Background: Mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) of various origins are the most widely investigated type of stem cells in clinical trials. We report a treatment comparison of two adult sources of autologous MSCs regarding safety and efficacy in established spinal cord injury (SCI). Materials and Methods: In this Phase I/II open-label two-arm study, patients were divided into two groups. The first group was treated with autologous bone marrow-derived MSCs (BM-MSC), while the second was treated with autologous adipose tissue-derived MSCs (AT-MSC). Safety and outcomes were assessed in both groups for 24 months post-treatment initiation using the American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA) Impairment Scale (AIS). Results: Both groups showed no serious treatment-emergent adverse events (TEAEs). AIS-assessed outcomes pointed to sensory and motor improvements in patients of both groups. Patients who received AT-MSCs showed better sensory and motor function improvement than those who received BM-MSCs. One patient in the AT-MSCs group regained the ability to walk after years of disability. Conclusions: Intrathecal injection of autologous AT-MSCs and autologous BM-MSC appears to be safe, with a possible advantage in the AT-MSCs treatment option regarding efficacy over BM-MSCs. Future clinical trials investigating larger sample sizes are warranted for wider use of this treatment modality in clinical practice. Furthermore, earlier use of cellular therapy intervention for SCI patients is predicted to improve the benefits. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

News accuracy has been a significant issue for media organizations. However, Arabic errata texts have been neglected in academic research. The purpose of the present study is to identify the generic structural components of errata published in three different types of Arabic texts. We attempt to analyse the generic structure of these texts and determine the linguistic signals used to indicate these components. The paper also sheds light on the different kinds of errors found in Arabic texts and the functions they communicate to readers. For this, we collected and analysed 120 errata from Arabic daily newspapers, academic journals, and popular magazines. For our data analysis, we drew on the genre analysis framework pioneered by Swales (1990) and further adapted by other researchers such as Al-Ali (2005). We additionally referred to Bugeja and Peterson (2007) for classifying the types of errors. The study results show that the analysed Arabic errata texts followed a generic structure comprising eight component moves. Further, objective errors were found to be more frequent than subjective errors in Arabic newspapers and academic journals. Nonetheless, in most cases, the resulting disability permanently affects the individual's quality of life due to the limited outcome of available treatment options. The neurological deficit associated with SCI results from primary injury induced by the physical trauma and secondary injury involving inflammation, spinal tissue degeneration, and scar formation. Stem cells of different origins and using different treatment protocols have been tried to minimize aspects of secondary injury in the spinal cord. Case Report: In this case report, we evaluated the safety and efficacy of intrathecal injections of Wharton's Jelly-derived mesenchymal stem cells (WJ-MSCs) in a patient with chronic traumatic complete SCI. The findings indicated that the treatment was safe with no serious adverse events related to the procedure or administration of stem cells. The long-term follow-up period showed sustained sensory and motor function improvements with enhanced quality of life scores. Conclusions: The results imply a potential role of WJ-MSC in the treatment of chronic and severe SCI. As indicated by previous studies, the mechanism of action points mainly to the ability of MSCs to protect the neural elements that survived the initial mechanical insult by modulating the immune response and promoting neuronal regeneration.
