trephined (SoT,) resulting in having to lie flat to prevent the motor component of the Glasgow Coma Score (GCS) falling from M5/6 (E3/4 Vt M5/6) to M1 (E3/4 Vt M1) on sitting to 30 degrees. Unfortunately, due to ongoing chest sepsis and physical frailty, he was unable to undergo a cranioplasty. Therefore, to aid in clinical stabilisation, the treating physicians and clinical engineering teams designed and manufactured a prosthesis on-site, allowing rapid patient treatment. The prosthesis led to the patient being able to sit up to 30 degrees without the motor component of the GCS falling from M6 to M1 (E4 VT M6). Conclusion Clinical improvements were demonstrated with definitive neurological improvement after applying the external cranial plate in clinical outcome measures and radiographically. Furthermore, we have shown that rapid prototyping technology provides a flexible solution to synthesise bespoke medical prostheses with the correct expertise and regulatory framework.

Abstract

Actualmente el embarazo en adolescentes es considerado un problema de salud pública que puede estar relacionado con características sociodemográficas y tipos de estructura familiar. En este artículo se presentan los resultados de una investigación que tuvo por objetivo evaluar la asociación entre características sociodemográficas, tipos de estructura familiar y embarazo en adolescentes, con el fin de proponer estrategias de intervención temprana; en esta se utilizó un estudio descriptivo retrospectivo, utilizando datos administrativos e información de registros médicos sobre adolescentes embarazadas, atendidas en una clínica de III nivel durante el periodo enero/diciembre-2014, y se analizó la frecuencia de características sociodemográficas y de tipos de estructura familiar para identificar relaciones entre estos dos aspectos. También se expone la necesidad de implementar planes multipropósito al momento de diseñar estrategias de prevención para este evento, con base en la interpretación de los resultados y las conclusiones de la investigación.
