Despite the great diversity of Brazilian anuran species, there are still many knowledge gaps about the acoustic communication of these animals. Among the species, those classified as 'Data Deficient' have the greatest gaps in knowledge on their behavior. This is the case of Boana ericae, a species belonging to the Boana pulchella group, endemic to the Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park region, in the northeast of the state of Goiás, Central Brazil. Three distinct call types (A, B, and C) are currently known for B. ericae, with the type A call associated with attracting reproductive partners and the type C call presenting a territorial function. We recorded the vocalizations of 10 individuals of this species and found the presence of vocalizations composing three new note types (D, E, and F). Our results indicate that air temperature and body condition influenced the acoustic parameters of the advertisement and aggressive calls of this species. We also observed that some acoustic parameters of the advertisement calls can be used for individual recognition for showing greater variation among individuals than intra-individually. Our results add new information regarding the vocal repertoire in this species, expanding their known intra-individual classification of the acoustic parameters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The White-lipped Peccary (WLP) is a large-sized mammal that lives in groups and needs large, preserved areas to survive. Over the last decades, the distribution area of the WLP has been reduced, being absent from areas where its occurrence is expected, such as the central region of southwestern Goiás, Brazilian Midwest. Therefore, here we presented eight new records of WLP in southwestern of Goiás state, with information on group size and landscape context. WLPs were recorded by camera trap, and we extracted the percentage of native cover (NC%), mean of Euclidean nearest-neighbor distance (MENND), and largest native patch area (LP (hectares)) in the landscape occupied by them. The WLP group size ranged from 1 to 52 individuals in anthropized landscapes (4.6 to 30.7 of NC%), with a MENND range of 89.4 to 165 m and LP ranged from 48.8 to 297.9. These findings could be an indication that the species is returning to use the region. However, we stress that this area may not support viable WLP populations in the long-term due to the level of anthropization of the studied landscape. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Changes in the natural landscape and the indiscriminate use of pesticides can have a major impact on aquatic environments and have contributed to the worldwide decline of amphibian populations. In the present study, we sampled tadpoles of three anuran amphibians (Boana albopunctata, Physalaemus cuvieri, and Dendropsophus minutus) from ponds in six different agricultural landscapes of the Brazilian Cerrado savanna and evaluated whether and to what extent genotoxic and mutagenic damage was related to land use (the amount of forest and agricultural remnants, and related physicochemical factors) and the presence of pesticides in the water of the study ponds. We also evaluated the hepatotoxicity in P. cuvieri, which was the most abundant species at five of the six sampling points. Clomazone and atrazine were the most common pesticides found in the ponds. The B. albopunctata and P. cuvieri tadpoles presented similar patterns of DNA damage among the sampling points. The least DNA damage was found in the D. minutus tadpoles, although this species was present in only one of the study ponds. More binucleated and anucleated cells were observed in B. albopunctata, but there was no significant variation among species in terms of the number of micronuclei or other erythrocytic nuclear abnormalities. Land use and physicochemical factors did not explain the variation in the DNA damage observed in the three anurans. The hepatotoxicity analyses of P. cuvieri revealed the presence of a series of alterations, including the enlargement of the sinusoids, vacuolization of the hepatocytes, the infiltration of inflammatory cells, hepatic steatosis, and dilation of the blood vessels. The interaction between physicochemical factors and the biomarkers analyzed in the present study is complex. In particular, it will be important to better elucidate which factors are contributing, either directly or indirectly, to the decline of anuran amphibian populations, especially in threatened biomes, such as the Brazilian Cerrado. In this case, we would encourage further in situ studies that assess the ecotoxicology of the landscape, together with the systematic monitoring of aquatic environments, to guarantee the long‐term integrity of amphibian populations, and those of other organisms that play an essential functional role in the ecosystem. During the breeding season, hundreds of anurans agglomerate at spawning sites, where a diversity of social contexts arise. In this scenario, anurans may alter their vocal repertoire according to the immediate social context, to overcome intraspecific competition. To evaluate the acoustic response of Boana goiana to successive interactions with a conspecific competitor, the present study was based on comparing the repetition rates of advertisement and aggressive calls of B. goiana focal males exposure to repeated artificial advertisement calls in 10 playback sessions. We observed that B. goiana males altered their acoustic behaviour in response to the simulated arrival of a new competitor. Males emitted less advertisement calls and more aggressive calls with the arrival of the competitors. Temperature and body condition were not important predictors of continuity of males in the experiment or the call repetition rates in the pre-playback session. However, the body condition influenced the total delta advertisement calls (differences in the call rate emission between end and the beginning of the experiment), indicating that higher values of body conditions allow males to show smaller reductions in the emission of advertisement calls over time in the presence of a competitor.
